"Though information technology simplifies everyday life, its negative use is misleading the younger generation. We have to take a role from the family to protect our children," she said while speaking at a programme marking the launching of a new school, River Woods School, held on its campus in the city’s Uttara area.
Rashida said although River Woods School will conduct their educational curricula in English, they must remember that the young people of this country have given away their lives in 1952 to earn the rights of their mother tongue.
They will also have to reflect the glorious history, tradition and culture along with the great Liberation War, she said.
There should also be reflection of the contributions of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with freedom fighters, the President’s spouse said.
She said emphasis should be given on drawing, storytelling and sports to reduce dependence on computer and mobile phone. "Then children's creativity will increase which will teach them to think and create."
The theme of school, 'Integrity, creativity, nobility and originality', will also help build a good behaviour and thought among children, Rashida hoped.
She also unveiled the inaugural stone at the programme and hoisted the school flag with school song.
A painting competition titled 'Building Friendship through Art' was held throughout the month of December.
The keynote speech was presented by Lynnet Rita Martin, principal of the institution, while Colonel (retd) Babar Selim delivered the welcome speech.
School’s Chief Advisor Brig Gen (retd) M Obaidul Haque, chairman of the Board of Directors Barrister Riad Ahmed Tushar and social worker Md Sarwar Murshed Akanda were also present at the programme.
The school will start its academic activities from January 2020.
