The government is working to finalise an accurate and acceptable list of martyrs and genocide victims of the 1971 Liberation War, as the process remains incomplete even after more than five decades of independence, Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmad Azam Khan told Parliament on Wednesday.
The government has initiated a fresh move to compile a definitive list, he said responding to a tabled query from Pirojpur-3 lawmaker Ruhul Amin Dulal during the question-answer session.
“Through this initiative, an accurate and acceptable list of all martyrs and genocide victims will be formulated to ensure their sacrifices receive proper recognition.”
In the written response, Minister Ahmad Azam Khan provided a breakdown of the currently gazetted 6,480 martyred freedom fighters under the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.
The list includes 3,698 civilian martyrs, 1,541 from the armed forces, 817 from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), 423 from the police, and one from the Ansar force.
