The Power Division has prioritised the energy sector as a key focus area as it moves to meet the country’s rising electricity demand in summer amid growing global uncertainties. The country currently has a total installed power generation capacity of 32,332 MW, including 28,919 MW from grid-based sources, while daily demand stands at around 14,500-15,000 MW, according to an official document. However, as the sweltering heat of summer approaches, the stability of the national grid faces a complex set of challenges. Despite having sufficient capacity to meet existing demand, the national grid is expected to come under pressure during the peak summer months, when consumption surges and localised outages become more frequent. These disruptions are largely driven by maintenance requirements, storm damage, and infrastructure limitations in the transmission and distribution networks. A significant hurdle remains the supply of primary fuel. The global energy market has become increasingly volatile due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has complicated the procurement and pricing of energy resources. This international instability trickles down to the local level, making it difficult at times to sustain full supply during the highest consumption hours. In response, the Power Division is implementing a 180-day action plan aligned with the government's election manifesto. This strategy includes diversifying energy sources with a heavy emphasis on renewable energy and coordinating infrastructure development with new generation projects. Beyond technical solutions, the government is focusing on-demand side management. Efforts include holiday staggering for industries and public awareness campaigns through leaflets and videos to encourage energy conservation. By combining short, medium, and long-term planning with intensive project supervision, the Power Division aims to navigate the current global energy crisis while ensuring that the lights stay on for citizens throughout the rising summer temperatures. According to the official document, the government has taken steps to increase power generation in line with the increase in power demand. These included taking the power sector as the highest priority sector, diversifying energy sources for power generation, ensuring primary energy supply for power generation and formulating a 180-day action plan in light of the government's election manifesto. It has also taken steps for formulating and implementing short, medium and long-term plans for power generation, construction/development of transmission and distribution infrastructure in coordination with power generation, campaigning (leaflets, videos) to increase consumer awareness on energy conservation, holiday staggering and demand side and supply side management, etc, and giving importance to power generation from renewable energy. The Power Division has also taken steps for ensuring necessary financing for the power sector in the annual development programme and timely implementation of power projects through intensive supervision and quickly identifying and resolving problems in project implementation.

Ahead of the election in Sherpur-3 (Sreebardi-Jhenaigati) constituency scheduled for April 9, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has deployed its 16 platoons to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful voting process. Following directives from the Election Commission, BGB personnel will serve as mobile and static forces from five days before the election to two days after the polls to maintain law and order. According to a press release issued by the BGB Mymensingh Battalion (39 BGB), under the supervision of the Mymensingh sector, the deployed platoons have established four base camps across Sreebardi and Jhenaigati upazilas to carry out their duties. Given that Sherpur-3 is a bordering constituency, the BGB presence has been strengthened, with personnel on the frontier also providing support to election areas as needed. The Sherpur-3 election, originally scheduled for February 12, was postponed following the death of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Nuruzzaman Badal. As per the revised schedule, voting will be held on April 9.

A U.S. service member who went missing after Iran shot down an F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet on Friday has been rescued, President Donald Trump announced on social media Sunday. A second crew member had been rescued earlier. Trump said the rescued aviator was injured but “will be just fine.” He described a massive search-and-rescue operation involving “dozens of aircraft” and 24-hour monitoring of the service member’s location. This was the first U.S. aircraft lost in Iranian territory since the conflict began in late February. The downing occurred amid escalating U.S.-Iran tensions. Trump renewed his threat for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by Monday or face severe retaliation. In response, Iran’s Gen. Ali Abdollahi Aliabadi warned that the “doors of hell will be opened” on U.S. and Israeli infrastructure in the region. Meanwhile, a second U.S. aircraft, an A-10 attack jet, also went down, though details of its crew and crash site remain unclear. Iranian state media said it was struck in the Persian Gulf. Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire are ongoing, with Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt mediating talks. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed Tehran’s willingness to attend Islamabad-hosted talks. The proposed plan would halt hostilities to allow a diplomatic settlement. The conflict, involving U.S.-Israel strikes on Iranian infrastructure, has killed over 1,900 people in Iran, more than 1,400 in Lebanon, dozens in Gulf Arab states and the West Bank, and 13 U.S. service members. Iran has also threatened strategic waterways, including the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a major global shipping route. The situation remains volatile as both sides continue air and missile operations, raising international concerns over civilian casualties and regional escalation.

Government-imposed austerity measures – featuring revised office hours and shorter business operations – came into effect on Sunday as the country moves to curb energy consumption amid the ongoing Middle East crisis. Under the new schedule, all government and private offices will operate till 4:00pm starting at 9:00am, while markets, retail outlets and shopping malls must close by 6:00pm. In line with the government’s directive, Bangladesh Bank has adjusted the office and transaction hours for all scheduled banks and non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs). These institutions will remain open from 10:00am to 5:00pm, with customer transactions allowed between 10:00am and 3:00pm. Trading on the capital market will now end at 2:00pm, half an hour earlier than usual, after opening at 10:00am. A decision on implementing an energy-saving plan in educational institutions is still pending. Officials said the matter will be finalised following consultations with relevant stakeholders. Meanwhile, emergency services have been kept outside the purview of the new office schedule. These include essential utilities such as electricity, water, gas and other fuels, along with fire service, port operations, sanitation, telecommunications and postal services. Healthcare services, including hospitals, doctors, medical staff, as well as vehicles transporting medicines and equipment, and the media, will also continue to operate without disruption.

A total of 56 more children, showing symptoms consistent with measles, were admitted to hospitals across 10 districts of Khulna division in the 24 hours till Saturday afternoon. During the period, two children died in Kushtia Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment with such symptoms. Of the new suspected measles patients, 13 were hospitalised in Satkhira, 12 in Kushtia, six in Khulna, five each in Jashore, Magura and Narail, three each in Chuadanga and Jhenaidah, and two each in Meherpur and Bagerhat,. Currently, over 300 children are receiving treatment at hospitals across the division, according to the Khulna Divisional Health Director’s office.

Thousands of hectares of boro paddy in Sunamganj’s haor areas are under threat as severe waterlogging triggered by unusually heavy upstream rainfall continues to inundate croplands across the district. The situation has turned critical since the last week of March when excessive rainfall in upstream catchment areas caused rivers to swell and overflow, sending water rushing into the low-lying haors. Farmers are now locked in a dispute over how to manage the excess water. While those in the upper haors are pressing to cut embankments to ease waterlogging, downstream farmers are resisting the move, fearing their fields will be submerged. According to official data, at least 1,189 hectares of boro land have already gone under water. Sources at the Water Development Board (WDB) said 710 Project Implementation Committees (PICs) were formed this season across 53 haors to construct crop protection embankments. Although earthwork has been completed turfing is still underway in many areas. Rainfall data shows a sharp increase this year, with Sunamganj recording around 200 millimetres of rain in March compared to just 5 millimetres during the same period last year. “The excessive rainwater from upstream has overflowed rivers and entered haors from multiple points,” said a senior WDB official. An emergency meeting held by the district administration on March 31 was followed by field inspections to assess drainage requirements. Khulna division reports 56 suspected measles cases in 24 hours Authorities have so far cut embankments in at least 10 haors on a limited scale to release trapped water. However, tensions among farmers persist. “If farmers in the upper areas cut the dams, those downstream resist to protect their crops,” said Md Selim, a resident of Mohanpur village in Sunamganj Sadar upazila. According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), boro has been cultivated on 223,511 hectares in more than 200 haors in the district this season. “If fully harvested, the crop could yield around 1.4 million tonnes of rice, with an estimated market value of Tk 5,050 crore,” said DAE Deputy Director Md Omar Faruk. “But farmers now fear significant losses due to waterlogging and the possibility of further heavy rainfall,” he said. Waterlogging has already affected several haors, including Mini Pagnar, Halir, Kailani, Chhayar, Putiyar, Dakuar, Joalbhanga and Kanlar. Local farmers complained that many natural drainage canals have been encroached upon or filled up over the years, worsening the situation. Chittaranjan Talukder, vice-president of Haor Banchao Andolan, said early and intense rainfall has overwhelmed the natural water bodies. “Rivers, canals and beels that usually act as reservoirs are already full and overflowing. Waterlogging is widespread, and farmers are struggling to cope,” he said. adding that proper dredging of rivers and wetlands could help mitigate the crisis. WDB Executive Engineer Mamun Howlader said emergency drainage   efforts are underway. “Rainfall in both Cherrapunji and Sunamganj has been significantly higher this year. Some haors are already being drained,” he said. Officials warned that the situation may worsen, with heavy rainfall forecast for April 6–7. “As the season progresses timely intervention is crucial to prevent large-scale crop losses,” said Omar Faruk. With uncertainty looming, haor farmers are now anxiously waiting for effective measures to save their standing crops.

At least 30 universities in Iran have been affected by US and Israeli strikes since the start of the war, authorities said, as attacks increasingly hit infrastructure linked to research, health and industry. Iran’s Minister of Science, Research and Technology Hossein Simaei Saraf said parts of dozens of universities have been damaged since fighting began on February 28. The latest strike hit the Laser and Plasma Research Institute at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran on Friday, leaving the facility in ruins. There were no casualties at the university as classes had already been moved online, though nearby dormitories sustained minor damage. Iranian officials condemned the attack, calling it a blow to scientific research and academic security. Other institutions, including Iran University of Science and Technology and the Pasteur Institute in Tehran, have also been hit. The World Health Organization said the Pasteur Institute sustained significant damage, disrupting its ability to provide health services, though no deaths were reported. The escalation comes as US and Israeli forces widen their strikes beyond military targets to include economic and industrial infrastructure. Heavy bombardment in the southern city of Mahshahr damaged refineries, while Iranian authorities reported casualties. Iranian officials say more than 2,000 people have been killed in attacks on civilian areas, including homes, schools and businesses, though the figures could not be independently verified. Meanwhile, tensions remain high over the Strait of Hormuz, with Washington warning of further action if Iran does not reopen the key shipping route. Tehran has vowed retaliation, raising fears of a broader regional escalation.

Iran has warned it will target US and Israeli infrastructure if attacks against it intensify, amid growing regional tensions following fresh threats and military actions. Gen. Ali Abdollahi Aliabadi, commander of Iran’s joint military command, said Saturday that Iran would strike all infrastructure used by the US military in the region as well as Israeli facilities if aggression escalates. His remarks were carried by Iranian state media. The warning came hours after former US President Donald Trump urged Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, warning of severe consequences if it failed to comply. “Time is running out — 48 hours before all hell will reign down on them,” Trump said on social media, reiterating an earlier deadline. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israeli forces had launched new strikes on Iranian targets. In a video statement, he said Israel had attacked petrochemical facilities after previously damaging Iran’s steel production capacity. The Israeli military said its air force struck a petrochemical complex in Mahshahr in southwestern Iran earlier on Saturday, alleging the site was used to produce materials for explosives, ballistic missiles, and other weaponry. “I promised that we will continue to act against the regime in Tehran, and that is exactly what we are doing,” Netanyahu said.

Eight platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed to maintain law and order for the Bogura-6 (Sadar) by-election scheduled to be held on April 9. According to a BGB handout issued on Saturday, the deployment aims to ensure that the by-election is held in a free, fair, impartial and peaceful manner. As per the instructions of the Election Commission, BGB personnel will remain on duty in the constituency until April 11. The eight platoons, drawn from BGB’s Naogaon Battalion (16 BGB) and Patnitala Battalion (14 BGB), have already begun their duties by setting up three base camps in Bogura Sadar upazila. BGB members will be deployed as both mobile and static forces to maintain overall law and order, including conducting patrols before, during and after the election. BGB said it regularly assists the civil administration in maintaining internal law and order across the country. As part of this role, its members will work in coordination with other law enforcement agencies during the by-election. The force expressed hope that voters will be able to cast their votes without hindrance and that the election will be conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner. The by-election was necessitated after the Bogura-6 seat fell vacant as Prime Minister Tarique Rahman relinquished the seat while retaining the Dhaka-17 constituency.

The BNP Standing Committee on Saturday night discussed holding the party’s next national council and expanding its political and organisational activities. “We discussed how we can quickly move the party towards a council in the near future in order to further expand our political and organisational activities,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. He made the remarks while talking to reporters after over a two-hour meeting of the party’s Standing Committee at the party chairman’s Gulshan office. Fakhrul said the meeting also reviewed the 47-day programme taken by Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, and Standing Committee members shared their opinions and suggestions on various aspects of the initiatives. He said their discussions mainly focused on strengthening and expanding the party’s organisational and political activities. “We will try to move towards the council as quickly as possible, and we discussed this in detail,” he added. Asked whether the party council will be held before Eid-ul-Azha, he replied in the negative, saying it would take at least a few months to prepare before fixing a date. The party last held its sixth national council on March 19, 2016. Replying to another question, he said the issue of nomination of party candidates for the parliament’s reserved seats for women did not come up for discussion at their meeting. He said their chairman convened the meeting of the Standing Committee, the party’s highest policymaking body, to discuss how to keep the party active and continue its regular activities. The meeting began at around 8:40pm with BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair and ended around 11:50pm. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku and Prof AZM Zahid Hossain attended the meeting in person. Nazrul Islam Khan and Selima Rahman joined the meeting virtually. Another Standing Committee member, Mirza Abbas, is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore. This was the first meeting of the BNP’s highest policymaking body since the party returned to power through the February 12 national election. The last meeting of the Standing Committee was held on January 9 at the same venue.  

A five-member committee has been formed to investigate the fire at a tin-shed gas lighter factory in Kadamtali of Keraniganj that left at least five people dead. The committee is headed by the Director (Operations and Maintenance) of the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD), said Shahjahan Sikder, Deputy Assistant Director of the FSCD headquarters media cell. The committee has been asked to submit its report within seven working days. The fire broke out around 1pm at the factory, which manufactured gas lighters. Seven firefighting units rushed to the scene around 1:16pm after receiving the information and brought the blaze under control around 2:30pm, he added. The fire was completely extinguished at 4:44pm.

There has been another reported attempt to stop an ambulance carrying a patient in Shariatpur, raising alarm and anger among locals. On Saturday morning around 8am, a Dhaka-bound ambulance transporting a patient at a low cost in front of Shariatpur Sadar Hospital was stopped allegedly by a local youth named Sourav, who reportedly tried to take the vehicle’s keys. When the patient’s relatives intervened, an argument ensued. At one point, the relatives were threatened with beating, and pushing and shoving occurred. Fearing for their safety, the patient’s relatives were forced to turn the ambulance around and leave. Locals alleged that an influential syndicate has long controlled ambulance services in the area. They claimed that whenever patients are transported at a lower cost, obstacles are created and threats are made to intimidate the operators. The incident has caused deep concern among residents. Locals have urged the administration to take immediate action to ensure that such incidents do not recur and that patients can be transported safely without interference. Earlier in January, a patient died in an ambulance that was obstructed twice allegedly by a local ambulance syndicate in Shariatpur district. Jamshed Ali Dhali, 65, died because he did not receive timely treatment as the ambulance carrying him was stopped at two locations for around one and a half hours on the way to Dhaka, his family claimed. Later, Jubayer Hossain Ruman Dhali, grandson of the deceased, filed a case against four identified and six unidentified people with Palong Model Police Station, said Shah Alam, Officer-in-Charge of the police station. Later, police arrested Sumon Khan, the ambulance driver, in this connection during a drive in the Shariatpur district town. The other accused in the case were—Sajib, 18, Pervez, 26 and Hannan, 25.

Real Madrid could drop further behind La Liga leader Barcelona after a 2-1 loss at Mallorca on Saturday. Madrid conceded in stoppage time and stayed four points behind ahead of the Catalan club's match at fourth-placed Atletico Madrid later Saturday. Mallorca has risen out of the relegation zone after its second win in three league matches. The host opened the scoring thanks to Manu Morlanes in the 42nd minute. Madrid equalized in the 88th through Éder Militão, who was back in the squad after an injury layoff of nearly four months. The winner came from Vedat Muriqi one minute into added time. Mallorca moved to 17th place, two points clear of the bottom three. Madrid suffered its third defeat in its last six league matches. The club has five league losses all season. Also, Real Sociedad beat Levante 2-0 at home.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has expressed deep shock over the deaths in a fire at an unauthorised gas lighter factory in South Keraniganj. In a statement on Saturday night, he said the fire broke out at the Kadamtali factory around 1pm and five people, including three women, had died as of the time of the statement. Two others are seriously injured and undergoing treatment in hospital. He said the grief of the families of those killed in this tragic accident will never be filled. Dr Shafiqur Rahman prayed for the forgiveness of the souls of the deceased and expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the injured. He said such accidents continue to occur due to the operation of illegal and unsafe factories, which is very worrying. He added that these losses are the result of irresponsibility and lack of proper supervision by the authorities concerned. He urged the government to conduct a thorough investigation, identify those responsible, and take strict legal action. He also called for the injured to receive the best possible treatment and for appropriate financial compensation to be provided to the families of both the deceased and the injured. The Jamaat Ameer stressed that effective measures must be taken against illegal factories and safety standards in industrial plants must be strengthened to prevent such accidents in the future.  

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma has said art is a very strong medium in Bangladesh-India relationship that brings the people together. "It manifests that connection. Apart from the fact that we share a history, geography, language, culture, traditions, art has always been a foundational connector between us," he said. The High Commissioner, while speaking at a function on Friday, said exchange of art and artists had been something that has been very profoundly part of their culture, of our engagement. "They have inspired each other, they have influenced each other, they have collaborated with each other to produce masterpieces," said the Indian envoy. The High Commissioner said he looks forward to more and more exchanges between Bangladesh and India in the field of art, and they will be very happy to facilitate it, enable it and encourage it in whatever way we can.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Iran has 48 hours to strike a deal on opening up the Strait of Hormuz or face "Hell." "Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. "Time is running out -- 48 hours before all Hell will reign (sic) down on them," Trump said. On March 21, Trump threatened to "hit and obliterate" Iranian power plants if the country fails to fully open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. Two days later, however, he postponed strikes on power plants for five days after holding "productive conversations" with Tehran. He later again pushed the deadline back.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday expressed deep shock and sorrow at the loss of lives in a fire at a gas lighter factory in Keraniganj and ordered an immediate investigation to determine the cause and hold those responsible accountable. “Soon after learning about the incident, the Prime Minister spoke over the phone with the health minister, the local lawmaker, the deputy commissioner and the director general of Fire Service and Civil Defence, among others,” said a statement signed by the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Saleh Shibly. The Prime Minister also instructed the authorities concerned to ensure proper treatment for the injured. He described the incident as “deeply tragic” and said the loss of lives is irreparable. Tarique Rahman expressed sympathy for the bereaved families and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls. “He also ordered an immediate investigation to determine the cause of the accident and to ensure exemplary punishment for those responsible,” the statement added. The fire broke out at the factory near Al Baraka Hospital in the Kadamtali area around 1:00pm, leaving five people dead.

The country has recorded 787 suspected measles cases in the 24 hours till Saturday morning, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). During the period ending at 8:00am, 60 confirmed measles patients were admitted to hospitals, and four suspected measles patients died, according to a PID handout. The total number of suspected measles patients admitted to hospitals has reached 4,628. Of them, 2,654 have already recovered and been discharged. Since March 15, a total of 98 suspected measles patients have died, the handout added.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has said that fuel prices have risen in most countries due to the Middle East conflict, but have not increased in Bangladesh. She said that in many countries fuel prices have doubled, while in the United States they have increased by around 50 percent. Prices have also gone up significantly in countries such as Singapore, Sri Lanka and India. “But fuel prices have not increased in Bangladesh yet. This is the success of the government,” she said while speaking to reporters after visiting Nagarkanda Upazila Health Complex in Faridpur on Saturday afternoon. The state minister said the government is trying to ensure that people from all walks of life can live without hardship during the ongoing conflict. She added that people need to think in the long term. “If we consider the future, some adjustment in fuel prices may be necessary. However, this must be done while ensuring people’s welfare,” she said. Shama Obaed also said the Middle East conflict began after the BNP assumed office and that Bangladeshi expatriates in the region are being affected. She said the government is working round the clock to keep the economy stable and maintain prices of essential goods at a tolerable level. She said Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman had laid the foundation of the country’s foreign policy and was the first to open the labour market in Saudi Arabia. Following that legacy, she said, BNP governments have maintained good relations with Middle Eastern countries. Due to these strong ties, she said, Bangladesh continues to be treated as a friendly country by Middle Eastern nations, including Iran, even during the conflict. “Our expatriates are safe, and we are receiving necessary oil and gas through various channels without disruption,” she added. Expressing dissatisfaction over the condition of Nagarkanda Upazila Health Complex, she said she had visited it earlier and found its condition poor at that time as well. “Even today, the situation is disappointing. It does not meet required standards. There is a lack of necessary equipment and manpower,” she said. Bangladesh's readymade garment (RMG) exports to the United States – its single largest export destination – faced a setback in early 2026, recording an 8.53 percent decline in January and February, compared to the same period in 2025. According to the latest data from the Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA) of the US Department of Commerce, the downturn was marked by a "double blow" of falling prices and reduced shipment volumes. Unit prices for Bangladeshi apparel dropped by 2.47 percent, while the overall export volume (measured in square meter equivalents) fell by 6.21 percent. The decline in Bangladesh's exports reflects a broader contraction in the US apparel import market, which saw a total decline of 13.47 percent in early 2026. Analysts suggest that high inflation, shifting consumer spending patterns, and inventory adjustments by major US retailers have contributed to this global slowdown. Despite the overall market slump, Bangladesh’s regional rivals—Vietnam and Cambodia—managed to post positive growth, signaling intensifying competition for market share. During the same period, Vietnam’s exports to the US grew by 2.86 percent, while Cambodia recorded a significant surge of 18.43 percent. While traditional competitors are gaining ground, China’s massive decline in the US market continues to create a strategic opening. US fashion companies are accelerating their "China Plus One" sourcing strategies due to geopolitical tensions and trade barriers. Industry experts believe that if Bangladesh can improve its efficiency and diversify its product range, it can capture a larger portion of the vacuum left by China. Mohiuddin Rubel, Former Director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Additional Managing Director of Denim Expert Ltd, noted that the current trend highlights the vulnerability of relying solely on basic, low-margin products. "The decline in both volume and unit price is a signal that we must pivot towards high-value-added products and improve our lead times," Rubel said. "While the overall US market is shrinking, the growth of Cambodia and Vietnam shows that buyers are shifting orders to destinations that offer better logistical efficiency or tariff advantages,” he said.

The BNP Standing Committee, the party’s highest policymaking body, sat in a meeting on Saturday night at the party chairman’s Gulshan office. The meeting began around 8:40pm with BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku and Prof AZM Zahid Hossain joined the meeting in person. Two other members Nazrul Islam Khan and Selima Rahman joined the meeting virtually. Another Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore. This is the first meeting of the BNP’s highest policymaking body since the party returned to power through the February 12 national election. A Standing Committee member, requesting anonymity, said the meeting is expected to discuss the country’s latest political situation, the energy crisis and several organisational matters. Its last meeting was held on January 9 at the same venue.

A 30-year-old man was beaten to death by a mob over allegations of theft in Khulna. Victim Didar Sarder, was the son of Binu Sardar, a resident of the Arakandi area in Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj district. Locals said that fish had been stolen every night for the past few days from an enclosure beside Latar Beel under Arangghata Police Station. To catch the thief, local residents began guarding the area. Late on Friday night, Didar entered the enclosure of Nihar Biswas allegedly to steal fish. He was caught by locals and severely beaten on the spot. He was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital in a critical condition around 7am, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. The body was later kept in the morgue. Shahjahan Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Arangghata Police Station, said police reached the spot around 9:30am after receiving information. He said the incident is under investigation and legal action will be taken if the victim’s family files a case.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has said that no news based on speculation should be published without proper fact-checking. He said that various news and information are now being circulated on social media, including YouTube and other digital platforms, which often create confusion. Therefore, news should always be verified before publication to ensure accuracy. The minister made the remarks at an exchange of views meeting with journalists at the Pabna Press Club on Friday night. He also said that Pabna Press Club has a strong tradition in the country and that its sense of unity could serve as an example nationwide. He added that the current government is working to bring journalists together and establish press clubs in every district. The BNP government has already taken steps in this regard, giving high priority to the media. He further said that the government values constructive criticism from the media and is working accordingly. The meeting was chaired by Pabna Press Club President Akhtaruzzaman Akhter. The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) formed its new 11-member central executive committee on Saturday, re-electing AHM Shafiquzzaman as president and Advocate Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan as general secretary. The CAB committee was elected unanimously during its annual general meeting held at its Segunbagicha office. Other key office-bearers elected include Senior Vice President Jamil Chowdhury, Vice President SM Nazer Hossain, Joint Secretary Masudur Rahman Roni, Treasurer Shawkat Ali Khan, Organising Secretary Md Abul Kalam Azad, and Publicity Secretary Anwar Hossain Chowdhury. Anwar Hossain, MA Kader Mondal, and Bahadur Sajeda Akter were elected as executive members. The newly formed executive committee will serve a two-year term. Professor Dr Anwarul Islam served as the chief election commissioner, with Advocate Akbar Hossain and Mostak Ahmad as election commissioners.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized smuggled Indian goods worth nearly Tk 2 crore in separate drives conducted along the Brahmanbaria and Cumilla border areas. According to BGB’s Sultanpur Battalion (60 BGB), the drives were carried out on Saturday based on specific intelligence in border areas of Kasba upazila in Brahmanbaria and Brahmanpara and Adarsha Sadar upazilas in Cumilla. Patrol teams from Khadla BOP in Kasba, Shashidal BOP in Brahmanpara, and Barojwala BOP in Adarsha Sadar conducted the drives separately under the leadership of Battalion Commander Lt Col SM Shariful Islam. During the drives, a pickup vehicle along with a large quantity of smuggled Indian goods was seized. The recovered items include cumin, henna, various cosmetics, sarees, basmati rice, soap, fuchka, fireworks, and different types of medicines. The estimated value of the seized goods is Tk 1,90,66,070. The seized items will be handed over to the concerned customs office following due legal procedures. Lt Col Shariful Islam said BGB remains vigilant in preventing smuggling while ensuring border security, in line with the directives of the BGB Director General. He added that intelligence surveillance and operational activities along the border have been strengthened and such drives will continue.

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase on Saturday approved separate proposals to procure two cargoes of LNG and 1 lakh metric tons of diesel to meet the growing demand for energy in the country amid global geopolitical instability. The approval came from the 14th meeting of the committee held virtually with Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury in the chair, said Cabinet Division officials. The meeting approved a proposal from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division to procure two cargoes of LNG from Aramco Trading Singapore Pte Ltd. Besides, it gave another proposal the go-ahead to import 1 lakh metric tons of 50 PPM Sulphur diesel from Kazakh Gas Processing Plant LLP with around Tk 689.29 crore through DPM method under international purchase.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Saturday approved in principle three separate proposals to procure some 16 lakh metric tons of diesel and 1 lakh metric tons of octane to meet the growing demand for energy in the country amid global geopolitical instability. The approval came from the 8th meeting of the committee held virtually with Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury in the chair. The meeting reviewed three proposals from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division and thus approved those in principle, said Cabinet Division officials. In response to the first proposal, the meeting decided to import 10 lakh metric tons of En590-10 PPM diesel and 1 lakh metric tons of octane (gasoline 95 unladed) from DBS Trading House FZCO through direct procurement method (DPM) under international purchase. The meeting approved another proposal to procure 1 lakh metric tons of 50 PPM sulfur diesel from Maxwell International SPC through direct procurement method under international purchase. It also considered and thus approved a proposal to import 5 lakh metric tons of High Speed Diesel (AGO) from Kazakh Gas Processing Plant LLP through DPM method under international purchase.  

Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain has said each family of those killed in the fire at an unauthorised gas lighter factory in South Keraniganj will receive Tk 2 lakh. He made the announcement after visiting the spot in the Kadamtali Gol Chattar area around 7:30pm on Saturday. Station Officer (Media) of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters Talha bin Zashim told UNB that five bodies have so far been recovered from the burned factory. The fire broke out around 1pm at the tin-shed factory, which was used for manufacturing gas lighters. Seven firefighting units rushed to the scene around 1:16pm after receiving the information and brought the blaze under control around 2:30pm, he added. The fire was completely extinguished at 4:44pm.

Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni on Saturday said the government is committed to curbing tobacco use to safeguard the country’s human resources. “We will try to eliminate tobacco use entirely. If that is not possible, we will at least ensure that its use does not increase. Our greatest asset is our human resources, and protecting them requires strict control of tobacco,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at a policy dialogue in the capital. The dialogue titled ‘Importance of strengthening smoking and tobacco control laws to protect women’s health’ was organised by the Anti-Tobacco Alliance of Women (TABINAJ) in collaboration with Unnayan Bikalper Nitinirdharoni Gobeshona (UBINIG) at the CIRDAP auditorium. Emphasising the urgency of action, the Chief Whip said there is no alternative to tobacco control and called for effective measures to address the issue. Referring to tobacco cultivation, he urged farmers to shift to alternative crops. “My position is clear – why grow tobacco? Cultivate other crops instead,” he said. Moni also cautioned that certain anti-tobacco campaigns may have unintended consequences. Drawing a comparison with past anti-drug campaigns, he noted that such efforts sometimes sparked curiosity among young people about substances like heroin or Yaba. He warned the anti-tobacco activists to be careful about such negative campaigns that may turn into indirect promotion. The Chief Whip said the government has devised a plan to excavate some 20,000 kilometres of canals and plant 25 crore trees to protect the environment. The event began with a video presentation highlighting the severe health risks and damages caused by tobacco use. Speakers at the dialogue strongly called for the Tobacco Control Ordinance 2025 to be enacted into law. Dr Sohel Reza Choudhury, along with leaders of TABINAJ and UBINIG, also spoke at the event.

The Parliament Secretariat Commission has been formed under the chairmanship of Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram. The five-member commission was constituted under Article 7 of the National Parliament Secretariat Act, 1994. A gazette in this regard was published on April 2 last. Four other members of the commission are Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman, Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman and Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.

Farmers can now pay instalments for mechanised agricultural vehicles purchased from Metal Motors through nearby bKash agent points, making payments easier and more secure at the field level. Under a newly signed agreement, Metal Motors will use bKash’s Agent-to-Merchant (A2M) Cash Collection Solution to facilitate instalment collection across the country. Through this system, payments made at agent points will be directly credited to the company’s account as electronic money (e-money). The initiative is expected to reduce financial risks for stakeholders while making the transaction process more efficient in terms of time and cost. The agreement was signed recently at the head office of Metal Motors Limited, attended by senior officials from both organisations. Present from Metal Motors were Managing Director Sadid Jamil, Directors Sarah Jamil and Saad Jamil, and CEO Md. Mizanur Rahman. Representing bKash were Chief Commercial Officer Ali Ahmmed, Head of Business Sales Masrur Chowdhury, and General Manager Md. The Dhaka Stock Exchange PLC has set new office hours and a revised trading schedule in line with the government’s energy-saving measures. The new timings will come into effect from Sunday and remain in force until further notice, according to a press release issued on Saturday. As per the revised schedule, office hours will run from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Trading on the bourse will begin at 10:00am, with the continuous trading session continuing until 1:55pm. The post-closing session will take place from 1:55pm to 2:00pm, while the market will officially close at 4:00pm. The move comes as part of broader efforts to tackle the ongoing energy crisis, with banks and other financial institutions also adjusting their office hours in compliance with the government’s directive.

The benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) declined by 148 points over the week as persistent selling pressure dominated four out of five trading sessions, eroding market capitalisation. According to the DSE’s weekly market pulse, most indices closed lower during the week. The broad index DSEX fell 148 points, while the Shariah-based DSES index dropped 19 points. The blue-chip DS30 index also lost 85 points. However, the SME index advanced by 134 points, reflecting gains in small and medium-sized companies. Market breadth remained negative, with prices falling for 206 issues, while 172 advanced and 12 remained unchanged. Despite the downturn, average daily turnover increased due to heightened selling activity. The DSE recorded an average turnover of Tk 668 crore during the week, up from Tk 531 crore in the previous week, marking a 25.78% rise. Continuous sell-offs led to a nearly 3% decline in market capitalisation over the five trading days. Sector-wise, prices rose in 14 sectors while declined in seven sectors. The banking sector saw a sharp drop of about 38%. Financial institutions declined by 26%, cement by nearly 6%, food and allied by 11%, telecom by 49%, and travel by 7%. On the gaining side, mutual funds posted the highest increase, surging 271%. Engineering rose 145%, paper and printing 157%, and tannery 165%. In terms of turnover, ACME Pesticides Limited topped the chart, followed by Orion Infusion, Summit Alliance Port Limited, Khan Brothers PP Woven Bag Industries Limited, and Brac Bank. In block trading, Al-Arafah Islami Bank PLC led the board with shares worth Tk 18 crore changing hands during the week. IFIC Bank First Mutual Fund emerged as the top performer, delivering a 52% return. In contrast, Far East Finance and Investment Limited was the worst performer, with its return plunging by over 30%.

At least six people were injured seriously in a head-on collision between two buses in Pirojpur municipality on Saturday. According to locals, the accident occurred around noon when a Dhaka-bound Palki Paribahan bus collided with a Molla Travels bus, returning from Charmonai’s Mahfil, in the Ranipur area. Following the collision, the Molla Travels bus lost control and slammed into a roadside tree, leaving the vehicle mangled. Officer-in-Charge of Pirojpur Sadar Police Station Mahmud Hasan said several passengers sustained injuries in the accident and they were immediately taken to the district hospital.

A delegation from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), led by its President Zou Jiayi, met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday. The meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s Office at Tejgaon, said his Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony. Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Economic Affairs Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir were present at the meeting. Zou Jiayi led a three-member delegation during the meeting. She assumed office as President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank on January 16.  

During a Pakistan Super League match on Friday night, Bangladesh’s left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman became the highest wicket-taking left-arm pacer in the history of recognised T20s. Playing for Lahore Qaladars, Mustafizur claimed two wickets against the Multan Sultans to surpass Pakistan's Mohammad Amir, who previously held the record with 414 wickets. The cutter master reached the milestone in 325 matches, significantly fewer than Amir’s 356 appearances. Mustafizur entered the PSL season third on the all-time list for left-arm pacers. He overtook retired Pakistani bowler Wahab Riaz, who finished his career with 413 wickets, during his second match of the tournament against the Karachi Kings. The contest for the top position remains active, as 33-year-old Amir is also competing in the current PSL season for Rawalpindi. Of his 416 overall T20 wickets, 158 were taken in international matches, making Mustafizur the leading T20I wicket-taker for Bangladesh. He secured that national record last September by surpassing left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan. Bangladesh Bank (BB) has initiated steps to launch an Islamic Interbank Money Market by June this year, aiming to improve liquidity management for Shariah-based banks. At present, Islamic banks face difficulties during liquidity shortages as they are unable to participate in the conventional call money market used by traditional banks. The absence of a Shariah-compliant short-term funding mechanism often puts these institutions under financial strain. The new marketplace is expected to provide an alternative financing avenue, making it easier for Islamic banks to trade short-term funds among themselves. In designing the framework for this new market, the central bank has reportedly reviewed and analysed the successful models of Islamic interbank money markets in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Bahrain. A senior BB official said there has been a lack of an effective interbank system for fund transfers specifically tailored for Islamic banks. "Once the new market is operational, banks with surplus liquidity will be able to support those facing deficits. This will play a positive role in stabilising the liquidity situation within the Shariah-based banking sector," he said. While the move has been welcomed, some industry experts emphasise that this is only a partial fix. A former managing director of a private sector Islamic bank observed that while an interbank system is helpful for managing short-term liquidity gaps, it is not a solution for long-term structural issues. He stressed that the central bank must maintain strict monitoring over the fund management of these banks to ensure lasting stability. The introduction of this dedicated money market is seen as a crucial step in modernising Bangladesh’s Islamic banking sector, which currently holds a substantial share of the country's total banking assets.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday held a marathon meeting with top businesses, focusing on improving the investment climate, resolving industry challenges and addressing the ongoing energy crisis. The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon, began around 11:30am and continued for nearly three and a half hours. After the meeting, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury told reporters that a wide range of issues related to trade, commerce and investment were discussed, with business leaders outlining key challenges and offering recommendations. “Problems and challenges facing the business sector were discussed, and ways to address them were explored. Business leaders shared their views,” he said. He said many issues have been resolved, while others remain pending and will be settled through further discussions. Replying to a question on investment, the minister said the meeting aimed to create a more investment-friendly environment. “The Prime Minister listened to the business leaders to understand where the barriers to investment lie. He wants to resolve these issues quickly,” he said, adding that some concerns were addressed on the spot, while others will be taken up in follow-up discussions. Vessel carrying 34,000 tonnes of diesel arrives at Ctg port  Khosru also said discussions were held on opening closed factories and industrial units. “We discussed how to restart factories that have been shut down, including state-owned ones. We hope many of these projects can be revived,” he said. In response to a question on energy support, he said Bangladesh is receiving assistance from multilateral bodies. “We are receiving cooperation from various multilateral organisations,” he said. Top business leaders present at the meeting included representatives from DBL Group, Apex Footwear, Pran-RFL Group, Pacific Jeans, Bay Group, Incepta Pharmaceuticals, Runner Group, Rangs Group and ACI. Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, State Minister for Power and Energy Anindya Islam Amit, and Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Ashik Chowdhury, among others, were present. Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon said Tarique Rahman joined office around 10:46am despite it being a public holiday.

Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon on Saturday said classes in urban areas will be conducted through a blended system – both offline and online – to help conserve electricity amid the war-induced global crisis. “We will run classes in urban areas in both offline and online modes to save power,” he said while speaking at a view-exchange meeting with centre secretaries of the Cumilla Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board, as well as technical and madrasah boards of the region, at the Cumilla Shilpakala Academy. The minister said a meeting with guardians will be held on Sunday to finalise the plan and gather feedback. Highlighting the broader shift in the education system, he said the sector is moving towards a “penless and paperless” model, adding that the government aims to advance in line with modern information technology. Addressing the issue of exam malpractice, Milon said adopting unfair means has existed since 1972, but stressed that it will be strictly prevented this time. “We stopped it in 2001-2006, and we will not allow it again,” he said, urging teachers to play a proactive role in eliminating it completely. Cumilla Education Board Chairman Md Shamsul Islam delivered the welcome speech at the event. MPs Manirul Haque Chowdhury, Md Mobasher Alam Bhuiyan, Md Abul Kalam, Md Jashim Uddin and MA Mannan, along with Technical Education Board Chairman Ruhul Amin, Madrasah Education Board Chairman Miah Md Nurul Haque, Deputy Commissioner of the district Reza Hasan and Superintendent of Police Md Anisuzzaman, among others, were present.

Energy prices may have to be increased if the ongoing Middle East conflict becomes prolonged although such a move could trigger inflationary pressure, energy expert Prof Dr M Tamim  said on Saturday. He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a shadow parliament titled ‘Energy crisis can be addressed through strengthening domestic system’, organised by Debate for Democracy at the FDC in the capital. Prof Tamim said Bangladesh has become vulnerable to global supply disruptions due to past policies that increased import dependency while neglecting domestic energy development. He said before the Middle East crisis the country had fuel reserves for only two days , yet there was no panic, whereas now public anxiety persists despite reserves lasting between 7 and 15 days. “People are panic-buying petrol and octane beyond their needs although the real concern should be diesel supply,” he said. He also alleged that past misinformation regarding fuel reserves and supply has eroded public trust in official data. Highlighting regional comparisons, he said fuel prices in Pakistan are nearly double those in Bangladesh and any price hike domestically could lead to significant inflation. However, he cautioned that continuing subsidies indefinitely would not be sustainable for the government. Prof Tamim said  the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) made consistent annual profits of over Tk 3,000 crore in recent years, accumulating around Tk 30,000 crore over the past decade, but failed to retain sufficient reserves for crisis management. Presiding over the event, Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron said flawed policies in the past have weakened the country’s energy security, which is now being exposed amid global instability. He criticised past energy agreements including quick rental power arrangements and power import deals, saying these should be reviewed to ensure national interest. Kiron said although the government is currently providing a daily subsidy of around Tk 167 crore on fuel to keep prices stable, there are plans to adjust prices in line with the global market. He urged people to avoid panic buying and hoarding, and called for stronger monitoring by intelligence agencies to prevent any attempts to create artificial instability in the fuel market. In the debate competition debaters from State University of Bangladesh emerged winners, defeating Bangladesh University of Business and Technology. At the end of the programme, trophies, crests and certificates were distributed among the participants.

Three more children, showing symptoms consistent with measles, died at the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) in the past 24 hours till Saturday noon, raising the death toll at the hospital to 38 this year. Hospital Spokesperson Dr Shankar K Biswas said the children, aged between five and seven, died while receiving treatment at the hospital. During the same period, 25 new patients were admitted with measles-like symptoms, while three were discharged after recovery, he said. A total of 149 patients, including four adults, with such symptoms are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. So far, 377 patients have been admitted with measles-like symptoms and 38 of them have died. Meanwhile, Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton and Deputy Commissioner of the district Kazi Shahidul Islam visited the hospital’s paediatric ward and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on Saturday to assess the situation and treatment facilities. Speaking on the occasion, Riton said the government is committed to ensuring proper treatment for measles patients and increasing ICU capacity. He added that the city corporation is also extending support in various ways. The RCC administrator said regular vaccination drives are ongoing across all 30 wards of the city corporation, with 8,000 doses of measles vaccine currently in stock. Vaccination will be conducted at 64 centres starting on Sunday.

A 14-year-old student drowned while bathing in a pond at Rajarbagh Police Lines in the capital on Saturday afternoon. The deceased was Sakibul Hasan, an eighth-grade student of Rajarbagh Police Lines School and College and son of Abdul Karim of Nai Gari Gari area under Shahjahanpur thana in Bogura district. Sakibul was rescued unconscious around 2 pm  and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) emergency department where the duty doctors declared him dead, said his father Abdul Karim. He drowned in the pond while bathing with friends, he added. Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp in-charge Inspector Md. Faruk said the body has been kept in the hospital morgue.

An eight-bed ward for patients infected with measles has been opened at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) in the capital as cases are rising across the country. BMU Director (Hospital) Brigadier General Irteka Rahman on Saturday said the ward has been set up on the first floor of C Block to provide treatment for measles patients. A screening centre for measles has also been launched at the hospital. Irteka Rahman along with Deputy Director (Hospital) Dr Mohammad Abu Naser and other officials recently visited the measles ward. Currently, four patients are admitted to the ward. A monitoring cell has also been constituted to oversee the measles situation at the hospital. In addition, another screening centre will be operated at the No. 2 Outpatient Department (OPD) for suspected OPD patients. BMU authorities have also decided to establish an extended isolated ward on the first floor of F Block to manage additional patients if necessary.

Five people were killed as a fire raged though at an unauthorised  gas lighter factory in Kadamtali Gol Chattar area of South Keraniganj on Saturday afternoon. Station Officer Talha bin Zashim of the FSCD headquarter media cell, told UNB that so far five bodies have been recovered. The fire started around 1 pm at the tin-shed factory used for manufacturing gas lighters. Seven firefighting units rushed to the scene around 1:16 pm after receiving the information and brought the blaze under control around 2:30 pm, he said.

Bangladesh Bank has announced revised office and transaction hours for scheduled banks across the country in view of the ongoing fuel and electricity situation. According to a circular issued on Saturday, banks will remain open from Sunday to Thursday, with office hours from 10 am to 5 pm while transaction hours for clients will be from 10 am to 3 pm. Banking operations will continue from Sunday under the adjusted schedule until further instructions. Weekly holidays will remain unchanged on Friday and Saturday. The central bank said branches operating in port, customs and important economic zones will continue their activities as per existing special arrangements to ensure uninterrupted trade and business operations. The directive has been issued under the authority of the Bank Company Act, 1991.

Malaysian ship Shan Gang Fa Jian carrying 34,000 tons of diesel has arrived at Chittagong Port. Syed Refayet Hamim, secretary of Chittagong Port Authority, said the vessel reached the Kutubdia Channel in the Bay of Bengal on Friday night. According to the ship’s local agent, Pride Shipping Lines, the tanker arrived at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port on Saturday morning. Earlier on Friday at 2 pm, another vessel from Singapore, Yan Jing He, carrying 27,300 tons of diesel, berthed at Dolphin Jetty-6 of Padma Oil. The ship was scheduled to arrive at the port’s outer anchorage later that night. Nazrul Islam, managing partner of Pride Shipping Lines, said, "Shan Gang Fa Jian has already reached Kutubdia. It is carrying just over 34,000 tons of diesel from Malaysia and is scheduled to berth at the port on Saturday."

State Minister for Planning Zonayed Saki has stepped down as chief coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon, the party announced on Saturday. Dewan Abdur Rashid Nilu has been made acting chief coordinator of the party, said Executive Coordinator Abul Hasan Rubel at a press conference held at the party’s Hatirpool central office. Nilu will serve in the role until a special council is convened to choose new leadership, he said.

The government will launch an emergency measles-rubella (MR) vaccination campaign in 30 high-risk upazilas across the country from Sunday (April 5) to control the outbreak of measles, announced Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain.  “The campaign will be inaugurated simultaneously at various areas across the country at 9 am tomorrow. Ministers concerned will participate in the inauguration events in different districts,” he said at a press briefing at the ministry. There is an increased outbreak of measles in some areas of Bangladesh which is affecting young children the most and the government is addressing the situation with utmost priority, said the minister. The minister said the National Immunisation Technical Advisory Group (NITAG) in consultation with national and international experts recommended the urgent vaccination campaign to control transmission quickly and protect children at risk. “All children under five years of age will be included in this campaign, regardless of whether they have received the vaccine before. We want to ensure that no child remains unprotected,” he said. The vaccination program will be implemented in phases. It will begin in the 30 high-risk upazilas and later expand nationwide and the target is to complete the campaign by May 21, before the holy Eid-ul-Azha, said the Health Minister. The minister urged the parents to bring all children under five to the designated vaccination centers. “Children with fever or illness should receive the vaccine after recovery.” He added that children affected or suspected to be affected by measles will also receive vitamin ‘A’ capsules to reduce complications from the disease. “The preparations, including vaccine procurement, storage, cold chain management, and health worker training, have already been completed,” the minister said. The vaccines being used are safe and effective and there is no need for panic, he said. “If vaccinations are administered on time, we can bring the measles outbreak under control.”  

Whip M Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu on Saturday said democracy in the country has been restored through 17 years of struggle and sacrifice, urging all to remain vigilant in protecting it. “Democracy achieved through blood must be safeguarded at any cost,” he said while addressing as the chief guest an Eid reunion and felicitation programme organised by the Natore District Journalists’ Association, Dhaka, at the Jatiya Press Club. Dulu said the current government is committed to reforms in line with the July National Charter, adding that necessary changes can be implemented through parliamentary debate. He also noted that the government remains active in ensuring people's voting rights and freedom of expression. Highlighting development issues, the whip stressed the need for collective efforts to transform Natore into a prosperous district and to work for the welfare of the people. Nature-3 MP Md Anwar - ul - Islam and Natore-4 MP Md Abdul Aziz also spoke at the event moderated by former health secretary Saidur Rahman. At the programme, distinguished individuals and residents from Natore raised demands for the development of educational institutions, roads and overall infrastructure in the district. The organisers presented the chief guest with a crest and a commemorative memento. The event was attended by leaders and members of the journalists' association, eminent personalities from Natore, and media professionals.  

A citizens’ platform has expressed deep concern over the recommendation of a special parliamentary committee to repeal several key reform ordinances, including those related to Supreme Court appointments and administrative independence. In a statement issued on behalf of the Citizen Coalition on Saturday, its representative Fahim Mashrur said the organisation is “deeply concerned” about the report published on April 2 by a special parliamentary committee tasked with reviewing 133 ordinances promulgated during the interim government period. The committee reportedly recommended scrapping four ordinances, notably the Supreme Court Judges Appointment Ordinance-2025 and the Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance-2025, both of which were widely seen as key to strengthening judicial independence. The coalition said these reforms had long been awaited and reflected broad expectations across society. "Any move to cancel them raises serious questions about the government's commitment to ensuring the independence of the judiciary, institutional balance, and the principle of separation of powers," the statement said. Referring to the ruling BNP’s previously declared commitments, including its 31-point state reform agenda, 2026 election manifesto and the nationally endorsed July National Charter, the coalition argued that the proposed repeal appears inconsistent with those pledges. It also noted that more than two-thirds of voters supported such reforms in the 2026 referendum, warning that reversing course will undermine the clearly expressed will of the people. The statement further emphasised that demands for judicial independence and separation from the executive have been consistently raised over decades by political parties, human rights groups, civil society, and the legal community –forming a broad national consensus. The Citizen Coalition urged the government to reconsider the decision and uphold its declared commitments by preserving reforms that strengthen the judiciary's institutional autonomy. "Any change to the administrative structure of the judiciary must reinforce, not weaken, its independence," the statement added.

Three children died in Kushtia with symptoms of measles within 24 hours till Saturday morning. The deceased were identified as eight-month-old Ibrahim, son of Chanchal Hossain of Daulatpur upazila,  Afran, son of Al Amin from Bhadalia village and five-month-old Aiza, daughter of Momin of Kushtia district town. Among the deceased, Ibrahim, died around 10:30 pm on Friday at Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital, Aiza died around midnight at Kushtia Medical College Hospital and Afran died around 6 am on Friday at the same hospital with similar symptoms, said Dr Hossain Imam, resident medical officer (RMO) of Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital. Deputy Director of Kushtia Medical College Hospital Dr AHM Anwarul Islam said the number of patients with measles symptoms keeps rising across the district. Besides, dedicated measles corners have been set up in hospitals including Kushtia Medical College Hospital, he added. However, due to the increasing number of cases many children are being treated in general wards, leading to a shortage of beds. According to the Civil Surgeon’s Office, more than 300 children have been admitted to different hospitals in the district with measles symptoms of which at least 75 have recovered. Civil Surgeon Sheikh Mohammad Kamal Hossain said a shortage of vaccines, lack of awareness and movement of people from other districts are contributing to the spread of the disease. Meanwhile, isolation corners have been opened in all hospitals in the district for infected children and vaccination drives will begin as soon as vaccines become available, he added. Authorities have urged parents to remain cautious and seek medical attention promptly if children show symptoms.

Beneath the quiet agricultural landscape of Pirganj upazila in Rangpur lies a long-standing but largely untapped story of coal reserves and iron-rich mineral deposits, now drawing renewed attention from policymakers and experts. Recent reviews of historical data, alongside ongoing exploration, have highlighted the significant potential of the Khalashpir coalfield and surrounding areas. However, officials said comprehensive feasibility studies are still needed before any commercial extraction can begin. A resource identified decades ago Interest in Khalashpir dates back to 1959–62  when the then Geological Survey of Pakistan first identified coal potential in the Gondwana Basin during exploratory work in the area. Further exploration by Geological Survey of Bangladesh (GSB) in 1989–90 involved drilling four wells across a 25-square-kilometre area. Three of these confirmed the presence of high-quality bituminous coal at depths between 257 and 451 metres. Initial estimates indicated around 143 million metric tonnes of coal within a 2.52-square-kilometre zone. Later studies suggested significantly larger reserves, according to official documents gleaned by UNB. In 2006, a study by CJMDC estimated approximately 705.69 million tonnes of coal across a 7.62-square-kilometre area. Around the same time, Hosaf International Ltd., in collaboration with a consortium including Shandong-Ludi and Xinwen Mining Group, conducted a techno-economic feasibility study after obtaining a licence from the Bureau of Mineral Development. During 2005–06, the consortium drilled 11 additional boreholes, leading to a preliminary estimate of about 685 million metric tonnes of coal spread over 12.25 square kilometres in Khalashpir coalfield. Need for updated feasibility assessment Despite these promising findings, no commercial extraction has yet taken place. In 2009, the Hydrocarbon Unit reviewed earlier studies with technical assistance from UK-based International Mining Consultants Group Consulting Limited. The review identified limitations in previous assessments and recommended a comprehensive, full-scale feasibility study. Officials say such a study remains essential to evaluate environmental, technical and economic viability before any final decision is made. “Existing data are encouraging, but not sufficient for commercial development,” an official said. “A detailed and updated feasibility study is required.” Iron-rich mineral potential In addition to coal, Pirganj has also shown promise for iron-rich mineral deposits. Geological exploration in Shanerhat area during 1965–66 revealed the presence of metal-rich ores. Subsequent drilling by the GSB in 1999–2000 and again in the 2023–24 fiscal year confirmed the presence of iron and other metallic elements through preliminary analysis. A new exploration well is currently being drilled in the Chhota Paharpur (Shanerhat) area to determine the extent of the resource and assess its suitability for commercial extraction. Experts say further drilling and detailed laboratory analysis will be necessary to confirm the quantity and quality of these deposits. Balancing development and sustainability While the findings offer potential opportunities for reducing import dependence and strengthening the energy and industrial sectors, experts stress the need for careful planning. Coal mining, particularly in densely populated and agricultural regions, poses environmental and social challenges including land use, water management and displacement risks. Similarly, any development of iron ore resources will require strong regulatory oversight and environmental safeguards. Officials emphasised that future decisions will be guided by scientific evidence and sustainability considerations. “The potential is significant, but development must be responsible and well-planned,” an energy sector official said.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has denied any involvement in a reported drone attack on the US embassy in Riyadh on March 3, instead blaming Israel for the incident. The statement came after The Wall Street Journal reported that the attack caused more extensive damage than Saudi authorities had acknowledged. While Saudi Arabia’s Defence Ministry described the incident as a limited fire with minor damage, the report claimed the blaze lasted for hours and resulted in significant destruction, reports Al Jazeera. Rejecting the report, the IRGC said the attack “has absolutely nothing to do with the Iranian armed forces,” adding that, given Israel’s regional strategy, it was “certainly carried out by Zionists.” The IRGC also warned Muslim countries about what it described as the “Zionist regime’s sedition in the region,” urging neighboring states to remain vigilant against what it called an “American-Zionist” effort to destabilize the region.

Vietnam’s economic growth slowed in the first quarter of the year, reflecting mounting pressure from higher fuel prices. The country’s gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by 7.83 percent in the January–March period, down from 8.46 percent growth recorded in the previous quarter, according to the National Statistics Office. Although Vietnam continues to rank among the world’s faster-growing economies, the moderation highlights the strain rising energy costs are placing on both consumers and businesses, reports Al Jazeera . Like other Asian economies dependent on fossil fuels, Vietnam has been significantly affected by the impact of Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route that typically handles about one-fifth of global oil supplies. The Southeast Asian nation imports around 85 percent of its crude oil from the Middle East, with nearly all of it sourced from Kuwait.

Pakistan’s Punjab province has introduced free public transport services. The decision was announced by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz after the federal government revealed a similar plan for Islamabad. “I encourage everyone to make full use of these facilities and choose public transport for a more convenient, affordable, and sustainable way to travel,” Nawaz said in a post on X late on Friday, shortly after Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated that the federal government would pay for public transport in the capital. Earlier in the week, the Australian states of Victoria and Tasmania also declared they would remove public transport fares as a way to motivate people to save fuel.

Science and technology are not only drivers of economic growth but also key pillars of national security, sustainable development and human welfare, said Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, and Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam on Saturday. “The government is working to build a knowledge-based and innovation-driven Bangladesh placing emphasis on expanding STEM education, commercialising research, increasing investment in advanced technologies including AI and strengthening the startup ecosystem,” said the minister after inaugurating the two-day 6th Young Scientist Congress in the capital. The congress themed ‘Young Scientists for Artificial Intelligence’ is being held at the National Science and Technology Complex in Agargaon. Bangladesh Academy of Sciences organised the event. Young scientists from across the country are taking part in the event showcasing their research, innovations and future prospects in the field of artificial intelligence. The minister said the participation of young scientists in the congress would further accelerate the country’s scientific advancement. Addressing the young participants, he said they would lead the future and must contribute to national development through research, innovation and creativity. He also urged them to apply their knowledge and experience for the country after completing higher education abroad. Science and Technology Ministry Secretary Md Anwar Hossain said the government has taken initiatives to establish a national AI institute prioritising artificial intelligence development in the country. He said efforts are underway to formulate integrated policies to ensure data security, management and effective use of AI in agriculture, education, healthcare and industry. Emphasis is also being placed on STEM education, nanotechnology, biotechnology and semiconductor development, alongside linking innovation with markets through the “Innovation to Market” initiative, he added. University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Dr Mamun Ahmed said the world is now in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution where artificial intelligence is transforming life and workplaces and young Bangladeshi scientists are the driving force behind this change. The congress features technical sessions, research presentations, panel discussions and technology exhibitions, with participation from universities, research institutions and technology-related organisations. The inaugural session was presided over by Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Vice President Prof Dr Z N Tahmida Begum, said a PID handout. Teachers, researchers, young scientists, students and experts from across the country attended the programme.  

A man was killed as a Dhaka North City Corporation garbage truck hit his motorbike in Banasree area of the capital on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Delwar Hossain, son of Abdul Hakim of Omar Ali Lane in the capital. The garbage truck crashed into the motorbike carrying Delwar in front of Singer Showroom around 9:20 am, leaving him dead on the spot, said Shafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Khilgaon Police Station. On information, police recovered the body and arrested the driver.  

Appreciating renowned photographer Nasir Ali Mamun's photography, Ambassador of France to Bangladesh Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet has said literature and arts have always held a central place in cultural life, shaping thought, identity, and dialogue across generations in France, as in Bangladesh. "In the hands of a photographer such as Nasir Ali Mamun, photography becomes not only an artistic expression but also an act of cultural preservation," said the Ambassador, adding that his black-and-white portraits reveal a remarkable mastery of light and shadow. The inaugural ceremony of Mamun’s 66th solo exhibition was held at Alliance Française de Dhaka on Friday featuring rare portraits and moments of eminent poets Shamsur Rahman and Al Mahmud. Editor and Publisher of Prothom Alo Matiur Rahman and artist Monirul Islam were, among others, present. "Through simplicity of composition and careful framing, he invites us to look beyond appearances and to encounter the inner world of his subjects," the French Ambassador said. He said these are not merely photographs; they are quiet and powerful moments of reflection. "This is especially evident in his portraits of two eminent poets, Shamsur Rahman and Al Mahmud. Through his lens, they appear not only as major literary figures, but as deeply human—thoughtful, sensitive, and introspective," said the envoy. He thinks this exhibition creates a dialogue between literature and visual art, between word and image, allowing them to experience poetry in a new and intimate manner. The relationship between Mamun and Alliance Française de Dhaka is also particularly meaningful. The Alliance continues to serve as a vital space for cultural exchange, creativity, and intellectual engagement, said the French envoy. A mild to moderate heat wave is sweeping over different parts of the country including Dhaka and it may continue, Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said on Saturday. “A mild to moderate heat wave is sweeping over Rajshahi and Khulna divisions and the districts of Dhaka, Faridpur, Gopalganj, Manikganj, Narayanganj, Rangamati, Chandpur, Barishal, Patuakhali and it may continue,” said a Met office bulletin. Besides, rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind and lightning flashes is likely to occur at one or two places over Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, it said. Weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country. Day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged over the country. The highest temperature of 39.7°C was recorded in Chuadanga on Friday. A trough of low lies over West Bengal and adjoining area. Seasonal low lies over South Bay.  

A Jubo Dal activist was shot and injured in a reported gun attack by some miscreants in Nayabazar Park area of Old Dhaka on Friday night. The victim was identified as Russel, 31, an activist of Kotwali unit Jubo Dal son of Mohammad Ali of Shyampur area of the capital. Ripon Das, a friend of Russel, said a group of miscreants appeared at Nayabazar Park around 9 pm and opened fire on Russel while he was sitting there, leaving him injured. He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) from where he was shifted to a private hospital in Dhanmondi, said Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of DMCH police camp. Russel suffered bullet injuries on his left chest, he said.    

For decades land-related services in Bangladesh have been synonymous with long queues, opaque procedures and the pervasive influence of middlemen. From mutation delays to disputes over records, the system has often tested citizens’ patience and at times their finances. Now, the Ministry of Land is attempting a major reset. Through a comprehensive “Digitalised Land Management” initiative, the government is rolling out a series of reforms aimed at simplifying land services, ensuring transparency and making the system more citizen-friendly. At the heart of this transformation is the digitisation of the mutation process — a crucial step in updating land ownership records. Citizens can now apply for mutation through the land.gov.bd portal and track the status of their applications in real time, eliminating the need for repeated visits to land offices. Officials told UNB that the changes are designed to reduce human intervention, long considered a key source of delays and irregularities. A strict 28-day deadline has been introduced for completing mutation applications. Failure to meet this timeline without valid justification could lead to accountability measures against the responsible officials — a move that signals a shift towards time-bound public service delivery. To further enhance transparency, digital Khatiyans (Records of Rights) with QR codes are now being issued. These can be verified instantly online, reducing the risk of forgery and disputes over authenticity. The reforms also extend to financial transactions. Mutation fees can now be paid through Mobile Financial Services (MFS), making the process cashless. Officials said this will significantly curb opportunities for bribery at the local level. “Cash transactions with land offices have long been a source of harassment. Going digital effectively closes that door,” said a senior ministry official. Besides, once a mutation is completed, land holdings are generated automatically, while corrections to Khatiyans are processed through the system with minimal manual handling. Applicants are kept informed through automated SMS updates — a small but significant step towards improving user experience. The digital push is not limited to records and transactions. The government has launched the Bangladesh Digital Survey (BDS) using drones and advanced technology to create accurate land maps. Officials expect this to reduce boundary disputes — one of the most common triggers of litigation. Land disputes remain a major burden on Bangladesh’s judicial system. Around 80 percent of all civil and criminal cases are land-related. Nearly one in seven households — roughly four million families — is entangled in such disputes, many of which drag on for years, even decades. By improving accuracy in land records and mapping, authorities hope to address the root causes of these conflicts. Access to land information is also being expanded. Citizens can now view Khatiyans for any mouza online and request certified copies via post for a fixed fee, bypassing brokers who have traditionally dominated the process. However, officials acknowledge that not all citizens are digitally equipped. To bridge this gap, the government has introduced the “Land Service Support Guidelines 2025,” paving the way for around 900 private-sector-led service centres across the country. These centres assist people in filing digital applications for a nominal charge. Accountability mechanisms are also being strengthened. Under the “Land Service Complaint Management Guidelines 2026,” citizens can file complaints online or seek assistance through a 24/7 hotline. A dedicated Citizen Service Centre has already been set up at Bhumi Bhaban in Tejgaon, with plans to expand similar facilities nationwide. Despite the ambitious scope of the reforms, challenges remain — from ensuring digital literacy to maintaining system integrity across rural areas. Yet, for many citizens long frustrated by the complexities of land administration the shift signals hope. Jahanara Begum, a widow and a resident of Shantibagh, said, “I had to visit the land office more than 7/8 times for mutation purposes but my file did not move until I sought help from an influential person.” “I have seen how ordinary people suffer there. I hope digitisation will help ease public suffering,” she added. The government’s stated goal is clear: to build a system where land services are accessible, efficient and free from harassment and where the role of middlemen is reduced to zero. Whether this digital transformation can fully deliver on that promise will depend on its implementation. But for now, it marks a significant step towards modernising one of the country’s most problematic public service sectors.    

Three people were killed in separate road accidents in Jatrabari and Wari areas of the capital on Saturday. In Jatrabari, two people, including a rickshaw puller, were killed when a truck hit a rickshaw at Mirhajirbagh in the Jatrabari area of the capital early Saturday. The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately. The accident occurred around 2:30 am when the speeding truck hit the rickshaw carrying a passenger, leaving both the passenger and the rickshaw puller injured, said Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) police camp. They were later taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared them dead. Police arrested the truck driver and seized the vehicle. In Wari, an unidentified young man, aged about 25, was killed after being hit by an unknown vehicle in front of Bangabhaban in the capital early Saturday. The accident occurred around 3:30 am when the unknown vehicle knocked down the young man, leaving him injured, said Mainuddin, sub-inspector of Wari Police Station. Later, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared him dead around 4 am.

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck parts of northern and eastern Afghanistan and western Pakistan late Friday, leaving at least eight people dead in Afghanistan, officials said. The tremor, centered in the Hindu Kush about 150 kilometers east of the city of Kunduz, was confirmed by international seismic monitoring agencies. According to Hafizullah Basharat, a spokesman for the Kabul governor, the fatalities occurred when a house collapsed on the outskirts of Kabul, killing eight members of the same family and injuring a child. Kabul lies around 290 kilometers from the epicenter. No immediate reports of casualties or damage were received from areas closer to the quake’s origin, which is located in a remote region where communication delays are common. The earthquake struck at a depth of more than 180 kilometers, allowing it to be felt across a wide area of both countries. In Pakistan, tremors were reported in cities including Islamabad, Peshawar, Chitral, Swat and Shangla, though no casualties or damage were immediately reported. Afghanistan’s Health Ministry said medical teams in Kabul and other provinces had been placed on alert following the quake. The region is known for frequent seismic activity, with devastating earthquakes recorded in recent years. In August last year, a powerful quake killed more than 2,200 people in eastern Afghanistan, while another in November left dozens dead and hundreds injured in the north. Afghanistan’s vulnerability to such disasters is compounded by widespread poverty and fragile infrastructure, particularly in rural areas where homes are often built from mud and wood and lack resilience against strong tremors.  

Astronauts aboard Artemis II have captured striking images of Earth as they continue their historic journey toward the moon. NASA released the crew’s first transmitted photos on Friday, about a day and a half after launch — marking the first human mission toward the moon in more than 50 years. One image, taken by mission commander Reid Wiseman, shows a curved section of Earth through the spacecraft window. Another reveals the full planet, its blue oceans streaked with swirling white clouds and even a faint green aurora visible from space. “It’s remarkable to think that everyone on Earth, except the four astronauts, is captured in that image,” said NASA official Lakiesha Hawkins, noting that the mission is progressing smoothly. By Friday afternoon, the four-member crew — three Americans and one Canadian — had traveled more than 110,000 miles (180,000 kilometers) from Earth and were steadily closing in on the moon, with about 150,000 miles (240,000 kilometers) remaining. They are expected to reach the lunar vicinity on Monday. Flying aboard the Orion spacecraft, the astronauts will circle the moon before making a return journey to Earth without landing. The spacecraft was set on its trajectory after a key engine burn shortly after launch. Following a repositioning maneuver by Mission Control, the astronauts were treated to a breathtaking view of the entire Earth illuminated in their windows, complete with visible northern lights. “It was the most spectacular moment, and it stopped all of us in our tracks,” Wiseman said. Thousands of Catholic faithful marked Good Friday across Latin America with vibrant processions and ceremonies recreating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In Bolivia, President Rodrigo Paz joined Good Friday events in the southern city of Tarija. In the capital, La Paz, processions featuring hooded penitents and military bands moved through the streets, with participants carrying representations of the Holy Sepulcher. Dhaka has ranked 12th on the list of cities with the worst air quality with an AQI score of 121 at 9:24 am this morning. Today's air was classified as ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, referring to a health threat, according to the AQI index. Thailand’s Chiang Mai, Egypt’s Cairo and Nepal’s Kathmandu, occupied the first, second and third spots on the list, with AQI scores of 251, 196 and 174, respectively. When the AQI value for particle pollution is between 50 and 100, air quality is considered "moderate", usually sensitive individuals should consider limiting prolonged outdoor exertion, between 101 and 150, air quality is considered "unhealthy for sensitive groups", between 150 and 200 is "unhealthy", between 201 and 300 is said to be "very unhealthy", while a reading of 301+ is considered "hazardous", posing serious health risks to residents. The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is and what associated health effects might be a concern for them. The AQI in Bangladesh is based on five pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2, and ozone. Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution issues. Its air quality usually turns unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon. As per World Health Organization, air pollution kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year, mainly due to increased mortality from stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections.  

A rapidly spreading wildfire fueled by strong winds in Southern California triggered evacuation orders and warnings Friday as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. The Springs Fire ignited around 11 a.m. and expanded to roughly 5.47 square miles (14.17 square kilometers) by evening, with crews beginning to make progress in containing it. Authorities said the cause of the fire, burning east of Moreno Valley in Riverside County, remains under investigation. The number of homes affected by evacuation orders or warnings was not immediately known. The blaze erupted in a populated, though not densely settled, unincorporated area near Moreno Valley, a city of about 200,000 people located roughly 10 miles (16 kilometers) southeast of Riverside and 64 miles (103 kilometers) east of Los Angeles. “It’s windy out there,” said Maggie Cline De La Rosa, a public information officer for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection in Riverside County. Alex Izaguirre, a spokesperson for Cal Fire Riverside County, said gusty conditions were spreading smoke across the region, prompting concern among residents in nearby communities who could see and smell it. The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for the valleys of San Bernardino and Riverside counties through Saturday afternoon, warning of gusts reaching up to 50 mph (80 kph). “Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result,” the advisory said.  

Bahrain has intensified a sweeping crackdown on dissent as its conflict with Iran deepens, with activists and families accusing authorities of reviving harsh tactics used during the 2011 Arab Spring uprising. The case of Mohamed al-Mousawi, a Shiite Muslim who died in custody last month, has become a flashpoint in the Sunni-ruled, Shiite-majority kingdom, which hosts the US Navy’s 5th Fleet. Al-Mousawi was detained in March as Bahrain came under missile attacks from Iran. Days later, his family was called to collect his body from a military hospital. Relatives said the 32-year-old, who had previously been imprisoned and was saving to start a business, showed signs of severe abuse, including slash marks, bruising and injuries on the soles of his feet. Bahrain’s Interior Ministry said al-Mousawi had been arrested on suspicion of spying for Iran — an allegation denied by his family — and dismissed images of his injuries as “inaccurate and misleading.” Authorities said the country is acting to protect national security and rejected claims of sectarian bias. Allegations of torture Al-Mousawi had served around 11 years of a 21-year sentence on charges including arson and belonging to a terrorist cell before being released in 2024 under a royal amnesty. According to relatives and a family friend, he disappeared on March 19 after attending prayers with two others who also remain missing. His body was returned on March 27. Witnesses who saw the body alleged signs of torture, including burns and injuries consistent with whipping. A forensic expert with the New York-based Physicians for Human Rights said the wounds described were consistent with blunt force trauma and possible torture. The Interior Ministry said al-Mousawi had been held by the National Security Agency, whose arrest powers were reinstated in 2017 after being curtailed following the 2011 unrest. A death certificate listed the cause of death as a heart attack, though his family said he had no known preexisting conditions. War heightens tensions Rights groups say al-Mousawi’s death comes amid a broader crackdown targeting Bahrain’s Shiite community since Israel and the US launched military operations against Iran on Feb. 28. Authorities have arrested dozens of people during the conflict for filming military activity, participating in protests, expressing support for Iran or allegedly sharing sensitive information. Activists say the measures echo a long-running campaign to suppress dissent that peaked in 2011, when Bahrain’s ruling Al Khalifa family, backed by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, crushed pro-democracy protests. “It remains to be seen how far the government will go,” said Bahraini activist Maryam al-Khawaja. “What we’re seeing now is more heavy-handed than in recent years.” The government said its actions are a “direct and proportionate response” to Iranian attacks and rejected accusations of sectarian persecution. Security concerns and arrests Since the war began, at least 41 people — including migrant workers — have been detained for sharing images of what authorities described as Iranian attacks or for expressing sympathy for Iran. Some face charges including treason, which can carry life imprisonment or the death penalty. Bahrain says it has been targeted by more than 600 Iranian drone and missile strikes, which have killed at least two people and damaged key infrastructure, including a desalination plant, an oil refinery and an aluminum smelter. Iranian forces have also targeted the US Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters in the country. Videos circulating online show some demonstrators expressing support for Iran and acts of unrest, including arson and attacks on property. Fears of harsher punishment In a separate case, 21-year-old Hussein Fatiil was detained shortly after posting a video from a protest outside the US Embassy, where he and a friend were seen waving a poster of Iran’s supreme leader. His father said the two were taken by plainclothes officers and later charged with multiple offenses, including misuse of social media, inciting hatred and treason. “The charges are extremely serious and exaggerate what happened,” his father said, adding that the protest had been peaceful. He expressed fears that his son could face the harshest penalties, including death.  

Iran shot down two US military planes in separate attacks Friday, with one service member rescued and at least one missing, in a dramatic escalation nearly five weeks after the war began. It was the first time US aircraft have been downed in the conflict and came just two days after President Donald Trump said in a national address that the US has “beaten and completely decimated Iran” and was “going to finish the job, and we’re going to finish it very fast.” One fighter jet was shot down in Iran, officials said. A US crew member from that plane was rescued, but a second was missing, and a US military search-and-rescue operation was underway. Neither the White House nor the Pentagon released public information about the downed planes. In a brief telephone interview with NBC News, Trump declined to discuss the search-and-rescue efforts but said what happened would not affect negotiations with Iran. “No, not at all. No, it’s war,” he said. Separately, Iranian state media said a US A-10 attack aircraft crashed in the Persian Gulf after being struck by Iranian defense forces. A US official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive military situation said earlier that it was not clear whether the aircraft crashed or was shot down, or whether Iran was involved. Neither the status of the crew nor exactly where it went down was immediately known. Those incidents came as Iran fired on targets across the Middle East on Friday, keeping the pressure on Israel and its Gulf Arab neighbors despite US and Israeli insistence that Iran’s military capabilities have been all but destroyed. Second service member’s status unknown Neither the White House nor the Pentagon released public information about the downed planes. But the Pentagon notified the House Armed Services Committee that the status of a second service member from the fighter jet was not known. In an email from the Pentagon obtained by The Associated Press, meanwhile, the military said it received notification of “an aircraft being shot down” in the Middle East, without providing more details. Iran’s attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure and its tight grip on the Strait of Hormuz — through which a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas transits in peacetime — have roiled stock markets, sent oil prices skyrocketing and threatened to raise the cost of many basic goods, including food. Downed jet could mark a new level of pressure on the US Prior to word of the rescue, social media footage showed American drones, aircraft and helicopters flying over the mountainous region where a TV channel affiliated with Iranian state television had said earlier that at least one pilot bailed out of the fighter jet. An anchor urged residents to hand over any “enemy pilot” to police and promised a reward. It was the first time the US has lost aircraft in Iranian territory during the conflict and could mark a new level of pressure on the US military. Throughout the war, Iran has made a series of claims about shooting down piloted enemy aircraft that turned out not to be true. Friday was the first time Iran went on television urging the public to look for a downed pilot. Iranian state media said in a post on the social platform X that the military shot down a US F-15E Strike Eagle. The aircraft is a variation of the Air Force fighter jet that carries a pilot and a weapons systems officer. Alan Diehl, a former investigator for the Air Force Safety Center, said the Strike Eagle has an emergency locator beacon in a survival kit that can be set to activate automatically or manually. Iran targets a desalination plant and a refinery News about the downed planes came after Iran attacked Kuwait’s Mina al-Ahmadi oil refinery. The state-run Kuwait Petroleum Corp. said firefighters were working to control several blazes. Kuwait also said an Iranian attack caused “material damage” to a desalination plant. Also, sirens sounded in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia said it destroyed several Iranian drones, and Israel reported incoming missiles. Authorities in the United Arab Emirates shut down a gas field after a missile interception reportedly rained debris on it and started a fire. Activists reported strikes around Tehran and the central city of Isfahan, but it was not immediately clear what was hit. In Lebanon, where Israel has launched a ground invasion in its fight with the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militant group, an Israeli drone strike on worshippers leaving Friday prayers near Beirut killed two people, according to the state-run National News Agency. More than 1,900 people have been killed in Iran since the war began on Feb. 28 with US and Israeli strikes. In a review released Friday, the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data, a US-based group, said it found that civilian casualties were clustered around strikes on security and state-linked sites “rather than indiscriminate bombardment” of urban areas. More than two dozen people have died in Gulf states and the occupied West Bank, 19 have been reported dead in Israel, and 13 US service members have been killed. More than 1,300 people have been killed and more than 1 million displaced in Lebanon. Ten Israeli soldiers have also died there. Iran keeps a chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz World leaders, meanwhile, have struggled to end Iran’s stranglehold on the waterway, which has had far-reaching consequences for the global economy and has proved to be its greatest strategic advantage in the war. The UN Security Council was expected to take up the matter Saturday. Trump has vacillated on America’s role in the strait, alternately threatening Iran if it does not open it and telling other nations to “go get your own oil.” On Friday, he said in a post on social media that “with a little more time, we can easily OPEN THE HORMUZ STRAIT, TAKE THE OIL, & MAKE A FORTUNE.” Spot prices of Brent crude, the international standard, were around $109, up more than 50% since the start of the war, when Iran began restricting traffic through the strait.

Surgeons at Medilab (Pvt.) Hospital and Trauma Center in Shahrashti Upazila of Chandpur successfully removed a massive 8.2-kilogram tumor from a woman’s abdomen on Friday. The operation was conducted by the hospital chairman and surgeon, Dr. Md. Arif Ul Hasan. Family members of the patient, a 45-year-old woman from a village in neighboring Kachua Upazila (alias: Rokeya Begum), said she had been experiencing abnormal abdominal weight and pain for the past three to four months. Initial ultrasound tests suggested fluid accumulation in the abdomen, making it difficult to confirm the presence of a tumor. However, a subsequent CT scan verified the tumor, prompting surgery later in the day. Witnesses and medical staff were reportedly astonished by the tumor’s size during the procedure. Dr. Md. Arif Ul Hasan said, The tumor was identified through necessary examinations. The surgery lasted about one and a half hours, and the tumor was successfully removed. The patient is currently under intensive observation. The patient’s family avoided speaking to the media regarding the matter. Shahrashti Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Aklima Jahan said she could not comment without directly examining the patient and reviewing her complete medical history. She added that such a large tumor in the abdomen is indeed a matter of concern. Dr. Arif Ul Hasan has previously received recognition for his expertise in performing complex surgeries in district-level hospitals.

A woman died during a cesarean section at a private clinic in Birganj, Dinajpur, on Friday, triggering violent protests in which locals attacked the clinic, vandalized property, and blocked the road by setting tires on fire. The incident occurred at Birganj Clinic and Diagnostic Center around 4:00 pm when 25-year-old Sameja Khatun, wife of Abdur Razzak from Saranja village in Kahara Upazila, went into labor. She was undergoing a C-section to deliver a baby girl. According to her family, excessive bleeding occurred due to what they claim was a medical error during the operation. As her condition worsened, the clinic staff sent her to Zia Heart Foundation and Research Center in the district town. Despite medical efforts, Sameja Khatun could not be saved. Following the news of her death, locals gathered outside the clinic, protesting violently. They vandalized parts of the clinic and set fire to tires on the road, obstructing traffic until around 9:00 pm. The clinic staff, including doctor Bakul Hossain Malik Belal and other employees, reportedly fled the premises during the unrest. Birganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam confirmed the incident, stating that although Sameja Khatun was sent to the city in critical condition, she succumbed to her injuries. The OC added that the assistant land commissioner, Dipankar Barman, sealed the clinic following the incident. Legal action will be taken if the victim’s family files a formal complaint.

A violent clash erupted among residents of four villages in Bhanga upazila on Friday evening over a football game announcement, lasting around two and a half hours and leaving at least 30 people injured. The injured have been receiving treatment at Bhanga Upazila Health Complex and locally. The incident occurred from evening until around 7:30 pm at Munsurabad Bus Stand along the Faridpur-Bhanga-Khulna highway. Among the injured, Jinnat Mia, president of Munsurabad Market Merchants Association, sustained serious injuries. Police from Bhanga Thana arrived at the scene to try to control the situation, but the clash continued for over two hours. Later, with help from local leaders and police, villagers returned to their homes, though tension still remains across the area. According to local sources and police, the clash originated two days ago when Rahat, a teenager from Munsurabad village, faced assault and humiliation from residents of neighboring Khapura, Singardak, and Majhikanda villages while promoting a football match through loudspeakers. On Friday evening, in retaliation, opponents attacked Jinnat Mia, leaving him injured. Following the attack, Munsurabad villagers confronted residents from the three neighboring villages at Munsurabad Bus Stand armed with local weapons, shields, and sticks, while their opponents positioned themselves near Hamirdi Union Parishad. A prolonged exchange of brick-throwing, chasing, and counter-chasing ensued. Several shops were looted and vandalized during the violence. As night fell, torches were used during the confrontation. Bhanga Police Station SI Mamun said, We arrived at the scene promptly to control the situation. With the help of local leaders, we managed to pull both sides back and deployed police along the highway to prevent any further incidents.

The Special Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) handled a total of 3,778 criminal and 1,742 traffic cases in March 2026 through summary courts. Of 6,863 arrested individuals, 3,701 were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment. According to law officer (District and Sessions Judge) Mohammad Ataul Haque, DMP’s Motijheel division arrested 920 people and filed 552 cases in the summary court, imposing fines of Tk 171,000 and sentencing 633 individuals. Tejgaon division arrested 1,035 people, filed 550 cases, fined Tk 161,900, and sentenced 389 individuals. Wari division arrested 662 people, filed 361 cases, imposed fines of Tk 387,200, and sentenced 251 people. Similarly, Gulshan division handled 468 arrests and 321 cases, imposing fines of Tk 88,800 and sentencing 120; Mirpur division arrested 2,025, filed 1,017 cases, fined Tk 459,900, and sentenced 921. Ramna division recorded 690 arrests, 297 cases, fines of Tk 17,000, and 583 sentences; Lalbagh division had 485 arrests, 323 cases, fines of Tk 14,700, and 437 sentences; and Uttara division handled 578 arrests, 357 cases, fines of Tk 253,100, and 367 sentences. In traffic-related cases, DMP’s eight divisions filed 914 cases in March, of which 1,742 were resolved by the Special Metropolitan Magistrate with a total fine of Tk 318,700. Notably, Motijheel imposed fines of Tk 35,500 on 130 individuals, Tejgaon Tk 29,000 on 73, Wari Tk 41,500 on 172, Gulshan Tk 23,500 on 94, Mirpur Tk 38,500 on 121, Ramna Tk 61,000 on 106, Lalbagh Tk 28,700 on 78, and Uttara Tk 61,000 on 140 individuals. Summary courts under the Special Metropolitan Magistrate handle minor criminal offenses and cases punishable with light sentences, as allowed under the code of criminal procedure.

Residents of seven villages from Chandina and Debidwar upazilas formed a human chain on Friday, demanding construction of a foot overbridge at the Kathterpul area on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway. The programme was held around 3pm at Kathterpul point in Chandina, a busy stretch frequently used by pedestrians from both upazilas. Locals said the highway divides Debidwar and Chandina, with people from villages like Barkamta, Premu, Brahmankhara, Chhotona and Bagmara crossing the road daily to access Chandina Bazar, schools and colleges. Meanwhile, residents of Rarirchar and Gobindapur villages in Chandina also cross the highway regularly for educational purposes. They alleged that frequent road accidents occur in the area due to the absence of a safe crossing system, often claiming lives of students and people from different walks of life. The demand for a foot overbridge intensified after the tragic death of a schoolboy, Ibne Taim, who was crushed by a lorry while crossing the highway on April 1 on his way to school. Nearly 500 workers from two tea gardens in Sylhet received free blood group testing on Friday, organized by Ethnic Community Development (EKoDo) in collaboration with the Sylhet Red Crescent and the tea workers’ organization Cha Shromik Nari Mancha. The free blood grouping camps were held at Daladli and Kewachra tea gardens from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Both men, women, and children of various ages participated in the initiative. Speaking at the Kewachra camp, 45-year-old worker Sucharita Das said, As tea workers, we focus on plucking leaves and household chores. Despite being married with children, I never knew my blood group. Today, I learned I am B positive. Now, if I ever need a blood transfusion, it can be arranged quickly. Anita Das, 30, from Daladli tea garden said, "We never had the opportunity to know our blood groups before. Today, I finally learned that mine is O positive. It feels really good to know this after so many years." Kewachra worker Swapna Das added, Sometimes women need blood during childbirth, but we don’t know our blood group. It causes delays and difficulties in emergencies. Today, thanks to EKoDo, I learned for the first time that I am B positive. We are grateful for this valuable initiative. He further said, Nearly 7,000 female tea workers in Sylhet’s gardens do not know their blood groups, leaving them vulnerable in emergencies. This initiative ensures they can access the necessary blood without delay. The campaign was successfully conducted under EKoDo’s supervision, organized by Cha Shromik Nari Mancha with Red Crescent support.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) is set to host its first-ever Media Networking Session and Roadshow (B2B) & Networking Evening in Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh on April 5 and 6 respectively. This landmark initiative marks a significant step in strengthening tourism ties between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh while enhancing destination awareness among Bangladeshi travellers, organisers informed. They also said the Media Networking Session scheduled for April 5 is expected to attract over 40 leading media representatives from Bangladesh, providing a platform to showcase Sri Lanka’s diverse tourism offerings, including leisure, culture, wellness, and adventure experiences. The session aims to foster stronger engagement with the media and generate positive destination publicity in the Bangladeshi market. Following this, the Roadshow (B2B) & Networking Evening will be held on April 6 with approximately 150 Bangladeshi travel agents and tour operators in attendance. This business-focused event will facilitate direct interactions between Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi travel trade stakeholders, creating valuable opportunities for partnerships and business expansion. The Sri Lankan delegation will be led by Buddhika Hewawasam, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, alongside Shirani Herath, Assistant Director – South Asia. In 2025, Sri Lanka recorded 59,563 tourist arrivals from Bangladesh, contributing 3% of the total tourist arrivals. In 2026, up to 31st March, Sri Lanka has already welcomed 11,079 visitors from Bangladesh, accounting for 2% of the total arrivals. These figures highlight the steady growth potential of the market and the importance of targeted promotional efforts. Through these initiatives, Sri Lanka Tourism aims to further strengthen its presence in Bangladesh, enhance destination visibility, and build long-term collaborations with key stakeholders in the travel and media industries.

Commerce, Textiles, Jute and Industry Minister Khondkar Abdul Muktadir, on Friday urged citizens to use energy efficiently, emphasizing that conservation is crucial not just for individual benefit but for the welfare of the entire country. “By saving energy, we can use it for a longer period and reduce fuel imports, which will also lower foreign currency expenditure,” he said. Speaking to reporters after a meeting with local business leaders at his residence in Sylhet at 5:00 pm, the minister assured that there is no need for undue panic regarding fuel supplies and called for maintaining normalcy. Regarding possible changes in government and private office hours amid the global fuel crisis, he said, "If we all exercise caution and avoid unnecessary risks, normalcy can be maintained. Peak hours start after 6 pm; conserving electricity during this time will prevent extra expenses, and the savings can be used over the long term." Muktadir also noted that many countries adjust clocks for daylight savings during winter and summer, but Bangladesh does not. In this emergency situation, we have taken precautionary steps, and everyone should follow them to ensure disciplined implementation of government initiatives, he added. On LPG price hikes, the minister explained that rising costs in countries such as Saudi Arabia, from where LPG is imported, have led to higher domestic prices. However, he assured that as long as the economy remains stable, fuel prices will stay steady. Responding to concerns about fuel shortages affecting industrial production, Muktadir said industries reliant on gas will continue to receive uninterrupted supply, as the Ministry of Energy has ensured consistent distribution. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to attract foreign investment, mentioning a pending Economic Partnership Agreement with Japan and preparations for free trade agreements with several countries, which will secure preferential treatment for Bangladeshi products even after LDC graduation. Earlier in the day, the minister arrived in Sylhet via a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight, offered Friday prayers at Pir Mohalla Jame Mosque, and met with locals before holding discussions with business representatives at his residence. Prominent attendees included acting president of Sylhet BNP Rezaul Hasan Qayesh Lodi, former president Nasim Hossain, general secretary Imdad Hossain Chowdhury, former Sylhet Chamber president Khondkar Shipper Ahmed, and other local leaders.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has cancelled all leave of doctors, officials and health workers across the country until the ongoing measles outbreak among children is brought under control. The information was confirmed on Friday by a DGHS public relations official, who said an official order in this regard was issued Thursday. According to the office order, signed by DGHS Director (Administration) Prof Dr Jalal Uddin Mohammad Rumi, the decision was taken following a surge in measles-related pneumonia among children. To ensure uninterrupted medical services and facilitate vaccination efforts during this emergency period, all types of leave — including earned and casual leave — for doctors, officers and staff working under the DGHS and its affiliated health institutions have been suspended. The order has been issued with the approval of the appropriate authority and has come into immediate effect.

A manager of a sand quarry in Teota, Shibalaya upazila, was shot and hacked to death by unidentified assailants on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred around 5:30 pm at Alokdia Char in the upazila. The deceased Miraj Hossain was a resident of Dapunia village in Pabna Sadar upazila. Kawsar Alam, owner of the leased sand quarry under the company Messrs Iftiyar Enterprise, said Miraj was sitting on the dredger calculating accounts when several unidentified attackers arrived by speedboat and fired multiple rounds. One bullet hit Miraj, and the assailants then hacked him before fleeing the scene. He was later taken to the district hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. Kawsar Alam added that he had been managing the sand quarry under a government lease. On March 1, he received a death threat from an unknown mobile number and subsequently filed a general diary (GD) with Shibalaya police. Shibalaya police Officer-in-Charge Monir Hossain said the killing appears to be related to the sand business, and authorities are working to identify and apprehend the culprits.

A leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) was shot and hacked to death by unidentified miscreants in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna late Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Imran Hossain Sohag, 26, son of Enamul Haque of Baghoil Monnobipara village under Pakshi union. He was the convener of the proposed upazila JCD committee and member secretary of the upazila unit of Zia Cyber Force. According to police and local sources, Sohag was sitting with friends at a tea stall beside the railway line in front of Sarra Gopalpur High School around 10:30pm when a group of assailants, with their faces covered in black cloth, attacked him. The attackers allegedly hacked him indiscriminately and opened fire before fleeing the scene, leaving him dead on the spot. Additional Superintendent of Police (Ishwardi Circle) Pranab Kumar said police rushed to the scene after receiving information and found severe injuries on the victim, including a badly damaged head. Initially, it appears he was hacked to death. We have also recovered bullet shells from the scene, he said. The body has been sent to Pabna General Hospital morgue for autopsy, and efforts are underway to uncover the motive behind the killing.

The ‘B’ Unit (Humanities) admission test under the General Science and Technology (GST) cluster system for the 2025–26 academic session was held on Friday. The one-hour examination took place from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at 21 centres across the country. A total of 93,102 candidates applied for the ‘B’ Unit, of whom 76,762 appeared in the test, marking an attendance rate of 82.45 percent. Islamic University (IU) Acting Registrar Prof Dr Manjurul Haque, also secretary of the admission test core committee, confirmed the information on Friday afternoon. The GST cluster includes 20 general, science and technology universities across the country. These are Islamic University, Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Noakhali Science and Technology University, Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Jashore University of Science and Technology, Pabna University of Science and Technology, Begum Rokeya University, Gopalganj Science and Technology University, University of Barishal, Rangamati Science and Technology University, Rabindra University, University of Frontier Technology, Netrokona University, Jamalpur Science and Technology University, Chandpur Science and Technology University, Kishoreganj University, Sunamganj Science and Technology University, Pirojpur Science and Technology University and Naogaon University.

At least four people were injured in a stabbing incident in Talukanupur village of Gobindaganj upazila on Friday afternoon, with locals catching the attacker and handing him over to police. The suspect, identified as Rony, is the son of Khoybor Mondol from Bilkhara union of Panchbibi upazila in Joypurhat district. According to villagers, the attack took place shortly after Juma prayers when a youth suddenly entered the house of Abul Hossain and began repeatedly stabbing his son, Bablu Mia. Hearing his cries, Bablu’s sister Helena Begum rushed to rescue him, but the attacker allegedly tried to kill her by slashing her throat with a sharp knife. Bablu’s daughters, Shefali Akter and Papri Khatun, were also attacked when they came forward. As family members raised the alarm, nearby residents rushed to the scene and managed to overpower the attacker. Enraged locals beat him before handing him over to police. Police from Gobindaganj Police Station reached the spot and rescued the injured suspect, later admitting him to the upazila health complex. The reason behind the sudden and brutal attack could not be immediately known. Gobindaganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mozammel Haque said a suspect named Rony has been detained and further investigation is underway.

Bangladesh and Japan held the second round of talks on Friday to chart a path for operationalising the long-delayed third terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA). The discussions focused on revenue-related arrangements, with both sides planning further meetings to finalise decision. The bilateral meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs involved high-level officials from both countries to discuss the operation and maintenance of the nearly-complete terminal. Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman chaired the meeting. Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam (Rita), State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kabir, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, and the Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority, among other senior officials, attended the meeting. The Japanese delegation was headed by Nakayama Riiko, Assistant Vice Minister of Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The meeting comes as the government seeks to resume negotiations with the Japanese consortium to operationalise the terminal, which is over 99 percent complete but has yet to commence full commercial operations. A preliminary discussion on the matter was held on March 13 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also chaired by the Foreign Minister.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Friday said the government is importing fuel at higher prices to ensure energy security amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. "The impact of the Middle East war is not limited to Bangladesh alone; it has affected the entire world," he said while addressing the convocation of Independent University, Chattogram, as the chief guest. The minister said Bangladesh has been procuring oil and gas from multiple countries to deal with the global energy crisis and maintain stability in daily life and economic activities. He noted that uninterrupted fuel supply is being ensured to keep industries running, sustain production, and support agricultural activities. "The government will not compromise on energy security under any circumstances," Khosru added. He said there has been no major disruption so far, with industries operating as usual and people travelling smoothly during the Eid holidays. The minister, however, warned that the high cost of fuel imports has put significant pressure on the government's finances. "If this continues, it will impact the national budget and development activities, making it difficult to fulfil commitments made to the people," he said. Khosru indicated that the government is considering new decisions regarding fuel management and has already taken steps to promote energy conservation among ministers and officials. He urged people to cooperate with the government by using energy more efficiently. On the capital market, the minister said the government is planning major reforms to restore investor confidence and encourage large investors to raise funds from the stock market instead of relying heavily on bank loans. He lamented the lack of collaboration between universities and industries in Bangladesh, calling it a barrier to improving education quality and research output. Khosru stressed the need to prioritise technology-based education, noting that many graduates — even those with higher degrees — remain unemployed due to the overemphasis on general education. "Countries that are ahead in technology are better prepared to face future global challenges," he said, urging universities to introduce more technology-oriented curricula and faculties to enhance employability at home and abroad.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Friday evening watched an English film at a cinema hall in the capital with his daughter Barrister Zaima Rahman. He went to the Shimanto Shombhar cinema hall in Dhanmondi and watched the American science fiction film 'Project Hail Mary', said his Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon. “The Prime Minister came to the cinema hall in the evening to watch the film. His daughter, Barrister Zaima Rahman, accompanied him,” Rumon said. He said Tarique Rahman watched the film as part of leisure on a holiday. The additional press secretary said the show began at 7:10pm and ended at around 10:10pm. Project Hail Mary is currently being screened at Star Cineplex’s Shimanto Shombhar branch. It is a 2026 American science fiction film produced and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and written by Drew Goddard, based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir. It stars Ryan Gosling (who also produced the film alongside Weir), Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz and Lionel Boyce. The film follows the story of Ryland Grace, a man who wakes up on an interstellar spacecraft with no memory of how he got there.

Amid increased engagement from both sides to retune bilateral relations, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and his Indian counterpart Dr S. Jaishankar are set to meet in New Delhi next week, a move that could usher in a new phase of cooperation on a range of issues important to both Dhaka and Delhi and lend genuine momentum to the relationship, officials said. This will mark the first high-level visit to India since the BNP government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, assumed office, following a period of significant strain in bilateral relations. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is yet to make any official announcement regarding the planned brief visit. “The meeting between the two foreign ministers will be held in New Delhi on April 8,” a senior official told UNB, without elaborating further on his arrival and departure information.  The Indian side usually does not announce incoming visits but officially announces outgoing visits.   Bangladesh and India share deep-rooted bonds of history, language, culture, and multitude of other commonalities, said an official, noting that in any bilateral meeting all issues of mutual interest come up for discussion.  The two Foreign Ministers are likely to discuss cooperation in the areas of energy, water sharing, border management, visa, people-to-people ties, he said adding that a future visit of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India may also come up for discussion at the meeting. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already invited Prime Minister Tarique, his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman, their daughter Barrister Zaima Rahman to pay a visit to India at a convenient time. “I take this opportunity to invite you, along with Dr Zubaida Rahman and your daughter Zaima, on a visit to India at a mutually convenient time. Bangladesh-US relationship matters more than ever: Paul Kapur Prime Minister Modi said he looks forward to working closely with Prime Minister Tarique to strengthen their multifaceted bilateral relations, enhance regional cooperation, and advance their common goals in wide-ranging areas of connectivity, trade, technology, education, skill development, energy, healthcare, as well as cultural and people-to-people exchanges. Asked whether the Prime Minister would consider India for his first bilateral visit, a diplomatic source told UNB that Bangladesh would take a decision “creatively” on the matter. Water Sharing Issues The subject of water is widely seen as a sensitive issue and Bangladesh always keeps talking about its long pending request for concluding the agreement on the sharing of the waters of the Teesta River, the draft of which was finalised in 2011. The two countries share 54 common rivers, including the Teesta. In India’s federal scheme of things, nothing is done without consultations with the State Government and any agreement that they conclude will have to be acceptable to the State Government of India; at the same time, it would also have to be acceptable to Bangladesh, officials said. The Bangladesh-India Ganga/Ganges Water Treaty was signed on December 12, 1996 and is expiring in December this year. Dhaka, Delhi discuss defence cooperation As discussions for its renewal are yet to commence between the two countries, officials said this might be one of the issues to be discussed this time. In July 2024, the governments of Bangladesh and India had decided to begin discussions on renewal of the Ganga Water Treaty. The discussions are yet to commence in this regard and no fresh agreement has been ratified between the two countries. The Indian side had offered to renew it in 2024 but the interim government did not pursue it at that time, a diplomatic source in New Delhi told UNB.  Inputs on drinking water and industrial water requirements have also been received from all stakeholders including from the government of West Bengal, which have been taken into account while formulating the Indian government’s views. Visa Issues Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma, in his recent meetings with the Ministers in Dhaka, explored new areas for future collaboration in people-centric domains aligned with the respective developmental priorities of the two countries based on mutual interest and mutual benefit. Bangladesh intensifies energy diplomacy with US, Russia amid diversification push The two sides also discussed various aspects of Bangladesh-India economic cooperation, including ways to strengthen transport, energy and digital connectivity between the two countries. At the foreign minister–level meeting, the Bangladesh side is expected to raise the visa issue as tourist visas for Bangladeshis have remained suspended since July 2024 on security grounds. Indian visa centres in Bangladesh are still understaffed, suggesting that a full resumption of services may take time, a diplomatic source said, adding that the restart will be announced once finalised. India thinks the two countries can truly become catalysts for each other's sustainable growth, work for each other's security and enable mutual prosperity as two fast-growing economies and aspiring societies. Bangladesh and India on Thursday discussed ways to enhance bilateral defence cooperation, including joint training initiatives. The issues were discussed when Bangladesh High Commissioner to India M Riaz Hamidullah met Indian Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi at the South Block. They also explored opportunities for deeper collaboration aimed at promoting regional peace and security. The envoy said he was pleased to meet General Upendra Dwivedi and reflect on Bangladesh-India ties, including defence cooperation.

The BNP Standing Committee will hold a meeting on Saturday night to discuss the country’s current political situation and the party’s organisational matters. “BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has convened a meeting of the party’s Standing Committee on Saturday,” BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan told UNB on Friday. He said the meeting will be held at 8:30pm at the BNP chairman’s political office in the capital’s Gulshan area with Tarique Rahman in the chair. It will be the first meeting of the BNP Standing Committee, the party’s highest policymaking body, since it returned to power through the February 12 national election. The last meeting of the BNP Standing Committee was held on January 9. A BNP Standing Committee member, requesting anonymity, said the meeting will discuss the latest political situation in the country, the energy crisis and several organisational issues.

BNP Standing Committee member and political adviser to the Prime Minister Mirza Abbas has been shifted to a cabin from the Neuro Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Singapore General Hospital after 19 days under close medical observation. BNP Health Affairs Secretary Dr Rafiqul Islam said his condition has shown some improvement. “I spoke to his wife Afroza Abbas this morning. His condition is gradually improving. He has been moved from the ICU to a cabin today,” he said. Rafiqul also said doctors will continue advanced physiotherapy at the cabin, as Mirza Abbas underwent a complex brain surgery. “His treatment is still going on under close medical supervision and will need to continue,” Dr Rafiqul said. Mirza Abbas was flown to Singapore General Hospital by air ambulance on March 15 from a hospital in Dhaka while undergoing treatment. Earlier, on March 11, he fell unconscious during iftar and was admitted to Evercare Hospital. A medical board comprising leading neurologists of the country was formed, and based on its decision, he underwent emergency brain surgery. He was later taken to Singapore within 72 hours for further treatment.

The ‘B’ unit admission test under the General Science and Technology (GST) cluster system for the 2025-26 academic session was held at Islamic University (IU) on Friday. A total of 93,158 candidates, including 9,133 for the IU centre, registered for the ‘B’ unit admission test this year. However, 7,929 turned up for the entry test at the IU centre. The one-hour examination was conducted from 11:00am to 12:00pm in seven buildings on the campus. Seat plan banners and directional signs were placed at different points for the convenience of the examinees. Members of BNCC and Rover Scouts assisted candidates throughout the process. Candidates were allowed to enter the campus only through the main gate, while seating arrangements for guardians were made at the Thana Gate and in adjacent areas by different student organisations. University authorities said the test concluded peacefully, with no major irregularities reported. IU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nakib Muhammad Nasrullah expressed satisfaction, saying the examination was held in a peaceful and orderly manner with satisfactory attendance.

Chief Whip Nurul Islam on Friday said true independence is reflected in people’s ability to secure their livelihoods, stressing the importance of ensuring economic rights for ordinary citizens. “True freedom means ensuring people’s right to earn their livelihood,” he said, adding that a rickshaw puller’s right to work, a farmer’s right to cultivate land, and fair recognition of their labour are the real essence of independence. The Chief Whip said this while addressing a programme at the Jatiya Press Club auditorium in the capital, marking Independence and National Day. He said people have started to enjoy the benefits of independence after a long democratic struggle and claimed that an example of good governance has been established under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Nurul Islam said ensuring basic rights of citizens remains the government’s top priority. Referring to the tenure of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, he said people experienced better living conditions during that period. Speaking about post-independence conditions, he alleged that the country had faced severe hardship, including famine and lawlessness. He credited former President Ziaur Rahman with taking charge during a critical period and claimed that his initiatives, including canal excavation programme, helped overcome food shortages within a few years. On the July National Charter, the Chief Whip said there will be no tolerance for what he termed “negative politics” surrounding the issue. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing the charter through a lawful and systematic process. Criticising opposition parties, he said they have taken inconsistent positions on issues such as local government elections, reforms, and constitutional changes. He rejected the demand for a proportional representation (PR) system, saying it does not exist in countries like the United States or the United Kingdom. Nurul Islam also made critical remarks about Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and accused the Awami League of large-scale financial irregularities, while defending Prime Minister Tarique Rahman as a modest and accessible leader committed to reforms, including proposals to limit the tenure of a prime minister to two terms. He further said Ziaur Rahman introduced multi-party democracy and ensured media freedom, which he claimed contributed to the expansion of media outlets in the country. The Chief Whip added that Khaleda Zia later took responsibility during another difficult period, leading to improvements in people’s living standards and overall development. Chuadanga recorded the country’s highest temperature for the third consecutive day on Friday, with the mercury soaring to 39.7 degrees Celsius, causing extreme discomfort and disrupting daily life. According to the district Met office, the temperature reached 39.7 degrees Celsius at 3:00pm with 31% humidity, while it was 37 degrees Celsius at noon. Previously, temperatures were recorded at 36.3 degrees Celsius on April 1 and 38.5 degrees Celsius on April 2, marking a steady rise at the start of the season. A mild to moderate heat wave is currently sweeping through the district, with streets largely empty as residents avoided going outdoors unless necessary. People venturing outside were seen using umbrellas, hats, or cloth to shield themselves from the intense sun. Outdoor workers and day labourers are particularly struggling with the heat. Rickshaw and van drivers reported fewer passengers, while field workers continue to work under the scorching sun, taking occasional breaks in the shade. The demand for cold drinks and sugarcane juice has also surged across the town. Local watermelon vendor Abdul Alim said the heat has made roadside business extremely difficult, while motorcyclist Rakib described the conditions as exhausting, especially during power outages. Jaminur Rahman, in-charge of the Chuadanga First Class Weather Observatory, said the mild to moderate heat wave may continue for several days, with no immediate sign of rainfall.

A mobile taskforce detained 38 fishermen for catching Jatka (Hilsa fries) in the Meghna River sanctuary of Chandpur in violation of a government-imposed ban. Of the detainees, 32 were sent to jail after a case was filed against them at the local River Police Station. The remaining six detainees, including two who were ill and four minors, were freed after giving undertakings. Chandpur Sadar upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Mirza Omar Faruk said the drive was conducted from Wednesday afternoon to early Thursday across several points of the Meghna River – from Akhoner Haat to Bohoria. During the drive, the taskforce detained the fishermen while catching Jatka. It also seized two fishing boats, around 5,000 metres of illegal current net and approximately 20 kg of Jatka. Officials from the upazila fisheries office, including Assistant Fisheries Officer Md Mizanur Rahman, along with members of Chandpur River Police, took part in the drive. Most of the accused fishermen are residents of char areas in Chandpur Sadar upazila and reportedly cited financial hardship as the reason behind engaging in illegal fishing.  

Prices of Sonali chicken and Hilsa have gone up in Dhaka’s kitchen markets, with traders citing supply shortages and rising demand ahead of Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bangla New Year. A visit to several markets in Shantinagar, Motijheel, Malibagh, Rampura, Badda and Kuril on Friday showed while broiler chicken prices dropped to Tk 200 per kg from Tk 240, Sonali chicken prices increased further to Tk 380-400 per kg, up from Tk 350 just a week ago. At the beginning of Ramadan, Sonali chicken was selling at Tk 280-300 per kg, which rose to Tk 340-360 in the last week of Ramadan. Consumers had expected prices to ease after Eid, but the trend has reversed. “I waited thinking prices would fall after Eid, but now it has gone up to Tk 400 per kg,” said Tipu Sarker, a consumer at AGB Colony Kitchen Market in Motijheel. Traders attributed the price hike to supply shortages. “Earlier, we could bring two pickup loads of chicken from Gazipur within a day. Now we have to wait two days even after placing orders,” said Selim Ali, a trader at Uttar Badda, adding that transport costs have risen and advance payments are now required. Vendors also reported a decline in sales due to higher prices. “People who used to buy four chickens now buy two. Some even reduce to one instead of a pair,” said Sabuj, a trader at Rampura market. Alongside Sonali chicken, prices of indigenous chicken have also surged, reaching Tk 780-800 per kg, compared to Tk 550-600 before Ramadan. Prices rose to Tk 650-700 in early Ramadan and further to Tk 720-750 during Eid. Buyers termed the price hike unreasonable, though traders again blamed supply constraints. Meanwhile, beef prices remained largely stable, selling at around Tk 800 per kg in most shops, with priced between Tk 820-850 in some areas. Hilsa prices have also increased ahead of Pahela Baishakh. Hilsa weighing below 500 grams, previously sold at Tk 800-1,000, is now priced at Tk 1,400-1,500. Hilsa weighing 700-800 grams is selling for Tk 2,200-2,300, while larger fish of one kg or more is priced at Tk 2,600-2,800 per kg. Traders said Hilsa supply has declined in recent days, although it may improve toward the end of April. Besides, increased demand ahead of the Bangla New Year has pushed prices up for now. Egg prices have also risen by Tk 10 per dozen over the past week, now selling at Tk 120-130 compared to Tk 100-110. Loose soybean oil prices have increased by Tk 10 per litre, reaching Tk 200 from Tk 190 in Badda retail market, while bottled soybean oil remains in short supply in many shops. Vegetable prices remained mostly stable, with no significant change observed in potato and onion prices. But, traders warned that continued supply disruptions could lead to further price hikes in the coming weeks.

The government has decided to cut fuel consumption by 30% for official vehicles used by the Prime Minister, ministers and state ministers as part of sweeping austerity measures to reduce public expenditure amid global energy crisis. The decision, taken at a Cabinet meeting held on Thursday night at the Jatiya Sangsad complex with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair, was disclosed at a press briefing organised by the Cabinet Division on Friday. As per the decision, fuel use for government vehicles on a monthly basis will be reduced by 30%, while the consumption of energy – electricity and gas – in government offices will also be cut by the same margin. The government has also suspended all purchases of vehicles, watercraft, aircraft and computers in the public sector until further notice. The Cabinet decided to reduce expenditure on beautification of residential buildings by 20% and non-residential buildings by 50%. Besides, land acquisition will remain suspended for the time being, the briefing said.

The government has announced a series of sweeping austerity measures, including suspension of interest-free car loans for officials and a 30% cut in fuel consumption for official vehicles, to reduce public expenditure amid mounting economic pressure. The decisions were taken at a Cabinet meeting held on Thursday night at the Jatiya Sangsad complex with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair, and disclosed at a Cabinet Division press briefing on Friday. As part of the measures, interest-free loans for purchasing vehicles by public servants have been suspended until further notice. Under the existing policy, officials with the rank of deputy secretary and above are entitled to interest-free loans of up to Tk 30 lakh to purchase vehicles. They also receive a monthly allowance of Tk 50,000 for maintenance and driver salary, along with an annual depreciation benefit of 10%. As part of the new measures, the Cabinet suspended the loan facility. At the same, all government-funded foreign training programmes were also kept on hold until further notice. It also decided to reduce domestic training-related costs by 50%, cut hospitality expenses for meetings and seminars by 50%, and lower seminar and conference expenses by 20%. Travel expenses will also be reduced by 30%, the briefing said.
