Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) on Thursday launched an Information Help Desk aimed at making capital market-related information more accessible and effective for investors and other stakeholders. The help desk was formally inaugurated by DSE Managing Director (acting) Mohammad Asadur Rahman at the exchange premises. “Infrastructure through the Information Help Desk will make the dissemination of capital market-related information easier and ensure quick and effective responses to various queries from investors and stakeholders. This will further enhance DSE’s service quality, making it more customer-friendly and transparent,” Asadur said. He expressed optimism that the initiative would play a significant role in boosting market participants’ confidence in the exchange. Investors and stakeholders can obtain capital market-related information by contacting the help desk at +88-02-41040189 and 09666-702070, he added. DSE Chief Technology Officer Dr Asifur Rahman, Chief Financial Officer Md Samiul Islam, Chief Regulatory Officer Md Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan, and other senior officials were present at the event.

As many as 483 people, including 64 women and 71 children, were killed and 1,317 others injured in 534 road accidents across the country in November, according to a report of Road Safety Foundation (RSF). Like October, Dhaka division recorded the highest number of accidents at 141, resulting in 119 deaths, the RSF report released on Thursday said. The report noted that the number of fatalities and accidents rose compared to October, increasing by 42 deaths and 48 accidents respectively. The RSF prepared the report based on the reports of nine national dailies, seven online news portals and electronic media. Among the deceased, 194 people died in 227 motorbike accidents, accounting for 40.16% of total fatalities and it is 57 fewer than in the previous month. The deceased also included 106 pedestrians, 57 drivers and their assistants. Besides, six waterways accidents claimed at least seven lives with five missing. Besides, 38 people were killed and nine others injured in 47 accidents involving trains across Bangladesh last month. RSF identifies 314 accident-prone upazilas across Bangladesh, 139 as highly risky Of the total accidents, 131 accidents occurred on the national highways, 245 on regional roads, 82 on rural roads and 71 on city roads, said the report. According to the report, 26.40% accidents occurred in Dhaka division, 16.10% in Rajshahi, 20.97% in Chattogram, 12.17% in Khulna, 6.36% in Barishal, 5.61% in Sylhet, 7.11% in Rangpur and 5.24% in Mymensingh division. Sylhet division saw 30 accidents with lowest 24 deaths during the same period, said the report. The RSF identified several key factors behind the rise in road accidents including faulty vehicles, reckless driving, drivers’ incompetence or illness, unsettled wages and working hours, low-speed traffic on highways, risky motorcycling by youth, frequent violation of traffic rules, poor traffic management, inefficiency of the BRTA, and extortion in the transport sector. The RSF urged the concerned authorities to take necessary measures to improve road safety across the country.

Trading at both the Dhaka and Chattogram stock exchanges began on a negative note on Thursday, with key indices falling in the first hour amid declines in most company prices. The benchmark DSEX at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) shed 17 points. The Shariah-based DSES fell by 5 points, while the blue-chip DS-30 index lost 8 points. Out of the traded issues, prices declined for 217 companies against gains for 81, while 86 remained unchanged. The turnover at the DSE crossed Tk 127 crore in shares and units during the first half of the session. Bangladesh stocks slide on week’s opening day at DSE, CSE The downtrend also persisted at the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), where the general index dropped by 44 points. At the CSE, prices advanced for 25 companies, declined for 43 and remained unchanged for 11 issues. The port city bourse recorded a turnover of Tk 2 crore in shares and units in the first half.

Another Bangladeshi peacekeeper has been injured in a drone attack by separatist forces in Sudan, raising the total number of wounded Bangladesh Army personnel serving in the UN mission to nine. According to a media release from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), eight Bangladeshi peacekeepers were initially injured when a United Nations mission camp in the Abeï area of Sudan came under a drone strike. Later, reports confirmed that another soldier was wounded in the attack, bringing the total number of injured to nine. The injured personnel are receiving treatment at Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. One of them has already been discharged, while the remaining peacekeepers are reported to be out of danger, the ISPR said. Bangladeshi peacekeepers killed in Sudan: Condolences keep pouring in from international community Meanwhile, the bodies of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers killed in the 13 December drone attack on the Kadugli logistics base under the UN mission will be sent to Dhaka on 20 December. State honours will be accorded during their funeral rites, added the release issued on Wednesday. The Bangladesh Army continues to closely monitor the situation to ensure the safety and welfare of its peacekeepers deployed in Sudan.

After assessing the security situation on Thursday morning, Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) in Dhaka is now operational and functioning as normal. "We do understand the difficulties faced by applicants," said an official.  Based on evolving security situation, there will be a reassessment on IVAC operations, the official said. Visa services at other IVACs in Bangladesh are also being reviewed in light of the prevailing security situations. Due to security situation, IVAC JFP Dhaka was closed at 2 PM on Wednesday, said a notification issued by the IVAC in Dhaka. Bangladesh rejects India’s advice; vows free, fair polls All applicants who have appointment slots booked for submission on Wednesday will be given a slot accordingly. The Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) at Jamuna Future Park (JFP) in Dhaka is the main, integrated centre for all Indian visa services in the capital.

A juice vendor was stabbed to death during an Islamic gathering organised by Darul Aman Trust in Pabna Sadar upazila on Wednesday. The victim was identified as Sujan Mollah, 17, son of Saiful Mollah of Titpulia villag under Sathia upazila.   Police, however, detained the suspect, identified as 20-year-old Md. Sohan, elder son of Sheikh Sharif from Mahendrapur area in the Sadar upazila. According to witnesses, Sohan visited a sharbat stall near the gathering around 9:30am. After drinking the juice, he delayed paying the shopkeeper leading to an argument between them. At one stage, the accused allegedly said, “You know me, so what will you do if I don’t pay?” The altercation escalated when Sohan suddenly stabbed the seller in multiple places, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to Pabna General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at 4:15pm on Wednesday. Officer-in-charge Md. Dulal Uddin of Pabna Sadar Police Station said a murder case has been filed in this connection. 

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB has arrested two people on charge of abducting a man and subsequently torturing in Sylhet. The abductors allegedly also stripped him and filmed before demanding the ransom. On Wednesday night, a RAB team arrested the suspects from the Barthkhala area under Dakshin Surma Police Station in Sylhet city; a media release sent from the RAB-9 shared this information on Wednesday night. The arrestees are Ahmed Hossain Mahin, 30, son of Nazmul Hossain of Barthkhala, and Suhel Ahmed, 24, son of Anwar Hossain of Halishar of Naria upazila under Shariatpur district. On 30 November, the victim, after attending a court hearing in Sylhet, was going to home in Kanaighat upazila by a bus. The kidnappers intercepted the moving bus near Kadamtoli Overbridge under Dakshin Surma Police Station and forcefully took him to a vehicle. The victim’s eyes were blindfolded, and his hands tied behind his back before being taken to an unknown location. There, he was stripped, physically tortured, and beaten. The accused then sent a video of the torture to the victim’s family, demanding a ransom of Tk 8 lakh. Later Tk 5 lakh and Tk 3 lakh were separately sent to the abductors. On 7 December evening, the victim was released in the Talatala area of Sylhet to his father and sister. The victim, a resident of Sonarkhejur area in Kanaighat upazila, filed a case with the police station concerned, naming the kidnappers.

Two people were killed and two others injured in a collision between two motorcycles in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet district on Wednesday night. The accident occurred around 11:30 pm at Termail on the Sylhet-Zakiganj road. The deceased were identified as Abdul Ahad, 42, and Sabbir Ahmad, 21, of Goashpur and Ranaping Chatrish villages respectively under the Golapganj upazila. The injured Ariful Haque Joy, 35, and Zakir Ahmad were undergoing treatment Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital. Officer-in-charge Md Ariful Islam of Golapganj Model Police Station said the speeding bikes collided in Termail area, leaving one dead on the spot and three others injured. The trio was rushed to Osmani Hospital where physicians declared another dead, he said, adding that the remaining duo was receiving treatment.

Dhaka, the overcrowded capital city of Bangladesh, has ranked 10th on the list of cities with the worst air quality with an AQI score of 166 at 9:50 am this morning (December 18, 2025). Today Dhaka’s air was classified as ‘unhealthy’ referring to a healthy threat, according to the AQI index. Such unhealthy air quality continued for the past few days. When the AQI value for particle pollution is between 50 and 100, air quality is considered ‘moderate’, usually sensitive individuals should consider limiting prolonged outdoor exertion, between 101 and 150, air quality is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, between 150 and 200 is ‘unhealthy’, between 201 and 300 is said to be 'very unhealthy', while a reading of 301+ is considered 'hazardous', posing serious health risks to residents. Egypt’s Cairo, Pakistan’s Lahore and India’s Delhi cities respectively occupied the first, second and third spots on the list, with AQI scores of 293, 284, and 280 respectively. The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is and what associated health effects might be a concern for them. Dhaka choked by ‘unhealthy’ air; ranks 10th worst globally The AQI in Bangladesh is based on five pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2, and ozone. Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution issues. Its air quality usually turns unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon. As per World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year, mainly due to increased mortality from stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Wednesday that he has approved a $35 billion natural gas export agreement with Egypt, marking the largest gas deal in Israel’s history. The 15-year deal could also help ease tensions between the two nations following the two-year war in the Gaza Strip. U.S. energy giant Chevron, a major stakeholder in Israel’s offshore gas fields in the Mediterranean, will deliver the gas. Approximately half of the revenue is expected to flow to Israel’s state treasury. In a recorded statement, Netanyahu said the deal “greatly strengthens Israel’s position as a regional energy power, and it contributes to stability in our region.” Egypt, which borders both Israel and Gaza and has played a key mediating role with Hamas ahead of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire in October, has not immediately confirmed the announcement. The agreement had faced earlier delays from Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen, who initially criticized its terms as unfavorable to Israel. Cohen joined Netanyahu at Wednesday’s announcement, expressing support for the finalized deal. Israel began exporting natural gas nearly a decade ago, initially to Jordan and later to Egypt, following the discovery of substantial offshore reserves in the early 2000s. The merger of five struggling Shariah-based banks into Sammilito Islami Bank PLC has yet to ease the financial strain on thousands of depositors, with a severe cash fund crisis persisting across branches. The consolidation, which combined Exim Bank, First Security Islami Bank, Global Islami Bank, Social Islami Bank, and Union Bank, was launched amid high public expectations. Yet depositors continue to struggle to access their savings, highlighting an ongoing liquidity crunch. Shobnam Begum, a retired Social Welfare Directorate officer, told UNB that she has been unable to withdraw her pension from Exim Bank’s Moghbazar branch for three months. “Despite repeated assurances from the branch manager, I was turned away again this week,” she said, underscoring the growing hardship faced by ordinary account holders. Another depositor at Social Islami Bank’s Panthapath branch described the ordeal as “an unprecedented example of bank looting,” after having to lobby persistently to access his own funds. Bank Merger: 'Sammilita Islami Bank' receives final approval Branches of the merged banks now operate in near silence, with many customers stopping visits altogether. Observers noted that at the Nayapaltan branch of Global Islami Bank, the only visitors were DPS depositors, reflecting a sharp drop in public trust. Government Funds Unclear Confusion surrounds the Tk 20,000 crore in government capital earmarked for the new bank. While some officials suggested the funds had been released, a First Security Islami Bank branch manager said they had yet to arrive at branch level. “We cannot process withdrawals without written instructions from the top,” the official said. Bangladesh Bank Executive Director Arif Hossain Khan added that no government money has officially been disbursed for core capital formation. A new AP-NORC poll shows that many Americans are comfortable giving cash or gift cards as holiday presents, while a sizable portion plan to be asleep before midnight on New Year’s Eve. About 6 in 10 adults consider cash or gift cards “very” acceptable as gifts, though fewer approve of secondhand or re-gifted items. Younger adults are more accepting of cash: roughly two-thirds of those under 45 say it is very acceptable, compared with 55% of those 45 and older. “Everything’s too expensive nowadays. Billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman was confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday as NASA administrator, ending a drawn-out saga in which President Donald Trump initially withdrew his nomination amid a public feud with tech mogul Elon Musk. Africa is bearing the brunt of the Trump administration’s newly expanded travel restrictions, yet reactions across the continent of 1.5 billion people were largely subdued Wednesday as governments assessed the impact and next steps. The updated measures, announced Tuesday, add 20 countries to the travel ban, making it broader and more punitive than restrictions during Trump’s first term, which mainly targeted Muslim-majority nations and were reversed in 2021. Of the five countries newly added to the full ban list, four are in Africa — Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and South Sudan, which already faced significant restrictions. Syria and holders of Palestinian Authority travel documents were also included. Other countries, including Sierra Leone and Laos, moved from partial to full restrictions. Twelve of the 15 countries under partial restrictions are African, including Angola, Benin, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The remaining partial restrictions apply to Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, and Tonga. The African Union urged the U.S. to implement border measures in a “balanced, evidence-based” manner, warning that the ban could harm educational, commercial, and diplomatic ties built over decades. Officials in affected nations expressed caution. Sierra Leone said it hoped to engage Washington for a review, while Mali’s foreign ministry described it as “too early to comment.” Analysts and citizens described the restrictions as unfair and likely to strain U.S.–Africa relations. “It paints all Nigerians with the same brush,” said Nigerian lawyer Ramlah Ibrahim Nok, highlighting concerns about educational, business, and tourism travel. Recent remarks by Indian officials have sparked frustration among residents who say the government is downplaying the severity of air pollution in the country’s capital. Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav recently told Parliament that New Delhi recorded 200 days of “good” air quality this year. Experts and opposition leaders criticized the figure, saying it ignored the city’s worst pollution months. Days later, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta suggested that air quality could be managed like a temperature reading by spraying water, prompting public jeers at a city event. Earlier this year, Gupta approved a controversial cloud seeding program intended to reduce pollution, despite limited evidence of its effectiveness. Residents say such comments highlight officials’ reluctance to address the city’s toxic smog. “Instead of doing cloud seeding, I hope the government will wake up and take some real action,” said 73-year-old resident Anita. Experts note that India’s air quality standards are less strict than those of the U.S. and the World Health Organization, and monitoring networks are too sparse to accurately capture local pollution levels. Japan recorded a 6% increase in exports in November from a year earlier, buoyed by a recovery in shipments to the United States, which rose for the first time since March after trade-related uncertainty eased following a tariff deal with the Trump administration. Preliminary figures released Wednesday showed imports edged up 1.3% year-on-year, resulting in a trade surplus of 322.2 billion yen (about $2.1 billion). Exports to the U.S. jumped nearly 9%, driven by stronger shipments of automobiles, chemicals and cameras, offsetting weaker demand for machinery and iron and steel. On the import side, purchases of U.S. oil almost tripled, while imports of grain and other food items also rose sharply. Under the tariff agreement with Washington, most Japanese goods face a baseline import duty of 15%, instead of the previously proposed 25%. That helped lift passenger vehicle exports by 8% in volume terms, though their total value increased just 1.5%, suggesting automakers absorbed much of the higher tariff costs rather than passing them on to buyers. Imports from the U.S. climbed more than 7%, yet Japan still posted a trade surplus with its largest trading partner of 739.8 billion yen ($4.7 billion), an 11% increase from a year earlier. Luxury car sales slide in China as economic slowdown hurts European automakers Exports to the European Union surged about 20%, supported by stronger demand for machinery, vehicles and other manufactured products. Attacks on hospitals and other medical facilities in conflict-ravaged Sudan have killed more than 1,600 people so far this year, the head of the World Health Organization said Wednesday, underscoring the scale of devastation caused by the war. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the agency has recorded 65 assaults on health centers since January, which have also left at least 276 people injured. The latest incident occurred Sunday, when a drone struck a military hospital in Diling, the capital of South Kordofan province — an area that has emerged as a major battleground between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). According to Tedros, the attack killed nine people and wounded 17. “Each attack further denies people access to health care and essential medicines,” he said in a post on X, adding that medical needs persist even as damaged facilities await repair and services struggle to resume. 34 dead, 80 injured as airstrike hits hospital in rebel-held Myanmar region The Sudan Doctors Network, a group of medical professionals monitoring the conflict, accused the RSF of carrying out the drone strike on the hospital in Diling. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said the casualties in Diling were part of a wider toll of at least 104 people killed in attacks across the Kordofan region since Dec. 4. Health facilities have increasingly been caught in the crossfire. In October, an RSF assault on the Saudi Hospital in the Darfur city of el-Fasher left at least 460 people dead, according to the WHO. The agency said armed fighters also abducted doctors and nurses during the attack. Amnesty International has demanded immediate release of journalist Anis Alamgir, who was arrested on December 15 under Bangladesh’s Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), describing the move as a misuse of counterterror laws to suppress freedom of expression. "The interim government must respect its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and immediately release Anis Alamgir," said Amnesty International’s South Asia Researcher Rehab Mahamoor on Wednesday. Responding to the arrest, she said it reflects an “alarming trend” of individuals being targeted for being perceived to support activities of the now-banned Awami League. “Rather than misusing anti-terror legislation to silence people expressing their views and opinions, the interim government and authorities should instead be facilitating freedom of expression and association, including in the lead up to elections,” Rehab Mahamoor said. She urged the interim government to uphold its international obligations. According to media reports, Alamgir was arrested following a complaint alleging that he and four others used social media and other media platforms to spread propaganda in favour of the Awami League. A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court later placed him on a five-day remand. During the court hearing, Alamgir reportedly defended his professional role, saying: “I am a journalist. I question those in power. I have been doing this for two decades. My job is not to bow to anyone.” The Anti-Terrorism Act was amended in May this year by the interim government to ban the activities of the Awami League. Since then, the law has reportedly been used against several individuals perceived to support AL including other journalists. Amnesty International warned that using terror legislation to curb freedom of expression and association violates international law, especially ahead of Bangladesh’s general election scheduled for February 2026. The rights group urged authorities to ensure a human rights–respecting environment regardless of political affiliation. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) called on Bangladeshi authorities to immediately drop terrorism charges against the veteran journalist, to release him unconditionally, and to stop targeting the media under national security laws. In a statement issued from New Delhi, CPJ said Alamgir was arrested and charged under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) for allegedly spreading propaganda through television talk shows and social media posts and conspiring to rehabilitate the semi-banned Awami League. “Using a counterterrorism law to detain a journalist months before a landmark election raises serious concerns about the interim government’s commitment to press freedom, a pillar of democracy,” said CPJ Asia-Pacific Program Coordinator Kunāl Majumder. He urged authorities to immediately release Alamgir and end the practice of prosecuting journalists for expressing views critical of the government. According to CPJ, police opened an investigation against Alamgir and three others on December 15. He was arrested a day earlier by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from a gym in the capital. A Dhaka magistrate later granted police a five-day remand to question him. CPJ noted that Alamgir, a former war correspondent who covered conflicts in Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003, has decades of experience in print and broadcast journalism. In recent years, he has been a regular commentator on national politics, security issues and media freedom. Bangladesh’s next general election is scheduled for February 12. CPJ warned that, if convicted under the ATA, Alamgir could face life imprisonment and a heavy fine. The watchdog also reported a sharp rise in attacks on journalists in Bangladesh, including at least 17 assaults in February 2025 alone, alongside multiple arrests under security-related laws. Dhaka Metropolitan Police did not immediately respond to CPJ’s request for comment.

Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Bangladesh Park Young-sik on Wednesday paid a farewell call on Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and said Korean electronics giant Samsung, is now keen to expand its operations in Bangladesh, including scaling up mobile phone production in the country. He said the two countries expect to hold a new round of negotiations on a planned Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in February, which would pave the way for duty-free access for Bangladeshi goods—particularly ready-made garments—to the South Korean market, one of the world’s largest economies. The meeting was held at the State Guest House Jamuna on Wednesday, marking the completion of his diplomatic tenure in Bangladesh. During the meeting, Ambassador Park expressed his condolences and “deep sorrow” over the deaths of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers who were killed in a recent drone attack on a United Nations peacekeeping base in the Abyei area of Sudan, said the Chief Adviser’s press wing. The ambassador also conveyed his best wishes for Bangladesh’s democratic transition, expressing hope that the country would hold a free, fair, and peaceful election on February 12. Both sides discussed ways to further strengthen Bangladesh–South Korea relations, including attracting greater Korean investment in Bangladesh, the status of a planned comprehensive economic agreement, investment in human capital, and the expansion of cultural exchanges between the two friendly nations. Chief Adviser Prof Yunus congratulated Ambassador Park on the successful completion of his tenure and thanked him for his contributions to deepening bilateral relations. Prof Yunus said Bangladesh has undertaken a series of reforms to attract foreign direct investment in the country. He noted that the interim government has resolved a long-standing issue related to the Korean Export Processing Zone in Chattogram, expressing hope that this would attract leading South Korean companies to Bangladesh. The ambassador noted that Bangladeshi garments currently account for less than five percent of clothing imports into South Korea, a market dominated by exports from Vietnam and Indonesia. He said goods from the two South East nations enjoy duty free market access to Korea through bilateral and multilateral free trade arrangements. Recalling the deep cultural and people-to-people ties between the two nations, the Chief Adviser suggested that South Korea consider establishing more training centres, particularly language institutes, to enhance the skills and employability of Bangladeshi youth. SDGs Affairs Principal Coordinator and Senior Secretary Lamiya Morshed was also present during the meeting.

The cost of a government project for strengthening the production, storage and distribution of quality seed potatoes has increased sharply due to repeated delays in implementation. With the latest revision, the total estimated cost has risen to Tk 1,138.74 crore from the originally approved Tk 688.21 crore, according to official documents. The project, titled “Strengthening Production, Preservation and Farmer-Level Distribution of Quality Seed Potato,” has undergone its second revision. Alongside the cost escalation, the completion deadline has been extended by another two years. The Ministry of Agriculture is the sponsoring ministry, while the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation is implementing the project. The project cost was first revised to Tk 727.43 crore. Continued delays caused by extended construction schedules, additional infrastructure needs and higher operational expenses have pushed the proposed budget much higher, said officials. Most of the revised cost will be financed by government funds with a smaller share will come from the BADC’s own resources. The implementation period initially ran from September 2019 to June 2024. It was later extended to June 2025 and has now been further prolonged until June 2027. Officials involved in the project said the extended timeline has directly contributed to higher spending, particularly on cold storage construction, mechanisation, energy supply, farm-level seed production and transport-related costs. One of the main reasons for the latest revision is the decision to construct additional cold storage facilities to meet the government’s target of distributing 60,000 tonnes of seed potatoes to farmers by 2030. Existing and ongoing facilities under BADC are expected to provide storage capacity of just over 53,000 tonnes. To address the shortfall, four additional cold storages will be built. The project covers selected districts and upazilas in eight divisions. Its objectives include expanding the availability of disease-free, high-quality seed potatoes, increasing modern storage capacity and improving farmers’ skills through training and demonstrations. Despite the rising cost, the Planning Commission has viewed the revised project positively. By June 2025, financial progress had reached nearly 88 percent, while physical progress stood at around 95 percent. The commission said at successful completion of the project would help boost potato production, strengthen modern and sustainable storage systems and contribute to national food security. Officials added that the revised timeline is necessary to ensure proper completion of newly added infrastructure, including cold storages in northern and central districts, renovation of older facilities and the introduction of solar power in selected storage units. They said that without the extension, the intended benefits of the expanded investment would be difficult to achieve. The project is expected to generate broader economic and social benefits by improving seed quality, stabilising yields, creating rural employment and increasing farmers’ access to improved potato varieties. Potatoes are Bangladesh’s top vegetable crop and a key staple for food security. This year’s production reached a record 1.12 crore metric tonnes, surpassing national demand by around 22 lakh metric tonnes. Cultivated area expanded by 8 percent year on year to 4.92 lakh hectares in fiscal year 2024–25, while total output rose 9 percent from 1.06 crore tonnes a year earlier, according to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.

Israel’s military said on Wednesday that its troops fired a mortar shell into a Palestinian residential area in the Gaza Strip, wounding at least 10 people, in the latest incident to strain the fragile ceasefire with Hamas. According to the Israeli army, the mortar was fired during an operation near the so-called “Yellow Line,” a demarcation drawn under the ceasefire agreement that separates Israeli-held areas of Gaza from the rest of the territory. The military said the shell deviated from its intended target, which was not specified, and added that an investigation into the incident was underway. Fadel Naeem, director of Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City, said the hospital received at least 10 wounded people following the strike. This was not the first incident since the ceasefire took effect on Oct. 10 in which Israeli fire has caused Palestinian casualties outside the Yellow Line. Palestinian health officials say more than 370 people have been killed by Israeli fire since the truce began. Israel maintains that its forces have responded to violations by Hamas and claims that most of those killed were militants. However, an Israeli military official, speaking on condition of anonymity under military rules, acknowledged that the army is aware of several incidents in which civilians were killed, including young children and a family traveling in a van. Palestinians say civilian deaths have occurred partly because the Yellow Line is not clearly marked in many areas. While Israeli troops have been placing yellow blocks to delineate the line, residents say the markers are still missing in several locations. Meanwhile, the Israel-Hamas ceasefire is facing difficulties as both sides accuse each other of repeated violations. The first phase of the truce involved the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners. The next phase is expected to include the deployment of an international stabilization force, the establishment of a technocratic governing body for Gaza, the disarmament of Hamas and further Israeli troop withdrawals. Israel has said it will not move to the second phase until the remains of hostage Ran Gvili, still believed to be in Gaza, are returned. Hamas, on the other hand, is urging increased international pressure on Israel to open key border crossings, halt deadly strikes and allow more humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.

Momena Khatun, the mother of Masumur Rahman Khalili, Executive Editor of the Daily Naya Diganta, member of the National Press Club Management Committee passed away on Wednesday afternoon. She breathed her last at Highcare Hospital in Sector 7, Uttara, Dhaka, due to age-related complications. She was 90 years old. The deceased leaves behind three sons, five daughters, and a host of relatives to mourn her loss. Her sons hold prominent positions in various sectors: Elder son Mahfuzur Rahman Khalili, a Chartered Accountant residing in Canada, second son Mamunur Rahman Khalili, a retired Additional Secretary, currently serving as the Treasurer of the Islamic Arabic University in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, third son Masumur Rahman Khalili, the Executive Editor of the Daily Naya Diganta. Following her passing on Wednesday, her body was transported to her ancestral home in Rampur village under Satkania Upazila in Chattogram. Her funeral prayer (Janaza) is scheduled to be held today, Thursday, after the Isha prayer, followed by her burial at the local family graveyard.

The Amar Ekushey Book Fair-2026 will begin on February 20 and continue until March 15, Bangla Academy authorities announced on Wednesday. The inaugural ceremony of the country’s largest annual book fair will be held at 11:00am, according to a press release. The decision was finalised at an emergency meeting held at Bangla Academy on Wednesday afternoon. Bangla Academy Director General Professor Mohammad Azam, Cultural Affairs Ministry Secretary Md Mofidur Rahman, Dhaka University Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, representatives of publishing houses and members of law enforcement agencies attended the meeting. Earlier, authorities had announced that the 2026 edition of the Amar Ekushey Book Fair would be held from December 17 this year to January 17, 2026. However, on September 21, the Home Ministry decided that the book fair should be organised after the upcoming national parliamentary election, scheduled for February 12. Following the decision, the December schedule was suspended. Meanwhile, writers, poets, publishers and cultural activists had been demanding that the fair be held in February, the month deeply associated with the memories of the historic Language Movement. Amid the evolving situation, a final decision was taken on November 2, after the national election schedule, to organise the Amar Ekushey Book Fair-2026 in February.

Nearly two-thirds of child labourers in Bangladesh are employed in industrial and factory settings, exposing them to serious health and safety risks, a report said on Wednesday. The findings were presented at an event in Dhaka jointly organised by the International Organisation Educo Bangladesh and the Child Labour Elimination Platform (CLAP).  Economist Dr Khondaker Golam Moazzem presented the policy recommendations, while Educo Bangladesh Country Manager Afzal Kabir Khan chaired the session. Speakers at the event stressed the need to strengthen social protection measures to prevent child labour and provide adequate support to affected families. The report revealed that 66.6 percent of child labourers are engaged in the industrial sector, while 44.4 percent work in services and 38.8 percent in agriculture. Many of these children are exposed to hazardous conditions that pose serious threats to their physical and mental wellbeing. According to the data, hazardous child labour is most prevalent in the industrial sector, accounting for 54.7 percent of cases. The service sector follows with 29.9 percent, while agriculture accounts for the lowest share at 3.3 percent of children engaged in dangerous work. Dr Moazzem said that despite international commitments, existing laws and social protection mechanisms, millions of children remain engaged in labour, particularly in the informal sector. He mentioned that around 3.5 million children are involved in various forms of work, but official data is available for only 1.7 million of them. Of this number, about 100,000 children are engaged in hazardous occupations. He said child labour is more visible in urban areas due to the availability of diverse job opportunities, but rural child labour remains significant, particularly in agriculture and seasonal work. To address the problem effectively, he recommended increasing budgetary allocations to social protection programmes and expanding their coverage to reach vulnerable families. Md Kamal Uddin Biswas, additional secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare, said the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) explicitly call for ending child labour, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence against children. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving the SDG targets. He added that several initiatives, projects and programmes have already been undertaken by different ministries and departments to eliminate child labour. The government, he said, would take steps to implement recommendations aimed at bringing out-of-school children under social protection schemes and increasing allocations in this sector. Associate Professor Md Aurangzeb Akand of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University stressed the need for universal child benefits and adequate social protection systems. He called for increased investment in quality education and urged authorities to bring all out-of-school children back into classrooms. He also emphasised greater spending on child protection, agricultural development, rural public services, infrastructure and livelihoods. Afzal Kabir Khan said that eliminating child labour requires a robust and inclusive social protection system. He underscored the importance of reducing gaps in coverage, expanding social safety net programmes and strengthening support for the families of child labourers to address the root causes of the problem.

Students at Islamic University staged a symbolic protest on the campus in Kushtia on Wednesday, calling for justice in the murder of Sajid Abdullah, a student of the Al-Quran and Islamic Studies department. Protesters carried a red shroud representing his body to dramatise their demand for accountability. The protest began around 1:00 pm in front of the university’s administrative building, where students laid a blood-stained shroud at the main gate, partially blocking the pathway with ropes. They also displayed banners reading, 'Running the administrative building while bearing responsibility for Sajid’s murder.' Red markings spelling 'corpse' and simulated blood stains were scattered around the shroud to dramatize their demand for justice. Students said the protest was meant to hold university authorities accountable. 'There is no excuse to evade responsibility. We will continue demanding justice for Sajid Abdullah until it is delivered,' they said. They added that if the administration fails to act, students will take it upon themselves to identify the perpetrators, vowing to maintain their movement until justice is ensured. Leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Shibir, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and the Islamic Student Movement were present on the occasion.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested 392 people in 24 hours under Operation Devil Hunt Phase-2 from 1 am to 11.59 pm on Tuesday (December 16) at various locations in the capital. Among those arrested were 15 active leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, along with 377 individuals wanted in various cases or held on existing warrants with warrants, said Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of DMP. The operation was carried out as part of the ongoing efforts to maintain normal law and order in the capital. In addition, special checkposts were set up at eleven entry and exit points of the capital from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm on Wednesday (December 17) to search suspicious vehicles and ensure public safety. During this operation, 769 vehicles were searched and five people were arrested. The DMP’s ongoing operation will continue to ensure law and order in the capital, DC Talebur added.    

Civil society, political leaders, and researchers expressed deep concern Wednesday over the deterioration of public safety and the weakness of the judicial system in Bangladesh. At a dialogue titled “Security and Rights: What We Want, What We Get?” organized by Democracy International, speakers stressed that ensuring citizens’ safety and rights cannot rely on a single party. They called for national unity, political accountability, and effective institutional reforms. Catherine Cecil, Chief of Party at Democracy International, cited a survey conducted from November 5–30, before the shooting of Osman Hadi, showing 92.3% of respondents would not vote for any party or candidate involved in violent acts. About half believed political parties are failing to curb violence and establish peace. Other speakers highlighted the human impact of political violence, weak law enforcement, and the need for impartial governance. Police have taken special security measures ahead of the twin celebrations for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. A meeting on security and law and order was held at the Hall of Pride of Police Headquarters on Wednesday (December 17, 2025), chaired by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Bangladesh Baharul Alam, ahead of the Christmas celebration on December 25 and the New Year’s Eve on December 31. Welcoming leaders of the Christian community, the IGP said Christmas is a universal festival and emphasized that the police would remain alert throughout the celebrations. He expressed hope that, with the capabilities of the Bangladesh Police, both Christmas and New Year’s Eve would be celebrated in a peaceful environment. Authorities warned that any individual or group attempting to disrupt communal harmony by posting misleading content, comments, or images on social media during the festive period would face immediate legal action. Security will also be heightened in all tourist areas, including Cox’s Bazar and Kuakata, during the New Year’s Eve celebrations. Authorities said action would be taken against anyone who honks loudly or drives recklessly on the roads. People are urged to contact the National Emergency Service 999 or their nearest beat police officer in case of any emergency. During the meeting, Christian community leaders expressed satisfaction with the security measures and thanked the police administration. They expressed hope that, with everyone’s cooperation, Christmas would be celebrated in a festive atmosphere while maintaining religious solemnity, as in previous years. The distribution of nomination forms for the 13th national parliamentary election is ongoing across the country. On the sixth day of distribution, Jamaat candidates collected a total of 57 nomination forms over the past two days, Monday (December 15) and Wednesday (December 17). Mujibul Alam, Senior Assistant of Jamaat’s Central Publicity Department, confirmed the figures, noting that 6 forms were collected on December 15 and 51 on December 17. According to the official schedule, nomination forms have been distributed to candidates since Saturday, December 13. Candidates must submit their completed forms along with a BDT 50,000 deposit by December 29. Returning and assistant returning officers’ offices will remain open even on weekly and public holidays to ensure uninterrupted electoral processes. Earlier today, Abdus Sattar Sumon, Assistant Publicity Secretary of Jamaat’s Dhaka Metropolitan South, said four party-nominated candidates had already collected their forms. Three collected theirs from the Divisional Commissioner’s (Regional Election Office) office in Dhaka, while one collected the form from a district returning officer’s office outside the capital. The candidates are: Dr. Helal Uddin, central council member and Naib Ameer of Dhaka Metropolitan South, from Dhaka-8; Mohammad Kamal Hossain, central Majlis-e-Shura member and assistant secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan South, from Dhaka-5; Syed Zainul Abedin, Dhaka Metropolitan South council member, from Dhaka-4; and Md. Nurul Islam Bulbul, central executive council member and Ameer of Dhaka Metropolitan South, from Chapainawabganj-3 (Sadar).

The government has decided to amend several provisions of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012 to make the recovery of money and assets siphoned off abroad more efficient and effective. The decision was taken at the 30th meeting of the National Coordination Committee on the Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing, held on Wednesday, with Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed in the chair. The meeting reviewed overall policy directions, strategic guidelines and implementation measures aimed at strengthening Bangladesh’s framework for preventing money laundering and terrorist financing. In this context, members agreed that certain sections of the existing law need to be updated in line with evolving challenges and international best practices, particularly to facilitate faster tracing, attachment and recovery of illicitly transferred assets from overseas jurisdictions. The committee discussed in detail the progress of joint enquiry and investigation teams formed to handle 11 priority cases identified for the recovery of laundered money and assets abroad. Officials informed the meeting that, so far, 104 cases have been filed in connection with these priority cases, charge sheets have been submitted in 14 cases and courts have already delivered verdicts in four cases. The meeting was also apprised of the scale of assets attached and frozen as part of the ongoing recovery drive. According to the figures presented, immovable and movable properties worth Tk 55,638 crore have been attached and frozen within the country, while assets worth Tk 10,508 crore have been attached and frozen abroad. In total, assets amounting to Tk 66,146 crore have been brought under attachment and freezing measures. In addition, 21 Mutual Legal Assistance Requests (MLARs) related to the 11 priority cases have already been sent to the concerned countries to facilitate cooperation in investigation, evidence collection and asset recovery. Stressing the need for momentum, the chair directed the relevant authorities to expedite the submission of charge sheets, send MLARs to foreign jurisdictions without delay and take effective steps to ensure swift disposal of cases under the priority list. The meeting also focused on Bangladesh’s preparedness for the upcoming fourth-round Mutual Evaluation by the Asia/Pacific Group on Money Laundering (APG), scheduled for the 2027–28 cycle. Emphasising that the mutual evaluation is a matter of the highest importance for the country, the committee instructed all concerned ministries, divisions and agencies to take necessary and timely preparations to ensure full compliance with international standards on anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing. Among those present at the meeting were the Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission, the Principal Secretary to the Chief Adviser, the Governor of Bangladesh Bank, the Finance Secretary, the Secretary of the Financial Institutions Division, the Chairman of the National Board of Revenue, the Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, the Secretary of the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division, the Chairman of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission, the Secretary (Bilateral) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Additional Attorney General, the Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and representatives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Bangladesh Police and the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU).

BNP is facing an uphill task to reach an amicable understanding with its political allies and calm their anger over seat sharing after announcing its own candidates in 272 constituencies in two phases ahead of the 13th parliamentary election. Talking to UNB, some BNP and alliance leaders said several allied parties became upset as they expected more seats than BNP offered them, while some others became angry after getting only promises of future evaluation without any seat. BNP leaders, however, said they have continued talks to reach a compromise on seat-sharing and keep the alliance united. On Wednesday, BNP held separate meetings in Dhaka with two alliance platforms involved in the anti-fascist joint movement – Jatiyatabadi Samamona Jote and the 12-Party Alliance. He said some seats where BNP has already announced its candidates may be reconsidered for allies. The BNP leader, however, said they made it clear that due to strategy it will not be possible to leave all demanded seats for partners. In that case, he said, they assured allies that if the party forms the next government, their leaders will be given important posts in the Upper House of Parliament or in different state institutions. BNP leaders said they are determined to keep the alliance united logically and responsibly. “We are trying to reach an understanding with the allies by providing them with a logical number of seats.” Read more: Concerns grow over ‘administrative preparations’ for Bangladesh election So far, BNP has declared candidates in 272 seats, leaving 28 seats vacant, and the party has said the remaining seats are mainly for its allies. But alliance leaders claimed that they submitted their candidate lists as BNP requested, yet BNP announced its nominees without discussion. Top leaders from several small alliance parties who were seeking nominations in at least six constituencies were not considered, as BNP announced its own candidates there. On 10 December, 29 allied parties, including Ganatantra Mancha, the 12-Party Alliance, the Jatiyatabadi Samamona Jote, Gono Odhikar Parishad and Gonoforum, met at Shishu Kallyan Parishad to decide their next steps and demanded that BNP clarify its seat-sharing policy. Following that pressure, BNP on Wednesday met the two allies separately to calm frustrations. The first meeting took place between 12pm and 1pm with the Jatiyatabadi Samamona Jote at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office. He said they told BNP that they had stayed with the party in the joint movement and would continue to support the party to ensure victory for the ‘sheaf of paddy’, BNP’s election symbol. The alliance leader said they requested BNP to reconsider the Narail-2 constituency for their chief Dr Farhad, who contested the seat in the 2018 election. He said Mirza Fakhrul told the meeting that BNP was seriously considering reviewing the Narail-2 seat. “It would not be possible to give seats to all alliance partners due to strategic reasons, but those who do not receive seats will be honoured later based on merit if BNP forms the government,” he quoted Fakhrul as saying. After the meeting, Dr Farhad told UNB that the talks were “positive” and expressed confidence in BNP’s leadership. Two of the seats already have BNP candidates, while Pirojpur-1 remains vacant. A leader of the 12-Party Alliance said BNP leaders assured them that their demands would be given serious consideration. Contacted, BNP Standing Committee member Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku said they are in talks with alliance partners to reach an understanding over the seat-sharing issue. He, however, said it may not be possible to satisfy every partner by giving them seats, as winning the election must remain the priority. “So, we consider sharing seats only with those who have the potential to win.” Tuku said BNP has finalised its candidates after careful assessment of many factors. “We have still kept 28 seats vacant and many of those will be shared with our alliance partners. Effective implementation of the ‘One Health’ approach requires coordinated commitment at the highest level among the ministries of Health and Family Welfare, Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and Fisheries and Livestock, Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter said on Wednesday. “One Health is not just a subject for speeches. It demands real commitment, policy-level decisions and a collective mindset to work together. The era of fragmented efforts is over; now we need a ‘whole-of-government’ and ‘whole-of-nation’ approach,” she said while chairing a seminar titled ‘One Health Activities: Opportunities, Challenges and Future Strategies’, organised by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock at a city hotel. The adviser said human health, animal health and the environment are deeply interconnected, and only through their integration can One Health be implemented in its true sense. She noted that while humans are victims of diseases, they are often also responsible for their spread. Unsafe food, environmental pollution, excessive use of antibiotics and unplanned urbanisation are increasing health risks, which must be addressed by prioritising preventive and primary healthcare. Farida Akhter said climate change, genetic diseases, food security and public health issues are closely linked. In this context, a decision has been taken to implement the proposed One Health initiative through a single DPP involving all three ministries, with three project directors to ensure active participation from each sector. Expressing optimism, she said Bangladesh would successfully implement the One Health initiative by considering human health, livestock, fisheries and the environment together, setting an effective example for others. Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said development planning must place environment, biodiversity and public health at its core, stressing the need for integrated and forward-looking decisions. She said while roads or infrastructure can be built, natural assets such as the Sundarbans or rivers cannot be recreated once destroyed. Climate change, pandemics and environmental crises repeatedly remind us that every element of nature is deeply interconnected, and humans are not owners of nature but an inseparable part of it. The environment adviser also pointed out that procedural complexities, weak inter-ministerial coordination and delays in decision-making are major obstacles to implementing One Health activities. To overcome these challenges, she stressed the need for effective advisory committees at national and district levels, along with clearly defined focal points in each ministry. Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on Health and Family Welfare Prof Dr Md Sayedur Rahman said human health must remain at the centre of the One Health concept. He said the importance of fish, livestock and environmental health ultimately lies in their impact on human health, food security and livelihoods, as food contamination, unsafe animal feed and environmental changes eventually affect people. Describing the proposed One Health project as an ‘eye-opening’ initiative for Bangladesh, the special assistant said its goal is to build the capacity to detect health risks early and respond in a timely manner by viewing humans, animals and nature through a single lens.

The brutal murder of a mother and her teenage daughter in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur has taken a grim turn with the housemaid at the centre of the case giving a confessional statement before a court. Housemaid Ayesha Akhter, arrested in connection with the killing of Layla Afroz, 48, and her daughter Nafisa Binte Aziz, 15, confessed to her involvement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) on Wednesday. The statement was recorded by Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam after the completion of Ayesha’s six-day remand. She was subsequently sent to jail. Earlier, on Monday, Ayesha’s husband Rabbi had also made a confessional statement before a magistrate. His statement was recorded by Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain, further tightening the net around the accused couple. The crime sent shockwaves through the capital after the bodies of Layla Afroz and her school-going daughter were discovered at their Mohammadpur residence. Layla’s husband, AZM Azizul Islam, a schoolteacher, found the bodies after returning home and immediately alerted the authorities. Later that night, he filed a murder case with Mohammadpur Police Station. Investigators revealed that Ayesha had been employed at the flat for only four days before the killings. Despite the brief tenure, her behaviour soon drew suspicion. CCTV footage from the apartment complex showed her leaving the building wearing Nafisa’s school uniform and a face mask, a detail that became a crucial breakthrough in the investigation. Following the trail, police arrested Ayesha on December 10 during a drive in Nalchiti upazila of Jhalakathi, where she had gone into hiding. Her husband Rabbi was arrested alongside her from his grandmother’s house. The case has raised serious concerns over domestic security and the vulnerability of households, particularly in urban settings where domestic help is often hired on short notice and with limited background verification. With both accused now behind bars and confessional statements on record, the investigation is moving into its next phase as law-enforcers work to piece together the full sequence of events behind one of the most disturbing crimes in recent memory.

Emphasising individual freedom in the electoral process, Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Wednesday said that taking part in the election is a matter of personal choice for each candidate. The adviser made the remarks in response to questions at the BKMEA office in Narayanganj about the withdrawal of Narayanganj-5 BNP-nominated candidate Masuduzzaman Masud, who cited security concerns. “Security is a big word. You all are coming here today. You could have said we have a security crisis, and none of us will come. It is everyone’s personal matter. Why he won’t contest the election — maybe investigative journalists can find out,” he added. At a press conference held at the Narayanganj Press Club on Tuesday, Masuduzzaman Masud announced his withdrawal from the election race, citing security concerns raised by his family in the wake of the assassination attempt on Osman Hadi in Dhaka among his reasons. When asked about India’s visa application center being closed over security issues and the Indian Ministry of External Affairs summoned the Bangladesh High Commissioner in New Delhi, Jahangir Alam said, “We also summoned them a few days ago. Usually, in foreign affairs, if one person summons, the other also does. This is standard practice.” The Home Affairs Adviser also sought prayers for bullet-hit Sharif Osman Hadi, saying, “Inquilab Moncho’s Osman Hadi is undergoing treatment in Singapore. Pray for him, may he recover and return to us. He is a July warrior, and his contributions to the country are immense.” On behalf of BKMEA, six vehicles — three each — were gifted to the District Police and Industrial Police during the event. Students Against Discrimination Movement on Wednesday demanded that candidates who contested the 2024 general election be barred from contesting the upcoming 13th parliamentary election, arguing that their participation would undermine electoral fairness and reform efforts. “We asked the Election Commission to take measures so that the candidates who contested in the ‘ami-dumi election in 2024 can't participate in the upcoming election… We submitted a legal notice to the EC in this regard,” said the student platform president Rifat Rashid. He was talking to reporters after a meeting between a four-member delegation of the student platform that led the 2024 July Mass Uprising and Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the latter's office in the city’s Nirbachan Bhaban. Rifat said if the candidates of the 2024 election are allowed to run in the February election, they would take the issue to the court and simultaneously take to the streets to wage movement protesting their participation in the polls. “As the people of Bangladesh rejected the 2024 candidates, they should be kept out of the upcoming election.” About the current electoral atmosphere, he said, “The election environment and law and order situation are not satisfactory. Those who participated in the July Movement are facing threats to their lives. Fugitives are plotting killings from abroad.” Chief Coordinator of the student platform Hasib Al Imran said that although some candidates outside the Awami League became MPs in the 2024 election, they supported what he alleged to be mass killings during the July Movement. “So, anyone who contested that dummy election should not be allowed to take part in the 2026 election. To ensure this, we have served a legal notice so that they cannot participate in the election under any circumstances,” he said. The EC on December 11 last announced the schedule to arrange the 13th parliamentary election and the referendum on the July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Implementation Order simultaneously on February 12 next. According to the election schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination paper is December 29, while the scrutiny of nomination paper is on December 30-January 4 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is January 20. The election campaign will start on January 22 and continue till 48 hours before the balloting period (7:30am on February 10).

Bangladesh’s capital market failed to recover from the ongoing downturn as indices at both the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) declined for another day. At the close of trading, the DSE’s benchmark index DSEX shed 36 points. The Shariah-based DSES and the blue-chip DS30 index also fell by 7 points each. Most of the traded companies ended in the red, with prices falling for 299 companies, while 48 advanced and 43 remained unchanged. In the block market, shares worth Tk 22 crore of 24 companies were traded, with Fine Foods topping the list by trading shares worth Tk 9 crore. The turnover at the DSE declined to Tk 375 crore, down from Tk 413 crore in the previous session. Dominage Steel Building Systems Limited topped the gainers’ chart, rising more than 5 percent, while AFC Agro Biotech Ltd suffered the highest loss, shedding over 9 percent. The CSE mirrored the DSE’s performance as its overall index CASPI dropped 76 points. DSEX falls, CSE gains in Bangladesh capital market Of the traded issues, prices fell for 103 companies, rose for 41, and remained unchanged for 16. The turnover at the port city bourse edged up slightly to Tk 5.8 crore, compared to Tk 5.1 crore a day earlier. EXIM Bank 1st Mutual Fund topped the gainers at the CSE with a 10 percent rise, while Pacific Denims Limited ended at the bottom, losing 10 percent.  

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman left Dhaka for the United Kingdom on Wednesday to attend a series of scheduled meetings and programmes with a delegation of the British government. He departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the morning on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight, said Jamaat Assistant Secretary General and head of its media wing Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair. Bangladesh Bank has issued a new set of guidelines regarding the exchange of damaged, torn, or defective currency notes. Under the new policy, customers will receive the full face value of a note if more than 90 percent of it is intact. Any branch of any bank in the country is now mandated to provide this exchange service. The move comes as the central bank recently ceased its direct note-exchange services, shifting the responsibility to commercial bank branches to ensure public convenience. Customers will receive the full exchange value immediately from any bank branch. If less than 90 percent is found intact, the exchange value will not be paid instantly. Customers must submit an application through the bank branch. The central bank will review the claim and decide on the refund amount within a maximum of 8 weeks. Burnt Notes: Commercial banks are not authorized to process burnt notes. Customers must apply directly to any office of Bangladesh Bank for a decision after a thorough verification. Dirty Notes: Extremely soiled or dirty notes are classified as "Claimable" and will follow the application process rather than instant refund. Mandatory Service for All Bank Branches: The central bank has warned that every branch of every bank must provide services for non-reissuable, torn, or defective notes. Each branch must display a visible notice stating that "Exchange services for torn/defective and claimable notes are provided here." Bangladesh Bank stated that disciplinary action will be taken against any bank branch that shows reluctance or refuses to provide this service. Bangladesh Bank allows entrepreneurs to Import Capital Machinery without BIDA’s approval The new guidelines, which follow the "Note Refund Regulations" issued recently, categorize currency into five types, such as reissuable-fit for circulation, non-reissuable- unfit for further circulation but exchangeable, mutilated or defective-torn or damaged, claimable-notes with 90 percent or less remaining or excessively soiled, burnt notes-specifically handled by the central bank. Warning Against Fraud: The circular also included a stern warning against fraudulent activities. If a customer attempts to exchange counterfeit notes or a note created by pasting parts of different notes together, legal action will be taken against them in accordance with existing laws.  

Prosecutors in Los Angeles have charged Nick Reiner with the murder of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner, two days after the couple were found dead in their home. District Attorney Nathan Hochman said the 32 year old faces two counts of first degree murder with a special circumstance alleging multiple murders. The charges also include an allegation that a knife was used in the killings. If convicted, Reiner could face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. Prosecutors said no final decision has yet been made on whether they will seek capital punishment. Authorities said Rob and Michele Reiner were discovered with multiple stab wounds at their Brentwood residence. Autopsies are pending to determine the exact cause, manner and time of death. Reiner is expected to be brought before a court to formally hear the charges and enter a plea after he is medically cleared by prison officials. His arraignment has been postponed to a later date. Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell described the case as deeply personal and heartbreaking for the family and the city, and offered condolences to those affected. Top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz has announced the end of his long and highly successful partnership with coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, bringing to a close a seven-year collaboration that helped propel the Spaniard to the summit of men’s tennis. Alcaraz confirmed the decision on Wednesday through a message posted on his social media accounts. Ferrero had coached Alcaraz since he was just 15 years old, guiding him through his rapid rise from a promising junior to one of the most dominant players of his generation. During their time together, Alcaraz captured six Grand Slam titles — two French Opens, two Wimbledon championships and two U.S. Open crowns. Under Ferrero’s guidance, he also became the youngest player in history to reach No. 1 in the ATP rankings after winning the U.S. Open in 2022 at the age of 19. “After more than seven years together, Juanki and I have decided to bring our chapter together as coach and player to an end,” Alcaraz, now 22, wrote. “Thank you for turning childhood dreams into reality. Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on Wednesday that Moscow would seek to extend its territorial gains in Ukraine if Kyiv and its Western allies reject the Kremlin’s demands in ongoing peace talks. Speaking at an annual meeting with senior military officers, Putin said Russia preferred to achieve its objectives through diplomacy but was prepared to pursue them by force if negotiations collapse. “If the opposing side and its foreign patrons refuse to engage in substantive dialogue, Russia will achieve the liberation of its historical lands by military means,” he said. The comments come as U.S. President Donald Trump intensifies diplomatic efforts to end nearly four years of war following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Those efforts, however, have faced deep disagreements between Moscow and Kyiv over territory and security guarantees. Putin claimed Russian forces had seized and were holding the strategic initiative across the entire front line. He also warned that Moscow would move to expand a so-called “buffer security zone” along Russia’s border with Ukraine. “Our troops are different now. They are battle-hardened, and there is no other such army in the world,” Putin said, praising Russia’s growing military capabilities. He also highlighted the modernization of Russia’s nuclear arsenal, including the new nuclear-capable intermediate-range Oreshnik ballistic missile, which he said would officially enter combat duty this month. Russia tested a conventionally armed version of the missile in November 2024 against a Ukrainian factory, with Putin later claiming it was impossible to intercept. Ukraine and its Western allies have repeatedly described Russia’s actions as an unprovoked act of aggression and a violation of Ukrainian sovereignty. Putin’s remarks followed several rounds of talks this week involving Ukrainian, American and European officials on a U.S.-drafted peace proposal. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said after meeting U.S. envoys in Berlin that the document could be finalized within days before being presented to the Kremlin. Moscow is demanding international recognition of territories it occupies in four Ukrainian regions, along with Crimea, annexed illegally in 2014. It also insists Ukraine abandon its NATO aspirations and rejects the deployment of NATO troops on Ukrainian soil. Zelenskyy has said Kyiv could consider dropping its NATO bid in exchange for strong Western security guarantees, but he has firmly rejected Russia’s territorial demands.

Sierra Leone has declared the end of an mpox outbreak in the country. The declaration on Tuesday aligns with international health standards, which require a minimum of 42 days without a new confirmed case, Health Minister Austin Demby told a ceremony marking the second anniversary of the National Public Health Agency (NPHA). All 16 districts with reported cases have exceeded the 42-day timeframe, with several areas surpassing 150 days since their last infection. Since the first mpox case was recorded on Jan. 9, Sierra Leone has reported 5,442 confirmed cases, including 60 deaths. Foday Sahr, executive director of the NPHA, said the agency's establishment symbolizes Sierra Leone's commitment to never again facing health emergencies unprepared. The ceremony drew commendations from global health leaders, including Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, and Jean Kaseya, director-general of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who praised Sierra Leone's efforts in effectively addressing public health threats.  

Warner Bros. is advising shareholders to reject a hostile takeover bid from Paramount Skydance, arguing that a rival offer from Netflix would better serve customers and the entertainment industry. Paramount offered $30 per Warner share, higher than Netflix’s $27.75, but Warner’s board favors Netflix, citing fiduciary responsibilities and a thorough review of all proposals. Paramount has previously submitted six bids that Warner leadership rejected before taking the offer directly to shareholders. While Paramount’s bid remains possible, the board is clear that Netflix’s acquisition aligns with its long-term strategy. Unlike Paramount’s bid, Netflix would not acquire Warner’s cable networks, including CNN and Discovery. The deal would only proceed after Warner separates its cable operations. Critics have warned that merging Netflix with HBO Max could create excessive market dominance, while Paramount’s streaming service is comparatively smaller. The regulatory landscape remains complex for both deals. Paramount acquiring Warner’s cable and news operations could raise concerns over media consolidation and editorial influence, particularly following its $8 billion purchase of Paramount. Political dynamics may also affect approval. Former President Donald Trump has commented on both deals, noting potential market control concerns with Netflix and his ties to Paramount’s CEO’s family. The government has suspended 14 employees from various ministries and divisions following protests at the Bangladesh Secretariat demanding a special allowance. The action comes after a court accepted the chargesheet in a case filed against the employees. Different ministries and divisions issued notifications in this regard on Monday. On December 10, officials and employees staged protests in several offices of the Bangladesh Secretariat, demanding a Secretariat Allowance. During the protest, led by a section of the Bangladesh Secretariat Officers and Employees Joint Council, Financial Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed was confined to a Secretariat office for around six hours. Some employees leading the demonstrations were detained. Subsequently, a case was filed against them under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009 and they were formally shown as arrested. The employees are currently on remand in connection with the case. Among those suspended are Badiul Kabir, president of Bangladesh Secretariat Officers and Employees Sangjukta Parishad, vice-president Shahin Golam Rabbani and Nazrul Islam. Other suspended employees include Md. Tayeful Islam, Bikash Chandra Roy, Islamul Haque, Md. Mohsin Ali, Roman Gazi, and Abu Belal of the Ministry of Health; Mizanur Rahman Sumon of the Ministry of Information; Kamal Hossain and Mohammad Alimuzzaman of the Ministry of Public Administration; Bipul Rana Biplob of the Ministry of Finance; and Nasirul Haque of the Cabinet Division.  

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain on Wednesday said Bangladesh does not want advice from neighbouring India on how its elections should be conducted, stressing that the government is committed to holding a free and fair election in which people can exercise their democratic rights freely. “Bangladesh’s neighbour is trying to admonish it over the elections. This is completely unacceptable,” he said, mentioning that India did not issue similar calls for fair elections over the past 15 years. “We know we will hold a fair election, and we will do so,” Hossain told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs while responding to questions. Adviser Hossain said that there is 'tension' in the interim government's relationship with India. "It is better to accept the reality that, in fact, from the beginning of this government till today, there has been tension with India."  The foreign affairs adviser, however, said that the current government is trying to build a good working relationship with India by accepting this 'tension in relations'. Hossain said such a thing does not exist for it to happen and both sides have to make an effort to move the relationship forward. He believes that the way the Indian Ministry of External Affairs summoned the Bangladesh High Commissioner in Delhi on Wednesday is 'not very unexpected'. "This (summoning the Bangladesh High Commissioner in Delhi) is not very unexpected. It usually happens. When one person is called, the other is called," said Foreign Affairs Adviser Hossain. India summons Bangladesh envoy over security concerns Earlier, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah and said it was in favour of peace and stability in Bangladesh, adding that it had consistently called for free, fair, inclusive and credible elections conducted in a peaceful atmosphere. The Adviser said summoning the Bangladesh High Commissioner in New Delhi was a normal diplomatic practice, noting that the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka had also been summoned a few days earlier. Responding to another question, Hossain said it was difficult to say whether the already tense Dhaka–Delhi relations had taken on a new dimension. He also said no decision had yet been taken on downsizing the Bangladesh mission in India, adding that such a decision would depend on whether staff members had adequate engagement. Indian visa application centre in Dhaka to close at 2pm Wednesday Amid renewed tensions between the two neighbours, India’s MEA on Wednesday summoned High Commissioner Hamidullah and briefed him on what it described as the activities of certain extremist elements that have reportedly announced plans to create a security situation affecting Indian territory. High Commissioner Hamidullah was apprised of India’s strong concerns over the deteriorating security environment in Bangladesh. His attention was drawn in particular to the activities of some extremist elements who, India claimed, have announced plans to create a security situation around the Indian Mission in Dhaka. “India completely rejects the false narrative sought to be created by extremist elements regarding certain recent events in Bangladesh,” the MEA said in a media release issued after the meeting. “It is unfortunate that the interim government has neither conducted a thorough investigation nor shared meaningful evidence with India regarding the incidents,” the statement added. India said it maintains close and friendly relations with the people of Bangladesh, rooted in the Liberation War and strengthened through various development initiatives and people-to-people exchanges. India also said it expects the interim government of Bangladesh to ensure the safety and security of diplomatic missions and posts in the country in line with its international obligations. Meanwhile, in view of the ongoing security situation, the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) at Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka closed at 2:00 pm on Wednesday. “In view of the ongoing security situation, we wish to bring to your kind notice that IVAC JFP Dhaka will be closed at 2 pm today,” said a notification issued by the IVAC. The notification added that all applicants with appointment slots scheduled for submission on Wednesday would be rescheduled for a later date. The IVAC at Jamuna Future Park is the main integrated centre for all Indian visa services in the capital.

The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has recovered a motorbike, a helmet and a fake number plate used in the attack on Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inquilab Moncho, from the capital’s Bonolota Residential Area. The motorcycle, helmet and fake number plate were recovered in abandoned condition at around 8:45am on Sunday from the Bonolota Residential Area, DMP's DC (media) Talebur Rahman said on Wednesday afternoon. According to the sources, a CTTC team, after examining CCTV footage, found that the number plate of the motorbike used in the attack had been changed. Acting on intelligence information, the team recovered the bike and the helmet from the ground-floor parking area of a building in Bonolota Residential Area under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. Later, the fake number plate was recovered from inside a manhole where it had been abandoned. CTTC sources said an in-depth investigation was carried out to identify the ownership of the motorbike. The bike changed hands eight times before it was purchased in the name of Mainuddin Islam using the national identity card of Md Kabir, an associate of Faisal, the prime suspect in the attack, CTTC sources said. The recovered goods have been handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) for further legal action, the sources added.

BNP has formed a reception committee ahead of the return of its Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to Bangladesh on December 25. The committee was formed on Monday with BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed as the convener and BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi as the member secretary, said BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan. BNP sources said the committee includes the party’s 10 divisional organising secretaries, the presidents and general secretaries of BNP front organisations, and the conveners and member secretaries of BNP’s Dhaka North and South city units. The first meeting of the committee was held on Tuesday afternoon, where members discussed the work plan for welcoming Tarique Rahman back home. Earlier on Monday, a joint meeting of BNP and its front organisations was held at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan to discuss arrangements for Tarique’s reception. The meeting was chaired by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. After more than 17 years in exile in London, Tarique Rahman is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on December 25. As per BNP’s plan, a large number of party leaders and activists will gather at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on December 25 to welcome Tarique and make his homecoming memorable. From the airport to Evercare Hospital, where his mother Begum Khaleda Zia is receiving treatment, BNP members will stand on both sides of the road to greet him. Party sources also said Tarique will first go to Evercare Hospital after his arrival to see his mother who has been receiving treatment there in a critical condition. Later, he is expected to stay at a house at number 196 on Gulshan Avenue, next to his mother’s residence, ‘Firoza’. Meanwhile, BNP has appointed Brigadier General (retd) AKM Shamsul Islam as the chief security officer to oversee the security of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. The decision was announced on Wednesday on Wednesday in a statement signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. Rizvi said Shamsul Islam will coordinate all security arrangements for the two top party leaders and ensure that all necessary measures are taken for their safety.  

A union-level BNP leader shot dead in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna district on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Biru Molla, 60, son of late Abul Molla and convener of Luxmikunda union unit of  BNP. Victim’s son Rajib Molla said, on Tuesday night local Awami League Zahurul Molla, also cousin of Biru Mollah, along with his son Al Amin Molla, forcibly cut soil from Biru Molla’s land for use in a brick kiln. When Biru Molla went to ask Zahurul Molla about the soil cutting at around 9:15 am on Wednesday, Zahurul and his son Al Amin became enraged and immediately shot Biru Molla in the head with an illegal firearm. Biru Molla collapsed on the spot and was rushed by locals to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty physician, Dr Tasnim Tamanna Swarna, declared him dead. Former Ishwardi upazila BNP member secretary Ajmal Hossain Sujon said those responsible for killing his party leader must be brought to justice immediately. 2 youths die after consuming alcohol in Pabna “This is not a party issue. Deceased Biru Molla was the first cousin of the accused Zahurul Molla. The incident occurred over soil cutting,” he added. Mominuzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ishwardi Police Station, said that necessary legal action would be taken following investigation. “As of 3:30 pm on Wednesday no case had been filed,” the OC added.    

The Election Commission (EC) has called for equal opportunities for all candidates in election coverage on Bangladesh Television and private TV channels. Creating a congenial environment is crucial for free, fair, and credible elections, said an EC statement signed by Md Ruhul Amin Mollick, director (public relations) of the organization, on Wednesday.  State and private media can play a key role by providing equal access to information for all candidates, ensuring balanced coverage during election-related programs, interviews, talk shows, and dialogues, the statement reads. Referring to rule 25 of the Political Party and Candidate Code of Conduct-2025, the statement highlighted that candidates or their representatives may participate in televised election dialogues but must refrain from making personal attacks against anyone. All television channels and other media outlets have been requested to exercise caution, provide equal opportunities to all candidates and avoid broadcasting any remarks or statements that demean or disparage any party or candidate, said the statement.  

Vehicular movement on the Rampura–Natun Bazar road resumed on Wednesday evening after a two-hour blockade enforced by July Oikya, demanding the return of those allegedly involved in an attempt to kill Osman Hadi, spokesman of Inquilab Moncho. July Oikya activists blocked the Rampura-Badda road in the afternoon, marching towards the Indian High Commission in Dhaka to press their demand for the extradition of the suspects. After keeping the road blocked for nearly two hours, the organisation announced the end to its programme. Earlier, at around 3pm, a procession led by Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Social Welfare Secretary AB Zubair started from Rampura Bridge and advanced towards North Badda. The demonstrators later staged a sit-in on the road in front of Hossain Market in North Badda after facing police resistance, chanting slogans such as ‘Delhi or Dhaka, Dhaka is Dhaka’ and ‘Why was my brother Hadi attacked?’ Addressing the gathering, Zubair said they had no intention of advancing further with the procession and only wanted to convey that no one would be allowed to impose dominance over Bangladesh. “There is no fear. We will not attack the Indian High Commission. Our protest is a non-violent one. But if anyone tries to maintain hegemony over Bangladesh, they will not be spared,” he said. Due to the blockade, severe traffic congestion gripped the entire area. With police barricades on both sides of the road and protesters occupying one side, all types of vehicles remained halted from Natun Bazar to Rampura for nearly two hours. July Oikya blocks Rampura-Badda road over Hadi attack attempt Vehicular movement on the Gulshan–Badda link road was also suspended during the blockade, causing immense suffering to commuters. At around 5pm, July Oikya announced the end of its programme. The protesters warned of tougher movements ahead if the alleged attackers of Hadi are not brought back. Although traffic resumed on the Rampura-Natun Bazar road after police removed the barricades, heavy congestion persisted across the area due to pressure from stranded vehicles.    

BNP senior leader Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan on Wednesday said Bangladesh cannot afford to return to a fascist path again in the future. “We don’t want Bangladesh to be known again in the world as a fascist state. We want to build a humane Bangladesh,” he said. The BNP leader made the remarks while speaking at a discussion organised by the Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB) at the Jatiya Press Club. Dr Moyeen, a BNP Standing Committee member, said Bangladesh is now one of the most densely populated countries in the world, and by 2050 Dhaka is expected to become the most crowded large city. “How we will run such a city is a matter to think about. Though we are not economically strong yet, we are surviving on an informal economy. Those who will run the country in future must work on these issues,” he said. The BNP leader said the Awami League, instead of serving the people, created a system of self-serving power groups, which he termed an “oligarchic structure.” “As a result, the poor have become poorer,” he observed. The BNP leader said even after 54 years of independence, the nation is still searching for democracy. “For democracy the people fought the Liberation War in 1971. They fought for economic rights and dignity. Those who led the country in the past and those who are leading now must answer why they failed,” he said. Tough days ahead as conspiracies persist, warns Tarique Rahman Dr Moyeen said every authoritarian ruler in Bangladesh faced resistance whenever they tried to take away freedom of speech. “Modern state systems can be cruel because they make people numb and ignore human feelings. Those who come to power in future must make this clear,” he said. DAB President Prof Dr Harun Al Rashid chaired the discussion, which was attended by BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council members Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Prof Dr Forhad Halim Dona, and DAB Secretary General Dr Md Zahidul Islam Shakil and others.      

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur said on Wednesday that recovering laundered money from abroad is a lengthy process and it may four to five years. Dr. Mansur made the remarks while talking to reporters after a meeting with Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed at the Secretariat. When asked about the progress in bringing back siphoned funds, he said significant advancement has been made as the government is very sincere regarding this issue. Responding to a question over potential recovery he mentioned the case of former Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury in London. “We will be very lucky if this case is resolved quickly. Since they (the accused) did not contest the case, they have lost by default.. I cannot say exactly when the money will arrive—it could be February, March, or possibly by June," Dr. Mansur added. He said other cases depend on formal applications and are subject to long legal processes abroad. "In those instances, there is little we can do to speed it up," he added. Responding to queries regarding the S. Alam Group, the Governor said the conglomerate has filed for international arbitration. "S. Alam has filed for arbitration in Washington against us. It is a case of the thief shouting the loudest.We will contest the case vigorously," the Governor said.

July Oikya on Wednesday blocked the Rampura-Badda road while marching to encircle the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, demanding the extradition of those allegedly involved in the attempted killing of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson and prospective independent candidate for Dhaka-8 constituency, Osman Hadi. The march, led by Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Social Welfare Secretary AB Zubair, started from Rampura Bridge around 3:00 pm and advanced towards North Badda. However, facing police resistance, the demonstrators sat on the road in front of Hossain Market in North Badda, chanting slogans such as ‘Delhi or Dhaka, Dhaka is Dhaka’ and ‘My brother Hadi—why did Hadi have to die?’ Addressing the protesters, Zubair said they had no intention of moving further with the procession and only wanted to send a message that no one would be allowed to impose dominance over Bangladesh at will. “We are not afraid, and we will not attack the Indian High Commission. Our protest is a peaceful one. But if anyone tries to maintain hegemonic control over Bangladesh, they will not be spared,” he said. The blockade triggered severe traffic congestion across the area, as police barricades were placed on both sides of the road and protesters occupied one side, halting all vehicular movement from Natun Bazar to Rampura.

The European Union (EU) will send 175-200 observers to monitor the upcoming parliamentary election and the referendum on the July National Charter, scheduled to be held on February 12, 2026, said EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed on Wednesday. “The EU has confirmed that it will deploy an observer mission in our election….Some 175-200 EU observers will arrive here at different times to observe the polls,” he said while briefing reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city. Ivars Ijabs, a member of the EU Parliament, would lead the EU election observation mission in Bangladesh, he said. The EC Secretary, however, said he would not be able to say further details about when they start arriving here. He said the EU observers would come here to watch the election following a tripartite agreement signed among the Election Commission, the Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh and the EU on Monday last. Akhtar Ahmed said the EU observers would follow the local necessity protocols particularly in the Chittagong hilly area. He said so far two-three international organisations and countries confirmed that they would send their observer missions to Bangladesh. In response to a formal invitation by Bangladesh authorities, the High Representative/Vice President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas has decided to deploy an EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) to observe the parliamentary elections scheduled for 12 February 2026.  The High Representative has appointed Ivars Ijabs, Member of the European Parliament, as its chief observer.  "I am honoured to lead this EU Election Observation Mission to Bangladesh, which will deliver an independent and impartial assessment of the electoral process," Chief Observer Ijabs said on Tuesday.  This mission, Ijabs said, is a tangible example of the EU support to the people of Bangladesh and their aspiration for stronger democratic institutions, the rule of law and human rights. The EU said they are supporting the conduct of "free and fair, participatory" elections. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin on December 11 last announced the schedule to arrange the 13th parliamentary election and the referendum on the July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Implementation Order simultaneously on February 12 next. According to the election schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination paper is December 29, while the scrutiny of nomination paper is on December 30-January 4 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is January 20. The election campaign will start on January 22 and continue till 48 hours before the balloting period (7:30am on February 10).

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has intensified security through setting up more check posts in the capital on Wednesday to ensure public safety and maintain law and order. The checkposts will be operational from 4:00pm at several strategic locations under different crime divisions of the DMP, said DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Talebur Rahman on Wednesday afternoon. The areas include Bosila under Ramna Division; Babubazar under Lalbagh Division; Postogola Bridge, Matuail U-loop and Staff Quarter under Wari Division; Basabo Road (Kamalapur) under Motijheel Division; Gabtoli under Mirpur Division; 300 Feet Road under Gulshan Division; and Abdullahpur Bridge, Kamarpara and Dhaur Bridge under Uttara Division. DMP intensifies drive to arrest attackers of Hadi Law enforcement officials said the checkposts will focus on monitoring suspicious movements, verifying vehicles and individuals, and preventing any untoward incidents. The DMP has urged city residents to cooperate with police personnel during the checkpost operations in the greater interest of public safety and security.  

The Finance Division on Wednesday unveiled the third Public Financial Management (PFM) Reform Strategy 2025–2030, signaling a decisive shift in Bangladesh’s fiscal governance by widening the focus toward building institutional strength, accountability, and improved service delivery. Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed formally launched it at a ceremony organised by Strengthening Public Financial Management Program to Enable Service Delivery (SPFMS) at the multipurpose hall of the Finance Division in the capital. The new framework provides a comprehensive roadmap to strengthen fiscal discipline, manage rising public risks, and ensure better value for money at a time when Bangladesh faces mounting pressure from climate change, global economic volatility, and expanding public expenditure needs. Addressing the event adviser Salehuddin said, “We are accountable to the general public and this long-awaited PFM Strategy is about ensuring transparency, accountability, and better quality of public services.” He called upon officials of the Finance Division, the National Board of Revenue (NBR), the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General (OCAG), and other relevant actors to accelerate implementation of the strategy, stressing that coordinated action is essential to establish a stronger system of governance and a more transparent public financial system that delivers real benefits to citizens. Finance Secretary Dr Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder presided over the event, while Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh Md Nurul Islam and World Bank Division Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan Jean Pesme attended as special guests. I firmly believe that a strong PFM system, supported by a strong and independent audit mechanism, is essential to ensuring the success of the reform agenda.” Finance Division rolls out SABRE+ to boost transparency in public sector World Bank Division Director Jean Pesme said Bangladesh has made notable progress through reforms such as iBAS++ and the digitalisation of pension systems which have strengthened credibility, oversight, and transparency in the use of public resources. The 2025–2030 framework is structured around 15 reform pillars covering fiscal sustainability, revenue mobilisation, public investment management, treasury and debt management, procurement, internal and external oversight, digital transformation, and capacity building. For the first time, the strategy fully mainstreams climate-smart PFM, gender-responsive budgeting, and sector-specific financial management reforms for health, education, and social protection. Resilience is a central theme of the strategy. With Bangladesh’s tax-to-GDP ratio among the lowest in the region and fiscal exposure increasing through SOE liabilities and contingent risks, the document places strong emphasis on improved macro-fiscal forecasting, integrated debt management, and transparent reporting of fiscal risks. The strategy also emphasises institutionalisation and implementation, noting that the success of the next reform phase will depend on sustained political commitment, stronger coordination across agencies, and continued investment in public sector capacity. As Bangladesh moves toward upper-middle-income status, the new PFM Reform Strategy positions public finance not merely as a technical function, but as a cornerstone of economic governance, equity, and public trust.  

Nearly a year after a devastating fire ripped through the Bangladesh Secretariat, destroying vital documents, the government has decided to undertake a major modernisation project to strengthen fire safety and ensure uninterrupted power supply at the Secretariat and other key government installations. The project, titled “Modernisation of Existing Electrical-Mechanical and Fire Safety Equipment to Ensure Fire Safety at the Bangladesh Secretariat, Transport Pool, Ministers’ Apartment and Secretary’s Residence,” will be implemented by the Public Works Department under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works. With an estimated cost of Tk 112.87 crore, the project will be fully financed through government funds. Its implementation period has been fixed from January 2026 to December 2027. The project will cover the Bangladesh Secretariat, the Ministers’ Apartment at Bailey Road, the Secretary’s Residence at Eskaton and the Transport Pool area under Dhaka South City Corporation. According to the project document, the main objectives are to ensure a sustainable and uninterrupted electricity supply and to establish a fire-safe working environment at these key government installations. As part of the project, outdated electrical substations at Secretariat buildings No-3, 4, 7 and 8, along with the RMU building, will be replaced and modernised.  Modern fire-fighting systems will be installed at Secretariat buildings No-2 to 11, the Transport Pool, the Ministers’ Apartment and the Secretary’s Residence. Fire at Bangladesh Secretariat building brought under control after six hours The project also includes replacement and modernisation of the generator at Secretariat building No-7, installation of ELT cables and other ancillary works. Service cables at buildings No-3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 and the Transport Pool will be upgraded to meet increasing power demand. Old lifts at Secretariat buildings No-4 and 6 will be replaced, while fire lifts will be installed at the Ministers’ Apartment and the Secretary’s Residence. Lightning protection systems will be modernised at Secretariat buildings No-2 to 11 and the Transport Pool. Public address (PA) systems will be supplied and installed at Secretariat buildings No-2 to 11, the 20-storey building and the Transport Pool. The project further includes installation of cable ladders at buildings No-4, 6 and 7, laying of HT express lines from the GIS station to various substations, modernisation of HVAC systems at the Ministers’ Apartment and Secretary’s Residence, and construction of water reservoirs for pump houses and fire hydrants at the Bangladesh Secretariat and Ministers’ Apartment. Steel foot-over bridges will be constructed between buildings No-5 and 6 and between buildings No-6 and 7. To facilitate the installation of fire lifts, steel lift cores with curtain walls and other related works will be undertaken at the Ministers’ Apartment and Secretary’s Residence. Officials said Bangladesh Secretariat currently comprises 10 buildings, eight of which were constructed before independence.  Over the years, the creation of new ministries and divisions and the expansion of existing ones have significantly increased manpower, resulting in higher electricity demand and added pressure on outdated electrical and mechanical systems. They added that existing systems at the Ministers’ Apartment and Secretary’s Residence are old, costly to maintain and inadequate from a fire safety perspective, while the absence of fire lifts in multi-storey buildings has further increased risks. The Planning Commission, in its recommendation, said the project would play a crucial role in ensuring uninterrupted power supply and creating a fire-safe working environment at the Secretariat, Transport Pool, Ministers’ Apartment and Secretary’s Residence once implemented. In December 2024, a devastating fire gutted four floors of a building at the Bangladesh Secretariat, destroying crucial files, documents, computers, furniture and other equipment belonging to six divisions under five ministries. The blaze also caused extensive damage to the building’s walls and floors. The affected offices included the Road Transport and Highways Division, two divisions of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, the Posts and Telecommunications Division, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Fire at Bangladesh Secretariat sparks concerns of sabotage After nearly 10 hours of strenuous efforts by 19 firefighting units, the fire was finally brought under control.  During the operation, a firefighter was killed after being run over by a truck while setting up hose pipes in the early hours.  

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami central leader and Dhaka south Ameer Md Nurul Islam Bulbul collected his nomination paper for Chapainawabganj-3 (Sadar) constituency on Wednesday. He collected the paper from the office of the district returning officer at noon. A fire that broke out at a plastic product-manufacturing factory in Islambagh area in Dhaka has been brought under control. Anwarul Islam, warehouse inspector at the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) headquarters media cell, said the fire originated from a factory in Chairmangaht area of Islambagh at around 1:30pm and quickly spread. Keraniganj building fire under control; 45 rescued On information, 11 firefighting units from several fire stations, including Lalbagh, Hazaribagh and Palashi rushed to the scene at around 1:50pm and brought the blaze under control at 4pm. The cause of the fire could not be known yet, the official said.  

Amid fresh tensions in relations between two neighbours, India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday (December 17, 2025) summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah and briefed him on the activities of certain extremist elements who have reportedly announced plans to create a security situation around Indian territory. High Commissioner Hamidullah was apprised of India's strong concerns at the deteriorating security environment in Bangladesh. His attention was drawn, in particular, to the activities of some extremist elements who have announced plans to create a security situation around the Indian Mission in Dhaka. "India completely rejects the false narrative sought to be created by extremist elements regarding certain recent events in Bangladesh," the MEA said in a media release following the summon. Delhi's Cooperation South Bangladesh Sunday sought India’s cooperation in preventing the escape to India of the suspects involved in the recent attempted assassination of Bangladeshi political leader Sharif Osman Hadi and, in case they manage to enter into Indian territory, to ensure their immediate apprehension and extradition to Bangladesh. Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam summoned High Commissioner Pranay Verma at State Guest House Padma and emphasised that as a neighbour, India is expected to stand with the people of Bangladesh in upholding justice and safeguarding democratic processes. The High Commissioner of India emphasised that India looked forward to peaceful elections in Bangladesh and expressed his country’s readiness to extend all cooperation in this regard. Police have already identified the attackers and their associates in the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, the spokesperson of the Inquilab Moncho and a potential independent candidate for Dhaka-8 constituency. Intensive operations by law enforcement agencies are continuing to arrest them, said the interim government. To prevent the main suspect from crossing the border, photos and other information of the suspects were provided to all immigration check posts on Friday night. Patrols of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and RAB have been intensified in the border area. Although the location of the suspects has been identified several times within the country, it has not been possible to arrest them yet due to their repeated changes of location, the government said. Hasina’s Extradition The Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed the government of Bangladesh’s serious concern to the government of India over former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The ministry expressed its objection over India allowing fugitive Sheikh Hasina to continue making incendiary statements, urging her supporters to engage in ‘terrorist’ activities in Bangladesh with the aim of disrupting the upcoming national election. Bangladesh reiterated her call for the expeditious extradition of Sheikh Hasina and former minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to face the sentences handed down by the judicial authorities in Bangladesh. Highlighting the importance of safer, fairer and skilled migration, Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday said the submission of fake documents has emerged as a major barrier to sending people abroad, despite the huge opportunities offered by destination countries for Bangladeshis. “Bangladesh has become quite famous globally for the submission of fake documents,” he said, noting that the country continues to face the same complaints from receiving nations, regardless of the destination. Prof Yunus cited an example raised by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to illustrate the severity of the problem. He said the migration system is heavily dominated by brokers and syndicates, where the government’s role remains limited. Prof Yunus also warned that the widespread use of fake documents is leading to the closure of doors for Bangladeshi workers seeking employment abroad. The Chief Adviser was speaking at a function in the city marking the International Migration and National Expatriates Day. Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul was, among others, present. International Migrants Day (IMD) is observed on 18 December, reaffirming the need for safer, more inclusive, and fairer migration systems in a rapidly changing world. Despite its proven benefits, migration remains poorly understood, and systems often lack the investments, partnerships, and evidence needed to respond to today’s realities. The 15 people killed in Sunday’s deadly shooting at a Hanukkah gathering at Sydney’s Bondi Beach included a 10 year old child, an 87 year old Holocaust survivor, community volunteers, religious figures and bystanders who tried to stop the attackers, according to information released by families and community groups. Australian authorities have described the attack, carried out by two gunmen during a public celebration, as antisemitic terrorism inspired by the Islamic State group. Among the victims was Matilda, a 10 year old girl whose family asked that her surname not be published. Her teacher described her as gentle and compassionate, saying she was known for seeing kindness in others. Boris Gurman, 69, and his wife Sofia Gurman, 61, were also killed. Family members said the couple, married for nearly 35 years, were shot while trying to intervene and stop one of the attackers shortly after the violence began. Eli Schlanger, 41, the assistant rabbi at Chabad Lubavitch of Bondi, was another victim. He helped organise the Hanukkah event and was also known for his work as a prison and hospital chaplain in New South Wales. Schlanger was a father of five. Yaakov Levitan, 39, a rabbi and father of four, was described by the Chabad movement as a key figure in Sydney’s Jewish community, working largely behind the scenes in community service and administration. Marika Pogany, 82, was a longtime volunteer who delivered kosher meals to elderly and vulnerable people. Jewish community organisations said she had spent decades supporting those in need. Dan Elkayam, 27, a French national living in Sydney, was remembered by family and his football club as a talented soccer player and a kind person who was well liked by teammates and friends. Peter Meagher, a retired police officer, was working as a freelance photographer at the event. A rugby club where he volunteered described him as a respected figure who was killed while carrying out his work. Reuven Morrison, 62, was killed while attempting to stop one of the gunmen, according to his family. He had migrated to Australia decades earlier after facing antisemitism in the former Soviet Union. Alex Kleytman, 87, a Holocaust survivor who later settled in Australia, was also among the dead. His wife said he died while trying to protect her during the attack. Another victim, Tibor Weitzen, 78, a grandfather who migrated to Australia in the late 1980s, was remembered by family members as deeply devoted to his children and grandchildren. Authorities continue to investigate the attack as funerals and memorials for the victims begin across Sydney.

The Election Commission (EC) has instructed the relevant authorities to send SMS alerts to all government officials and employees, encouraging them to register for voting through postal ballots ahead of the upcoming parliamentary election and the referendum on the July Charter. The instruction was given in a letter signed on Wednesday (December 17) by KM Ali Newaz, Additional Secretary of the Election Commission and Project Director of the OCV–SDI project. According to the letter, government officials and employees working inside the country, as well as officers and employees of the armed forces who receive salaries through the iBAS++ system, will be able to cast their votes through an IT-supported postal ballot after completing registration via the “Postal Vote BD” app. The registration process will remain open until December 25, 2025, the letter said. The EC has instructed the authorities concerned to send SMS messages to all military and civilian government officials and employees who are drawing salaries through the iBAS++ system, requesting them to complete their registration through the app by the stipulated deadline. The SMS text will be “All government officials and employees (military and civilian) are requested to complete registration through the ‘Postal Vote BD’ app by December 25, 2025, to cast votes through IT-supported postal ballots.” The Commission said postal ballots will be sent by mail to the registered voters’ addresses. After casting their votes, voters will have to return the ballots in the provided return envelopes to the respective returning officers. Though the postal balloting system has been in the laws for a long time, it was never practised in the previous elections. Among them, the probable polling personnel who are not in the government services, and the prisoners will be able to register after December 17 to 25 for voting through the postal ballots in the upcoming election. So far 46,701 government officials and employees registered through the app to vote in the February-12 election after the announcement of the election schedule announced on December 11. The Election Commission said postal ballots will be sent by mail to the registered voters’ addresses. After casting their votes, voters will have to return the ballots in the provided return envelopes to the respective returning officers. The EC also said that instructions in this regard have already been sent to the Secretary of the Finance Division. The Trump administration on Tuesday expanded US travel restrictions to cover 20 additional countries and the Palestinian Authority, doubling the scope of sweeping limits announced earlier this year on who can travel to or immigrate to the United States. Under the new decision, five more countries have been added to the list facing a full ban on entry to the US, while 15 others will be subject to partial restrictions. People travelling on documents issued by the Palestinian Authority are also now fully barred. The measures are set to take effect on Jan 1. The administration said the move is part of broader efforts to tighten US travel and immigration standards, citing national security, immigration enforcement and foreign policy concerns. Officials pointed to problems such as corruption, unreliable civil documents, high visa overstay rates and refusals by some governments to accept deported nationals. Those exempted from the restrictions include lawful permanent US residents, people who already hold valid visas, diplomats, athletes and others whose entry is deemed to be in the US national interest. In June, President Donald Trump announced a ban on travellers from 12 countries and partial restrictions on seven others, reviving a signature policy from his first term. Countries already under a full ban included Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, while partial restrictions applied to Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. The administration said the full ban list has now been expanded to include Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan and Syria. South Sudan had already been subject to significant travel limits. Partial restrictions have been imposed on Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Ivory Coast, Dominica, Gabon, Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Tonga, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The restrictions apply to both visitors and those seeking to immigrate to the US. The decision follows the arrest of an Afghan national accused of shooting two National Guard troops near the White House over the Thanksgiving weekend. In the aftermath, the administration announced a series of new immigration measures, including tougher rules for people from countries already under restrictions. Critics said the expanded ban unfairly targets people based on nationality rather than individual risk. Advocacy groups also warned that the updated policy no longer includes an exemption for Afghans eligible for Special Immigrant Visas, which are granted to those who assisted US forces during the war in Afghanistan. Several governments affected by the new measures said they were seeking clarification from US officials. Dominica said it was treating the issue with urgency, while Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador to Washington described the matter as serious. The administration also adjusted earlier restrictions, tightening rules for Laos and Sierra Leone while easing some limits on travellers from Turkmenistan. Other measures announced in June remain unchanged. The new restrictions on Palestinians expand earlier limits that had already made it difficult for holders of Palestinian Authority passports to travel to the US, and now also block them from immigrating. The administration said the decision was based on security concerns, citing the presence of US designated terrorist groups in the West Bank and Gaza and challenges in vetting amid ongoing conflict.  

President Donald Trump on Tuesday ordered what he described as a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela, sharply escalating pressure on President Nicolás Maduro and tightening restrictions on the country’s oil-dependent economy. Trump announced the move on social media, days after US forces seized an oil tanker off Venezuela’s coast following a military buildup in the region. He alleged that Venezuela was using oil revenue to fund drug trafficking and other crimes and said the US would continue increasing its military presence. In his post, Trump claimed Venezuela was now surrounded by a major US naval force and warned that pressure would intensify until the country returned oil, land and other assets he said had been taken from the United States. Pentagon officials referred questions about the announcement to the White House. Venezuela’s government strongly condemned the order, accusing Trump of violating international law, free trade rules and freedom of navigation. In a statement, Caracas said the US president was making a reckless and serious threat by attempting to impose a naval blockade and was falsely claiming ownership of Venezuela’s natural resources. The government said it would raise the issue at the United Nations. The announcement follows a series of US military strikes on boats in international waters in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific as part of an anti-drug campaign. US officials say the operations have disrupted drug trafficking routes, though they have drawn criticism from lawmakers concerned about civilian deaths and legal boundaries. At least 95 people have been killed in 25 known strikes, according to the Associated Press. The Trump administration has said the campaign aims to stop drugs bound for the United States, but senior officials have also suggested it is intended to weaken Maduro’s grip on power. Australian police on Wednesday charged a suspected gunman in the deadly Bondi Beach shooting with 59 offences, including 15 counts of murder, as Sydney’s Jewish community began holding funerals for victims of what authorities described as a terror attack. Police said Naveed Akram, 24, was formally charged after regaining consciousness in a Sydney hospital, where he had been in a coma since police shot him during Sunday’s attack. His father and alleged accomplice, Sajid Akram, 50, was killed at the scene. The charges include one count of murder for each fatality, one count of committing a terrorist act, about 40 counts of causing grievous harm with intent to murder and one count related to placing an explosive device with intent to cause harm. Police said improvised explosive devices were found in the suspects’ car at the crime scene. Investigators said two attackers killed 15 people and wounded more than 20 others during an antisemitic assault targeting Jews celebrating Hanukkah at Bondi Beach. All identified victims were Jewish. The ages of those killed ranged from a 10-year-old girl to an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor. As the city mourned, authorities said the attack was believed to be inspired by the Islamic State group. Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett said the suspects had come to the attention of security agencies in 2019, and investigators were now reviewing what was previously known about them. Police are also examining overseas travel by the suspects, including a trip to the Philippines in November. Philippine authorities confirmed the visit but said there was no recent evidence of foreign militants operating in the country’s south. The first funeral held was for Eli Schlanger, 41, an assistant rabbi at Chabad-Lubavitch of Bondi and organiser of the Hanukkah event where the shooting occurred. Heavy police security surrounded funeral services as coronial processes delayed burials. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese vowed to take firm action against antisemitism and announced plans to further tighten Australia’s already strict gun laws after it emerged that the older suspect legally owned multiple firearms. Across Australia, people marked the tragedy with vigils, blood donations and silent gatherings at Bondi Beach, while parts of the crime scene remained sealed off as the investigation continued.  

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has described himself as “half-Sylheti” while speaking at a discussion meeting on Great Victory Day at the City Pavilion in London. “Many of you here are not just from Sylhet, but from other districts as well. Yet most of you are Sylhetis,” he said. The BNP leader made the remarks while addressing a discussion organised by the London Chapter BNP at the City Pavilion, marking Great Victory Day early on Wednesday. Bangladesh Embassy in Mexico City observed the Victory Day 2025 with due respect and solemnity on Tuesday. A large number of Bangladeshi expatriates and distinguished members of the local Bangladeshi community participated in events organised by the embassy. The day-long programme began with the hoisting of the national flag at the embassy premises by Ambassador Mushfiqul Fazal Ansarey. Followed by this, a special discussion session was held at the embassy auditorium where he paid tribute to all martyrs of the Liberation War, including the martyred President Ziaur Rahman and the nation’s valiant freedom fighters, while highlighting the historic significance of Victory Day. Addressing the event, Ansarey said, “On this glorious day in 1971, our cherished independence was won through the blood of countless martyrs. Their sacrifice, bravery, and unparalleled courage will remain immortal in the history of our nation.” He said, “Our freedom was not presented on a silver platter; it had to be seized through a bloody struggle, immense sacrifice, and selflessness. We saw this spirit of defiance continue during the July mass uprising, when fearless young people stood up against oppression, injustice, and tyranny.” The ambassador emphasised that freedom of expression must remain unrestricted. However, it cannot be misused to rehabilitate democratic killers, murderers, or looters, underlining the importance of unity in preventing the resurgence of fascist forces.  

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested three more people, including the parents of prime suspect Faisal Karim Masud, in connection with the attempted murder of Dhaka-8 aspiring independent candidate Sharif Osman Hadi in Puratan Paltan. With the latest arrests, the total number of detainees in the case has risen to 10. The newly arrested people are Faisal’s father Humayun Kabir, 70, his mother Hasi Begum, 60, and another suspect, Md Faisal, 25, a resident of Narsingdi. They were later handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, according to a media release issued by RAB-10 on Tuesday night (December 16, 2025). Preliminary investigations revealed that Faisal, the third of four siblings, frequently visited his sister Jesmin Akter’s apartment in Dhaka’s Agargaon area. On the night of the incident, he reportedly carried a bag to the apartment and later disposed of it discreetly. He subsequently sent his 18-year-old nephew, Jamil, to retrieve the bag. During the period, Faisal also threw one of his mobile phones from the rooftop and handed another phone to his mother, RAB officials said. Feeling insecure in Agargaon, Faisal allegedly moved to Mirpur and later to Shahjadpur, where he stayed at the residence of his cousin Arif, the nephew of his father Humayun Kabir. "In view of the on-going security situation, we wish to bring to your kind notice that IVAC JFP Dhaka will be closed at 2 PM today," said a notification issued by the IVAC in Dhaka. All applicants with appointment slots scheduled for submission today will be rescheduled for a later date. BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Tuesday urged party leaders and activists to remain alert and united, warning that the days ahead will be challenging as conspiracies against the country continue. “I am saying again, the time ahead will not be easy. Everyone must stay alert and united,” he said. The BNP leader made the remarks while addressing a discussion meeting organised by London Chapter BNP at the City Pavilion, marking the Great Victory Day early Wednesday. Referring to the political situation in Bangladesh, he said the conspiracies have not stopped and the upcoming national election will not be easy. “I warned you a year ago that difficult times lay ahead. The conspiracies would continue and the election would not be easy. Many of you can now see that what I said then is happening,” he said. Addressing a hall full of expatriate Bangladeshis, Tarique asked whether they would be able to stay united. When the audience responded loudly in the affirmative, he said unity is the key to success. “If we stay united, only then will we be able to implement our plan to rebuild the country. We can build the Bangladesh we dream of and establish accountability only if we remain united,” the BNP leader said. BNP completes preparations for Tarique’s return after 18 years in exile Citing the United Kingdom as an example, Tarique said people in Britain enjoy fairness because of an accountable system, while people in Bangladesh have been deprived of their rights for a long time. “There is no alternative to unity. United we stand, divided we fall,” he said. Tarique Rahman was arrested in 2007 during the army-backed caretaker government. After falling seriously ill in custody, he came to London in 2008 on bail for advanced medical treatment, accompanied by his wife Zubaida Rahman and daughter Zaima Rahman. After nearly 18 years in exile, Tarique is set to return to Bangladesh on December 25. The Victory Day programme with expatriates also served as a farewell event, as Tarique prepared to lead the party ahead of the 13th parliamentary election scheduled for February 12 next year. At the start of his speech, Tarique spoke about his upcoming return and thanked the expatriates for their support over the years. “I am returning home on December 25, InshaAllah, with your prayers and Allah’s mercy. I ask for your prayers for me and for our leader, Begum Khaleda Zia. Pray that Allah gives me the strength to carry out the plans I have for the country and its people,” he said. The BNP leader also requested that no one go to Heathrow Airport on the day of his arrival. “Gathering at the airport could create chaos and attract unnecessary attention, harming the image of the country and the party. Those who respect my request will honour the party and the country. If some go despite my request, I will assume they have done so for personal reasons,” he added. A short video was shown highlighting Bangladesh’s journey from the 1971 Liberation War to recent student-led protests and the vision for a new Bangladesh. He further highlighted the urgency for working collectively towards realising the opportunity created through the July–August mass uprising to build a discrimination-free and inclusive Bangladesh. Shafiqur Rahman paid profound homage and tribute to the valiant martyrs, the wounded freedom fighters in the liberation war of 1971 whose sacrifices made the country’s independence possible.  He also paid deep respect and tribute to the martyrs of July Mass Uprising, recalling the long-drawn struggle and fight of the freedom fighters against oppression, injustice, discrimination and unfairness in 1971. Shafiqur said that the July Mass-Uprising added a new dimension towards achieving the unfulfilled dream of the liberation war by providing the opportunity to build a fair, just corruption-free and inclusive Bangladesh 2.0, a dream envisioned by the valiant freedom-fighters of the Liberation War. Drawing an analogy on the unique spirit of the Liberation War and July Mass-uprising 2024, he underlined that as the valiant freedom fighters laid down their invaluable lives for the cause of freedom leading to the emergence of Bangladesh, a new state free from political, social and economic discrimination, the youths of the new generation in 2024 made supreme sacrifices to rebuild the country based on the values of democracy, equity, fairness and justice. Delivering the concluding remarks, he urged all expatriate Bangladeshis to work from their respective positions towards building a new Bangladesh 2.0 in the spirit of the Liberation War and the Mass-uprising 2024. Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC), the state-owned maritime operator, is preparing a landmark plan to procure 22 mother vessels worth Tk 10,000 crore, aiming to strengthen the nation’s control over seaborne foreign trade. If implemented over the next five years, the initiative will significantly expand the presence of Bangladeshi-flagged ships in the country’s import-export operations, officials said. They said the move could both conserve foreign currency and increase revenue, while creating new training and employment opportunities for seafarers. BSC will fund the procurement partly through its own resources and partly via government-to-government agreements, sourcing vessels from South Korea and China. A milestone in BSC’s 54-year history came last October when the corporation purchased a ship with its own funds. The vessel, Banglar Pragati, marked the first time BSC procure a ship independently. “Historically, this is the first time a ship has been purchased with our own funds,” BSC Managing Director Commodore Mahmudul Malek told UNB. “As part of this plan, another cargo vessel, Banglar Nobojatra, will join the fleet by the end of December. Two new cargo ships with capacities of 55,000–66,000 tons are expected to generate an annual revenue of Tk 150–200 crore. Currently, our fleet has six ships, and we plan to expand it to 22 mother vessels over the next five years,” he said. Industry experts say expanding the state-owned fleet is essential to reduce reliance on foreign carriers. Engineer Mahbubur Rahman, vice president of the Bangladesh Merchant Marine Officers’ Association, highlighted the need for more ships. Considering Bangladesh’s growing trade, more vessels are required,” he said. At one time, BSC held the highest number of Bangladeshi-flagged vessels, with 34 ships in the 1990s. Over the years, the fleet shrank due to aging ships, irregularities, and mismanagement. The decline forced the country to rely heavily on foreign shipping, costing nearly Tk 1 lakh crore in foreign currency annually. Though BSC gradually procured six new ships since 2018, one was lost to a missile strike amid the Russia-Ukraine war, and two oil tankers were decommissioned following a fire, leaving the fleet with just five ships. The addition of Banglar Pragati last October temporarily increased the fleet to six. Chittagong Port Authority member (Harbour and Marine) Commodore Amin Ahmed Abdullah noted, “Increasing the number of domestic-flagged vessels will enhance Bangladesh’s competitiveness in international trade and improve efficiency in import-export operations.” Shafiqul Alam Jewel, former vice president of the Bangladesh Shipping Agents’ Association, added, “Currently, all BSC vessels operate abroad and rarely dock at Chittagong or within Bangladesh waters. For the country’s economic interest, these ships should be deployed on domestic routes.” BSC reported a record Tk 250 crore profit last year. Since starting operations in 1972, the corporation’s fleet has fluctuated, once numbering 38 ships, while the private sector’s fleet surpassed 100 vessels. Dhaka, the overcrowded capital city of Bangladesh, has ranked sixth on the list of cities with the worst air quality with an AQI score of 199 at 9:50 am this morning (December 17, 2025). Today Dhaka’s air was classified as ‘unhealthy’ referring to a healthy threat, according to the AQI index. Such unhealthy air quality continued for the past few days. When the AQI value for particle pollution is between 50 and 100, air quality is considered ‘moderate’, usually sensitive individuals should consider limiting prolonged outdoor exertion, between 101 and 150, air quality is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, between 150 and 200 is ‘unhealthy’, between 201 and 300 is said to be 'very unhealthy', while a reading of 301+ is considered 'hazardous', posing serious health risks to residents. Bosnia Herzegovina’s Sarajevo, India’s Delhi and again Kolkata cities respectively occupied the first, second and third spots on the list, with AQI scores of 450, 285, and 239 respectively. The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is and what associated health effects might be a concern for them. The AQI in Bangladesh is based on five pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2, and ozone. ‘Unhealthy’ air quality persists in Dhaka Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution issues. Its air quality usually turns unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon. As per World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year, mainly due to increased mortality from stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections.

The Trump administration announced Tuesday an expansion of U.S. travel restrictions to include 20 additional countries and the Palestinian Authority, doubling the number of nations affected by limits introduced earlier this year. The updated policy imposes full travel bans on citizens of five new countries — Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, and Syria — as well as individuals traveling on Palestinian Authority-issued documents. Fifteen other countries face partial restrictions, including Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Ivory Coast, Dominica, Gabon, Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Tonga, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The rules apply to both visitors and prospective immigrants. The restrictions do not apply to those who already hold U.S. visas, lawful permanent residents, diplomats, athletes, or individuals whose entry is deemed in the U.S. national interest. The measures are set to take effect on Jan. 1. The administration cited concerns over corruption, unreliable civil documentation, high rates of visa overstays, refusal of some countries to accept deportees, and instability as reasons for expanding the restrictions. Hyundai and Kia have agreed to provide free repairs for millions of vehicles under a nationwide settlement aimed at addressing weaknesses in anti-theft technology that left the cars vulnerable to theft. The agreement, announced Tuesday by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, requires the automakers to repair all eligible vehicles at no cost to owners, a program that could exceed $500 million. The companies must also ensure that all future vehicles sold in the United States are equipped with engine immobilizers — a key anti-theft device — and pay up to $4.5 million in restitution to consumers whose vehicles were damaged by thieves. The settlement involves 35 states, including California, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Vehicles eligible for the fix were sold between 2011 and 2022, with an estimated 9 million affected nationwide. The case followed a sharp rise in Hyundai and Kia thefts after videos circulating on TikTok and other social media platforms beginning in 2021 showed how certain models could be stolen using simple tools such as a screwdriver and a USB cable. In Minneapolis alone, thefts of the two brands jumped by more than 800% from 2021 to 2022, prompting Ellison to launch an investigation in early 2023. Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah has emphasised that Bangladesh-India relations are “deep and multi-layered,” and called for a future shaped by trust, dignity and mutual respect. He made the remarks while commemorating the 54th Victory Day of Bangladesh at the Mission’s Maitri Hall. We are here to celebrate, to remember, to acknowledge, and reflect on the future.” The High Commissioner paid homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War, including freedom fighters and victims of atrocities, said the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi. “Our tribute to all the Freedom Fighters (muktijoddhya), including Biranganas,” he said, recalling the immense sacrifices made in 1971. He acknowledged India’s role, recalling the 1,668 Indian soldiers who made supreme sacrifice on Bangladesh soil.  

Usman Khawaja made a dramatic return to the Ashes, steadying Australia at 94-2 after the opening session of the third Test against England on Wednesday. FIFA has sharply reduced prices for a limited number of World Cup tickets for the most dedicated supporters following a wave of global criticism, allowing some fans to buy seats for as little as $60 — including for the final — instead of paying up to $4,185. The move marks a rare retreat by FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino, who have faced mounting backlash over World Cup planning decisions, particularly high ticket prices and closer political ties with U.S. President Donald Trump. FIFA announced Tuesday that $60 tickets will be available for every match at the North America tournament. These tickets will be allocated to national football federations whose teams are competing, with each federation responsible for distributing them to loyal supporters who regularly follow their teams at home and abroad. Between 400 and 750 tickets per team per match are expected to be offered under what FIFA now calls a “Supporter Entry Tier.” The tournament will be staged across 16 cities — 11 in the United States, two in Canada and three in Mexico. While FIFA did not directly explain the sudden policy shift, it said the lower-priced tickets are intended to better support traveling fans throughout the competition. However, Football Supporters Europe (FSE), which represents grassroots fan organizations, described the move as a response to intense global criticism. It said the decision exposed flaws in FIFA’s ticketing policy, claiming it was rushed and introduced without meaningful consultation. The expanded 48-team World Cup — up from 32 — is projected to generate at least $10 billion in revenue for FIFA and is set to be the most expensive tournament ever for fans. Despite protests over pricing, FIFA said it has already received more than 20 million ticket requests in the latest sales phase. FSE warned that most supporters would still face extremely high prices, exceeding those of any previous World Cup. Early promises and rising criticismFans reacted angrily last week when FIFA’s original ticket plans showed that participating teams would receive no tickets in the lowest-priced category, despite being entitled to 8% of stadium capacity. Group-stage tickets were priced between $140 and $265 for matches not involving host nations. Higher prices applied to games featuring popular teams such as Argentina, Portugal, Brazil and England. Critics noted that the host countries had promised during their bid that hundreds of thousands of tickets priced around $21 would be available before the knockout rounds. European fans have also criticized FIFA’s use of dynamic pricing and added resale fees, practices common in the U.S. entertainment market but unfamiliar to many football supporters. Fan anger grew further when it emerged that supporters reserving tickets for all potential matches through the final would only receive refunds after the tournament. FIFA said Tuesday it will waive administrative fees on those refunds. Disability access concernsFSE also urged FIFA to overhaul its approach to fans with disabilities, saying resale platforms were offering accessible seats at inflated prices without guarantees they would reach disabled supporters. In response to a formal invitation by Bangladesh authorities, the High Representative/Vice President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas has decided to deploy an EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) to observe the parliamentary elections scheduled for 12 February 2026.  The High Representative has appointed Ivars Ijabs, Member of the European Parliament, as its chief observer.  Read more: IRI pre-election observation team meets EC Sanaullah "I am honoured to lead this EU Election Observation Mission to Bangladesh, which will deliver an independent and impartial assessment of the electoral process," Chief Observer Ijabs said on Tuesday. 

The condition of Sharif Osman Hadi, Inqilab Moncho spokesperson who was looking to run in the upcoming election as an independent candidate, had deteriorated slightly according to primary tests upon reaching Singapore, but is now stable. Inqilab Moncho's verified Facebook page provided the update in the evening, quoting Hadi's brother who travelled with him as the source.  Hadi is being treated at the Singapore General Hospital.  It added that he will need another surgery, but Hadi's physical condition is not yet ready for it. Earlier on Monday, an air ambulance equipped with all emergency facilities for a critical patient, departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport carrying Hadi, who was shot in the head from close range in an assassination attempt last Friday, to Singapore for advanced treatment. The decision to send Hadi abroad for treatment was taken on Sunday. RAB arrests close aide of main accused in attempted assassination of Osman Hadi He was shot after Jummah prayer on Bijoynagar Boxculvert road in the capital. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with bullet injuries from where he was shifted to Evercare hospital. Following the incident, law enforcement agencies launched a series of operations to identify and arrest those involved. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police earlier said Faisal Karim Masud, alias Daud Khan, a Chhatra League activist with a criminal record. Although he is believed to have crossed the border into India with another suspect with links to the Awami League, who drove the motorcycle from which Faisal/Daud shot Hadi while riding pillion. RAB and police have already earlier arrested eight suspects for their alleged roles in aiding the shooter.  

Bangladesh celebrated Victory Day on Tuesday with great enthusiasm, as people across the country paid homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War through ceremonies, rallies, and cultural programmes. The celebration began with the traditional 31-gun salute ringing out across the capital at the break of dawn, to honour the nation’s martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the Liberation War. At the Old Airport area in Tejgaon, an artillery regiment of the Bangladesh Army fired 31 rounds from six guns to pay tribute to the heroic martyrs who laid down their lives in the War of Liberation. President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War by placing wreaths at the National Memorial here, on the outskirts of the capital with the rise of the sun. 

Children with cancer and their families across several countries were exploited in online fundraising scams that raised millions of dollars for treatment but delivered little or none of the money to the intended beneficiaries, a BBC World Service investigation has found. The investigation uncovered at least 15 families who said they received little to nothing from fundraising campaigns created in their children’s names, despite emotionally charged videos being used to solicit donations globally. Nine families linked to what appears to be the same scam network said they received none of the roughly $4 million apparently raised. One of the cases involved Chance Letikva Khalil, a seven-year-old boy from the Philippines who died of cancer a year after appearing in a fundraising video. His mother, Aljin Tabasa, said she was paid a one-time filming fee of $700 but never received any of the $27,000 the campaign appeared to have raised online. According to the BBC, families were often asked to stage highly emotional scenes, including shaving children’s heads, attaching fake medical equipment and forcing children to cry on camera. Parents said they were told the videos would help raise funds for better treatment. The campaigns were found to be professionally produced and widely promoted online, often claiming urgent, life-or-death situations. Many were linked to an organisation called Chance Letikva, registered in Israel and the United States, as well as other similarly named entities.

Dhaka University has observed the great Victory Day today through a range of programs. On the occasion, activities were organized across the campus all day long.  The programs included the hoisting of the national flag at dawn at the Vice-Chancellor’s Building and other important university buildings, a gathering at the Smriti Chirantan premises, and the laying of wreaths at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar by teachers, students, officers, and staff of the university under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan. Among those present were Pro Vice Chancellor (Admin) Professor Dr. Sayma Haque Bidisha, Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Treasurer Professor Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, along with teachers, students, officers, and employees. Exhibitions and screenings of Liberation War-based paintings, films, and documentaries were organized at various residential halls. Different student organizations also arranged diverse programs marking the day. On the occasion, important campus locations including the Faculty of Arts Building, Curzon Hall, the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), and Smriti Chirantan were illuminated with decorative lighting. Residential halls were also adorned with lights. After the Asor prayers, special prayers were offered at the university’s central mosque, Masjidul Jamia, as well as at mosques in various halls and residential areas, seeking forgiveness for the souls of the martyrs and praying for the country’s prosperity and development. Special prayers for the eternal peace of the martyrs were also held at other places of worship on campus. In the evening, a cultural program was held at the TSC Auditorium, jointly organized by the Department of Music, the Department of Dance, and the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies of the university.

Sudan has topped a global watchlist of humanitarian crises for the third consecutive year as a devastating war continues to ravage the northeastern African nation, an international aid group said on Tuesday. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) placed Sudan at the top of its annual Emergency Watchlist, which identifies 20 countries facing the risk of worsening humanitarian conditions in 2026. The IRC urged the international community to urgently scale up humanitarian funding, warning that global aid has dropped by about 50 percent this year and that 2025 is on track to become the deadliest year on record for aid workers. The occupied Palestinian territories and South Sudan ranked second and third on the list due to severe humanitarian challenges. Other countries on the watchlist include Ethiopia, Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon, Ukraine, Syria and Yemen. Although the listed countries account for only 12 percent of the world’s population, they represent 89 percent of people in need of humanitarian assistance, with 117 million displaced worldwide, the IRC said. It warned that these countries are expected to host more than half of the world’s extremely poor by 2029, describing the situation as a breakdown of the post World War II international order. The group said many of the conflicts are fueled by struggles for power and profit. In Sudan, it noted that warring parties and their international backers have benefited from the gold trade, with devastating consequences for civilians. David Miliband, president and chief executive officer of the IRC, said the watchlist reflects deep global misery but also serves as a warning, calling on the international community to act before 2026 becomes even more dangerous. The IRC also called for binding global actions, including suspending the use of veto power at the UN Security Council in cases involving mass atrocities. Sudan descended into chaos in April 2023 when tensions between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces erupted into open warfare. The conflict has been marked by mass killings, sexual violence and ethnically motivated attacks, which the United Nations and international rights groups have described as war crimes and crimes against humanity. According to UN figures, more than 40,000 people have been killed, though aid groups say the actual death toll could be far higher. The war has displaced more than 14 million people and triggered widespread disease outbreaks and famine in parts of the country, creating what aid agencies describe as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Both the military and the RSF have been accused of violating international law, with most atrocities attributed to the RSF. The United States has accused the group of committing genocide in the Darfur region. The latest wave of violence was reported in late October after the RSF captured el-Fasher, the military’s last stronghold in Darfur. Witnesses said RSF fighters went door to door, killing civilians and carrying out sexual assaults. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity were committed in the city. Satellite imagery analyzed by Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab indicated widespread and systematic killings, including attacks on civilians trying to flee or sheltering in residential neighborhoods. The RSF has not responded to requests for comment on the allegations.  

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said proposals being negotiated with the United States to end Russia’s nearly four-year war against Ukraine could be finalized within days and then presented to Moscow. Speaking after talks with U.S. officials in Berlin on Monday, Zelenskyy said the draft peace plan was not perfect but workable, although major issues remain unresolved, including the future of Ukrainian territories occupied by Russian forces. U.S.-led diplomatic efforts appear to be gaining momentum, with American officials saying there is agreement with Ukraine and European partners on about 90 percent of the U.S.-authored peace framework. U.S. President Donald Trump said a peace settlement is closer than ever before. Zelenskyy said discussions in Berlin brought negotiators close to an agreement on strong security guarantees for Ukraine. A NATO country official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the proposal is based on Western support to keep Ukraine’s military strong. Under the plan, European countries would lead a multinational force to help secure Ukraine by land, sea and air, while the United States would head a ceasefire monitoring and verification mechanism with international participation, the official said. However, the focus is now shifting to Moscow, where Russian President Vladimir Putin may oppose parts of the proposal, including postwar security guarantees for Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated on Tuesday that Russia wants a comprehensive peace deal rather than a temporary truce. He said Moscow would not accept solutions that merely give Ukraine time to regroup before continuing the war. Zelenskyy said the land issue remains a key obstacle. He stressed that Ukraine will not recognize Russian control over any part of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, which includes Luhansk and Donetsk. Russian forces do not fully control either region, although Trump has previously suggested Ukraine may have to concede territory. Zelenskyy said the United States is exploring compromise ideas, including the proposal of a free economic zone in the Donbas, but stressed that such a zone would not be under Russian control. Putin is seeking international recognition of Russian control over parts of four Ukrainian regions seized by his forces, as well as Crimea, which Moscow illegally annexed in 2014. Zelenskyy warned that if Putin rejects diplomatic efforts, Ukraine will seek stronger Western pressure on Russia, including tougher sanctions and increased military assistance such as enhanced air defense systems and long-range weapons. He said Ukraine and the United States are preparing up to five documents related to the peace framework, with several focused on security arrangements. Zelenskyy described the Berlin talks as positive, saying they demonstrated unity among the United States, Europe and Ukraine.  

The Embassy of Bangladesh in Tokyo celebrated the Great Victory Day 2025 with due solemnity and a series of commemorative programmes. The day’s activities began at the Embassy premises with the hoisting of the National Flag, accompanied by the playing of the National Anthem in the morning. The flag was hoisted by the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Japan, Md. Daud Ali, in the presence of Bangladeshi expatriates, officials, and staff of the Embassy. In the afternoon, the Embassy hosted a reception attended by members of the Bangladeshi community in Japan. On the occasion, messages from the President, the Chief Adviser, and the Adviser on Foreign Affairs were read out. Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Md. Daud Ali paid tribute to the valiant martyrs of the Great Liberation War. He also expressed profound respect for the martyrs of the July 2024 mass uprising and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
