A total of 57 stranded Bangladeshi nationals were repatriated from Lebanon on Thursday, with the full cost covered by the government. The Qatar Airways flight landed at 9:15 am at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), according to a foreign ministry press release. The repatriation was facilitated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, the Embassy of Bangladesh in Beirut, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). So far, a total of 1,199 Bangladeshi citizens have been repatriated from Lebanon via 18 flights. Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, and IOM welcomed the returnees at the airport. IOM provided each returnee with TK 5,000 as pocket money, along with food supplies and basic medical care. Ministry officials spoke with the returnees about the horrors of the ongoing conflict and inquired about their well-being. One Bangladeshi national has reportedly died in a bombing incident during the conflict. The government has assured that all Bangladeshi expatriates in Lebanon who wish to return home will be repatriated at government expense. The Bangladesh Embassy in Beirut continues to work to ensure the safe return of expatriates and the safety of those who wish to remain in Lebanon.

A 22-year-old man was killed and three others injured in a clash between two factions of Jubo Dal over dominance in the Shekherchar area of Narsingdi on Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Manjur Mia, son of Abdur Rashid from Poulanpur village of Madhobdi Thana, said Gobindo Sarker, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Madhobdi Police Station. The identities of the injured individuals are yet to be confirmed. Police said that the clash stemmed from a dispute between Akram Hossain, senior joint secretary of Meherpara Union Jubo Dal, and Jubo Dal leader Baokhtiar, from the same union, over control of Shekerchar (Baburhat) Bazar and the local cable business. Supporters of both groups clashed and opened fire around 8:30 pm, resulting in the death of Manjur and injuries to three others. Chhatra Dal activist shot dead in Narsingdi The body has been sent to the morgue for an autopsy, the OC said. Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to prevent any further incidents, he added. Narsingdi clash leaves 2 UP members killed   

Mohammad Hafizur Rahman, father-in-law of Daily Sun Editor Md Rezaul Karim Lotus, passed away on Thursday. He was 92. He breathed his last at 1:05 pm at his residence in Dhaka's Bashundhara Residential Area. Journalist Mahmodul Hoque no more Hafizur Rahman, a former senior official of the Bangladesh Bank, left behind two daughters, one son, five grandchildren, and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death. Hafizur Rahman hailed from Sohagdal village in Nesarabad upazila under Pirojpur district. ERF mourns death of journalist Moinuddin's mother The namaz-e-janaza for the deceased was held at the C Block Mosque in the capital’s Bashundhara Residential Area after Maghrib prayers. Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Thursday said the interim government is an outcome of unity and laid emphasis on maintaining the unity to take the nation towards its desired goals. “We (interim govt) were born amid unity and unity is our strength,” he said, recalling that the government was born and created through unity. All parties reach consensus on inclusive ‘July Declaration’: Asif Nazrul Speaking at the all-party conference over the proposed “July Proclamation” at the Foreign Service Academy, Dr Yunus said they feel a bit weak when they work alone and see no one is beside them. “And when you all sit together, we get courage in mind that we remain united," he said while delivering his opening speech at a meeting with political parties. Leaders of all political parties and forces involved in the July mass uprising, including BNP, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Hefajat-e-Islam, Ganatantra Mancha, the Anti-Discrimination Movement, and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, attended the meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Dr Yuns. Mentioning that the government gets rejuvenated through unity, Prof Yunus said one day, the students of the July revolution came to him and told him that they would make a declaration - the July Proclamation. July-August uprising: Govt publishes gazette of 834 martyrs "I tried to understand what proclamation they are going to make. I told them that it would not happen," he said, adding that he advised the students to make the proclamation involving all stakeholders of the July revolution.  The aim of the meeting was to finalise the ‘July Proclamation’ through a consensus. Dr Yunus said the nation remained united, he pledged that he would maintain the unity as long as his interim government would remain in power. "We must go on this path. Give us this courage. Today, I feel courage by sitting with you again." Dr Yunus said if the ‘July Proclamation’ could be declared through unity, it would be good for the country and become good internationally too, showing the country’s people and the world that the unity of the nation remains solid. Law Adviser Asif Nazrul said all political parties have reached a consensus about an inclusive “July Declaration” recognising the contributions of all parties and forces that participated in the recent mass uprising. Interim Govt to hold all-party conference over July Proclamation Thursday Briefing reporters after the meeting in front of the Foreign Service Academy on Thursday, he also said a work plan would be chalked out soon regarding the formation of the July Declaration based on consensus. “A consensus has been reached on the formulation of a declaration for the July mass uprising in the meeting. Everyone agreed that such a declaration is necessary, but many suggestions have been given in this regard,” the adviser said.

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed on Thursday urged the interim government to remain alert to ensure that no rift is created in the anti-fascist unity over the ‘July Declaration’. Talking to reporters after attending a meeting between the Chief Adviser and political parties and other forces at the Foreign Service Academy, the BNP leader said he raised the question at the meeting of whether a declaration for the July mass uprising was necessary after five and a half months had elapsed. Babar breaks down in tears at Ziaur Rahman’s grave “If any political document becomes a historical record, we will certainly respect it. But we have suggested including all concerned parties and taking their opinions into account when formulating such a document. We have requested the Chief Adviser and all relevant advisers to pay attention to this matter and take appropriate steps to ensure that no rift is created in national unity and no confusion arises among us,” the BNP leader said. He said it is now the biggest challenge for the nation to turn the national unity formed through the July-August mass uprising against fascism into a mass unity and nurture that unity within the country’s political culture and practice it. The BNP leader said the nation must maintain this unity and move forward by upholding it. “As part of our effort, we want to issue an inclusive political statement with all anti-fascist political parties. We must ensure that no fascist forces or their cohorts can sow the seeds of division within us." He said they provided their suggestions and thoughts on governance and various other matters they deemed necessary. US Science Envoy for Air Quality Dr Jamie Schauer on Thursday concluded a week-long visit to Dhaka, stressing the need for advanced monitoring systems and source apportionment studies to guide policy, address seasonal and localised pollution patterns, and encourage cross-sectoral collaboration. During his visit from January 12-16, Dr Schauer demonstrating the US government's strong commitment to supporting Bangladesh's efforts in tackling air pollution. He collaborated with local academics, government officials and NGOs, sharing expert insights and practical solutions to improve air quality. His visit emphasised the importance of air quality management, effective policies and academic collaboration to address the complex air pollution challenges facing Bangladesh, including the urgent need for advanced monitoring systems, cleaner technologies and multi-sectoral partnerships.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested in Mymensingh for selling fake medical college admission test questions. The arrestee is Nazmul Ehsan Nayeem, a first-year mathematics student at Ananda Mohan College. He is the son of Zahurul Islam from Bhurarbari village in Sarishabari, Jamalpur, said Additional Superintendent of Mymensingh Police Mohaimenul Islam at a press conference at the district police headquarters on Thursday. Youth arrested over raping street child in Dhaka Detective Branch (DB) of Mymensingh Police arrested Nazmul from a student dormitory on College Road Thursday afternoon. “We were closely monitoring social media platforms after reports emerged of leaked medical college entrance exam questions. A Facebook account under the name ‘Gazi Kamal Hossain’ posted a claim offering the 2024-2025 medical college entrance exam questions for Tk 12,000, with Tk 6,000 required as an advance payment. A fake question paper was also shared in the post. Suspecting this to be a scam, we initiated an investigation,” said the addl SP. Nayeem had reportedly bought an old mobile phone from Alka Nodi Bangla Saima Telecom, used it to create a WhatsApp account, and contacted prospective medical students, offering fake questions for a fee. Over the past two days, he is believed to have collected more than Tk 1 lakh from various individuals. 5 muggers arrested from Dhaka's Kadamtali: DMP During primary interrogation, Nayeem confessed to orchestrating the scam after failing his own medical entrance exam. He admitted to defrauding others by providing them with fake questions and receiving payments via WhatsApp and the mobile banking service, bKash. Legal proceedings are currently underway, and a case against Nayeem is expected to be filed soon, added the police official.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud on Thursday said the Election Commission would decide its next step once the reform proposals over the electoral system are finalised. "When everything comes into a shape or form, we will think about how to involve the EC in it. The sooner it comes, the better it will be for us to take preparation (for the next national election)," he said replying to a question from reporters at his office. The commissioner refused to say anything in advance about the reform proposal but remarked that the sooner the EC would receive the proposals, the more helpful it would be in the preparations.  Both US and India want democracy, elections in Bangladesh: Eric Garcetti "At this point, we cannot comment in advance. We can think about it when it comes. There is a proposal to create an upper house and a lower house of parliament, there is a matter of amending the constitution. When everything takes shape, we will think about how to involve the EC," he said. On Wednesday, the Electoral System Reform Commission along with three other reform commissions submitted their respective reports to Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus. The Election Commissioner said the EC is always ready for the national election. He said the Election Commission is committed to run fair, transparent and impartial elections. In reply to another question, he said, “It is a matter of trust. We cannot imagine ‘voting at night’. If we get the cooperation of all, we are confident that we will be able to give the nation a neutral and nice election," he said. The Electoral Reform Commission in its report has recommended re-election in a constituency if the voter turnout is less than 40 percent, introduction of “no vote” provision to stop unopposed election, and the elimination of electronic voting machines (EVMs). Main goal is to ensure free, fair election: EC Sanaullah It also recommended barring political parties from maintaining associate bodies among students, teachers, and workers, as well as their foreign chapters. Other recommendations include defense division in the definition of law enforcement agencies for election time, prioritizing the Election Commission’s own officials in appointment as returning officers and assistant returning officers, and changing a provision for an independent candidate to acquire support from 500 voters instead of submitting signatures of 1 percent of the voters. The reform commission suggested the Election Commission should be empowered to postpone or cancel elections and to conduct re-elections as well as entrusted with the sole responsibility of appointing the EC Secretary. The commission, headed by Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, placed some 150 reform recommendations in its report.

BNP leader Lutfozzaman Babar broke down in tears at the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar after his release from prison, following 17 years of incarceration.  Babar was freed from Dhaka’s central jail in Keraniganj around 1:45 pm, and made his way directly to Zia’s grave. Despite his frail health, he was accompanied by a convoy of several thousand BNP leaders and workers. The journey took approximately three hours.  Lutfozzaman Babar finally walks out of jail Upon arrival, Babar was visibly overwhelmed with emotion and broke down amidst his supporters. He was joined by BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan and senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. After regaining composure, Babar acknowledged the greetings of party leaders and workers. Babar first visited Zia’s grave, then went to the graves of his parents in Banani, before heading to his residence in Gulshan. Nazrul Islam Khan later spoke to the press, reflecting on Babar’s unjust imprisonment. “Our dear colleague, who endured over 17 years in prison and has now been proven innocent, is finally free,” he said. Babar among 6 acquitted in ten-truck arms haul case Khan added, “Babar, who was young and vigorous when imprisoned, was wrongfully incarcerated due to political vendetta and false charges. He spent nearly six years in a condemned cell. The toll on him has been immense, but we are grateful for the court’s decision to clear him of all charges.” Khan also praised Babar’s devotion to the BNP, noting that despite his ill health, he chose to visit Ziaur Rahman’s grave first, rather than go home to his family. A former Netrokona-4 MP, Babar served twice between 1991-1996 and 2001-2006. He was appointed the youngest state minister for home affairs in Khaleda Zia’s cabinet in 2001. High Court acquits Lutfozzaman Babar in corruption case Following his release, a large crowd gathered outside Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj to welcome him with flowers and congratulations. Babar’s legal battles began in 2007, resulting in multiple convictions, including two death sentences and one life sentence. However, after the fall of the Awami League government in 2024, Babar was gradually acquitted of all charges, including an 8-year corruption sentence and a death sentence in the August 21 grenade attack case.

Deputy Asia Director at the Human Rights Watch (HRW) Meenakshi Ganguly on Thursday said Bangladesh’s interim government has taken significant strides towards a democratic and rights-respecting future, but its progress could evaporate without deep institutional reform and international support. “The interim government needs to protect Rohingya refugees, support credible investigations and reparations for enforced disappearances and provide for civilian oversight over security forces,” Ganguly said. Arrest warrant for Hasina: HRW calls for amending ICT law to ensure fair trials; opposes ban on party Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Nobel Prize laureate Mohammed Yunus, has set up a commission to investigate enforced disappearances and pledged reforms and accountability for rights abuses under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s authoritarian rule, Human Rights Watch said in its World Report 2025 on Thursday. The interim government should reform institutions in line with international human rights standards with the help of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, disband the notorious Rapid Action Battalion, reform security forces to ensure independent oversight and accountability, and pursue justice for the victims of enforced disappearances and their families, said the HRW, adding that interim government pledged accountability and credible elections. During the crackdowns on student-led protests over three weeks in July and August, over 1,000 people were killed and many thousands injured due to excessive and indiscriminate use of ammunition by security forces. For the 546-page world report, in its 35th edition, Human Rights Watch reviewed human rights practices in more than 100 countries. In much of the world, Executive Director Tirana Hassan writes in her introductory essay, governments cracked down and wrongfully arrested and imprisoned political opponents, activists and journalists. Armed groups and government forces unlawfully killed civilians, drove many from their homes, and blocked access to humanitarian aid. In many of the more than 70 national elections in 2024, authoritarian leaders gained ground with their discriminatory rhetoric and policies, according to HRW. Probe into enforced disappearances: HRW says Bangladesh should seek expertise, technical assistance from UN Activists have raised concerns that security forces have continued to carry out abuses, including arbitrary arrests of opposition supporters and journalists and denying them due process and proper access to legal counsel. While the interim government acceded to the United Nations Convention on Enforced Disappearances, security forces have failed to release those unlawfully detained or provide answers to their families about what happened to them, said the HRW. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya who fled Myanmar and are living in refugee camps are at risk of violence at hands of armed groups and gangs. Unregistered refugees risk hunger and do not seek health care out of fear that they will be returned to Myanmar.

The International Crimes Tribunal on Thursday directed the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC) and the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to ensure the preservation of all digital information related to various incidents during the July-August uprising. A tribunal bench, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumdar, issued the order following a petition filed by the prosecution on Thursday. All mobile operators and internet providers have been ordered to assist the prosecution with the necessary information. The “Play to Learn” consortium, comprising Sesame Workshop, BRAC, International Rescue Committee (IRC), and New York University (NYU), has been implementing the 'Play to Learn' project for six years, aiming to promote Early Childhood Development (ECD) among Rohingya children displaced by violence in Cox’s Bazar. The initiative targets children aged 0 to 5 years, using play-based learning to help them overcome trauma, reflecting the Rohingya community's culture and language, according to a press release. On January 16, a learning-sharing session titled “Play with a Purpose: Insights and Impacts from the Play to Learn Partnership” was held at BRAC Centre, Dhaka. BRAC launches mental health hotline ‘Moner Jotno’ A Resource Hub and Marketplace display was also set up. Funded by the Lego Foundation, the project promotes physical and cognitive development through ECD initiatives led by consortium partners. The session was attended by Md. Kamrul Hasan, secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR), as Chief Guest, and Md Anowar Hossain, acting Director General of the NGO Affairs Bureau, as special guest. Dr Muhammad Musa, senior adviser at BRAC Institute of Educational Development (BIED), delivered the welcome address and moderated the event. Md Kamrul Hasan praised the programme for addressing mental health issues among Rohingya children by incorporating cultural history into play labs. Md. Over the past six years, nearly 800,000 Rohingya children, parents, and caregivers have benefited from the project. Research shows 70% of children met development milestones, 91% showed significant mental development, and 96% of caregivers became more attentive. The session reaffirmed the consortium’s commitment to advancing ECD in challenging environments, advocating for play-based solutions in humanitarian response.  

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday filed cases against former railway minister and Rajbari-2 MP Zillul Hakim, his wife Saida Hakim and son Ashiq Mahmud Mitul for allegedly acquiring illegal assets and making unusual bank transactions. The ACC has filed three separate cases against Zillul Hakim and his family while the ACC began investigating corruption allegations against Zillul Hakim on August 29 last year. The case statement says that his wife and son have become wealthy due to Zillul Hakim's illegal assets. Mitul has been accused of acquiring illegal assets worth TK 2.62 crore and making unusual transactions worth Tk 15.50 in a single bank account. On the other hand, the Commission has filed a case against former member of parliament from Mymensingh-10 Fahmi Golandaz Babel and his wife Sharmin Golandaz on the same charges. Transport Sector Extortion: ACC initiates probe against Khandaker Enayet Ullah In the first case, Fahmi has been accused of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 20.11 crore and making unusual transactions worth TK 60.98 crore million and USD 1,71,646 in 16 bank accounts. In the second case, Fahmi and his wife Sharmin have been accused while Sharmin has been accused of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 1.29  crore and making unusual transactions worth Tk 3.17 crore in three bank accounts.

The government has approved the import of 100,000 metric tonnes of rice from India and Pakistan at a total cost of Tk 581.41 crore. The decision was taken during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP), chaired by Economic Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, on Thursday. Import Details from Pakistan The committee approved the import of 50,000 metric tonnes of Atap rice from Pakistan under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement.  Govt approves purchase of 10,000 tonnes of lentils The rice will be procured from the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) at a cost of Tk 304.39 crore, excluding customs duty and VAT. Each metric tonne will cost USD 499, according to a proposal from the Ministry of Food, which facilitated the agreement. Import Details from India Another 50,000 metric tonnes of non-Basmati parboiled rice will be imported from India through an international open tender. The supplier, M/s Gurudiyo Export Corporation Private Limited, will provide the rice under Package-6 at a rate of USD 454.14 per metric tonne. Govt approves imports of wheat, fertilizer, LNG, and printing of school books This transaction is projected to cost Tk 277.02 crore, as per the Ministry of Food's recommendation. The government has approved the procurement of 10,000 metric tonnes of lentils spending Tk 98 crore for the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB). The approval came during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP), chaired by Economic Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed on Thursday. According to meeting sources, the proposal was put forward by the Ministry of Commerce, seeking the procurement of lentils to bolster TCB's supply. Govt approves imports of wheat, fertilizer, LNG, and printing of school books The purchase will be made from Shabnam Vegetable Oil Industries. The total expenditure for the lentils will amount to Tk 97.91 crore, setting the price at Tk 97.91 per kilogram. These lentils will subsequently be distributed among TCB Family Cardholders at subsidised rates to support low-income households. Govt approves import of LNG from Brunei In addition to lentils, the interim government approved the procurement of rice, liquefied natural gas (LNG), soybean oil, palm oil and sugar during the same meeting. The Ministry of Public Administration has issued instructions to take action against government employees posting on social media without adhering to established guidelines. A letter was sent to secretaries, senior secretaries, divisional commissioners, and district administrators on Thursday instructing them to take immediate steps against employees violating social media protocols. ACC seeks info on dual citizenship of govt employees The letter said certain government officials are using social media to post status updates that not only undermine the government’s image but may also jeopardise national security. In its communication, the Ministry pointed out that a number of employees have been disregarding the “Social Media Usage Guidelines for Government Institutions, 2019.” These employees have been sharing documents and posting content that embarrasses the government or creates unnecessary controversy, which goes against the service rules for government personnel. Govt employees to receive dearness allowance The Ministry’s warning said that such behavior is both a breach of the official code of conduct and, in some cases, could be deemed harmful to national security. The Ministry’s guidelines clearly state that employees must refrain from engaging in conduct that is detrimental to the government or violates the code of ethics for public servants. Such actions can be categorized as misconduct under the 'Government Employee Discipline and Appeal Rules, 2018.' The media plays an essential role in driving tobacco control efforts, experts said during a two-day workshop held at BMA Bhaban on Wednesday and Thursday. The workshop, titled "Media for Tobacco Control in Bangladesh", was jointly organised by PROGGA (Knowledge for Progress) and the Anti-Tobacco Media Alliance (ATMA) and saw the participation of 27 journalists from print, television, and online outlets, according to a press release on Thursday. Morshed Ullah appointed SCB’s Legal Affairs head Tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable deaths globally, responsible for over 8 million lives lost each year. Beyond the tragic loss of life, tobacco consumption wreaks havoc on a nation’s socio-economic, environmental, and ecological well-being. In Bangladesh alone, tobacco use claims 161,000 lives annually, alongside causing thousands of disabilities, the speakers said. They added that the mass media must take a proactive role in highlighting the need for stronger tobacco control laws, implementing effective taxation measures, and exposing the harmful tactics of tobacco companies. According to the speakers, the media’s ability to educate the public, influence policy, and create widespread awareness makes it a vital tool in the fight against tobacco-related harm, the release said. Prof Dr Sohel Reza Chowdhury, head of the Department of Epidemiology and Research at the National Heart Foundation, pointed out that tobacco use is a major barrier to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Strengthening tobacco control laws, he said, is critical to overcoming this obstacle. He noted that a draft amendment to Bangladesh’s tobacco control law includes provisions like the elimination of designated smoking areas in public spaces and transport, a ban on tobacco pack displays at sales points, the prohibition of tobacco companies' corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, and a ban on e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products. The experts called on the government to pass the amendment without delay and free from tobacco industry interference. Another pressing issue raised at the workshop was the current flaw in Bangladesh's tobacco taxation system, which allows tobacco products to remain affordable. Dhaka Metro Rail authorities have rescheduled the Friday train service timing. For passenger convenience, the metro will now operate at 3 pm instead of 3:30 pm, the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) said in an office order on Thursday. VAT waived on Dhaka Metro Rail tickets The new schedule will take effect from January 17. According to the DMTCL, the metro rail will operate from Uttara North to Motijheel from 3 pm to 9 pm and from Motijheel to Uttara North from 3:20 pm to 9:40 pm every Friday. Meanwhile, single journey tickets will be available for purchase at Uttara North Metro Rail Station from 2:45 pm on Friday and at Motijheel Metro Rail Station from 3:05 pm. Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) rarely causes fatalities, but continuous mutations could render it deadly, warned Dr Sayedur Rahman, a special assistant at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Addressing a press briefing at the Health Ministry on Thursday, Dr Rahman made the remarks following the death of a woman, Sanjida Akter, who was infected with HMPV. Dr Rahman explained that Sanjida had been ill for over a month, initially seeking treatment locally before being hospitalised as her condition worsened. First reported HMPV case in Bangladesh ends in death “Scientific research indicates that deaths caused by HMPV are extremely rare. Sanjida was primarily affected by Klebsiella pneumonia, which later led to multi-organ failure. She also suffered from obesity and thyroid dysfunction. While pneumonia and organ failure caused her death, she was unfortunately also infected with HMPV,” Dr Rahman clarified. He went to say, “HMpV typically does not result in death. Although it has been spreading in neighbouring countries, the World Health Organisation and other international agencies have established health guidelines to control its transmission.” Dr Rahman emphasised precautionary measures to curb the virus’s spread, urging people experiencing flu-like symptoms to avoid public spaces and wear masks if they must go out. “Frequent handwashing and wearing masks in public can effectively prevent HMPV transmission,” he added. Medical team deployed at Hili Checkpost to combat HMPV virus Responding to questions from journalists, Dr Rahman noted that viruses mutate as they spread, making them potentially more harmful. “COVID-19, for instance, was an old virus that became hazardous due to mutations. Similarly, HMpV may become fatal if its spread and mutation are not controlled,” he warned. Although there is currently no advisory for maintaining social distancing, Dr Rahman recommended limiting interaction with others during illness and staying home to recover. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday said they have no information whether former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken any Indian citizenship. Spokesperson at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Rafiqul Alam came up with the remarks while responding to a question at the ministry’s weekly briefing. He also said it is a matter to be considered by the Indian government on what status she is staying in India. India extends Hasina’s visa amid Bangladesh’s extradition demand The spokesperson also said Dhaka is waiting for India’s reply regarding Bangladesh’s new High Commissioner to India as Bangladesh sought agrimo (recognition). “We are waiting for India’s reply. I don’t think it is taking more time than usual. There is no specific timeframe but usually it is by 3 to 4 months,” said the spokesperson. Regarding the signed deals between Bangladesh and India, he said these all documents are already in the public domain. Apparently referring to deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s reported visa extension, the interim government recently said visa issue does not exist once passport is cancelled. Earlier, the Department of Immigration and Passports revoked the passports of 97 people, including Hasina, due to their alleged involvement in the July killings and alleged involvement in enforced disappearances. Hasina’s visa extension not taken positively by people: Rizvi However, the Hindustan Times, a major national daily of India, reported that Hasina’s visa extension was recently approved, facilitated by India’s Union Home Ministry through the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO). Hasina, 77, has been residing in India since fleeing her country in August last year, following widespread protests that culminated in her resignation. The Department of Environment (DoE) conducted separate drives in seven districts on Thursday and imposed fines of Tk 17.18 lakh. The districts include Mymensingh, Narayanganj, Kamrangirchar in Dhaka, Satkhira, Nilphamari, Madaripur and Gazipur. The DoE conducted the drives in Mymensingh, Narayanganj and Kamrangirchar area in Dhaka on Thursday and imposed a fine of Tk 17,500 and filed 9 cases. DoE fines over Tk 24 lakh, closes 9 brick kilns for polluting environment Three factories were sealed, electric meters were confiscated, utility connections were cut off, and 100 tons of polythene was seized during the drives. Around 2,005 kg of polythene was also confiscated nationwide. Besides, four mobile courts in Satkhira, Nilphamari, Madaripur, and Gazipur imposed fines of Tk 17 lakhs and filed eight cases. The mobile courts also shut down four illegal brick kilns. In Mymensingh, a mobile court aimed at noise pollution fined one vehicle driver Tk 500 and issued warnings to others.   The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, along with the Department of Environment, will continue such drives to combat environmental pollution.        

Law Adviser Asif Nazrul has said all political parties have reached a consensus about an inclusive “July Declaration” recognising the contributions of all parties and forces that participated in the recent mass uprising. Briefing reporters after the meeting in front of the Foreign Service Academy on Thursday, he also said a work plan would be chalked out soon regarding the formation of the July Declaration based on consensus. “A consensus has been reached on the formulation of a declaration for the July mass uprising in the meeting. Everyone agreed that such a declaration is necessary, but many suggestions have been given in this regard,” the adviser said. He said the major suggestions include ensuring everyone’s contributions are properly acknowledged in the declaration and that continuity is appropriately reflected. Besides, Dr Asif said, a suggestion has also been made to clarify the political and legal nature of the declaration. July-August uprising: Govt publishes gazette of 834 martyrs “What has been emphasised as most important is that this declaration should be formulated based on consensus through more intensive discussions among all political parties, forces, students, the masses, and their various forums  who were in favour of the July mass uprising,” the adviser said. He said the participants in the meeting also agreed that as much time as necessary should be given to prepare the declaration. “But, efforts should be made to avoid unnecessary delays or wastage of time. Everyone is unanimous that the declaration should be prepared on the basis of intensive discussions.” Dr Asif said everyone had expressed optimism that efforts to formulate the declaration based on consensus would be successful. “Today's meeting ended with the hope that we will be able to formulate a narrative of unbreakable unity through which we could ensure the fall of a fascist and mass-killer regime of Sheikh Hasina during the mass uprising,” the adviser said. Interim Govt to hold all-party conference over July Proclamation Thursday Replying to a question, he said almost all participants in the meeting agreed that the time needed to prepare a document based on unity and consensus should be taken. “There should be no rush and no unnecessary delays.” Asif said some leaders had proposed that a committee be formed to conduct the discussions in an organised manner to formulate the declaration. Responding to another question, the adviser said there was no division among political parties over the declaration, only differing opinions had emerged regarding the process for holding the discussions. “We welcome diverse opinions. We didn’t see any disunity among the parties… rather, it will be more conducive to stronger unity.” “We’ll actively consider everyone's opinions carefully and decide on a course of action very quickly based on their suggestions,” he said. Dr Asif said leaders of all political parties and forces involved in the July mass uprising, including BNP, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Hefajat-e-Islam, Ganatantra Mancha, the Anti-Discrimination Movement, and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, attended the meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yuns at the Foreign Service Academy. Named after John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth, New Glenn lifted off from Florida, launching from the same historic pad that sent NASA's Mariner and Pioneer spacecraft into space decades ago. High government taxation has made it nearly impossible to offer affordable internet services to rural communities, said industry stakeholders on Thursday. They raised the concern during a roundtable discussion organised by the Technology Industry Policy Advocacy Platform (TIPAP) at The Daily Star auditorium, according to a press release. When a mobile phone user buys a Tk 100 internet package, over Tk 60 directly goes to the government, they said. Post-COP29: Outcome disappoints all stakeholders The government collects significant revenue from 10 crore mobile internet users and shows no interest in reducing internet costs, they added. TIPAP coordinator and Bdjobs founder Fahim Mashroor moderated the discussion, which brought together representatives of leading telecom companies, internet service providers, software firms, and the freelancing community. Mashroor said, "Urban areas have twice as many internet users as rural ones. While an average urban broadband user consumes 100GB of data per month, a rural user consumes only 6GB. In contrast, Indian mobile data users consume three times more data than their Bangladeshi counterparts.”  He added, "This limited mobile data usage keeps Bangladesh far behind neighbouring countries in delivering education, healthcare, and essential services through the internet."  FICCI voices concerns over lack of stakeholder consultation prior to VAT policy revisions Speakers blamed excessive taxation for high mobile data prices. They said that users face a 15% VAT, a 23% supplementary duty, a 2% surcharge, and a 6% revenue-sharing cost. According to mobile operators, these taxes have more than doubled over the past decade. Internet service providers also criticised the monopolistic practices of two government-backed companies controlling the Nationwide Telecommunication Transmission Network (NTTN). These monopolies drive up data transmission costs to rural areas, they also said. Stakeholders urged the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to allow telecom and internet service providers to manage transmission independently, which they believe would lower costs and make internet services more affordable.  Participants criticized the National Board of Revenue’s recent introduction of supplementary duties—3% on mobile internet and 10% on broadband. Twenty-seven new dengue cases were reported in the 24 hours leading up to Thursday morning, bringing the total number of cases to 772 this year. Of the new cases, five were reported in the Dhaka North City Corporation, while 6 others were hospitalised in the Dhaka South City Corporation, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). First reported HMPV case in Bangladesh ends in death The number of deaths remained at 7, with no new fatalities reported during this period, the DGHS added. Currently, 260 dengue patients are receiving treatment in hospitals across the country. Dhaka's air quality is worst in the world this morning Last year, dengue claimed the lives of 575 people. According to the DGHS, there were 101,214 dengue cases and 100,040 recoveries in 2024.

Dhaka University Chhatra Dal President Ganesh Chandra Ray said, "Yesterday, some students went peacefully to demand their rights. Another group, claiming to be students, attacked the students of Dhaka University and other universities. Today, when students went to meet the Home Affairs Adviser in protest, police fired tear gas at them. We condemn this." He addressed the Dhaka University administration, saying, "This is the same scenario as under the Awami League. How can the administration attack students' democratic protests inside a self-governed institution like Dhaka University?" DU Chhatra Dal announces full committee  He demanded medical treatment for the injured students at Dhaka University and NCTB and called for the attackers to be brought to justice. He also urged the DU vice chancellor and proctor to take public responsibility since the attack took place on the university campus. A proposal to conduct Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) viva voce in network-free buildings to ensure transparency has been put forward. The suggestion was made on Thursday (16 January) during a workshop titled "Bangladesh Public Service Commission: Stakeholders' Perspectives" held at the PSC Secretariat. Govt appoints 267 assistant commissioners from 43rd BCS Students from various public and private universities joined the workshop. Prof Dr Mobassher Monem, Chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC), attended the workshop as the chief guest. The students shared their thoughts on the current state of BCS examinations and suggested ways to improve them. They proposed that a dedicated network-free building be established for conducting viva voce exams, arguing that this measure would ensure impartiality by restricting access to only the examiners and candidates, thus eliminating any scope for nepotism or undue influence. In their discussions, students urged the PSC chairman and its members to ensure that no irregularities occur during the viva examinations. 43rd BCS: Meeting about excluded candidates Thursday They also proposed the introduction of a unique identification (ID) system for all eligible candidates participating in PSC exams to enhance fairness and accountability. Responding to the suggestions, the PSC chairman assured attendees that steps were already being taken to address these concerns. Besides the names, gazette numbers, medical case IDs, father's names, current addresses and permanent addresses were mentioned in the list. 13 universities renamed, dropping names of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina The first-phase final list of those who were martyred or injured during the historic mass uprising of July and August 2024 was published on the official website, accessible at https://medical-info.dghs.gov.bd/public on January 1. Over 1000 people were killed and many injured in attacks by law enforcers and then ruling party men during the mass uprising which spanned from July 15 to August 5. Those who were affected during this period but were not included in the first-phase list are invited to submit their applications for consideration with necessary documents, said a Health Ministry handout. Interim Govt to hold all-party conference over July Proclamation Thursday On October 6, last year, the interim government published a preliminary list of people who died during the student-led mass upsurge in July and August. The blue-chip DS-30 index decreased by 4 points, while the Shariah-based DSES index dropped by 6 points. Compared to the previous day, trading volume was reduced by Tk 43 crore. A total of 1,29,000 shares, worth Tk 363 crore, changed hands through 14.83 million transactions. Along with the index decline, the share prices of most companies also fell. But 141 companies saw price increases, while 196 experienced price drops, and the share prices of 62 companies remained unchanged. Among the companies in DSE's A-category, out of 220, 88 saw price increases, 96 saw price declines, and 36 remained unchanged. In the B-category, 88 companies recorded price increases for 24 companies, while 53 saw price drops, and 11 stayed constant. In the Z-category, 86 companies had 26 with rising prices, 46 with falling prices, and 14 that remained unchanged. Most mutual funds also saw a drop in their share prices. Out of 37 mutual funds, 7 experienced price increases, 12 had decreases, and 18 remained the same. On Thursday, the DSE moved C & A Textile Company from the B-category to the Z-category. A directive was issued to brokerage houses and merchant banks to refrain from providing any loans for purchasing shares of this company. In another development, IFAD Autos PLC paid its dividend to investors for the July quarter of last year. This marked the lowest dividend payout by IFAD in the last decade, offering just 1% per share. The downward trend continued in the Chittagong stock market as well. The Chittagong Stock Exchange's (CSE) CSE-50 index fell by 3.43 points, and the CSE-30 index dropped by 55.31 points, ending at 1,096.35 and 11,759.50 points, respectively. Besides, the CSI index dropped by 5.14 points, closing at 934.59 points. Alongside the decline, trading volume also decreased on the CSE. Continuous decline in stock indices for four days Compared to the previous day, turnover dropped by Tk 4.68 crore as the total turnover for the day was Tk 4.72 crore, down from Tk 9.40 crore in the previous trading session. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has renewed its efforts to explore business opportunities in Africa by addressing the challenges.   As part of its renewed initiative, the ministry hosted an inter-ministerial meeting on January 15 chaired by Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin. The meeting, the first of its kind, underscored the ministry's commitment to facilitating constructive dialogue and supporting the efforts of Bangladeshi businesses in Africa. Chinese envoy discusses bilateral ties with foreign secretary The discussion centered on addressing challenges faced by Bangladeshi entrepreneurs operating in Africa and exploring actionable solutions. The meeting also focused on how Bangladesh Missions in Africa, in coordination with the relevant ministries and agencies of Bangladesh, can facilitate the import of agro-products, including cotton, from Africa, while also encouraging Bangladeshi entrepreneurs to expand their presence on the continent. Key proposals included the establishment of free zones for importing agro products, simplification of the Letter of Credit (LC) process, and exploring fund support options through Bangladesh Bank, said the MoFA on Thursday. Dhaka shares national aspiration for "credible, inclusive" polls with UN Representatives from the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Textiles and Jute, National Board of Revenue (NBR), Bangladesh Bank, Bangladesh Cotton Association, Cotton Development Board, and Bangladesh Textile Mills Association took part in the discussions. Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur has called on businesses across the country to ensure proper compliance with regulatory frameworks, emphasising that the central bank will remain vigilant in monitoring adherence to financial guidelines. Dr Mansur made the remarks during a courtesy meeting with the Board of Directors of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI), led by its President Taskeen Ahmed, at the Bangladesh Bank headquarters on Thursday. Businesses’ Concerns During the meeting, DCCI President Taskeen Ahmed highlighted the difficulties faced by businesses, particularly in light of the recent hike in VAT and tax rates, which he said have intensified economic pressures. “The high bank interest rates are significantly increasing the cost of doing business,” he remarked. Taskeen Ahmed suggested that lowering interest rates could facilitate the flow of credit to the private sector and stimulate investment. NBR reforms possible, but can’t be done overnight: Mazid He also addressed the challenges encountered by small and medium-sized enterprises (CMSMEs), pointing out that complex documentation requirements for accessing the Credit Guarantee Scheme often leave entrepreneurs struggling to secure necessary funding. Proposals for Economic Relief In response to the current economic climate, Taskeen Ahmed proposed extending the loan classification period by at least three to six months to provide businesses with more time to adjust and improve repayment capabilities. Additionally, he called for relaxing some of the stringent policies surrounding the establishment of overseas business offices, which he believes would encourage export and investment activities. Bangladesh Bank's Response Governor Dr Mansur assured the DCCI delegation that Bangladesh Bank has been taking proactive measures to manage inflation and stabilise the market. He expressed optimism that these efforts would soon yield positive results, especially with inflation expected to decrease in the coming months. "We have directed banks to open letters of credit (LCs) without margin requirements to help stabilize the prices of essential goods, particularly ahead of Ramadan." Bangladesh Bank considering policy rate hike as living costs soar Regarding currency stability, Dr Mansur reassured the business community that there is no shortage of dollars in the market. He noted that while Bangladesh Bank does not control the exchange rate, it closely monitors the market to ensure dollar price stability. “The exchange rate is determined by the forces of supply and demand, but we are committed to ensuring the stability of the dollar in the market,” he said. Interest Rates The Governor mentioned that if inflation falls to around 7% by June-July 2025, bank interest rates could potentially decrease, benefiting businesses in the long term. In response to the DCCI President's request, Dr Mansur confirmed that Bangladesh Bank would review the possibility of extending the loan classification deadline and relaxing the conditions for setting up overseas business offices. Savings Certificate sales resume While expressing his commitment to supporting the business community, Dr Mansur urged businesses to strictly adhere to regulatory frameworks to ensure the stability and growth of the economy. “We will be strict about compliance, and businesses must adhere to regulations to maintain a healthy financial ecosystem,” he said. Senior officials from both Bangladesh Bank and DCCI, including DCCI Senior Vice President Razeev H Chowdhury and Vice President Md Salem Sulaiman, were present at the meeting.  

Muhammad Abdul Mazid, a member of the advisory committee to initiate reforms in the National Board of Revenue (NBR), on Thursday said they will propose implementable proposals for the revenue collecting authority. “We will give an implementable proposal, the government would go that way,” he said while holding a view exchange meeting with the Economic Reporters’ Forum at the NBR. But he said that this suggestion must not be implemented overnight. VAT on hotels, restaurants to be revised to previous level: NBR  “We have to step into a path, we have to initiate the process, this is not like that we will not be able to do,” he said. Mazid, former chairman of NBR, currently is chairman of the Social Development Foundation. He said it won’t be wise to expect a hundred percent achievement right now. “That’s why we are not going to give specific time frame,” he said. He also mentioned that there is nothing to be revolutionary. “This can’t be done, our society also does not support that system,” he said. The former NBR chairman said that the committee wanted to build up a better understanding among all stakeholders. He said that the committee already gave an interim report. “Now it is in the court of the government,” he said. Ailing VAT collection: NBR wants answers from field level offices But he put emphasis on the implementation of the proposals during the tenure of the interim government. The committee members and former NBR chairman Nasiruddin Ahmed and former NBR member Farid Uddin were present at the meeting while ERF president Doulot Akter Mala led the ERF team. The government on October 9 last year formed the committee to provide recommendations on tax policy reforms, improvements in tax administration, automation and other related matters. The other two members are: Delwar Hossain and Aminur Rahman.

Bangladesh Bank is considering raising the policy interest rate again as the nation grapples with persistently high inflation and increasing living costs. “The central bank typically increases the repo rate—considered the policy interest rate—to curb high inflation. An announcement may be made in the upcoming monetary policy for the January-June period of the current fiscal year,” said a Bangladesh Bank assistant director, speaking on condition of anonymity. The official added that the repo rate, or the rate at which commercial banks borrow from the central bank by pledging treasury bills, is likely to be raised from 10 percent to 10.50 percent. This potential hike has sparked concerns among business leaders. Executive President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Mohammad Hatem, warned that higher interest rates will increase borrowing costs at the consumer level, further driving up the cost of business and commerce. Hatem also criticized the timing of the decision, pointing out that the government recently raised VAT and other taxes on over 100 goods and services, compounding the challenges posed by high inflation. Despite the possible increase in the policy interest rate, the interest rate on loans for government officials and bankers is expected to remain fixed at 4 percent, a point that has drawn criticism from stakeholders who claim it creates inequality in the credit market. Economic analysts have noted that the persistent dollar crisis and Bangladesh Bank's contractionary monetary policy have significantly hampered private sector investment. Private sector credit growth slowed to 7.66 percent in November, one of the lowest rates in recent years. Inflation remains a key concern, with average inflation hitting 10.34 percent in December. This marks over two and a half years of inflation hovering around 10 percent. The government has set a target of bringing inflation down to 7.50 percent by the end of this fiscal year. Analysts warn that recent increases in customs duties and taxes on over 100 products, along with the dearness allowance for government employees, could push inflation even higher in the coming months.

A 30-year-old man was killed in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area early Thursday after being hit by a covered van following an altercation with its driver. The deceased, Sujan Sarkar, worked as a helper for a Green Line Paribahan bus and was the son of Gopal Chandra Sarkar. The incident began late Wednesday night when a Green Line Paribahan bus traveling from Khagrachhari to Dhaka became stuck in traffic at Matuail. According to Sub-Inspector Emran Hossain of Jatrabari Police Station, the bus’s side mirror was smashed by a covered van, sparking a heated argument between Sujan and the van driver. During the altercation, the van driver attempted to flee the scene but hit Sujan in the process, leaving him critically injured. Sujan was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead around 3:10 am. Man killed as car hits him in Dhaka's Uttara Police are actively searching for the driver of the covered van, who fled after the incident.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived in Ukraine's capital on Thursday with a pledge to help guarantee the country’s security for a century, days before Donald Trump is sworn in as U.S. president. The British government says Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will sign a “100-Year Partnership” treaty in Kyiv covering areas including defense, science, energy and trade. Starmer’s unannounced visit is his first trip to Ukraine since he took office in July. He visited the country in 2023 when he was opposition leader, and has twice held talks with Zelenskyy in London since becoming prime minister. The war will be three years old next month. The Italian defense chief was also in Kyiv on Thursday, two days after Germany’s defense minister visited and three days after Zelenskyy talked by phone with French President Emmanuel Macron. The flurry of diplomatic activity came in the run-up to Trump’s inauguration next Monday, which is expected to bring a departure from the outgoing U.S. administration’s pledge to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes to defeat Russia. Trump has also indicated he wants Europe to shoulder more of the burden for helping Ukraine. On a gray and frosty morning, Starmer was greeted at Kyiv railway station by Martin Harris, the U.K.'s ambassador to Ukraine, and Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine’s envoy to London. “We’re a long way into this conflict,” Starmer said. "We mustn’t let up.” The U.K., one of Ukraine’s biggest military backers, has pledged 12.8 billion pounds ($16 billion) in military and civilian aid since Russia’s full-scale invasion three years ago, and has trained more than 50,000 Ukrainian troops on British soil. Starmer is to announce another 40 million pounds ($49 million) for Ukraine’s postwar economic recovery. But the U.K.’s role is dwarfed by that of the United States, and there is deep uncertainty over the fate of American support for Ukraine once Trump takes office on Jan. 20. The president-elect has balked at the cost of U.S. aid to Kyiv, says he wants to bring the war to a swift end and is planning to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, for whom he has long expressed admiration. Kyiv’s allies have rushed to flood Ukraine with as much support as possible before Trump’s inauguration, with the aim of putting Ukraine in the strongest position possible for any future negotiations to end the war. Zelenskyy has said that in any peace negotiation, Ukraine would need assurances about its future protection from its much bigger neighbor. Britain says its 100-year pledge is part of that assurance and will help ensure Ukraine is “never again vulnerable to the kind of brutality inflicted on it by Russia,” which seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and attempted a full-scale invasion in February 2022. The deal commits the two sides to cooperate on defense — especially maritime security against Russian activity in the Baltic Sea, Black Sea and Sea of Azov — and on technology projects including drones, which have become vital weapons for both sides in the war. The treaty also includes a system to help track stolen Ukrainian grain exported by Russia from occupied parts of the country. “Putin’s ambition to wrench Ukraine away from its closest partners has been a monumental strategic failure. Instead, we are closer than ever, and this partnership will take that friendship to the next level,” Starmer said ahead of the visit. “This is not just about the here and now, it is also about an investment in our two countries for the next century, bringing together technology development, scientific advances and cultural exchanges, and harnessing the phenomenal innovation shown by Ukraine in recent years for generations to come.” Zelenskyy says he and Starmer also will discuss a plan proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron that would see troops from France and other Western countries stationed in Ukraine to oversee a ceasefire agreement. Zelenskyy has said any such proposal should go alongside a timeline for Ukraine to join NATO. The alliance’s 32 member countries say that Ukraine will join one day, but not until after the war. Trump has appeared to sympathize with Putin’s position that Ukraine should not be part of NATO. As the grinding war nears the three-year mark, both Russia and Ukraine are pushing for battlefield gains ahead of possible peace talks. Ukraine has started a second offensive in Russia’s Kursk region, where it is struggling to hang onto a chunk of territory it captured last year, and has stepped up drone and missile attacks on weapons sites and fuel depots inside Russia. Moscow is slowly taking territory at the cost of high casualties along the 600-mile (1,000-kilometer) front line in eastern Ukraine and launching intense barrages at Ukraine’s energy system, seeking to deprive Ukrainians of heat and light in the depths of winter. A major Russian ballistic and cruise missile attack on regions across Ukraine on Wednesday compelled authorities to shut down the power grid in some areas.

Billionaire Elon Musk has posted on X about Tulip Siddiq who resigned as the UK’s anti-corruption minister amid a controversy over links to her aunt, ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. “The Labour minister for child welfare shields the predators and their anti-corruption minister is corrupt,” the billionaire posted on X on January 15, sharing a post of Mario Nawfal. Siddiq, who was responsible for tackling corruption in financial markets, was named last month in an anti-corruption investigation in Bangladesh against Hasina. Tulip Siddiq steps down as Treasury minister The investigation alleged that Siddiq’s family was involved in brokering a 2013 deal with Russia for a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh in which large sums of money were said to have been embezzled. Tulip Siddiq said that she was quitting as economic secretary to the Treasury, saying the issue was becoming “a distraction from the work of the government.” The minister faced further questions about her links to her aunt’s government after reports in the Sunday Times and Financial Times newspapers alleged that she had used two London apartments given to her by associates of Bangladesh’s Awami League, led by Hasina. Tulip Siddiq questioned in UK over graft allegation Tulip’s independent adviser Magnus said Siddiq hadn't breached ministerial standards, but given her role in government “it is regrettable that she was not more alert to the potential reputational risks — both to her and the government — arising from her close family’s association with Bangladesh.”

Police have dispersed protesters when they tried to march towards the Home Ministry demanding the arrest of those involved in Wednesday’s attack on ethnic minority students. The protesters under the banner of "Aggrieved Student-Public" gathered at Raju Sculpture of Dhaka University on Thursday.   During the rally, the protesters carried banners condemning the attack carried out by a group named “Students for Sovereignty”, and demanding justice for the ethnic minority students.

The death toll in a monthslong standoff between police and miners trapped while working illegally in an abandoned gold mine in South Africa has risen to at least 87, police said Thursday as they wound down a rescue operation that has pulled more than 240 survivors out from deep underground. National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said that 78 bodies were retrieved from the mine in an official rescue operation that began Monday, while another nine had been recovered previously. She did not give details on how those other bodies were retrieved. Community groups have said they launched their own rescue attempts when authorities said last year they would not help the hundreds of miners because they were “criminals.” The miners are suspected to have died of starvation and dehydration, although no causes of death have been released. South African authorities have been criticized for their approach, having cut off food and supplies to the miners for a period of time last year in an attempt, as one Cabinet minister said, to “smoke them out” of the Buffelsfontein Gold Mine. That tactic has been called “horrific” by one of South Africa's biggest trade unions. Police and the mine owners are also accused by community members and civic groups of taking away ropes and dismantling a pulley system the miners used to enter the mine through one shaft and send supplies down from the surface. A court ordered authorities last year to allow food and water to be sent down to the miners, while another court ruling last week forced the government to launch a rescue operation. Many say the unfolding disaster underground was clear weeks ago, when community members sporadically pulled decomposing bodies out of the mine, some with notes attached pleading for food to be sent down. “If the police had acted earlier, we would not be in this situation, with bodies piling up," said Johannes Qankase, a local community leader. “It is a disgrace for a constitutional democracy like ours. Somebody needs to account for what has happened here.” He said he was saddened “seeing so many pathology vans coming to get bodies of dead people.” South Africa's second biggest political party, which is part of a government coalition, called for President Cyril Ramaphosa to establish an independent inquiry to find out “why the situation was allowed to get so badly out of hand.” “The scale of the disaster underground at Buffelsfontein is rapidly proving to be as bad as feared,” the Democratic Alliance party said. Authorities now believe that nearly 2,000 miners were underground working illegally at the mine near the town of Stilfontein, southwest of Johannesburg, since August last year. Many of them resurfaced on their own over the last few months, police said, and all the survivors have been arrested, even as some of them emerged appearing badly emaciated and barely able to walk as they were helped to ambulances. Mathe said at least 13 children had also come out of the mine before the official rescue operation, which authorities had declined to launch for months. Police announced Wednesday that they were ending that rescue operation after three days and believed no one else was underground. A camera would be sent down on Thursday in a cage that has been used to pull out survivors and bodies to make certain no one was still down there, Mathe said. The mine is one of the deepest in South Africa and is a maze of tunnels and levels and has several shafts leading into it. The miners were working up to 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) underground in different groups. Police have maintained that the miners were able to come out through several different shafts but refused out of fear of being arrested. That’s been disputed by groups representing the miners, who say hundreds were trapped and left starving in grim conditions underground with decomposing bodies around them. The initial police operation last year to force the miners to come out and give themselves up for arrest was part of a larger nationwide clampdown on illegal mining called Vala Umgodi, or Close the Hole. Illegal mining is often in the news in South Africa and a major problem for authorities as large groups go into mines that have been shut down by companies to extract any leftover deposits. The miners, known as “zama zamas” — "hustlers" or “chancers” in the Zulu language — are often armed and part of criminal syndicates, the government says, and they rob South Africa of more than $1 billion a year in gold deposits. They are often undocumented foreign nationals and authorities said Thursday that the vast majority of miners who came out of the Buffelsfontein mine were from Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Lesotho and in South Africa illegally. Police said they seized gold, explosives, firearms and more than $2 million in cash from the miners and have defended their hardline approach. “By providing food, water and necessities to these illegal miners, it would be the police entertaining and allowing criminality to thrive,” Mathe said Wednesday. And while the police operation has been condemned by civic groups and others, the disaster hasn't provoked a strong outpouring of anger across South Africa, where the zama zamas have long been considered especially troublesome in a country that struggles with high rates of violent crime.

The Department of National Savings (DNS) has resumed its services, including the sale and redemption of savings certificates, following the completion of a server upgrade. The upgrade work caused a suspension of all savings certificate transactions for about six days. DNS officials confirmed that the server became fully operational on Wednesday, allowing normal services to resume from Thursday. Despite the restoration of services, customer turnout was notably low on Thursday at the Bangladesh Bank’s Motijheel office. Officials attributed this to a lack of public awareness about the server’s reactivation. Many customers who visited during the outage may not know that the system is now operational, said an official from the central bank. The HC bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasreen Akter passed the order after hearing. Earlier, on December 18, last year, the High Court acquitted six death-row convicts including Lutfozzaman Babar in a case filed under the Special Powers Act. On April 1, 2004, 10 trucks of arms were seized at the Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Ltd jetty. Two cases – one under the Arms Act and another under the Special Powers Act – were filed with Karnaphuli Police Station the following day, naming 50 people as accused in the arms case and 52 in the other. Babar among 6 acquitted in ten-truck arms haul case On January 30, 2014, Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge SM Mujibur Rahman sentenced 14 people, including Babar, to death under the Special Powers Act. Allegations have been lodged with the International Crimes Tribunal against 41 people, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former military advisor Tarique Ahmed Siddique, over the killing of Dr Fayez Ahmed, Naib-e-Ameer of Lakshmipur district Jamaat-e-Islami, who was shot dead at his residence. The accused also included former Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, former Additional Director General of the RAB Ziaul Ahsan, and former CEO of the RAB-11 Tarique Sayed Mohammad. The victim’s son, Dr Hasanul Bannah, submitted the allegation of crimes against humanity at the office of the court’s chief prosecutor, said plaintiff’s lawyer Abdus Sattar Palowan. According to the allegations, an armed group in a vehicle displaying Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) stickers arrived under Dr Foyez’s house in the Temuhani area of the district headquarters around 12:30 am on December 13, 2013. The group forcibly broke open the gate and entered the victim’s home. The High Court has extended the status quo on Nagad’s administrator until the final order is made, thus preventing Bangladesh Bank-appointed administrator and management board from taking any fresh action beyond regular business operations. The order was issued on Wednesday (Jan 15) by a bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury, which also stated that a final verdict on the matter will come by January 30, 2025. Earlier on December 18, 2024, the High Court imposed a two-week status quo on all activities of the administrator appointed in Nagad. When contacted, Assistant Attorney General Muzahedul Islam Shahin has said a writ petition concerning Bangladesh Bank and Nagad is currently under judicial consideration, and a status quo order is in place regarding Nagad. Govt condemns attack on ethnic minority students in Dhaka Barrister Muhammad Nawaz Jamir, representing Nagad, said, “The Honorable High Court has issued an order maintaining status quo on administrative activities concerning Nagad. The Bangladesh Bank did all these things in Nagad under the Payment and Settlement System Act 2024, although that act was not gazetted till that time. Challenging all these activities, Md Shafayet Alam, an executive director of Nagad, filed the writ petition with the High Court. After the hearing, the High Court also issued a rule nisi, questioning the legality of the administrator’s appointment. Police have arrested a 19-year-old youth over raping a 10-year-old flower seller under the Shahbagh metro rail station in the capital. Ramna Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Tarekul Islam said the youth, named Raihan, was arrested on Wednesday night. Hearing screams, passersby came forward and detained the youth, he said. Sanjida Akter, the first patient in Bangladesh diagnosed with the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), has passed away while undergoing treatment at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Mohakhali. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed the information on Thursday. According to DGHS officials, "This is the only HMPV case we have reported this year. The patient passed away on Wednesday evening. However, it does not seem that HMpv alone caused her death." They explained that an additional organism was found in her system, and she was already suffering from multiple complications. It cannot be conclusively said that HMPV was the sole reason for her death. There is no cause for panic regarding HMPV, they added. A briefing on the matter is scheduled for 1:15 pm today by Dr Md Sayedur Rahman, Special Assistant Professor at the Ministry of Health. Medical team deployed at Hili Checkpost to combat HMPV virus Earlier, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) revealed on Sunday (January 12) that the patient, a woman from Bhairab in Kishoreganj district, had contracted the virus. The interim government has strongly condemned Wednesday’s attack on a peaceful gathering by a group of ethnic minority students in front of NTCB in Motijheel area of the capital. The government has ordered an investigation into the attack, and two persons have already been arrested in this connection, Chief Adviser's Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder said on Thursday. Other perpetrators are being identified and will soon be arrested, he said. All miscreants will be brought to justice, according to a statement of the interim government. The Traffic Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) filed 2,129 cases against offenders on charge of violating traffic rules after conducting enforcement drives in parts of the capital. Sixty-seven vehicles were dumped, and 44 others towed away, according to the DMP. The drives were conducted by eight traffic divisions of the DMP on Wednesday to ensure discipline on the city streets, said Deputy Commissioner (DC media) of DMP Talebur Rahman. The DMP vowed to continue its drive to bring back traffic discipline in the city. 

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen on Thursday met Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The two sides had in-depth exchanges of views on Bangladesh-China relations, bilateral cooperation and joint celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Bangladesh. Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain will pay an official visit to China at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on January 20-24 which is described as “very important first bilateral visit” after the formation of the interim government led by Prof Muhammad Yunus in August last year. Two people, including a three-wheeler trolley driver, were killed and four others injured as the vehicle carrying them overturned in Mongla upazila of Bagerhat early Thursday. The deceased were named as driver Didar Mollah, 30, son of Jafar Mollah of Khulna’s Dacope upazila and day labour Rokan Uddin, 60, son of Wazed Ali Sheikh of Sonaitala village under Mongla upazila. The injured are Wahed Mollick, Ayub Sardar, Milon Mallick, and Tajmir Sheikh. Wahed was undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College and Hospital and the trio at Mongla Upazila Health Complex. The majority of companies witnessed a rise in share prices during the first hour of trading on the week’s final business day. Alongside the price increases, the benchmark indices also saw a positive movement. On Thursday, trading at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) began with 196 companies registering gains, while 78 saw declines, and 79 remained unchanged in price. The DSEX, DSE's benchmark index, increased by 7 points, and the Shariah-based DSES index rose by 1 point. However, the DS30 index, which tracks blue-chip stocks, dropped by 2 points. During the initial hour, a total of 3,32,089 shares changed hands through 3.85 lakh transactions, amounting to Tk 89 crore in turnover. In an additional development, the DSE downgraded C&A Textiles to the Z category from the B category at the start of the day. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has decided to revise the VAT on hotels and restaurants to the previous level. NBR Member (VAT Policy) Mohammad Belal Hossain Chowdhury disclosed the decision on Thursday. The NBR will issue a notification in this  regard today. Ailing VAT collection: NBR wants answers from field level offices On January 9, the government had issued an order increasing a 15 percent VAT from the previous 5 percent in the sector. But the decision sparked widespread criticisms in the country. Canada's energy minister came to Washington this week to warn U.S. lawmakers about President-elect Donald Trump's tariffs threat on Canada: They'd inflict economic pain on Americans, with higher prices and job losses. Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada's minister of energy and natural resources, said he feels obligated to sound the alarm about the inflationary risks being created by a president who was elected in large part on the promise of bringing down prices. "It will mean higher gas prices, it will mean higher food prices, it will mean higher natural gas prices for heating people's homes,” he told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “It will mean higher electricity prices. That's not something Donald Trump campaigned on. He campaigned on actually reducing the price of energy.” Trump has threatened to impose sweeping 25% tariffs on Canada as well as on Mexico. He's also threatened tariffs on China and Europe, creating a sense of uncertainty about whether this is simply a negotiating ploy or a massive restructuring of U.S. foreign relations. Trump and his team in recent days have doubled down on his promise to impose tariffs on other nations and downplayed the risk of higher inflation. “In his first term, President Trump instituted tariffs that created jobs, spurred investment, and resulted in no inflation," said Karoline Leavitt, a transition spokesperson who is also the incoming White House press secretary. "President Trump will work quickly to fix and restore an economy that puts American workers first by re-shoring American jobs, lowering inflation, raising real wages, lowering taxes, cutting regulations, and unshackling American energy.” Canada is looking at putting retaliatory tariffs on American orange juice, toilets and some steel products if Trump follows through with his threat. When Trump imposed higher tariffs during his first term in office, Canada announced billions of dollars in new duties in 2018 against the U.S. in a tit-for-tat response to new taxes on Canadian steel and aluminum. The dispute never triggered broader inflation across the economy, even if it exacted higher costs for some. The windy, flame-fanning weather that put the nation's second most-populous metropolitan region on edge eased up Wednesday as firefighters made significant gains against the two massive wildfires burning around Los Angeles. A “Particularly Dangerous Situation” red-flag warning expired without causing explosive fire growth as feared, though forecasters said gusty winds could linger into early Thursday, mostly in the mountains. Temperatures were predicted to drop, and a deep marine layer was expected to move in over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles. Those improved conditions should help fire crews make even more headway and allow residents to return to their neighborhoods to begin rebuilding. But Santa Ana winds could return early next week. “Good news: We are expecting a much-needed break from the fire weather concerns to close this week,” the weather service posted on social media Wednesday afternoon. “Bad News: Next week is a concern. While confident that we will NOT see a repeat of last week, dangerous fire weather conditions are expected.” Still, firefighters and police faced new challenges. Since the beginning of the outbreak last week, authorities have arrested about half a dozen people accused of setting new, small fires that were quickly knocked down. One suspect admitted starting a fire in a tree “because he liked the smell of burning leaves,” Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said. Another said “she enjoyed causing chaos and destruction,” the chief said Wednesday. Google says its artificial intelligence chatbot Gemini will deliver up-to-date news from The Associated Press in the tech giant's first such deal with a news publisher. Google announced the deal in a blog post Wednesday, saying that AP “will now deliver a feed of real-time information to help further enhance the usefulness of results displayed in the Gemini app.” AP's chief revenue officer, Kristin Heitmann, said it is part of a longstanding relationship with the search giant “based on working together to provide timely, accurate news and information to global audiences.” "We are pleased Google recognizes the value of AP’s journalism as well as our commitment to nonpartisan reporting, in the development of its generative AI products,” Heitmann said in a written statement. Neither company has disclosed how much Google will pay AP for the content. Google declined further comment on how it would present information from AP’s journalism and whether it would credit the news organization or link back to the original articles. Gemini, formerly known as Bard, has been Google's answer to the demand for generative AI tools that can compose documents, generate images, help program code or perform other work. AP has sought to diversify its revenue stream in recent years and in 2023 signed a deal with OpenAI, maker of ChatGPT, enabling the AI company to license AP's archive of news stories to train future versions of its AI systems. Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was stabbed six times by an unidentified assailant in an attempted burglary at his Mumbai residence early on Thursday. The incident occurred around 2am at his Bandra home. Khan was admitted to Lilavati Hospital at 3:30am, where he was immediately treated for injury. Dr. Niraj Uttamani, Chief Operating Officer at Lilavati Hospital, confirmed that Khan sustained six stab wounds, two of which are deep, including one near the spine. Khan is currently undergoing surgery, which is being led by a team of medical experts including neurosurgeon Dr. Nitin Dange, cosmetic surgeon Dr. Leena Jain, and anaesthesiologist Dr. Nisha Gandhi. Dr. Uttamani stated that the neurosurgery has been completed, but the plastic surgeon is still working on repairing the wounds. The actor is out of danger, and further updates are expected shortly. Khan’s team issued an official statement confirming the attempted burglary and his surgery. The statement urged media and fans to remain patient, as the matter is under police investigation. Initial reports indicate that an intruder broke into Khan’s residence while he was asleep. A struggle ensued, during which Khan was stabbed before the burglar fled the scene. An FIR has been filed at the Bandra Police Station, and three employees of Khan’s household have been taken in for questioning. One of the employees was also injured in the altercation. The Mumbai Crime Branch has launched a parallel investigation and formed seven teams to track down the suspect. Ridesharing services, introduced through mobile apps or websites, initially gained popularity due to their speed, affordability and convenience compared to public transportation. Despite the initial success, the sector is now struggling with growing dissatisfaction among both passengers and drivers. Complaints against ridesharing companies have surged, but the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has been unable to act due to the absence of robust regulatory guidelines. Traffic congestion escalates in Narayanganj city due to rules violation Jubair Khan, a resident of Khilgaon, shared his frustrations, “Using apps was once hassle-free and efficient. Now, finding a rider through apps is expensive and difficult. We often have to go to main roads to find rides.” Declining Usage and Non-renewal of Licences While global ridesharing usage is on the rise, Bangladesh has witnessed a sharp decline in bike-based ride-hailing. Of the 15 registered ridesharing companies, only two—Pathao and Uber—have renewed their licences, indicating their continued dominance. Thirteen companies have failed to renew their licences, with some withdrawing from the market altogether. Globally, the ridesharing market grew from $61 billion in 2018 to $218 billion in 2025, with projections to reach $285 billion by 2030. Over 100 million people are expected to use these services within the next three years. In Bangladesh, however, drivers like Shankar have been avoiding app-based platforms. “We no longer use apps frequently as bonuses and discounts have been removed. However, drivers claim unregistered riders outnumber the registered ones, creating a saturated market. Full-time drivers earn between Tk30,000 and Tk50,000 per month, while part-time drivers make Tk12,000 to Tk15,000. Yet, many drivers face financial strain. Mintu Mia, an Uber driver, outlined his daily expenses: earning Tk3,500 from rides, he spends Tk3,154 on Uber commissions, fuel, platform fees, booking fees, meals, and rent, leaving him with just Tk346 in savings. Rising interest payments reflect growing dependence on loans, increasingly from foreign sources Beyond financial struggles, drivers endure physical and environmental risks daily. Proposals for Reform The Dhaka Ridesharing Drivers’ Union recently met the Labour Reform Commission to propose key reforms. According to union president Sajib Hossain, the proposals include amending the current ride-sharing policy, setting a fair fare structure, capping commission rates, eliminating platform and booking fees, and ensuring drivers are not penalised for carrying illegal items on behalf of passengers. Additional measures, such as introducing waiting and cancellation fees and forming a dedicated regulatory commission, were also recommended to protect drivers’ rights and sustain the sector. The Labour Reform Commission has proposed including drivers in the Somota pension scheme, part of the Universal Pension Scheme for low-income individuals. Under this scheme, drivers would pay Tk500 monthly, matched by the government, to secure a pension of Tk1,530 per month after 10 years. Safety Initiatives Ridesharing companies have emphasised the importance of using apps to ensure passenger safety. Apps allow users to track rides, view driver details, and report misconduct. Pathao and Uber launched a joint campaign to enhance safety standards and customer experiences. This initiative includes driver training on safety measures, document verification, and awareness programmes. Ailing VAT collection: NBR wants answers from field level offices Legal Framework The BRTA has approved 12 ridesharing companies under the Ride-sharing Service Guidelines 2017, introduced to legalise and regulate the sector. These include Pathao Limited, Uber Bangladesh Ltd, and others. While app-based ride-hailing services began in Dhaka in 2015, the cabinet approved the “Ride-sharing Service Guideline 2017” in 2019. The BRTA mandates that ride-sharing cars adhere to fare limits set under the Taxicab Service Guidelines 2010, which specify a base fare of Tk85 for the first two kilometres and Tk34 for each subsequent kilometre, with a waiting charge of Tk8.50 every two minutes. Despite these measures, the sector’s future remains uncertain as it struggles to balance passenger convenience, driver welfare, and regulatory oversight, said many users.

Female family ties were at the heart of social networks in Celtic society in Britain before the Roman invasion, a new analysis suggests. Genetic evidence from a late Iron Age cemetery shows that women were closely related while unrelated men tended to come into the community from elsewhere, likely after marriage. An examination of ancient DNA recovered from 57 graves in Dorset in southwest England shows that two-thirds of the individuals were descended from a single maternal lineage. The cemetery was used from around 100 B.C. to 200 A.D. “That was really jaw-dropping – it’s never been observed before in European prehistory,” said study co-author Lara Cassidy, a geneticist at Trinity College Dublin. The findings, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, suggest that women stayed in the same circles throughout life – maintaining social networks and likely inheriting or managing land and property. Meanwhile “it’s your husband who is coming in as a relative stranger, dependent on a wife’s family for land and livelihood,” said Cassidy. This pattern – called matrilocality – is historically rare. Archaeologists studying grave sites in Britain and Europe have previously only detected the opposite pattern – women leaving their homes to join their husband’s family group – in other ancient time periods, from the neolithic to the early Medieval period, said Guido Gnecchi-Ruscone at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, who was not part of the study. When the AQI value for particle pollution is between 50 and 100, air quality is considered ‘moderate’, usually sensitive individuals should consider limiting prolonged outdoor exertion, between 101 and 150, air quality is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, between 150 and 200 is ‘unhealthy’, between 201 and 300 is said to be 'very unhealthy', while a reading of 301+ is considered 'hazardous', posing serious health risks to residents. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said late Wednesday that a ceasefire agreement with Hamas is still not complete and the final details are being worked out. Netanyahu's statement comes hours after the United States and Qatar announced the deal, which would pause the devastating 15-month war in Gaza and clear the way for dozens of hostages to go home. The conflict has destabilized the Middle East and sparked worldwide protests. However, he said that Hamas has backtracked on an earlier understanding of the ceasefire agreement. His statement could indicate that obstacles remain to implementing the deal. Under the three-phased deal, Hamas would release dozens of hostages in exchange for Israel releasing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. It would also allow hundreds of thousands of people displaced in Gaza to return to what remains of their homes. Israel, Hamas agree to ceasefire and hostage release: Mediators Netanyahu said that Hamas was objecting to a part of the agreement that gave Israel the ability to veto the release of certain Palestinian prisoners. Hamas was trying to dictate which Palestinian prisoners would be released, Netanyahu said. He said he told Israeli negotiators to stand firm on the earlier agreement. Hamas did not immediately respond to Netanyahu’s statement. The statement came soon after President Joe Biden wrapped up a final farewell address to the nation after earlier touting the role of American diplomacy in negotiating the ceasefire. The Israel Hamas-war has killed more than 46,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to health authorities there. The Health Ministry does not distinguish between fighters and civilians, but says women and children make up more than half the fatalities.

Traffic congestion in Narayanganj city is becoming increasingly severe as many drivers, including those of private cars, rickshaws, auto-rickshaws, and human haulers, continue to flout road rules. To avoid the daily gridlocks, some drivers are choosing to travel in the opposite direction creating new traffic jams. In addition, the situation is worsened by illegal vehicles parked along the roads, which are narrowing the streets. This traffic problem has been affecting city residents year-round, with major roads such as Bangabandhu Road, Shayesta Khan Road, Nawab Sirajuddaula Road, and the Dhaka-Narayanganj Old Road experiencing frequent jams. Several factors including ongoing roadwork, illegal parking, hawkers blocking footpaths, and illegal vehicle stands, contribute to the congestion. During a recent visit to the area, it was observed that renovation work is underway along Bangabandhu Road, with piles of gravel, soil, bricks, and stones blocking parts of the road. Govt intensifies efforts to improve Dhaka's traffic management As a result, one lane between Nitaiganj and Chashara is now unusable. At Rail Gate No. 2, traffic from Chashara is also being held up by ongoing construction, causing a queue that stretches back to Digubabur Bazar. Auto-rickshaws and human haulers have been going in the wrong direction from Narayanganj Club towards Rail Gate No. 2, picking up passengers and slowing down the already blocked traffic. Auto-rickshaw drivers said that rather than wait for long periods in traffic, they prefer to drive on the opposite side of the road, believing it will allow them to drop off passengers faster. Siam Ahmed, a government employee, said that the lack of following traffic laws is making the situation worse. He said that illegal parking and hawkers have already made it difficult to navigate the roads. The additional issue of vehicles travelling in the wrong direction is adding to the chaos, and the risk of accidents is increasing. He urged the police and local authorities to take strict action to restore order on roads. A local pedestrian, Rifat, mentioned that vehicles often drive the wrong way near Popular Diagnostic Center, Friends Market in Kalir Bazar, and Rail Gate No. 2, which leads to traffic jams and frequent quarrels between drivers. Delay in Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road expansion causes severe traffic disruptions Ruhul Amin Sagar, Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic), said that road renovation projects are causing some of the congestion. He said that renovation work is underway on various roads in the city. Drain renovation work is underway towards Rail Gate No. 2. Almost half of the road is occupied with soil, bricks, stones, and machinery, he added. He also noted that work by DPDC in Chashara has resulted in soil being dumped in the area, further restricting traffic. To address the issue, traffic police are conducting operations with the army, magistrates, and local authorities, issuing fines, making arrests, and taking action against violators. Despite these efforts, many drivers continue to disregard traffic laws. He mentioned that since August last year, many have been ignoring traffic rules and regulations, with cars that were previously prohibited from entering the city now being driven there. However, the officer remains hopeful that once the roadwork is completed, the situation will improve and road order will be restored.

Tall trees near Cox’s Bazar and Saidpur airports are causing turbulence during flight landings, said Novoair’s Chief of Safety Captain Ashfaq-Ur-Rahman Khan. He raised the issue during a workshop, titled “Aviation Infrastructure and Imperatives for Aviation Safety” jointly organised by Novoair Aviation and the Aviation and Tourism Journalists Forum (ATJFB) on Wednesday. Captain Ashfaq gave a presentation on various aspects of flight safety at the workshop. He mentioned that tall trees around the two airports are causing turbulence. While many assume the turbulence is due to pilot error, he clarified that it is a natural phenomenon. He further mentioned that a letter has already been sent to the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) regarding this issue. In his presentation, he also stressed the importance of runway surface levelness and the need for advanced navigation systems for flight safety. He detailed the complete set of regulations in place to ensure the safety of both flight crews and passengers. Flight operations suspension for 3.5hrs daily for 7 nights at Dhaka airport Addressing a question about flight safety from the journalists, Novoair’s Managing Director Mofizur Rahman spoke about the issues of bird strikes and laser lights near airports. “To prevent this, the airport authorities are taking various initiatives including using sound guns. However, various slaughterhouses, fish farming, etc., which are sources of bird food, must be stopped from the areas around the airport.” Furthermore, he discussed the issue of laser lights being aimed at pilots, a serious safety concern. At least 10 people were killed in eastern Congo by extremist rebels linked to the Islamic State group, a local official said Wednesday. The rebels with the Allied Democratic Forces, an IS affiliate in the region, attacked the village of Makoko in the Lubero territory of the North Kivu province on Wednesday, a provincial member of parliament, David Sikuli, told The Associated Press. “I call on the Congolese government to allow joint operations by Congo and Uganda's army to be expanded in all areas where the ADF are located,” Sikuli said. 78 dead at abandoned South Africa gold mine There were no Congolese soldiers in the village, only local fighters known as Wazalendo, who often fight alongside Congolese security forces, he added. Eastern Congo has struggled with armed violence for decades as more than 120 groups fight for power, land and valuable mineral resources, while others try to defend their communities. Some armed groups have been accused of mass killings. The violence has caused nearly 7 million people to flee their homes. It’s unclear how many ADF fighters are present in Congo but they are a significant presence in the region and regularly attack civilians. The group originated in the late 1990s in neighboring Uganda and became affiliated with ISIS in 2019. Muslims make up about 10% of the Congolese population, most of them in the east. Firefighters continue battling LA wildfires amid dangerous weather warning In recent years, attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces have intensified near Congo's border with Uganda and spread towards Goma, eastern Congo’s main city, as well as the neighboring Ituri province. Rights groups and the United Nations have accused the ADF of killing hundreds of people and abducting even more, including a significant number of children. The father of a local Jubo Dal leader died in gunfire at his residence in Rajshahi's Paba upazila early Wednesday. The deceased, Md Alauddin, 60, was the father of Salahuddin Mintu, a member of the convening committee of the Nowhata Municipality unit of Jubo Dal.  India’s BSF hands over detained Bangladeshi Mintu said that there had been a financial dispute between two groups in their area, and in an attempt to resolve the matter, both parties met at the Airport Police Station on Tuesday night. "One of the individuals involved was a follower of mine, and after the dispute was settled, he returned home. However, around 1:30 am, the house came under random gunfire. A bullet entered through the door and struck my father’s waist. He was immediately admitted to Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) Hospital," Mintu said. He said, "10-12 people came in front of the house. They were all drug peddlers. They opened fire." Two bodies recovered from Dakatia River in Chandpur Dr. Sankar K. Biswas, a medical officer and spokesperson for RMC, said that the bullet, which had lodged in Alauddin's waist, caused damage to his kidney. Despite efforts to remove the bullet during surgery, Alauddin succumbed to his injuries around 2:40 pm on Wednesday. Faruk Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rajshahi Airport Police Station, confirmed that the incident took place in the Shah Makhdum Police Station area, which is now investigating the case.

Indian Border Security Force (BSF) handed over a Bangladeshi national to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Wednesday, a day after he was detained from Beurjhari border area in Thakurgaon's Baliadangi upazila. Sheikh Alimur Rahman, 42, of Khulna was handed over to the BGB through a flag meeting around 6:30 pm, said Lt Col Tanvir Ahmed, commanding officer of BGB Battalion-50. Flag meeting held between BGB and BSF over Fencing at Naogaon border Earlier, a flag meeting was held between BGB and BSF members regarding the issue, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. On Tuesday night, BSF members detained Alimul Rahman about 300 yards inside Indian territory near pillar No. 380/4-S.

Three officials from the US and one from Hamas confirmed that a deal had been reached, while a senior Israeli official said details are still being ironed out. All three US officials requested anonymity to discuss the contours of the deal before the official announcement by mediators in Doha. Hamas accepts draft agreement for Gaza ceasefire, release of hostages President Joe Biden was preparing to address the breakthrough agreement later Thursday, officials said. Any agreement still needs to be approved by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Cabinet, but is expected to go into effect in the coming days. Rafiqul Amin, managing director of Destiny Multipurpose Co-Operative Society Ltd, has been freed from jail after 12 years. Rafiqul walked out of Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj at around 6:30 pm on Wednesday, said Deputy Inspector General (Dhaka Range) of Prisons Md Jahangir Kabir. Bench Officer Belal Hossain said that since Rafiqul Amin had served 12 years and three months in prison, the court ordered his release as soon as possible. He also confirmed that there are no other cases against him. A Dhaka court sentenced him and 18 others to 12 years of jail in a misappropriation case. Jasim Uddin Bhuiyan, Destiny Multipurpose Co-operative Society General Secretary Zakir Hossain and Member Abul Kalam Azad; Diamond Executives SM Ahsanul Kabir Biplob, Jobayer Sohel and Abdul Mannan; and Crown Executive Mosaddek Ali Khan. All the convicts except Rafiqul, his wife, and Mohammad Hossain were tried in absentia. The court issued arrest warrants for those who are absconding in the case.

The Electoral System Reform Commission has recommended re-election in a constituency if the voter turnout is less than 40 percent, introduction of “no vote” provision to stop unopposed election, and the elimination of electronic voting machines (EVMs). The reform commission also recommended barring political parties from maintaining associate bodies among students, teachers, and workers, as well as their foreign chapters. The Electoral System Reform Commission headed by Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar submitted its report to Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday. Other recommendations include defense division in the definition of law enforcement agencies for election time, prioritizing the Election Commission’s own officials in appointment as returning officers and assistant returning officers, and changing a provision for independent candidate to acquire support from 500 voters instead of submitting signatures of 1 percent of the voters. The reform commission suggested the Election Commission should be empowered to postpone or cancel elections and to conduct re-elections as well as entrusted with the sole responsibility of appointing the EC Secretary. The report said a provision can be introduced to seek the opinion of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court through the President for providing power to the Election Commission to postpone the elections for 90 days showing reasonable reasons in writing following a unanimous decision, if there is a risk that the democratic system, which is part of the basic structure of the Constitution of Bangladesh, might be damaged by controversial elections like those held in 2014, 2018 and 2024. 2024: A year of mass uprising that reshaped Bangladesh’s Election Commission The commission recommended limiting the term of the Prime Minister to a maximum of two terms for a person by amending the Constitution, disqualify a two-time elected Prime Minister for the post of President by amending the Constitution, making a provision to prevent the same person from simultaneously serving as party chief, Prime Minister, and Leader of Parliament. The report suggested creating a 100-seat upper house of parliament through constitutional amendment and increasing the number of seats in Parliament (lower house) from 300 to 400 with 100 reserved for women through a rotating election system for direct representation. The 100 upper house seats should be distributed proportionally based on the basis of the percentage of votes received by parties in the parliamentary elections. In case of the upper house election, it recommended a provision should be made for 50 percent of the seats obtained by each party to pick members from among the party members and the remaining 50 percent seats should be on a non-partisan basis to pick members from among civil society, academicians, scientists, activists, labor representatives, women’s rights activists, cultural personalities and marginalized communities through proportional election. But at least 30 percent of the party and non-party members should be from women, the body recommended. Election Commission ramps up preparations for national election   The electoral system reform commission recommended that if necessary, the caretaker government’s term could be fixed at four months to complete all national and local government elections during this term. The head and 20 other advisers of caretaker government can be finalized by a permanent “national constitutional council.” It also recommended the formation of a permanent local government commission, arrangement of local body elections before the national election and holding the local body elections in non-partisan manners. The commission placed some 150 reform recommendations under 18 chapters in its report.

The Police Reform Commission has recommended identifying and prosecuting police personnel responsible for the killing and injury of students and civilians during the July-August uprising, ensuring accountability through appropriate legal channels.  In a report addressing human rights concerns, the commission emphasised reforms to enhance transparency, accountability and public trust in policing.   Key recommendations include ensuring the presence of an executive magistrate, local government representative or dignitary during night-time house searches and strictly monitoring the registration of cases, First Information Reports (FIRs) and investigations by the circle officer or superintendent of police.   The report stressed that individuals not named in an FIR should only be arrested with a court order based on the case diary.  It further proposed that if a charge sheet is filed against a non-resident/dead/innocent citizen in a fake case, it will be mandatory to take disciplinary action against the concerned investigating officer. Interim Govt to hold all-party conference over July Proclamation tomorrow The commission also highlighted the need to eliminate the practice of filing cases against "unknown accused" and taking legal action against police officers who intentionally harass individuals. Additionally, no individual should be publicly presented to the media as a criminal until proven guilty through due process.   The Police Reforms Commission strongly recommended that the National Human Rights Commission be empowered to take all direct steps to investigate allegations of human rights violations by members of law enforcement agencies. If allegations of human rights violations arise involving law enforcement agencies, the head of the respective agency can independently initiate an investigation. The commission also proposed for a human rights cell for the concerned agency’s head office.  July mass killing trial could be completed before election: Asif Nazrul Besides, in case of violation of human rights by the police through violation of the constitution, various laws and High Court directives, a new helpline can be launched or such actions can be included in the service of emergency helpline (999), it mentioned. The commission advised formulating a protection law for victims and witnesses to foster people-friendly policing and enhance accountability. It also called for a re-evaluation of the necessity of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) by reviewing its history and allegations of human rights violations.  

Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday announced the formation of a "Charter of New Bangladesh" based on national unity through dialogues. "We want to prepare a charter of the mass uprising, which will be the charter of new Bangladesh. It will be based on unity. There will be elections; there will be all but we should not move from the charter," he said at an event at his office in the capital. Four commissions -- Constitutional Reform Commission, Electoral System Reform Commission, Police Administration Reform Commission and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Reform Commission-- submitted their reports to Chief Adviser at the event. Prof Yunus said the charter will be a national commitment, not any partisan commitment, while all parties will sign up on it. "It will be a charter of Bengali nation and we will move forward bearing it in our hearts," he added. Interim Govt to hold all-party conference over July Proclamation tomorrow Noting that the charter will be an important document, the chief adviser said the elections would be a part of the charter. The polls will be held based on unity, otherwise the charter will get lost. Describing the report submission ceremony as a historical moment, he said today's event will remain as a part of history. Mentioning that the nation reincarnated of ruins, the chief adviser said today's programme is an integral part of that history. "This is not isolated reports. The reports that we have taken up today are certainly a big exercise for our country. None will deny that," he added. "The vision of a new Bangladesh that we aspired to build rested on your shoulders (members of the commission). You have drafted the framework for those dreams, marking the beginning of a new chapter," Prof Yunus said pointing at the members of the reform commissions. In his concluding speech, the chief adviser stressed removing overlapping and repetitions in the reports of the reform commissions so that clear reports could be presented before the nation. Bangladesh's ties with major powers not govt-specific: Foreign Adviser Urging all to maintain the spirit of the July revolution, he said: "Our emergence was from it (mass uprising)...justification is that we are the part of it. We should not forget it." Prof Yunus underscored for the need for building the national unity to fulfill the aspirations and dreams of the country's people. The chiefs of the four reform commissions handed over their reports to the chief adviser.

The Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn) detained a man with 2,009 pieces of yaba tablets concealed inside his body on Wednesday evening. The detainee was identified as Md. Shah Alam Sheikh, 41. Ex-NBR member Matiur's wife sent to jail Acting on a tip-off, a team from the APBn conducted a drive in the northern area of the Balaka Building at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and detained him. During interrogation, he admitted that he was carrying the yaba tablets. Later, 2,009 pieces of yaba were recovered from inside the rectum of the detainee. He was transporting the yaba tablets on a domestic Bangladesh Airlines flight (BG-434) from Cox’s Bazar to Dhaka. ACC sues Shamim Osman, wife, brother-in-law A case was later filed against him under Section 36(1), Subsection 10(b) of the Narcotics Control Act 2018 at the Airport Police Station. Authorities said that Alam Sheikh has been involved in drug trafficking and sales for a long time.
