Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayon Chandra Chanda moved the Bill and it was passed by voice vote.
The proposed law will replace the ‘Livestock Research Institute Ordinance, 1984’ which was scrapped by the High Court as this ordinance was promulgated during the military regime.
As per the Bill, there will be a 14-member board for the institute. This board will be comprised of the Fisheries and Livestock Minister as the Chairman, State Minister or Deputy Minister, two MPs nominated by the Speaker, Fisheries and Livestock Secretary, who shall also be the Vice-Chairman of the Board, ex-officio, a member from Planning Commission, Bangladesh Agriculture University Vice-Chancellor, Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council, an Additional Secretary from the Finance Ministry, Director General of the Livestock Directorate, government-nominated two persons involved in research in the Livestock Research Institute, government-nominated two persons who are experienced and interested in livestock affairs and Director General of the Livestock Research Institute.
The tenure of the board will be for three years. The board will sit for meeting at least once in every three months.
