The village is in the centre of the union. The locality could be potentially transformed if a playground and amusement centre are set up there, said locals in reference to seven acres of government khas land which remains unused.
Senior people feel that such a development could divert their youths from turning to drugs and anti-social activities by involving them with games and sports.
Besides, they said, the establishment of an amusement centre in the area would also help flourish trade and commerce.
More than 100,000 people live at 20 villages of the union. However, there is no playground in the area, and no amusement centre in the entire Laksam upazila.
Gobindapur, Ajgora and Khila in Monohorganj under Laksam are nearby. An amusement park is expected to cater to the demands of people from across the upazila.
Upon demand of the local people, LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam, Upazila Chairman Advocate Yunus Bhuiyan and UNO AKM Saiful Alam recently visited the khas land at Monpal.
Latifur Rahman, president of the managing committee of Fulkoli Biddaneketon, and Md Masudul Haq, senior teacher of Uttarda High School of the village, said there is a communication network around the village.
A playground-plus amusement centre is the demand of the time. A proposal has been submitted to expand the northern road of the village to make the spot easier to visit for people from all across the upazila.
Md Billal Hossain, a resident of the village, said, “Local public representatives as well as the elite of the area have long demanding that a playground and amusement centre be set up there. Setting up an amusement centre here would attract many.”
UNO AKM Saiful Alam said he along with the minister visited the land.
A 4-acre swathe of land adjoins a 7-acre one. The amusement centre, if built, could include a boating facility in the lake with benches on shore.
Regarding this, a proposed design for the project has been asked to be submitted to the minister.
The UNO is said to be preparing to do that.
