Global Covid cases surpass 281 million
The overall number of global coronavirus cases has now surged past 281 million, with the new Covid strain Omicron showing a spike in hospitalisation.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 281,355,162 while the death toll from the virus reached 5,406,194 Tuesday morning.
The US has recorded 52,776,066 cases so far and more than 818,367 people have died from the virus in the country, the university data shows.
Brazil, which has been experiencing a new wave of cases since January, registered 22,249,466 cases as of Friday, while its Covid death toll rose to 618,815.

India's Covid-19 tally rose to 34,799,241 on Monday, as 6,531 new cases were registered in 24 hours across the country, as per the health ministry data.
Besides, as many as 315 deaths due to the pandemic were reported since Saturday morning, taking the total toll to 480,018.
The number of Omicron cases has risen to 578 in the country and at least 151 have recovered, the health ministry said.
Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh logged another Covid-linked death and 373 fresh infections in 24 hours till Monday morning.
With the detection of the fresh cases after testing 17, 271 samples, the daily case positivity rate rose to 2.16% from Sunday’s 1.57% during the period, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.
The latest deceased was a woman aged between 51 and 60 years from the Dhaka division.
The fresh number reported on Monday took the country’s total fatalities to 28,061 while the caseload mounted to 15,83,626.

Of the 12 deaths recorded from December 20 to December 26, some 8.3% received Covid jabs while 92.7% did not, according to the directorate.
Meanwhile, the mortality rate remained static at 1.77% during the period. Besides, the recovery rate declined a bit to 97.73% with the recovery of 323 more patients during the 24-hour period.
On Sunday, Bangladesh logged four Covid-linked deaths with 268 fresh infections in 24 hours.
Though the deaths remained below five since December 13, the daily cases remained mostly over 250, according to data provided by the directorate.
On December 9, Bangladesh again logged zero Covid-related death after nearly three weeks as the pandemic was apparently showing signs of easing.
The country reported this year's first zero Covid-related death in a single day on November 20 along with 178 infections since the pandemic broke out in Bangladesh in March 2020.
Bangladesh reported the highest number of daily fatalities of 264 on August 5 this year, while the highest daily caseload was 16,230 on July 28 this year.
Global Covid cases top 255 million
The overall number of Covid cases now crossed 255 million amid the global race to vaccinate masses against the infectious disease.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 254,998,932 while the death toll from the virus reached 5,131,160 on Friday morning.
The US has recorded 47,530,897 cases to date and more than 768,684 people have died so far from the virus in the country, as per the university data.

Brazil, which has been experiencing a new wave of cases since January, has registered 21,989,962 cases so far, while its Covid death toll rose to 612,177.
India's Covid-19 tally rose to 34,485,517 on Thursday, as 7,000 new cases were registered in 24 hours across the country, as per the federal health ministry data.
Besides, as many as 92 deaths were recorded since Wednesday morning, taking the death toll to 464,715.
Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh logged five more Covid-linked deaths and 244 fresh infections in 24 hours till Thursday morning.
The daily case positivity rate slightly declined to 1.25 percent from Wednesday’s 1.35 percent.

The fresh numbers took the total fatalities to 27,939 while the country’s caseload mounted to 15,73,458, said the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
All the five deceased were men.
Dhaka division logged three Covid-related deaths while Chattogram and Rangpur divisions logged one death each during the period, said the directorate.
However, the mortality rate remained static at 1.78 percent.
The fresh cases were detected after testing 19,570 samples, the DGHS added.
Besides, the recovery rate increased to 97.72 percent, with the recovery of 294 more patients during the 24-hour period.
So far, 3,39,95,948 people have fully been vaccinated in the country, while 5,29,83,555 received the first dose as of Wednesday, according to the directorate.
Covid-19 in Bangladesh: Both fatalities and cases increase in 24 hours
Bangladesh logged six more Covid-linked deaths and reported 215 fresh infections in 24 hours till Monday morning.
The new casualties marked a slight increase from Sunday’s four deaths and 178 cases.
Meanwhile, the daily-case positivity rate also rose to 1.28 per cent from Sunday’s 1.17 per cent, said the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The fresh numbers took the total fatalities to 27,901 while the country’s caseload mounted to 1,571,228.

On the 44th epidemiological week of pandemic from November 1 to 7, Bangladesh saw 74.1 per cent comorbidity in the 27 Covid-linked deaths.
The comorbidity rate has increased 23 per cent from the previous week, said the DGHS
Comorbidity means the simultaneous presence of two or more diseases or medical conditions in a patient.
Of the 27 deceased, 23 didn’t receive any vaccine against Covid-19 while three were fully vaccinated and another received the first dose.

However, on Monday the mortality rate remained static at 1.78 per cent.
The fresh cases were detected after testing 16,812 samples, said the DGHS.
Also, the recovery rate remained unchanged at 97.70 per cent with the recovery of 209 more patients during the period.
Global Covid cases top 245 million
The overall number of Covid cases has now crossed 245 million amid the global race to vaccinate masses against the infectious disease.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 245,493,444 while the death tally from the virus reached 4,979,940 Friday morning.
The US has recorded 45,825,983 cases to date and more than 743,358 people have died so far from the virus in the country, as per the university data.

The United States tallied the largest number of new cases over the last seven days -- nearly 513,000 new cases, though that was a 12% drop from the previous week -- and over 11,600 deaths, which was about the same number as the previous week, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.
Brazil, which has been experiencing a new wave of cases since January, registered 21,781,436 cases so far, while its Covid death toll rose to 607,125.
India's Covid-19 tally rose to 34,245,530 on Thursday, as 14,323 new cases were registered in 24 hours across the country, according to the federal health ministry.
Besides, 803 deaths due to the pandemic since Wednesday morning took the total death toll to 457,221.
However, Europe stood out as the only major region worldwide to report an increase in both coronavirus cases and deaths over the past week, the UN health agency said.
The World Health Organization said new Covid-19 cases in its 53-country European region, which stretches as far east as the former Soviet republics in Central Asia, recorded an 18% increase in corona cases over the last week -- a fourth straight weekly increase for the area, reports AP.
In WHO’s weekly epidemiological report on Covid-19, Europe also saw a 14% increase in virus-related deaths. That amounted to more than 1.6 million new cases and over 21,000 new deaths.
Meanwhile, Russia is reporting an increasing number of coronavirus infections and Covid deaths as the country approaches a week of non-working days aimed at stemming the surge in cases.
Russia has reported 36,582 new Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 8,352,601, the official monitoring and response center said on Wednesday. The nationwide death toll grew by 1,123, the highest daily rise since the start of the pandemic, to 233,898.

The US has logged 45,298,376 cases and 733,160 deaths to date, according to the university data. The death toll in the United States is the highest in the world.

The new cases were detected after testing 16,088 samples during the 24-hour period.
