‘Drug-trader’ killed in Chuadanga ‘gunfight’ with BGB
A suspected drug trader was killed in an alleged gunfight with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Notunpara border in Jibannagar upazila early Monday.
The deceased was identified as Jasim Mandal, 35, son of Karim Mandal.
Lt Col Kamrul Hasan, commanding officer of BGB-58 battalion, said a team of BGB conducted a drive around 3am acting on a tip-off and arrested Jasim along with 23 bottles of phensedyl.
Following his information during primary interrogation, the team conducted another drive in the area to recover more phensedyl.
When the team approached the area, a gang of drug traders numbering 8-10 opened fire on them, triggering a skirmish.
Jasim was killed in the gunfight, said the BGB official adding that two BGB members were also injured.
The team also recovered 300 bottles of phensedyl and several sharp weapons.
Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Jibannagar Police Station, said Nayeb Subedar Hamidul Islam of Notunpara BoP filed a case in this connection.

Van driver suffering from fever, cold dies in Natore
A van driver suffering from fever and cold-related issues including breathing problem, died at Nowshara village in Bagatipara upazila on Sunday night.
According to family sources, the man had been suffering from the symptoms for the last three to four days.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Prianka Debi Paul said that the sample will be collected from the man and the village will be put under lockdown for the time being.
Sylhet reports another coronavirus case
A 26-year-old man was diagnosed with coronavirus in Sylhet sadar upazila, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the district to four.
The patient is a resident of Tikorpara area in Khadimnagar union of sadar upazila.
Doctor Anisur Rahman, assistant director of Sylhet divisional office of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), said that the man’s sample tested positive at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital and he is in isolation at his house.
Besides, three coronavirus patients, who are undergoing treatment at Sylhet Shaheed Shamsuddun Ahmed Hospital, are gradually improving, he added.
23 more diagnosed with coronavirus in Kishoreganj
Twenty-three new coronavirus cases were detected on Sunday in Kishoreganj, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the district to 99.
Among the new cases, there are six physicians, 10 staffs of health department and four policemen, Civil Surgeon Doctor Md Mujibur Rahman said around 10:30pm.
Among them, there were also three patients who tested positive for the second time.
The civil surgeon said that total 125 samples were sent to the Institute of Public Health (IPH) at Mohakhali on Saturday. They received positive reports of 23 samples.
Besides, 101 samples have been sent for test.
One more tests positive for coronavirus in Nawabganj
A man, who returned from Narayanganj, was diagnosed with coronavirus in the upazila, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the area to six.
Confirming the matter, Dr Horgobindo Sarker Anup, medical officer of Nawabganj Upazila Health Complex, said they received the test report on Sunday night from the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR).
Earlier, five coronavirus cases were detected in the upazila.
Meanwhile, seven more people died of coronavirus in Bangladesh in the last 24 hours till Sunday, taking the death toll in the country to 91.
Besides, 312 more people tested positive for coronavirus during the period, raising the number of such cases in the country to 2,456.
Air Quality Index: Dhaka ranks 6th worst
Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka ranked sixth worst in the Air Quality Index (AQI) on Monday morning.
It had an AQI score of 140 at 08:06am.
The air was classified as ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’.
When the AQI value is between 101 and 150, active children and adults, and people with respiratory diseases, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion.
India’s Delhi, Thailand’s Chiang Mai and Pakistan’s Lahore occupied the top three spots in the list of cities with the worst air quality with AQI scores of 175, 160 and 158 respectively.
The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is, and what associated health effects might be a concern for them.
In Bangladesh, the AQI is based on five criteria pollutants – Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2, and Ozone (O3).
Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution. Its air quality usually improves during monsoon.
