A delegation from the British Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BBCCI) met Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam in London on Sunday to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral trade, investment, transport connectivity and broader economic cooperation between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom. The BBCCI delegation was led by its newly elected Director General, Musleh Ahmed, and included members of the Chamber's newly elected Executive Committee and senior directors. The meeting provided an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation between the Bangladesh government and the Bangladeshi business community in the UK. The two sides discussed a range of issues relating to bilateral trade, investment, transport, connectivity and broader economic cooperation. During the meeting, the BBCCI delegation reaffirmed the Chamber's commitment to supporting Bangladesh's sustainable economic development. It also stressed the need to further strengthen UK-Bangladesh trade and investment relations, attract more foreign direct investment (FDI), develop transport and communications infrastructure, expand digital connectivity and increase the participation of the UK-based Bangladeshi business community in the country's development. The delegation highlighted the significant contribution of British Bangladeshi entrepreneurs to the economies of both countries and expressed its willingness to work closely with the ministry and relevant government agencies to boost investment, expand business cooperation and promote sustainable economic growth. Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam welcomed the delegation and praised BBCCI's longstanding role in promoting trade and investment between Bangladesh and the UK. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has said there can be no normalisation of relations with Israel until its occupation of Palestinian territory comes to an end. In a speech, el-Sisi said lasting peace, real stability and public acceptance of normal ties with Israel would only be possible through a just peace that ends the occupation, stops injustice and aggression, restores the rights of Palestinians and ensures security for everyone. Egypt, the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, believes the path to resolving conflicts in the Middle East lies in a comprehensive peace agreement between Israel and Palestine, he said. El-Sisi added that a just peace would give people across the region the opportunity to live in stability and prosperity. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad returned on Sunday night after attending the state funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in Tehran. The Speaker arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 11:00pm following his visit to the Iranian capital. He had left Dhaka for Tehran on July 2 to represent Bangladesh at the state funeral, where he paid tribute on behalf of the government and the people of Bangladesh. During the solemn ceremony held at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla, the Speaker offered prayers for the late Iranian leader and met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior leaders. He conveyed Bangladesh’s condolences and expressed solidarity with the people of Iran on behalf of the government and the people of Bangladesh. During the visit, Speaker Hafiz Uddin also praised Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf for what he described as his constructive role in implementing the recently signed peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States. He also formally invited Ghalibaf to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time.

The government has reconstituted the Press Accreditation Committee under the Press Accreditation Policy 2025. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued an office order in this regard on Sunday. Under the new committee, the Chief Information Officer of the Directorate of Information will serve as chairman. Other official members are the Director General of the Public Diplomacy Wing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Director General of the Department of Films and Publications, the Deputy Secretary (Press-2) of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and the Deputy Secretary of the Secretariat Security Branch of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The journalist members are Atiqur Rahman Rumon, editor of the daily Dinkal and Additional Press Secretary to the Prime Minister; Quader Gani Chowdhury, secretary general of the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) and Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ); General Secretary of the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) Khurshid Alam;  Md Shafiqul Islam, CEO and Head of News of Ekattor Television; and Umme Marufa, special correspondent of News24 Television. The Senior Deputy Chief Information Officer (Protocol) of the Directorate of Information will serve as the member secretary of the committee. According to the office order, the committee will oversee the issuance of press accreditation cards, address objections and complaints related to the cards, conduct hearings where necessary, and settle related disputes. The committee will also recommend necessary additions, amendments and revisions to the Press Accreditation Policy. Under the Press Accreditation Policy 2025, journalists will be issued a single type of press accreditation card valid for three years, replacing the previous system of permanent and temporary accreditation cards.

The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) on Sunday alleged that the government's tax concessions on 63 essential commodities under the national budget have yet to translate into lower retail prices, blaming weak market oversight and what it described as “double standards” by a section of traders. In a statement, CAB Vice-President SM Nazer Hossain said the government had reduced source tax on a wide range of essential items, including rice, wheat, pulses, onions, garlic, ginger, edible oil, sugar, fish, livestock and poultry from 5 percent, 2 percent and 1 percent to 0.5 percent in a bid to lower import and marketing costs. “Consumers were expecting the benefits of these tax cuts to be reflected in the retail market, but prices of many essential commodities have remained unchanged or even increased,” he said. Nazer alleged that some traders raised prices immediately after the budget announcement, citing higher import costs of existing stocks, while prices of products on which duties had not been increased also went up. He claimed that inconsistent pricing practices by traders, coupled with ineffective market monitoring by the authorities, have prevented stability in the essential commodities market. The CAB leader also said the withdrawal of the 5 percent regulatory duty on imported spices and dates has yet to benefit consumers. Prices of several spices, including cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, poppy seeds, cashew nuts and almonds, remain high, while the impact of the tax relief on dates has not yet been felt in the market. He criticised traders' argument that prices would decline only after new consignments arrive, saying such explanations undermine the purpose of tax concessions and deprive consumers of the intended benefits. Referring to the government's post-budget commitment that prices of tax-relieved products should come down, Nazer said there has been little visible progress so far. He urged the district administration, the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection and other market monitoring agencies to intensify oversight to ensure that tax reductions are passed on to consumers. “The success of the government's people-friendly budget will ultimately depend on whether ordinary consumers receive its intended benefits,” Nazer added.

The government has sent 33 senior police officers, including 14 deputy inspectors general (DIGs), on compulsory retirement. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification to this effect on Sunday. Besides the 14 DIGs, those sent on compulsory retirement include 18 additional deputy inspectors general (Additional DIGs) and one superintendent of police (SP). Police reshuffle: Nine DIG, SP-rank officers transferred The DIGs are Molla Nazrul Islam, Saiful Islam, Miraj Uddin Ahmed, Shah Mizan Shafiur Rahman, SM Mostaq Ahmed Khan, Jihadul Kabir, Moinul Haque, Elias Sharif, Shyamal Kumar Nath, Zakir Hossain Khan, Shah Abid Hossain, Jamil Hasan, Mahbubur Rahman and Md Moniruzzaman. The Additional DIGs are Barkatullah Khan, TM Mozahidul Islam, Anwar Hossain Khan, Md Moniruzzaman, Mehedul Karim, Alamgir Kabir, Roshidul Hasan, Sanjoy Kumar Kundu, Nizamul Haque Mollah, SM Emran Hossain, Saidur Rahman Khan, Shamsunnahar, Molla Jahangir Hossain, Saifullah Al Mamun, Khan Muhammad Rezwan, Sajid Hossain, Sheikh Rafiqul Islam and Mashrukur Rahman Khaled. Superintendent of Police Abdullah Aref was also sent on compulsory retirement. According to the notification, the retired officers will receive retirement benefits in accordance with the applicable service rules.

The long-awaited direct flight service between Manchester and Sylhet resumed on Sunday. The move would strengthen connectivity with Bangladeshi expatriates, particularly the large Sylheti community in the United Kingdom, said officials. Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam welcomed passengers arriving on the inaugural resumed flight from Manchester at Osmani International Airport. Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir was present there. The Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister said the direct service had resumed following the initiative and directives of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, fulfilling a long-standing demand of UK-based Bangladeshis, especially Sylheti expatriates. The government is committed to ensuring the route operates regularly and sustainably by improving passenger services, keeping airfares at a reasonable level and expanding facilities for expatriate Bangladeshis, who are major contributors to the country's remittance inflows, she said. The ongoing expansion of Osmani International Airport would significantly enhance its capacity to handle international flights, she added. When speaking the Commerce Minister said initiatives had also been taken to resume flights on the Sylhet-Cox's Bazar route. The government is implementing plans to develop Osmani International Airport into a fully functional international airport and a regional aviation hub, while working to attract more international airlines and expand air connectivity with neighbouring regions, he said.

The Embassy of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria in Dhaka on Sunday celebrated the 64th National Independence Day of Algeria with a solemn and dignified ceremony, highlighting Algeria’s historic struggle for freedom, its revolutionary legacy, and the growing friendship between Algeria and Bangladesh. A case has been filed against the editor and publisher of online news portal Face the People, Shaifur Rahman (Saifur Sagor) and its reporter, Mohammad Yousuf, on charges of extortion and defamation. The case was filed on Sunday by Md Kamruzzaman, chief executive officer of Mastul Foundation. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibuzzaman took cognisance of the complaint and directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the allegations and submit a report by August 10. Advocates Md Emdadul Haque Lal, Azad Rahman and Enamul Haque Sunny represented the plaintiff. According to the complaint, the two accused visited the Mastul Foundation office in connection with publishing reports on the Face the People online portal. The complaint alleges that they demanded Tk 20,000 for publishing a report, Tk 15,000 for publishing a press release on behalf of the foundation, and a monthly payment of Tk 50,000 for continued coverage of the organisation's activities. It further alleges that after the foundation refused to meet the demands, the accused threatened to damage its reputation. The plaintiff also alleged that Face the People published a report on June 28 that defamed the foundation, causing it financial losses estimated at Tk 20 crore. The complaint states that the plaintiff intends to file a separate case seeking compensation for the alleged financial loss.

The government has appointed 77 more previously deprived candidates from the 27th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination to various BCS cadres. The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification on Sunday making the appointments based on the Bangladesh Public Service Commission's (BPSC) recommendation. The appointments follow a prolonged legal battle over the recruitment process. On December 18 last year, the ministry appointed 673 candidates from the 27th BCS following a court verdict. Later, on May 13 this year, another 96 candidates were appointed to different BCS cadres. According to the notification, the newly appointed candidates have been asked to join their respective cadre-controlling ministries or departments by July 14, unless they receive further instructions. Failure to join by the stipulated date will be treated as a refusal to accept the appointment, and the appointment will be cancelled. The notification also said the appointments will take effect retrospectively from the date on which the first appointment notification for their batch was issued to preserve their seniority. Their notional seniority will be counted from the joining date of the first appointees of the batch. However, the appointees will not be entitled to any arrears or other retrospective financial benefits resulting from the backdated appointments.  

Balanced nutrition, a healthy lifestyle and regular physical exercise are the keys to long-term wellbeing, speakers said at a health and wellness seminar organised by the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in the capital on Sunday. The seminar, titled "Health & Wellness Seminar-2026: The Science of Lifelong Health: Nutrition and Lifestyle," was arranged at the seminar hall of the old IEB building to promote health awareness among engineers and highlight the importance of healthy living. Addressing the seminar, Riazul Islam said changing lifestyles had significantly altered people's eating habits, with many, particularly young people, becoming increasingly dependent on fast food and sugary soft drinks. He warned that excessive consumption of foods high in sugar, salt, trans fats and unhealthy fats was increasing the risks of diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, obesity and kidney-related illnesses. Delivering the welcome address, IEB Honorary Assistant Secretary (Administration and Finance) Engineer Muhammad Ahsanul Russell said the institution had long been working to enhance engineers' professional skills, technological knowledge and leadership through its 18 centres, 34 sub-centres and 14 overseas chapters. He said that besides professional development, ensuring the physical and mental wellbeing of engineers had become one of the organisation's priorities, which inspired it to organise its first dedicated health seminar. The keynote paper was presented by Prof Dr Md Mojibul Haque, Medical Consultant and Clinical Research Manager at Biologics–Quantum Cellular Medicine (QCM), USA, and Professor of Integrative Medicine at Washington University of Science and Technology. He said good health was not merely the absence of disease but a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing. Referring to the growing global burden of non-communicable diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, cancer and mental health disorders, he said many of these conditions could be prevented through healthy eating, regular exercise and lifestyle modifications. He also highlighted the health benefits of fasting, saying that scientific studies suggest properly practised fasting may improve metabolism, support weight management and contribute to long-term health, although it should be undertaken considering an individual's age, physical condition and medical advice. Emphasising the importance of physical activity, he recommended at least 30 minutes of exercise daily, such as walking, jogging or cycling, to improve cardiovascular health, regulate blood pressure, reduce weight and relieve stress. On sleep, he said adults should aim for seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night to support cell repair, memory, immunity and mental wellbeing. The seminar concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session where participants discussed nutrition, exercise, healthy eating habits and maintaining wellbeing despite busy professional lives. Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), on Sunday invited both local and foreign investors to come forward to revive state-owned industrial enterprises through private investment. Stressing that the private sector is best suited for running commercial entities, he noted that the government's primary role should be to facilitate private investment rather than competing with it. In a post shared on his official LinkedIn account on Sunday, the BIDA chief highlighted that this initiative would provide investors with quick business expansion opportunities via ready infrastructure or "plug-and-play" facilities. At the same time, it will relieve fiscal pressure on the government and generate new employment opportunities, making it a win-win scenario for both parties. According to the BIDA Chairman, a total of 44 investable opportunities has already been identified across various state agencies. These opportunities span sectors including steel, textiles, chemicals, sugar, food, and jute, covering an aggregate land area of over 10,000 acres. Ashik emphasized that these industrial assets are strategically located within critical industrial zones across the country rather than being isolated properties. In most cases, these sites already boast essential infrastructure—such as electricity, gas, and transportation links—alongside an established industry-oriented workforce and community. Discussions are currently underway with domestic and international investors regarding the productive reuse of these assets. While some enterprises may be restarted within their original sectors, other assets could be repurposed for new industries aimed at reducing import dependency or boosting export capabilities. To facilitate this transition, the BIDA Chief assured investors of a transparent framework, fast-tracked approvals, and integrated assistance during the asset acquisition process. Maldives' High Commissioner to Bangladesh Shiuneen Rasheed on Sunday called and met Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam and discussed issues of mutual interest. During the discussions, they highlighted the close and cordial relations between the Maldives and Bangladesh, including continued cooperation at regional and multilateral forums. Discussions also focused on exploring ways to further strengthen the existing ties to expand mutually beneficial opportunities for both countries. The Central Police Hospital has successfully performed its first-ever percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), commonly known as coronary angioplasty, marking a historic milestone for the institution since its establishment in 1954. The procedure was carried out at the hospital's cardiac catheterisation (Cath) Lab on a member of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Traffic Division. The angioplasty was performed by cardiology specialists of the Central Police Hospital under the leadership of Prof Dr Abdul Wadud Chowdhury, director of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and Hospital. The patient is currently under close observation at the hospital's Coronary Care Unit (CCU), and his condition is stable. The launch of the service opens a new chapter in cardiac care at the Central Police Hospital, enabling members of the Bangladesh Police and their family members to receive modern, international-standard heart treatment and emergency cardiac intervention services more quickly and conveniently. The hospital said it remains committed to ensuring quality healthcare by incorporating advanced medical technologies, developing skilled healthcare professionals and expanding specialised medical services, according to a press release..

Bangladesh Bank (BB) on Sunday issued fresh directives regarding the appointment of audit firms to examine applications for alternative cash assistance and export subsidies in customs bonds and duty draw-backs for export-oriented domestic textile and other applicable sectors. According to a circular issued by the Foreign Exchange Policy Department-1 (FEPD-1) of the central bank, banks can now appoint audit firms to scrutinize cash incentive applications for exports made in FY2026-27, subject to a 'No Objection Certificate' (NOC) from the FEPD-1. BB announces export incentives for 43 sectors for Fy26-27 The circular, signed by FEPD-1 Director Md. Harun-Ar-Rashid, stated that banks may engage an equal number of audit firms as those currently employed for their regular bank accounting audits. However, if any bank requires additional audit firms beyond that number, it must submit a formal application to Bangladesh Bank for approval. The central bank specified that such applications must clearly outline the justification for appointing extra firms, the previous history of those firms working with the bank, the volume of cash assistance/export subsidy cases, and other necessary data. The central bank noted that all other previous instructions regarding audit procedures—including those detailed in FE Circular Letter No. 10 (dated July 08, 2024) and FE Circular No. 20 (dated December 03, 2023)—will remain unchanged. All Authorized Dealer (AD) banks have been instructed to immediately inform the relevant stakeholders about the new guidelines.

A 35-year-old man was allegedly killed by a group of miscreants in Mymensingh town on Sunday due to old enmity. The deceased was identified as Mizanur Rahman Rubel, also known as Kaila Rubel. Quoting locals, police said Rubel was in his room at a rented house in the Chhatris Bari Colony area on Ramakrishna Mission Road when several miscreants entered around 11:30am. Youth stabbed dead in Sylhet The attackers allegedly beat him with bamboo sticks before slitting his throat, leaving him critically injured. Locals rescued Rubel and took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. Mymensingh Superintendent of Police Mohammad Kamrul Hasan said the preliminary investigation suggests the murder may have been motivated by previous enmity. Police have detained two suspects for questioning and are conducting drives to identify and arrest the other perpetrators, he said.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain has warned that officials found guilty of negligence or corruption in the health sector will be removed from their jobs, wherever such irregularities are detected. "Wherever negligence and corruption are found, the responsible person will be dismissed. I don't believe in transfers or postings as punishment, work must be done with honesty. No corruption or bribery will be tolerated," the minister said while addressing the 31st annual general meeting of Narsingdi Diabetic Samity as chief guest at Shishu Academy auditorium in Narsingdi on Saturday. The minister said 50-bed dialysis centres would be set up at every medical college hospital in the country. Union-level community clinics would be renovated and revamped, with more doctors and health workers appointed. Family planning centres would also be upgraded. He expressed hope that a positive transformation in the health sector would be visible by 2026. The minister said new programmes were being undertaken in every sector to ensure people's development and to help Bangladesh hold its head high on the world map. Describing this year's health sector budget as an "ideal" one, he said every taka allocated to the sector would be spent with proper accountability and free from corruption. The event was inaugurated under the chairmanship of Narsingdi Deputy Commissioner and Diabetic Samity president Israt Jahan Keya. Khairul Kabir Khokon, BNP joint secretary general and MP from Narsingdi-1 (Sadar), also spoke at the programme.

Industries Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said on Sunday said the government is working to raise the contribution of the cottage, micro, small and medium enterprise (CMSME) sector to at least 60 percent of the national economy. He also directed officials of the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) to submit specific proposals within the next seven days to help accelerate the implementation of ongoing and new industrial projects. The directives came while addressing a daylong workshop titled "Contribution of BSCIC Industrial Estates to the National Economy and Measures to Overcome Existing Challenges" at the BSCIC headquarters in Tejgaon, Dhaka. The workshop brought together officials from BSCIC industrial estates across the country to discuss the organisation's achievements over the past 69 years, as well as the challenges and future prospects of the sector.

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Bangla Academy President Abul Quasem Fazlul Huq. In a statement issued on Sunday night, the party said Prof Huq made significant contributions to the educational and cultural sectors. The party also remembered his contributions to education, research and creative works with deep respect. Eminent writer, researcher and academic Prof Huq passed away around 2:30 pm on Sunday at the National Heart Foundation in Mirpur after falling ill at a family programme. He received the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1981.

Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Sunday stressed the need to strengthen the capacityand professionalism of the Statistics and Informatics Division (SID) and the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), saying greater public confidence in official statistics depends on credible and transparent data. Speaking at an view-exchange meeting with officials of the SID and BBS in Dhaka, the minister emphasised the importance of ensuring the independence of official data publication and enhancing the institutional capacity of the country's national statistical agency, according to a Planning Ministry statement . Planning Ministry State Minister Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki, Statistics and Informatics Division Secretary Md Firoz Sarkar, Acting Director General of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics Md Mir Hossain and senior officials of the ministry and the BBS attended the meeting. The minister instructed officials to take steps to update the organisational structure and recruitment rules of the BBS to improve career progression and professional standards among its officials. He also called for expanding research opportunities at the BBS and ensuring the maximum use of official statistics in government policymaking and planning. Besides, he directed the Statistics and Informatics Division to take the initiative to establish a Statistics Academy. Following the meeting, Amir Khosru formally inaugurated the Microdata Analysis Lab at the BBS headquarters in Agargaon. The newly launched facility is a secure on-site research laboratory that will allow authorised students, researchers, economists, policymakers and other approved users to analyse anonymised microdata generated through national censuses and surveys. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the minister said reliable data are one of the key foundations of sound planning and national development. He said the Microdata Analysis Lab would provide researchers and policymakers with a secure and controlled environment for in-depth analysis, enabling innovative research using official government data. Noting that the BBS regularly generates vast amounts of microdata through national censuses and surveys, he said the new facility would ensure that the data are utilised in a more secure, organised and research-friendly manner. "From data to knowledge, and from knowledge to development," the minister said, expressing hope that the Microdata Analysis Lab would make a significant contribution to building a data-driven Bangladesh. State Minister Zonayed  Saki said the new facility would open up fresh opportunities for students, researchers, economists and policymakers, making the use of national data more effective in research and policy formulation.

The total number of dengue cases reported in the country this year has reached 6,871 as 271 new patients admitted to hospitals across the country in 24 hours till Sunday morning. Besides, the dengue death toll reached 19 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). DGHS data shows that 52.4 percent of this year’s dengue patients are male, while 47.6 percent are female.. According to DGHS records, Bangladesh reported 102,861 dengue cases and 413 dengue-related deaths in 2025. 

A motorcyclist and his pillion rider were killed after their motorcycle collided with a passenger bus on the Faridpur-Barishal Highway in Faridpur's Nagarkanda upazila on Sunday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Fahim Matubbor, 23, son of Zahid Matubbor, and Rafiqul Matubbor, son of Kawsar Matubbor. Both were residents of Chak Naudubi village under Fulsuti union in the upazila. Eight DB men injured in Sherpur road accident The accident occurred around 5:30pm in the Masha Ujan area when a Sakura Paribahan bus travelling from Barishal to Faridpur collided head-on with the motorcycle, which was heading towards Nagarkanda. Fahim, who was riding the motorcycle, died on the spot, said Rosul Samdani Azad, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nagarkanda Police Station. Rafiqul, the pillion rider, was rescued in critical condition and taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The accident disrupted traffic on the highway for about 30 minutes, causing long tailbacks on both sides of the road. Later, highway police reached the scene, brought the situation under control and restored normal traffic flow. The OC said the bus involved in the accident had been seized. Further legal proceedings are underway in connection with the accident, he added.

Hundreds of firefighters continued battling major wildfires in Portugal and Greece on Sunday, while authorities in northern Greece warned residents to stay indoors because of toxic smoke from a burning recycling plant. In Portugal, more than 1,200 firefighters, supported by nearly 400 vehicles and 15 aircraft, were trying to contain a wildfire in the central Vouzela region that has been burning since Thursday. According to the European Union's Copernicus satellite monitoring agency, the fire had scorched about 12,000 hectares by Sunday. Fast-moving wildfire forces evacuations near Greece's Thessaloniki The European Union's Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid department said Spain sent 120 firefighters and 45 vehicles to Portugal on Friday, while Italy and Spain also deployed three firefighting aircraft to assist. In Greece, a wildfire that reached a recycling plant near the Thessaloniki suburb of Oraiokastro on Saturday evening forced evacuation alerts for three suburbs and a facility housing 157 people with special needs. Strong winds spread the flames, prompting the deployment of about 160 firefighters overnight until water-dropping aircraft joined the operation at daybreak. Authorities advised residents in parts of Thessaloniki to remain indoors with windows and doors closed because of toxic smoke. Mayor Pandelis Tsakiris said several homes and businesses were damaged. Police arrested a 76-year-old man on suspicion of accidentally starting the fire with sparks from his vehicle. Fire officials said about 85% of Greece's wildfires are caused by negligence, despite increasing use of satellite technology to detect fires.

Leader of the Opposition Dr Md Shafiqur Rahman on Sunday discussed Bangladesh's post-election situation and other issues with Spain's Ambassador to Bangladesh Gabriel Maria Sistiaga Ochoa de Chinchetru at his Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban office on Sunday. According to a press release, the two sides exchanged views on Bangladesh's overall political and economic situation after the national election, the recently passed national budget, and ways to further deepen the longstanding friendly relations between Bangladesh and Spain. Their discussions also covered expanding cooperation in trade, investment and development, alongside other issues of mutual interest.

French Ambassador to Bangladesh Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet on Sunday reaffirmed France's commitment to strengthening its partnership with Bangladesh, expressing interest in expanding French support and exploring new financing instruments through the French Treasury. The Ambassador paid a courtesy call on Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury at his office at the Secretariat and discussed issues of mutual interest. During the meeting, the Ambassador congratulated the Finance Minister on the successful passage of the first national budget of the new government. He expressed confidence that the ambitious budget would help restore economic momentum and support Bangladesh's continued growth and development. Their discussions covered issues related to Bangladesh's graduation from the LDC category, the government's new priorities in infrastructure development as well as human capital investment, France's longstanding support for Bangladesh, and opportunities for further bilateral cooperation. In particular, they discussed the role of the French Development Agency (AFD) in Bangladesh's socio-economic development, said the French Embassy in Dhaka. AFD's ongoing programmes focus on water supply, sanitation, and energy, where the agency remains one of Bangladesh's leading bilateral development partners.

A Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinee was killed after the motorcycle he was riding crashed into a roadside tree in Rangpur's Gangachara upazila on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Rangan Goswami, 18, son of Pradip Chandra Goswami of Ramnagarpara village under Betgari union in the upazila. Rangan was a student of Dhantala Reyaz Uddin School and College and was appearing in the ongoing HSC examinations. Truck-pickup collision leaves latter's driver, helper dead on Dhaka-Aricha highway The accident occurred around 8am at Shahpara intersection on the Betgari–Paglapir road when Rangan was heading out from home on his motorcycle. He lost control of the vehicle and hit a roadside tree, dying on the spot. Abdus Sabur, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gangachara Model Police Station, said the body was handed over to the family as they had no complaints over the incident. An unnatural death (UD) case has been filed in connection with the accident, he added.

The government has transferred nine Deputy Inspector Generals (DIG) and Superintendents of Police (SP) of Bangladesh Police on Sunday. Two separate notifications were issued on Sunday by the Home Ministry in this regard. According to the notifications, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Special Branch (SB) Md Iqbal Hossain has been made DIG (Dhaka Range), while Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) Commissioner (DIG) Md Ashiq Saeed has been appointed as DIG (Rajshahi Range). Police begin wearing new uniforms featuring dark blue and olive shirts DIG at the Police Headquarters Abu Raihan Muhammad Saleh has been made as Commissioner (DIG) of the BMP. Meanwhile, DIG (Barishal Range) Md Mostafizur Rahman has been made as DIG (Khulna Range), DIG (Khulna Range) Md Rezaul Haque has been  transferred as DIG (Industrial Police), and DIG (Rajshahi Range) Mohammad Shahjahan has been appointed as DIG of the Armed Police Battalion (APBN). In a separate notification, Special Super of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Mohammad Badrul Alam Molla has been made Superintendent of Police (SP) of Jhalakathi district, while Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shahriar Mohammad Miajy has been appointed as SP of Faridpur district. SP of Faridpur district Md Nazrul Islam has been transferred as Special Super of the CID. The notifications said the orders, issued in the public interest, will take effect immediately.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Sunday reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to the implementation of the ‘Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration’ as a GCM (Global Compact for Migration) champion country. She made the remark when newly appointed Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Bangladesh Dr Laura Nicole Tomm-Bonde met her at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the meeting, the State Minister highlighted the government’s priority of transforming Bangladesh’s migration sector into a skills-based, rights-based and well-governed system. She also expressed the government’s strong focus on skills development, recognition of qualifications, ethical recruitment, protection of migrant workers in destination countries, regular labour mobility pathways and the sustainable reintegration of returnee migrants, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The State Minister appreciated IOM’s continued technical support, assistance and cooperation in strengthening Bangladesh’s migration governance framework and called for enhanced IOM support to advance the government’s migration priorities. Dr Tomm-Bonde appreciated Bangladesh’s leadership in migration governance and reaffirmed IOM’s commitment to further strengthening cooperation with Bangladesh, prioritizing the government’s vision, agenda and commitments. Both sides expressed hope for further deepening the Bangladesh-IOM partnership in establishing effective migration governance in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Bank (BB) on Sunday announced export incentives and cash assistance rates for 43 sectors for the fiscal year FY2026-2027, aimed at encouraging the export trade. The new rates will be applicable to products shipped between July 1, 2026, and June 30, 2027, according to a circular issued by the Foreign Exchange Policy Department (FEPD) of the central bank. Bangla QR records Tk 22.02 crore transactions in 48 hours: Bangladesh Bank  The highest incentives have been allocated for frozen shrimp, furniture, diversified jute products, agro-processed products, potato, leather goods, light engineering products and halal product exports. According to the circular signed by BB Director Md. Harun-Ar-Rashid, cash assistance applications submitted by exporters must undergo periodic audits by external audit firms in compliance with the central bank’s guidelines. All other existing conditions regarding foreign exchange circulars will remain effective. As per the newly issued matrix, the highest incentive rate of 10 percent has been set for several high-priority sectors. These include diversified jute products, leather goods, agricultural and agro-processed products, potatoes, light engineering products, 100 percent halal meat and processed meat products, and accumulator batteries. Meanwhile, the readymade garments (RMG) and textile sectors will continue to receive tailored assistance. Alternative cash assistance for the export-oriented domestic textile sector in lieu of customs bond and duty drawback has been fixed at 1.50 percent. Exporters of textiles to the Eurozone will receive additional special assistance of 0.50 percent. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) within the export-oriented RMG sector (knitwear, woven, and sweaters) will enjoy an extra benefit of 3.0 percent. Special cash assistance of 0.30 percent has also been designated for the overall RMG sector. For new products or expansion into new markets (excluding the USA, Canada, EU, and UK), the textile sector will receive a 2.0 percent incentive. Among other major sectors, an 8.0 percent incentive has been allocated for furniture, carbon made from jute sticks, jute particle boards, seeds of crops and vegetables, agar and attar, and frozen shrimp (with up to 20 percent ice capping). Software, hardware, and IT-Enabled Services (ITES) exports will receive a 6.0 percent incentive, while individual-level freelancers exporting software and ITES will get 2.50 percent. Active Pharmaceuticals Ingredients (API) will receive 5.0 percent, and pharmaceutical products will enjoy a 6.0 percent cash incentive. The circular also specified fixed subsidy rates for companies located in Specialized Zones, including BEZA, BEPZA, and Hi-Tech Parks. Processing agricultural products under Type-A and Type-B enterprises in these zones will receive a 2.0 percent subsidy, while other designated sectors will receive incentives ranging from 0.30 percent to 2.0 percent.

Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on Sunday highlighted the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in promoting lasting peace and stability in the Middle East, emphasising that regional peace is essential for the prosperity and development of the region and beyond. He reiterated Bangladesh's profound condolences on the tragic demise of the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and underscored the solidarity of the people of Bangladesh with the brotherly people of Iran during this difficult time. Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Bangladesh Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi met the Foreign Minister, and the two sides exchanged views on issues of mutual interest, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Two schoolboys drowned while swimming in the Turag River in Tongi of Gazipur district on Sunday. The deceased were identified as Shamim, 11, a class VI student and son of Anisur Rahman, and Afnan, 13, a class VII student of Siraj Uddin Sarker Bidyaniketan & College and son of Saiful Islam of the Purba Arichpur Bou Bazar area. The incident took place in the Mirash Para area of the Turag River. Md Shaheen Alam, station officer of Tongi Fire Service, said the two boys along with their friend Shipon had gone to the river in Mirash Para area to swim. At one stage, Shamim and Afnan drowned, while Shipon managed to swim ashore. On information, divers from the local Fire Service rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies from the river.  

The death toll from the two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela last week has climbed to 2,954, while 16,592 people have been injured, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said on Saturday. In a message posted on his Telegram channel, Rodriguez said rescue teams have so far saved 6,462 people from areas affected by the disaster, including the central states of Aragua, Miranda and La Guaira, and the western states of Carabobo, Yaracuy and Falcon. Death toll nears 2,000 as questions mount over Venezuela's quake response He said 16,209 people have been left homeless. The earthquakes also damaged 856 buildings, while 190 structures collapsed. Authorities have established 80 temporary camps to provide shelter and support for displaced and affected residents. According to the latest update, 29,567 rescue workers, including 3,281 personnel from overseas, remain engaged in search-and-rescue operations. The statement added that Venezuela has recorded 942 aftershocks since the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck the country on June 24.

At least eight people, including four children, were shot on Saturday night in New York's Coney Island, according to an ABC News report, citing the New York Police Department. Those injured included two men, two women, and four children – aged 14, 12, seven and six. However, police did not immediately provide further details about the incident.  

The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs has invited applications and nominations for the Begum Rokeya Padak 2026, a prestigious national award conferred on women in recognition of outstanding contributions in a number of specific fields. A maximum five Bangladeshi women will receive the Begum Rokeya Padak 2026 for their remarkable contributions to women's education, women's rights, women's socio-economic development, women's awakening through literature and culture, rural development, and any other field determined by the government. Bangladeshi women who have made significant contributions in any of the specified fields are encouraged to apply using the prescribed application form, which is available on the ministry’s website (www.mowca.gov.bd) and the Department of Women Affairs' website (www.dwa.gov.bd). Applications or nominations submitted in any format other than the prescribed form will not be accepted. Interested candidates must mention the category for which they are applying and submit the soft copy of the completed application in MS Word format, using Nikosh font via email to [email protected] by July 31, 2026, said a PID handout. Besides, two hard copies of the application must be sent by post or submitted directly to the Secretary, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Bangladesh Secretariat, Dhaka, within the stipulated deadline.

BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu on Sunday urged party leaders and activists to remain patient, saying it is natural for them to feel restless after enduring 18 years of political repression and struggle. Dudu made the remarks at a prayer programme organised by the Jatiyatabadi Karmajibi Dal at the Jatiya Press Club for the recovery of three ailing senior BNP leaders: Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan and Rafiqul Islam Miah, as well as those injured during the July-August movement. "Our three senior leaders- Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan and Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah- are undergoing treatment. We have joined you in praying for their recovery, and I thank you for organising today's programme," he said. Dudu said BNP leaders and activists, along with their families, had suffered persecution during the past 18 years and were deprived of opportunities, including employment, under the previous government. "Those who deserved jobs could not get them during Sheikh Hasina's rule. So a sense of frustration is understandable. But our leaders and activists must remain patient," he said. He claimed the current government is sympathetic towards those who were subjected to injustice during the previous government. Calling for continued support for the government, Dudu said some groups are trying to magnify isolated incidents to create instability and urged everyone to remain vigilant against any attempts to create disorder. The programme was chaired by Jatiyatabadi Karmajibi Dal President Salahuddin Khan and conducted by its General Secretary Altaf Hossain Sardar.    

Bangla Academy president and eminent writer Professor Abul Quasem Fazlul Huq passed away on Sunday afternoon. He was 86. He breathed his last at around 2:30pm at the National Heart Foundation in Mirpur after falling sick at a family progrmame, said Serajul Islam (Seraj Salekeen), chairman of the Department of Bangla of Dhaka University. Abul Quasem Fazlul Huq was a distinguished literary critic and a professor who taught for 40 years in the Department of Bangla at the University of Dhaka. He graduated from the University of Dhaka in 1965 and completed his master's degree at the same university in 1966. He served as the convener of the Rashtrabhasha Bangla Rokkha Committee (State Language Bengali Protection Committee). He also served as the president of Bangla Academy. He received several awards for his contributions to literature and research, including the Bangla Academy Award (1981), the Alakta Memorial Literary Award (2004), the Bangladesh Writers’ Association Humayun Kabir Memorial Award (1974), and  Kolkata Little Magazine Library and Research Center Award (1991), according to Bangla Academy. His first book, Muktisangram was published in 1972. More than 250 research articles of Prof Huq were published in national and international journals. His works included 32 books, 1 translation and he edited a total of 23 books. His son, publisher Faisal Arefin Dipon, who owned Jagriti Prokashony, was killed by Islamist militants on October 31, 2015.

A 22-year-old man was killed in a lynch-mob attack over theft allegation in Fatullah area of Narayanganj district on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Jisan, son of Yunus alias Inu Mia of Paschim Masdair area. Family members of Jisan said Kawsar Ahmed, an organiser of a local voluntary organisation named Al Falah and imam of a mosque, along with some people picked up Jisan from his house accusing him of snatching a mobile phone around 10 pm. Later, they tied Jisan up and beat him up mercilessly, leaving him unconscious. Then he was handed over to his family. Family members of Jisan took him to 300-bed Khanpur Hospital where doctors declared him dead. As soon as his death news spread, family and friends of Jisan carried out vandalism with sticks in the area. Meanwhile, a video circulating after the incident shows Kawsar Ahmed urging people to unite, saying no one would be able to take action against them if they remained united, and suggesting there would be no legal consequences if public killed an offender. Mahbub Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Fatullah Model Police Station, said the body bore injury marks. "The incident is under investigation. Legal action will be taken against those involved," the OC said.  

The country's stock markets witnessed a broad-based rally on the first trading day of the week, with share prices of most listed companies rising and overall turnover increasing on both bourses. At the end of the day's trading on Sunday, the Dhaka Stock Exchange's (DSE) benchmark index DSEX rose 43 points. The Shariah-based index DSES gained 9 points, while the blue-chip index DS30 advanced 29 points. Of the issues traded, 177 companies saw their share prices rise, 153 declined, and 59 remained unchanged. Turnover on the DSE stood at Tk 1,530 crore in shares and units. In the block market, shares worth Tk 48 crore of 53 companies changed hands. Unique Hotel and Resorts PLC topped the gainers' list, posting nearly a 10 percent rise, while Familytex (BD) Limited was the worst performer, losing around 8 percent. The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also closed higher, with its overall index CASPI adding 8 points. Of the traded companies, 141 advanced, 96 declined, and 19 remained unchanged. Total turnover on the CSE stood at Tk 66 crore, up from Tk 60 crore in the previous session. Phoenix Finance 1st Mutual Fund, Eastern Cables Limited, and IFIL Islamic Mutual Fund-1 led the gainers, each rising about 10 percent, while Meghna Life Insurance PLC was the top loser, shedding nearly 10 percent.

Norway coach Stale Solbakken has reminded his players against being overwhelmed by the occasion of playing against five-time champion Brazil in Sunday's World Cup round of 16 game. "We need to play the match, not the circumstances," he told reporters in New Jersey on Saturday. "We need to make sure that we don't play according to the occasion, but that we simply play the match. "Obviously, Brazil is the favourite, but I also said that I don't think they are big favourites, which they maybe had been some years ago, or two, three, four years ago. Last time the two sides clashed was in the 1998 World Cup, where Norway edged Brazil 2-1 in a group game. Norway has two wins and two draws in their previous four meetings with Brazil. "Now we have had a very good run for a very long time, and we have great confidence," said Solbakken.

The United Nations has warned of a worsening drinking water shortage in Afghanistan's capital Kabul, saying the crisis poses serious challenges to the city's future development, local media TOLOnews reported on Sunday. According to the report, declining groundwater levels, rapid population growth and climate change have significantly intensified pressure on Kabul's water resources, making the city one of the worst-hit urban areas in the region. Officials said efforts are underway to address the water shortage through several major infrastructure projects. Kabul has struggled with drinking water shortages for years. Despite repeated efforts by the authorities to improve water supply, the problem remains a major challenge for the city's growing population, the report added.  

Seven children died from measles-like symptoms in 24 hours until 8:00am on Sunday, bringing Bangladesh’s combined tally of confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths to 738 this year. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has classified the latest deaths as suspected measles fatalities. With the latest update, the number of suspected measles deaths in the country has risen to 645, while the number of laboratory-confirmed measles deaths remained unchanged at 93. A total of 925 new suspected measles cases were reported during the period, bringing the cumulative number of suspected cases nationwide to 105,618. Meanwhile, 106 new confirmed measles cases were recorded, raising the total number of laboratory-confirmed infections to 12,632. Since March 15, a total of 88,844 patients with suspected measles have been hospitalised across the country, of whom 85,122 have recovered, according to DGHS data.    

Heavy rainfall lashed different parts coastal districts  on Sunday as a well-marked low over the northwest Bay of Bengal intensified into depression , leaving the sea rough and prompting authorities to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 at the country’s maritime ports. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the well-marked low over Northwest Bay and adjoining North Odisha-West Bengal coast has intensified into a monsoon depression. Under its influence, incessant rain began across the district from Sunday morning. The Bay of Bengal near Kuakata remained rough, with large waves crashing onto the shore, while water levels in rivers and estuaries rose slightly above normal, reports UNB Patuakhakli correspondent. The Met Office warned that squally weather may affect the seaports, the north Bay and adjoining coastal areas. Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the north Bay have been advised to stay close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice. Meanwhile, the weather office also forecast temporary gusty or squally winds at speeds of 45-60 km/h over the regions of Barishal, Patuakhali, Khulna, Cumilla, Noakhali, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Sylhet and Mymensingh. Inland river ports in these regions have been asked to display Warning Signal No. 1 Intermittent drizzle and humid weather continued to affect the coastal district of Bagerhat on Sunday under the influence of a monsoon low over the Bay of Bengal, disrupting normal life. The sky has remained overcast since Sunday morning, with light rain occurring at intervals across the district. The sea has turned rough, while strong winds have been sweeping through the Dublar Char area in the Bay of Bengal. Meanwhile, several thousand fishermen have returned to different coastal areas, including Bagerhat, with their fishing trawlers as the sea remains rough. Locals expressed concern that further increases in river water levels, coupled with strong waves, could damage vulnerable embankments along riverbanks in different parts of the district.  

Police arrested a 40-year-old man on Saturday morning for allegedly raping a ninth-grader in Monirampur upazila of Jessore district. The arrestee is Sameer, son of Nowsher Ali, a resident of Jaynagar village under Monirampur municipality. Police said a group of local youths intercepted the girl in a secluded area when she was on her way to a private tutoring session and raped her. The victim later returned home and informed her family members about the ordeal. Following the incident, the victim's brother filed a case with  Monirampur Police Station naming three individuals as accused. Abu Sayeed, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Monirampur Police Station, said police launched a drive and arrested Sameer immediately after the complaint was lodged. The victim has been sent to Jessore Medical College Hospital for a medical examination and collection of necessary forensic evidence, he said. Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects, the OC added.

Iran's senior leaders and several sons of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appeared in public on Sunday to attend funeral prayers in Tehran, marking one of the first major public gatherings of top officials since the recent war with Israel. The event also saw renewed calls from mourners and speakers for revenge against U.S. President Donald Trump. The appearance of Iran's top leadership before hundreds of thousands of mourners highlighted growing confidence about their security after the conflict, during which Israeli airstrikes reportedly killed the 86-year-old Khamenei, several members of his family and other senior officials. During the war, Israeli forces also targeted other high-profile Iranian figures, in some cases reportedly using their public appearances to locate them for attacks. However, Iran's new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, did not appear at the ceremony. He is believed to be in hiding after reportedly being wounded in the strike that killed his father. Israel has also threatened to target him as Iran continues negotiations with the United States on a permanent end to the conflict and issues related to the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route. Among the mourners was 42-year-old nurse Ziba Naderi, who said the country should follow the guidance of its new leader. "I heard the calls for revenge, but our leader should decide what we need to do," she said. "We must follow his instructions." Funeral prayers at Tehran's Grand Mosalla were led by 97-year-old Shiite cleric Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani. Several senior Iranian officials attended the ceremony, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Revolutionary Guard commander Gen. Ahmad Vahidi and Esmail Qaani, head of the Quds Force. Khamenei's sons Masoud, Meysam and Mostafa also appeared publicly for the first time since the war. The venue displayed posters and graffiti calling for the deaths of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Poet Mohammad Rasouli, who hosted the event before the prayers, led chants of "Death to America!" and "Death to Israel!" Speaking through loudspeakers, he questioned why Trump was "still alive," drawing loud cheers from the crowd. It was one of the strongest public threats against the U.S. president made during the funeral events. At the same time, Trump was speaking in Washington during celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. Referring to recent U.S. military actions, Trump said, "We've had tremendous success. You look at Venezuela, you look at Iran. We wiped it out, wiped out their military." Sunday's funeral drew a much larger crowd than Saturday's events. Thousands of mourners dressed in black carried banners praising Khamenei while some called for retaliation against Trump. "I came here to demand revenge," said 29-year-old grocery worker Gholamreza Sabooni. "They killed our leader, so Trump should be killed." U.S. authorities have monitored Iranian threats against Trump and other American officials for years, particularly after Trump ordered the 2020 killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the Quds Force. Iran has repeatedly denied plotting to assassinate Trump, although hard-line groups have frequently circulated propaganda depicting him as a target. During the recent conflict, Trump also warned that the United States could destroy Iran's civilization if tensions escalated further. Iranian authorities said Khamenei's body will be taken to several cities in Iran and neighboring Iraq before being driven through the streets of Tehran on Monday. National mourning will continue until Thursday, when he will be buried at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, his birthplace. Authorities have closed roads, restricted airspace and suspended many daily activities during the mourning period. No official estimate of attendance at the funeral ceremonies has been released, though similar memorial events were also held across Iran. Negotiations with the United States aimed at reaching a permanent end to the war have been postponed until after the funeral ceremonies. Many mourners said Iran should maintain a firm stance in future diplomacy. "Our foreign policy should ensure that the blood of our martyred leader is respected and that no country can act against Iran without facing a serious response," said mourner Mohammad Reza Sharifi.

At least 438 people were killed and 561 injured in 472 road accidents across Bangladesh in June, according to a report released by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF). The victims included 44 women and 56 children, said the organization in a press release on Sunday. The report said 145 motorcycle crashes claimed 134 lives, accounting for 30.59 percent of the total fatalities. Among other deceased, 91 were pedestrians and 57 drivers and transport assistants . The RSF said the report was compiled based on information published by nine national newspapers, 17 national and regional online news portals, various electronic media outlets, and its own data. During the same period, nine waterway accidents left seven people dead and four injured, while 21 railway accidents claimed 18 lives and injured seven others, according to the report. Vehicle-wise data showed that motorcyclists and pillion riders accounted for the highest number of fatalities, followed by passengers of three-wheelers, trucks, covered vans and pickup vehicles, buses, locally made vehicles, and rickshaws and bicycles. According to the RSF, 151 crashes, or 32 percent of the total, occurred on national highways, while 194 accidents (41.10 percent) took place on regional roads. Another 64 crashes (13.55 percent) occurred on rural roads and 57 (12.07 percent) on urban roads. The report said loss of vehicle control was the leading cause of crashes, followed by head-on collisions, pedestrian knockdowns, and rear-end collisions. In the capital, 32 road accidents left 24 people dead and 49 injured during the month. The report also highlighted the occupational profile of the victims, saying they included 58 students, alongside police personnel, teachers, journalists, doctors, engineers, lawyers, businesspeople, NGO workers, bank and insurance employees, sales representatives, political activists, garment workers, construction workers, religious leaders, and others. The RSF identified defective vehicles and roads, speeding, reckless and unskilled driving, long working hours and poor wages for drivers, the movement of slow-moving vehicles on highways, reckless motorcycle riding by young people, poor compliance with traffic laws, weak traffic management, institutional shortcomings at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), and extortion in the public transport sector as the major causes of road crashes. The report recommended reconstituting the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) and place the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC), and Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) under its authority. The RSF said a safer road transport system could be achieved through updated policies, improved infrastructure and technology, and greater public awareness, adding that strong political commitment would be essential to implementing these measures.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions during next 72 hours commencing 1 pm on Sunday. “Under the influence of the Monsoon Depression over Northwest Bay and adjoining North Odisha-West Bengal coast, heavy (44-88mm) to very heavy (88mm) rainfall is likely to occur at places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions,” said a Met office bulletin. Due to heavy to very heavy rainfall temporary waterlogging may occur at places over Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas and landslide may occur at places over the hilly regions of Chattogram division.  

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday directed the authorities concerned to prepare an action plan to increase Bangladesh's carbon credits by reducing carbon emissions and making better use of opportunities in the international carbon markets. He gave the directive at a meeting on climate change at the Prime Minister's Office at Secretariat where he also outlined a number of measures to help the country earn more carbon credits, said Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu. The Prime Minister stressed the need to expand the use of renewable energy, promote environmentally friendly technologies in industries, improve energy efficiency, protect forests and increase tree plantation to enhance carbon absorption. He also instructed the authorities to prepare a realistic plan to tap Bangladesh's potential in the international carbon markets. Tarique emphasised ensuring transparency in carbon credit management, building a reliable database and strengthening coordination with international organisations. He also directed the formation of a committee to improve coordination among the ministries and agencies concerned to help Bangladesh earn more carbon credits. Officials at the meeting said effective measures to reduce carbon emissions would increase Bangladesh's chances of earning carbon credits in line with international standards. A carbon credit is an internationally recognised unit awarded for reducing or removing one metric tonne of carbon dioxide or its equivalent greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere. Under the carbon trading system, countries or organisations that reduce emissions through afforestation, renewable energy, improved energy efficiency or cleaner technologies can earn carbon credits, which can then be sold to countries or companies that exceed their permitted emission limits. State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam, Prime Minister's Adviser on Education, Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment and Labour Mahdi Amin, Special Assistant on Health Dr SM Ziauddin Haider, Special Assistant on Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr Saimum Parvez, secretaries of the relevant ministries and senior officials attended the meeting.

A Ukrainian attack on Russian-occupied Crimea killed one person and injured two others early Sunday, according to Moscow-installed officials, as Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held separate phone calls with US President Donald Trump on efforts to end the war. Sergei Aksyonov, the Russia-appointed governor of Crimea, said the attack struck the northern part of the peninsula. One of the injured was reported to be in serious condition. He did not provide further details. In recent weeks, Ukraine has intensified long-range strikes on military and infrastructure targets in Crimea as part of its efforts to isolate the strategically important peninsula, which Russia seized and illegally annexed in 2014. Western officials and analysts say Ukraine's growing ability to strike deep inside Russian-controlled territory has increased pressure on the Kremlin, while Russia's battlefield advances have slowed in recent months. The latest attack came shortly after Zelenskyy and Putin held separate telephone conversations with Trump. In a post on X, Zelenskyy said he congratulated Trump on the 250th anniversary of US independence and discussed the situation on the battlefield. "There is a real prospect of ending this war, and America's determination will be crucial," Zelenskyy wrote, adding that the two leaders agreed to continue discussions in person during the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara. Meanwhile, the Kremlin described Putin's nearly 90-minute phone conversation with Trump on Saturday as "constructive." Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said Putin also congratulated Trump and the American people on the 250th anniversary of US independence. The call was the fourth conversation between the two leaders this year. According to Ushakov, Trump reaffirmed his willingness to help bring about a quick end to the fighting and support efforts to reach a peaceful settlement. He said Trump's envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, would continue mediation efforts and remain ready to visit Moscow. Ushakov said Putin again stressed that Russia prefers a diplomatic solution, provided its long-standing demands are taken into account. At the same time, Putin accused Ukraine and its European allies of trying to prolong and escalate the conflict, claiming they have misjudged the situation on the battlefield. He also told Trump that Russian forces continue to make gains, capturing one settlement after another. Putin specifically claimed that Russian troops had captured the Ukrainian stronghold of Kostyantynivka, describing it as an important step toward taking full control of Ukraine's Donetsk region. Ukraine has rejected Russia's claim that Kostyantynivka has fallen.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday urged the President Guard Regiment (PGR) to strike a balance between ensuring his security and maintaining public access, saying security arrangements should never make people feel detached from the head of government. "As the head of a democratic government, I want to continue placing my trust in and relying on the confidence and love of people. Security arrangements should not distance the head of government from the people," he said while addressing the 51st founding anniversary PGR at Dhaka Cantonment. The Prime Minister said he earlier shared the same message at the anniversary programme of the Special Security Force (SSF), adding that it was equally relevant for PGR personnel, who are also responsible for the security of the President and the Prime Minister. As head of the government, Tarique said he frequently attends public rallies and official programmes both in Dhaka and across the country’s remote areas, where PGR members are required to perform security duties. He said providing security at such events with large public gatherings is always challenging and complex. "While carrying out these assignments, you have to strike a balance between maintaining the security of the Head of Government and ensuring the comfort and convenience of citizens in their daily lives. Your security strategies must therefore be designed with this balance in mind,” Tarique said. The Prime Minister added, "My appeal to you is that security arrangements should be planned in such a way that people do not feel disconnected from their Prime Minister." Tarique also stressed that modern security forces must be ready to deal with emerging threats, including cyber warfare, electronic warfare, drone attacks and information warfare. He said these evolving challenges require not only the PGR but all security forces to receive modern training and strengthen their technological capabilities. "As a specialised force, the PGR cannot afford to fall behind in courage, skills, tactics or the use of modern technology," the Prime Minister said. He said the government has already taken steps to further modernise specialised forces such as the PGR and the Special Security Force (SSF). The Prime Minister urged every member of the PGR to uphold the highest standards of courage, integrity, loyalty, professionalism and discipline while strictly following the chain of command. Recalling the sacrifice of PGR personnel who were killed while protecting former and his father President Ziaur Rahman during the assassination at Chattogram Circuit House on May 30, 1981, Tarique paid tribute to them and prayed for the eternal peace of their souls. He said their supreme sacrifice reflected the force's unwavering loyalty, dedication and commitment to protecting the country's highest office and would continue to inspire future generations of PGR personnel. The Prime Minister also congratulated the PGR on being nominated for the National Standard award this year in recognition of its discipline and professionalism. He said the Bangladesh Armed Forces symbolise the courage and pride of the nation and expressed confidence that the country's sovereignty would remain secure as long as the armed forces uphold patriotism, professionalism and discipline. The Prime Minister wished all members of the PGR success and continued prosperity on the regiment's 51st founding anniversary.

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number No 3 as the well-marked low over Northwest Bay and adjoining North Odisha-West Bengal coast has intensified into a monsoon depression. It is now lies over the same area at 12 noon Sunday about 510 km West-Southwest of Chattogram, 520 km West of Cox's Bazar, 285 km West-Southwest of Mongla and 340 km West-Southwest of Payra. It is likely to move West-Northwestwards and crossed North Odisha coast during next 24 hours. Under its influence squally weather may affect the Maritime Ports, North Bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh. Maximum sustained wind speed within 44 km of the Depression centre is about 40 kph rising to 50 kph in gusts or squalls. Sea will remain moderate near the Depression centre. All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to take shelter immediately and remain in shelter till further notice.      

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has married his longtime partner Gauri Spratt in a private ceremony at his residence in Bandra, Mumbai, after the couple dated for more than two years. According to NDTV, the couple officially registered their marriage by signing the required legal documents during the intimate ceremony. Aamir, 61, publicly confirmed his relationship with Gauri on June 4, saying they had known each other for 25 years before beginning their relationship two years ago. The wedding was attended by close family members, including Aamir's three children and Gauri's son. Aamir was previously married to film producer Reena Dutta, with whom he has two children, Junaid Khan and Ira Khan. He later married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005. The couple separated in 2021 but continue to co-parent their son, Azad. Gauri, who keeps a low public profile, also has a six-year-old son. Around 150 guests, including relatives who travelled from abroad, attended the wedding. Originally from Bengaluru, Gauri is the daughter of Rita Spratt, a former salon owner. According to her LinkedIn profile, she studied at Blue Mountain School and completed a fashion course in Styling and Photography at the University of the Arts London in 2004. Commerce Secretary Md Ataur Rahman Khan on Sunday stressed the need for stronger coordination, greater inter-agency cooperation and enhanced leadership skills among field-level team leaders to make the country's market monitoring system more effective, coordinated and technology-driven. He made the remarks while presiding over a workshop titled "Capacity Building for Team Leaders Engaged in Market Monitoring" at the Ministry of Commerce conference room in Dhaka. The commerce secretary said all agencies involved in market surveillance are working toward a common objective, adding that the main challenge lies not in capacity constraints but in ensuring effective coordination, mutual cooperation and prompt decision-making at the field level. He said market monitoring activities are carried out by the Ministry of Commerce and its subordinate agency the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection. Several other government ministries, departments and agencies are also involved, making market oversight a shared responsibility, he said. He said the effectiveness of the system depends on rapid field-level response, coordinated operations and responsible execution of assigned duties. Addressing the team leaders, the commerce secretary said leadership must be efficient, timely and result-oriented, urging them to resolve any coordination gaps quickly to ensure smooth implementation of market monitoring activities. The secretary said the ministry would soon develop a Power App, introduce an AI-based model for the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), and further upgrade the existing market monitoring application in line with the minister's directives. He said these initiatives are expected to make field-level market surveillance more efficient and data-driven. Additional Secretary (IIT) of the Ministry of Commerce Shibir Bichitra Barua and Acting Director General of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection Sebastian Rema attended the workshop as special guests, along with senior officials from the ministry and the directorate.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed left Dhaka New York, USA, to attend the 5th United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS V), to be held at the United Nations Headquarters. He departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 1:40 am by an Emirates flight, according to an official release. The two-day summit, scheduled for July 7-8, will bring together police leaders from around the world to discuss key issues related to UN policing and peacekeeping. The Home Minister is leading a five-member Bangladesh delegation that includes Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir. During the visit, the Minister will participate in the opening session and various plenary sessions of the 'UNCOPS' summit to be held at the United Nations General Assembly Hall on July 08. This year’s summit will feature three major plenary sessions titled: Vision for the Future of UN Police, Innovations and New Technologies in UN Policing, and Enhancing International Cooperation to Address Transitional Challenges. He will also attend a high-level dinner organised as a sideline event of the summit. During his stay in New York, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed will hold bilateral meetings with Atul Khare, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support; Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations; and Rosemary A. DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs. He will also participate in important bilateral meetings with the Home Ministers of various countries. These meetings will focus on Bangladesh's contributions to UN peacekeeping operations, the participation and capacity building of Bangladesh Police, the deployment of specialized police units, the future priorities of peacekeeping operations, and various matters of mutual interest. The minister scheduled to return to Dhaka on July 12.

A Paris appeals court is set to deliver a key ruling on Tuesday in Marine Le Pen's embezzlement case, with the decision likely to determine whether the French far-right leader can contest the 2027 presidential election. Le Pen, 57, is appealing a March 2025 conviction that found her and several members of her National Rally party guilty of misusing European Parliament funds. Prosecutors said money meant to pay parliamentary assistants was instead used to pay party staff between 2004 and 2016. The lower court handed Le Pen a prison sentence, which has been suspended while her appeal is heard, and banned her from holding elected office for five years. She denies any wrongdoing and hopes to make her fourth run for the French presidency. If the ban remains in place, National Rally president Jordan Bardella, 30, is expected to become the party's candidate, potentially changing the race to succeed President Emmanuel Macron. Acquittal would clear the way The best outcome for Le Pen would be a full acquittal, allowing her to run without legal obstacles. During the five-week appeal hearing earlier this year, Le Pen admitted there had been "a mistake" but insisted she believed it was legal for some parliamentary assistants to also work for her party, then known as the National Front. She said there was never any attempt to hide the arrangement and argued that European Parliament officials had never warned the party that its hiring practices might violate the rules. Her lawyer, Rodolphe Bosselut, urged the judges to allow Le Pen to rebuild her political career. Even if she is cleared, prosecutors could still challenge the verdict before France's highest court, the Court of Cassation. A shorter ban could keep her in the race The appeals court could also uphold Le Pen's conviction but reduce her ban from public office to two years or less, or remove it altogether. Because the original ban took effect immediately in March last year, a shorter ban would end before the first round of the presidential election, scheduled for April 2027. However, Le Pen has said that even if she is legally allowed to run, any prison sentence, electronic monitoring or other court restrictions could make it impossible to campaign across the country. "If I'm allowed to be a candidate but cannot campaign freely, then it wouldn't be possible," she told French broadcaster LCI this week. She said she could not run a national campaign if she needed a judge's permission to travel or attend campaign events. Court could impose a tougher punishment Prosecutors have asked the appeals court to sentence Le Pen to four years in prison, with three years suspended, and to keep the five-year ban on holding elected office. They accuse her of leading a system that diverted European Union funds for the benefit of her party. Although prosecutors did not request it, the appeals court could again decide that any ban should take immediate effect. Le Pen would still be able to appeal to the Court of Cassation, although it remains unclear whether such an appeal would suspend the sentence. France's highest court has previously said it would try to issue a final ruling before the 2027 presidential election if it accepts the case. Le Pen says she cannot wait until the last minute Le Pen has said she will not delay deciding whether to run because a presidential campaign requires months of preparation. She warned that lengthy legal proceedings could effectively prevent her from entering the race, even if she is later cleared. France's presidential campaign is expected to begin gathering momentum in September before intensifying early next year. Presidential candidates must also secure the endorsements of 500 elected officials to qualify for the ballot, making it difficult for parties to replace a candidate late in the campaign. "If I'm prevented from running but the Court of Cassation rules in my favor three or four months later, it will already be too late to mount a proper presidential campaign," Le Pen said in an earlier interview with RTL radio.

The government has banned the use of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's image on banners, festoons and billboards prepared for official programmes. The Cabinet Division on Sunday issued a circular in this regard with immediate effect. According to the circular, the Prime Minister's photo whether in 3D or any other form must not be used on banners, festoons or billboards prepared for any government programme. Instead, ministries, divisions and government agencies have been asked to give priority to the subject matter of the event while preparing publicity materials. The circular, signed by Deputy Secretary Tania Afrezi, said banners, festoons and billboards should contain only necessary and relevant information and be designed in a way that clearly reflects the purpose, message and theme of the event. The Cabinet Division described the matter as highly important and instructed all ministries, divisions and government offices to implement the directive immediately. Contacted, Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu said Tarique Rahman noticed his own photographs on banners and festoons prepared for a ministry's programme marking a national day while travelling from his residence to the Secretariat on Wednesday morning. The Prime Minister later instructed the Cabinet Secretary to ensure that his photograph is no longer used in publicity materials for government observances or programmes organised by ministries. Following the Prime Minister's directive, Shiplu said the Cabinet Division issued the circular banning the use of his image on banners, festoons and billboards for official events.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte heads into this week's NATO summit in Turkey facing a new challenge as US President Donald Trump shifts his focus from defense spending to demanding greater "loyalty" from America's allies. Since taking office nearly two years ago, Rutte has spent much of his time trying to keep the United States committed to the 32-member military alliance. He has often praised Trump in an effort to ease tensions over the president's repeated threats to pull the US out of NATO. For years, Trump's main complaint was that European allies were not spending enough on defense. At last year's NATO summit, member countries agreed to significantly increase military spending, bringing it closer to US levels as a share of national economic output. But NATO now faces a different challenge: turning that extra money into stronger military capabilities, especially as European countries grow increasingly concerned about the threat from Russia. During a White House meeting last month, Rutte presented Trump with a chart titled "The Trump Trillion," highlighting that European allies and Canada have invested $1.2 trillion in defense since 2017. However, Trump appeared unimpressed. He criticized some NATO allies for refusing to join the US and Israel in military action against Iran, saying he wanted "loyalty" rather than financial contributions. "We don't need their money. We don't need anything. I just want loyalty," Trump said. Current artificial intelligence systems such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are powerful tools for writing, coding and solving maths problems, but leading AI researchers say they still fall far short of understanding the real world. One of them is Yann LeCun, a pioneer in artificial intelligence and former chief AI scientist at Meta, who argues that today's AI cannot match even the basic understanding of a rat when it comes to interacting with the physical world. "We don't have robots that are nearly as good at understanding the physical world as a rat," LeCun said during the VivaTech technology conference in Paris. After leaving Meta in 2025, LeCun founded Advanced Machine Intelligence Labs (AMI Labs) with the aim of developing a new generation of AI capable of handling real-world situations, such as household chores and robotics. According to LeCun, large language models (LLMs), the technology behind ChatGPT and similar chatbots, are excellent at tasks such as writing text, coding and solving mathematical problems because these tasks are well-defined. However, he believes they are not designed to understand how the real world works. "They basically accumulate knowledge and reproduce it, but they are not particularly smart because they don't have a true understanding," he said. LeCun argues that current AI models rely on statistical patterns rather than reasoning about physical reality. As an example, he said if a pen is balanced upright and released, even a young child knows it will fall over. However, no one can predict exactly which direction it will fall because the outcome depends on many unpredictable factors. An LLM may attempt to predict one specific outcome based on its training data, but such a prediction would likely be wrong because it lacks a real understanding of the physical world. To address this limitation, AMI Labs is developing a new AI system called Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA). Instead of trying to predict every possible detail, JEPA creates simplified representations of the real world, allowing AI to focus only on the information that matters. In the pen example, the system would recognise that predicting the exact direction of the fall is unnecessary. The approach has attracted strong investor interest. Earlier this year, AMI Labs raised more than $1 billion in seed funding, one of Europe's largest early-stage investment rounds. Investors include US chipmaker Nvidia and the investment fund managing Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' private wealth. Researchers say building AI that understands the physical world has become increasingly important as companies invest billions of dollars in humanoid robots. Although robots have become more capable, teaching them to safely perform everyday household tasks such as ironing clothes or loading dishwashers remains difficult and expensive. LeCun believes current language models are unlikely to solve that problem. "LLMs are largely hopeless for robotics," he said, rejecting claims that simply making today's AI models larger will eventually produce superhuman intelligence. His views are shared by many AI researchers. Ingmar Posner, Professor of Applied Artificial Intelligence at the University of Oxford and director of its Applied AI Lab, believes future AI systems must be able to explain their decisions and understand cause-and-effect relationships. "You need models that can answer questions like: What matters? What causes what? What would happen if I took a different action?" Posner said. Posner and his research team have spent the past four years developing an alternative approach known as World Models. The concept has existed for decades but gained renewed attention after a 2018 research paper by David Ha and Jurgen Schmidhuber suggested AI could learn by building internal simulations of the world. Since then, companies including Google DeepMind have expanded research in this area. One version of Google's Dreamer World Model learned to collect diamonds in the video game Minecraft by imagining possible future scenarios before making decisions. Posner's team is developing what he calls a "mechanistic world model," designed to organise knowledge so AI can efficiently recall, combine and update information when needed. However, he cautioned that predicting when these new systems will become practical is difficult. He noted that only a few years before ChatGPT was launched in late 2022, many researchers believed similar technology was still decades away. Several major AI companies are now investing in world-model research. Google DeepMind is developing its Genie model, London-based Wayve has built a system called Gaia, while AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li founded World Labs in San Francisco in 2023 to develop another new AI architecture. LeCun said AMI Labs plans to continue refining its AI system throughout this year and hopes to deploy it first in industrial applications next year. If successful, he believes the technology could eventually evolve into general-purpose AI systems capable of handling a wide variety of real-world tasks with minimal additional training. Despite concerns about increasingly capable robots, LeCun believes humans will continue to play the central role. "We're still going to need humans to figure out what questions to ask, what to build and what to create," he said. He expects future AI systems, even those that may surpass humans in some abilities, to function as assistants rather than replacements. "Our interaction with future AI systems, even if they are smarter than us, will be like the relationship between a business leader or political leader and a team of highly capable assistants," he said. President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Sunday said the government is committed to transforming the armed forces into a modern, technology-driven, four-dimensional force to effectively address evolving challenges. The President said the government's "Bangladesh First" policy has been adopted to strengthen defence planning, preparedness, deterrence capability and the country's overall national security strategy, he said while addressing the 51st founding anniversary of the President Guard Regiment (PGR) at Dhaka Cantonment. "Implementation of these policies and initiatives will enhance the overall capability and efficiency of the armed forces. The country's defence system will become more efficient, modern and stronger. At the same time, the operational capability of the PGR as a specialised unit of the Bangladesh Army will also be strengthened," he said. The President said the security of the Head of State, the Head of Government and other important national and foreign dignitaries is closely linked to national security and the country's prestige. He stressed the need for stronger coordination among law enforcement agencies, intelligence organisations and relevant ministries to ensure an even more robust security system. "I know you are performing your duties in coordination with one another. I hope this understanding and cooperation will be further strengthened in the future," he said. The President also urged PGR personnel to give the highest priority to the protection of important personalities while ensuring that security arrangements do not hinder their normal interaction and communication with public. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Sunday warned taxpayers to remain vigilant against fraudsters impersonating tax officials and attempting to extort money by falsely claiming that their tax files have been selected for audit. In a statement , the NBR said it has recently noticed that a group of scammers was contacting taxpayers from various mobile phone numbers, falsely informing them that their tax files were under audit. The fraudsters were allegedly promising to exempt taxpayers from audit or threatening them with legal complications unless they paid money, the revenue authority said. The NBR clarified that no official or employee contacts taxpayers regarding tax audits through personal mobile phone numbers or any unauthorised communication channel. If a tax file is selected for audit, the taxpayer is informed only through a formal written notice in accordance with the law, it said. The revenue authority also reminded taxpayers that any outstanding tax or related fees must be paid only to the state treasury through the prescribed government payment system. It stressed that no NBR official is authorised to receive payments personally or through mobile financial services such as bKash, Rocket or Nagad, or via personal bank accounts. The NBR advised taxpayers who receive suspicious phone calls, text messages or emails claiming to be related to tax audits not to be misled and to verify the information immediately by contacting the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Taxes in their respective tax zone. It also urged taxpayers to report anyone demanding money while impersonating an NBR official to the nearest law enforcement agency and to preserve the fraudster’s phone number as evidence.

Chinese researchers have discovered a new Jurassic bird fossil that is changing scientists' understanding of how birds evolved shorter tails, according to a study published online in the journal Science Advances on Thursday. The fossil, named Zhengheornis buyu, was discovered by a joint research team from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Geological Sciences in east China's Fujian Province. Researchers found that the bird had a short tail made up of only 15 shortened tail vertebrae but lacked a fused pygostyle, a bone found at the end of the tails of modern birds. By comparison, other long-tailed ancient birds had many more tail vertebrae. The pygostyle is formed when several tail vertebrae fuse together. It is a key feature of modern birds, helping support feathers and playing an important role in flight. The shortening of the tail is considered one of the most significant physical changes that occurred as dinosaurs evolved into birds. Scientists said the newly discovered bird weighed between 74 and 163 grams and measured about 20 centimetres in length, making it the smallest long-tailed bird fossil known so far. Its unusual mix of features, a shortened tail without a fused pygostyle, makes the fossil especially important because it challenges the long-standing belief that no such transitional form existed during bird evolution. Earlier fossil evidence suggested that the first birds with a pygostyle appeared during the Late Jurassic period around 150 million years ago, while other birds and their dinosaur ancestors still had long tails. The researchers also said the discovery supports the idea that shrinking body size was a major factor in the evolution of birds from dinosaurs. Their findings suggest that some early birds became much smaller much faster than scientists had previously thought.

Three children died after a recreational boat capsized during a powerful storm on Geneva Lake in Wisconsin, as severe weather and a heat wave disrupted July Fourth celebrations across the United States, leaving hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without electricity. Authorities said all four children aboard the boat were wearing life jackets when the privately owned motorboat overturned on Friday during a sudden storm in Walworth County, a popular holiday destination for visitors from the Chicago area. Officials said the boat, carrying 10 people including four children, tried to reach safety before being hit by strong winds and large waves. The vessel took on water, capsized and sank. Six adults and one child were rescued, but three children were later pulled from the lake after an extensive search. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, they could not be revived, police said. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency are investigating the incident. In a statement, Lake Geneva police said the tragedy was caused by a "sudden and severe storm" that quickly created dangerous conditions on the lake. Following the storm, Lake Geneva Mayor Todd Krause declared a local emergency. One person suffered minor injuries after being struck by a falling tree, while fallen trees and downed power lines blocked several roads. On a granite cliff overlooking a river about two hours west of Kyiv, hundreds of outdoor enthusiasts gathered for Ukraine's largest climbing and music festival, where adventure, live performances and community spirit provided a brief escape from the realities of war. Held last week in the Zhytomyr region, the Stoned Climbers festival brought together more than 500 participants for rock climbing, camping, swimming and stand-up paddleboarding during the day, while live bands and DJs entertained crowds in the evenings. Despite the festive atmosphere, reminders of the ongoing war were never far away. Visitors received repeated air raid alerts on their phones, soldiers on leave quietly mingled with the crowd, and organizers donated all proceeds from this year's event to support Ukraine's Azov Brigade. Unlike last year, however, no Russian drones or missiles flew over the campsite on their way to Kyiv. The volunteer-led festival was launched in 2023 by around 15 friends inspired by the climbing culture of Yosemite National Park in the United States, where rock climbing has long been associated with camping, outdoor living and a close connection with nature. Festival co-founder Dmytro Isaienko said they wanted to show that climbing is more than a competitive sport. "We realized climbing could be much more than just a sport. It's a lifestyle connected to nature, camping and the mountains," said the 39-year-old. The founders also wanted to make climbing more accessible rather than something only for elite athletes. Their first festival attracted around 150 people. This year, attendance grew to more than 500, most of them beginners or amateur climbers. Isaienko said the festival has taken on greater meaning during the war by giving people a chance to reconnect, learn new skills and take a break from the pressures of daily life. "People need to step away from the war for a while, leave Kyiv and spend time together," he said. At the climbing site, instructors helped first-time participants put on harnesses, prepare their equipment and make their way up the 25-meter-high granite wall. Whenever someone reached the top, fellow climbers and spectators applauded their achievement. Among the newcomers was 21-year-old Liliia Karpach, who traveled from Ukraine's western Lviv region to attend her first Stoned Climbers festival. She said she wanted to climb on real rock again and meet members of the climbing community. Karpach described climbing as both a physical and mental challenge and encouraged others to give it a try. "If you're nervous about coming alone, bring some friends. Even if none of you has climbed before, you'll still enjoy the experience together," she said. At first glance, it looks harmless. Standing two to three feet tall with lush green leaves and clusters of tiny white flowers, the plant resembles coriander. But beneath its innocent appearance lies a growing threat to agriculture, public health and livestock. Parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus), one of the world’s most invasive and toxic weeds, is spreading rapidly across Chuadanga, prompting concern among farmers, agricultural scientists and health experts.  They warn that failure to contain it now could have serious long-term consequences. Field visits and local inquiries found the weed spreading across all four upazilas of the district—Chuadanga Sadar, Alamdanga, Damurhuda and Jibannagar.  It is increasingly visible along roadsides, railway tracks, fallow land, border areas and even around cropland.  Yet most residents remain unaware of the plant’s identity or the dangers it poses. Originally native to North and South America, parthenium is believed to have entered Bangladesh through neighbouring India before gradually expanding across different regions.  Despite its relatively short life cycle of just three to four months, a single plant can produce thousands of seeds several times during its lifespan.  The seeds are easily dispersed by wind, rainwater, vehicles and animals, allowing the weed to colonise new areas rapidly. Farmers said the plant has become noticeably more common over the past few years.  

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen a series of weapons tests aboard the country's newly built 5,000-ton destroyer Kang Kon, state media reported on Sunday, as Pyongyang continues its drive to strengthen its naval capabilities with nuclear-armed warships. According to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Friday's tests included the launch of a nuclear-capable strategic cruise missile, live-fire exercises with the destroyer's main gun and automatic cannons, and evaluations of its electronic warfare systems, target-detection equipment and information-processing capabilities. After observing the drills from shore, Kim instructed officials to complete the vessel's remaining sea trials and commission it into active service within two months, KCNA said. The Kang Kon was repaired after being damaged during a failed launch ceremony in May last year. It was officially relaunched in June, although outside analysts have questioned whether the ship is fully ready for operational deployment. The latest tests come shortly after North Korea commissioned its first 5,000-ton destroyer, the Choe Hyon, in late June. During the commissioning ceremony, Kim declared that efforts to build a nuclear-armed navy were progressing according to plan. In recent years, North Korea has increasingly shifted its military focus from ballistic missile development to expanding its naval capabilities, including plans to build a nuclear-powered submarine and strengthen its maritime strike capacity. Kim has also outlined plans to construct two new 5,000-ton destroyers each year over the next five years, alongside the development of a larger 10,000-ton warship. Dhaka’s air quality was in the ‘moderate’ category on Sunday morning, ranking 25th among cities with the worst air quality. At 9:10am, the city recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 71, according to air monitoring data. Meanwhile, Delhi, the capital of India, topped the list with an AQI score of 227, making it the world’s most polluted city at the time. Uganda’s Kampala ranked second with an AQI score of 172, followed by Pakistan’s Lahore with 167. An AQI score between 51 and 100 is considered moderate, indicating acceptable air quality. However, people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution may experience minor health effects. An AQI score between 51 and 100 is considered "moderate," indicating acceptable air quality, although some pollutants may pose a moderate health concern for a small number of unusually sensitive individuals. An AQI reading between 101 and 150 is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, while 151–200 is categorised as ‘unhealthy’. Dhaka frequently experiences deteriorating air quality, particularly during the dry winter months, while conditions generally improve during the monsoon season. Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have temporarily suspended 12 students of the History Department over allegations of ragging several first-year students of the same department. The suspended students belong to the 2024-25 academic session (54th batch), while the victims are from the 2025-26 academic session (55th batch). The university annou5nced the suspension in an office order signed by Acting Registrar Dr ABM Azizur Rahman at around 11:30pm on Saturday. According to the order, a group of 54th-batch students allegedly took several 55th-batch students to the Jahangirnagar University School and College field between 11pm on July 3 and 2am the following day, where they subjected them to ragging. The allegations state that the accused verbally abused the victims in obscene language, forced them to hold their ears and harassed them in the name of “teaching manners.” The office order said the alleged actions violated Section 5(6) of the university’s ‘Student Discipline Ordinance-2018’, which prohibits teasing, ragging and abusive behaviour anywhere on campus, including halls and academic departments. Following the allegations, the university suspended the 12 accused students under Section 4(1)(b) of the ordinance. The suspended students are including- Nasim Uddin Majumdar, Md Mahfuzur Rahman Onto, Abdullah Mahdi, Shubhashish Roy Pranto, Md Abu Abtahi Anik, Md Raihan Khan, Md Naimul Hasan, Md Isfak Hadi, Naim Ahmed Sazib, Kartik Chandra Roy, Kazi Shah Jamshed Alam Nabil and Saifullah Mansur Anan.

A fast-moving wildfire broke out near the outskirts of Greece's second-largest city, Thessaloniki, on Saturday evening, forcing the evacuation of several communities and a care facility for people with special needs, authorities said. The blaze erupted around 8:30 pm in a mountainous ravine north of the city before rapidly spreading across nearby plains, fueled by strong winds, according to the Hellenic Fire Service. Residents of the settlements of Anthoupoli, Filothei and Galini were ordered to evacuate via emergency text alerts as thick smoke blanketed several western suburbs of Thessaloniki. Although homes were largely spared, a number of businesses sustained damage. Authorities also evacuated a facility housing 157 people with special needs. Around 120 residents who were able to walk were moved to a local gymnasium, while the remaining residents were transferred to a psychiatric hospital. Police arrested a 76-year-old man overnight on suspicion of starting the fire. The fire service said the suspect appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. More than 115 firefighters, supported by 38 fire engines and volunteers, were deployed to contain the blaze. Firefighting aircraft joined the operation briefly before being grounded after nightfall. Officials said there was no immediate threat of the fire reaching Thessaloniki, but firefighters remained on high alert as strong winds continued to hamper containment efforts. Additional firefighting personnel were expected to reinforce operations. Several other wildfires were also reported on Saturday, including in the popular tourist destination of the Halkidiki Peninsula and near the northern city of Kilkis. The latest wildfire comes days after a major blaze in central Greece killed a man and his 12-year-old son and forced evacuations. While much of Europe has been affected by extreme heat in recent weeks, Greece has so far avoided the worst of the heatwave.

A van driver was found dead with his throat slit in Digholia upazila of Khulna on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Samir Bhatra, 40. Police recovered his blood-stained body from the Molladanga area under Gazirhat Union at around 9:30 pm. Md Shah Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Digholia Police Station, confirmed the incident and said his van was also recovered a short distance from the spot. Police suspect the victim was killed by unidentified miscreants. The motive behind the killing could not be known immediately. An investigation is underway.

Police arrested an alleged robber and listed criminal during a special drive in the Pallabi area of the capital on Saturday and recovered a locally made sharp weapon from his possession. The arrestee was identified as Md Munna, alias Red Munna, 36. He was arrested at around 2:30 pm from the Bawniabad Muchipara area under Pallabi. According to Pallabi Police Station, a police team conducted the raid based on a tip-off in Section-11 of the Bawniabad Muchipara area and arrested Munna. A sharp knife was seized from his possession during the operation. Police said Munna has 10 cases pending before the court, including those involving narcotics, extortion, theft, assault, attempted murder, and violence against women and children. Police said legal action has been initiated against the accused in connection with the arrest. They added that such special drives will continue to maintain law and order in the area.

Police arrested a man on Saturday for allegedly raping a 14-year-old child in the capital's Pallabi area . The arrestee was identified as Md. Anwar Hossain Sayeed, 50. According to Pallabi police sources, the incident occurred at around 2:40 AM on early Saturday in the Thirteen Hearts Camp area under Pallabi. Anwar Hossain Sayeed intercepted the victim while she was returning from the toilet, gagged her, and forcibly dragged her to the second floor of his rented house. He then beat the victim, suffocated her with a pillow until she lost consciousness, and raped her. Later, he left the victim naked inside a water reservoir near a tubewell and fled the scene. Subsequently, a local resident went to the water reservoir to perform ablution (Wudu) and discovered the unconscious victim. Hearing their screams, nearby residents and the victim’s family members rushed to the spot, rescued her, and rushed her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Locals caught Anwar Hossain Sayeed red-handed after learning about the incident. Upon receiving the information, a team from Pallabi Police Station reached the spot and took the accused into custody, Police added. It is reported that the arrestee had been harassing and making indecent proposals to the victim in various ways at different times. A case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act has been filed against him with Pallabi Police Station. The information was confirmed in a press release issued by Niaz Mehedi, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Media and Public Relations Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended the funeral ceremony of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran on Saturday. Sharif, whose country has played a key mediating role between the United States and Iran, said in a post on social media that Khamenei's "wisdom, leadership and profound influence on Iran and the wider region will be remembered for generations." Iran's ambassador to China has said Beijing and other countries friendly to Tehran will receive special treatment under a new arrangement in the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking at the World Peace Forum in Beijing on Saturday, Ambassador Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said the new mechanism would be implemented in coordination with Oman to facilitate the passage of China and other friendly countries through the strategic waterway. Opposition Leader in Parliament and Jamaat Ameer Dr Md Shafiqur Rahman on Saturday expressed hope that Bangladesh-US relations would continue to deepen based on shared democratic values and mutual respect. He made the remarks while speaking at the "Freedom 250" event marking the 250th anniversary of American independence at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Dr Shafiqur also extended his heartfelt congratulations to the government and people of the United States on the 250th anniversary of the country's independence. He called for transforming the current Bangladesh-US relationship from one of friendship into a genuine partnership based on trade, security cooperation and mutual support for democratic institutions. Speakers at a workshop on Saturday said that women remain underrepresented in politics despite making up 51% of the population. The workshop titled “Political Elites, Clientelism, Democratization, and Governance: Pathways to Inclusive Politics and Women’s Participation,” was held at a hotel in Dhaka. It was implemented by the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS) with support from Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Bangladesh. Young women political activists from the student wings of various political parties, and independent political platforms participated in the day-long program. The workshop aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of the relationship between political elites, clientelism, democratization, governance and inclusive politics, while encouraging critical discussions on the challenges and opportunities surrounding women’s meaningful participation in Bangladesh’s political process. Zillur Rahman, President of CGS, delivered the opening remarks, while Parvez Karim Abbasi, Executive Director of CGS, introduced the workshop's theme. Shadhan Kumar Das, Program Adviser of FES Bangladesh, also addressed the participants. The sessions were facilitated by Shammi Laila Islam, Country Representative, Advancing Women’s Right of access to information, rule of law, The Carter Center.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs and Faridpur-2 MP Shama Obaed on Saturday called for a broad-based social movement to build a society free from drugs, corruption, terrorism and extortion. Speaking at a civic discussion organised by the Citizens' Committee in Faridpur town on Saturday, she said such a movement must begin from every household, village, ward and union. Hospitals can deliver better services even with limited budgets if corruption is curbed: Shama Obaed "Our 17 years of struggle must not be wasted because of our own mistakes. We must stay away from corruption and extortion at any cost and work together to build a drug-free, corruption-free, terrorism-free and extortion-free society," she said. Shama also said declaring Faridpur a division and upgrading its municipality to a city corporation were long-standing demands of the district's people. She urged local business leaders to form a business platform for the proposed Faridpur division to help raise the concerns of entrepreneurs before the prime minister. Highlighting the need for unity, she said people of all religions and political beliefs should work together for the district's development. Leaders from different political parties, business organisations and civil society also addressed the programme.

The weather pattern in the Rangpur region is gradually changing due to the impact of climate change. Although the monsoon season is ongoing, intense heat similar to the month of Bhadro (spans from mid-August to mid-September) has made public life uncomfortable. A brief spell of rain a few days ago offered temporary relief, but the region is once again experiencing a mild heat wave. Bridge without roads fails to benefit Rangpur farmers Along with the rising temperature, frequent load shedding has worsened the situation, causing increased suffering for residents. Patients, students and working people have been the most affected. According to the Rangpur Meteorological Office, the highest temperature recorded in Rangpur at 3:00 pm on Saturday was 35.8 degrees Celsius. According to the Northern Electricity Supply Company (NESCO), the current demand for electricity in the region stands at 850 to 900 megawatts, while supply is around 700 megawatts. As a result, load shedding is being carried out in different areas to manage the shortfall. Frequent power cuts have further intensified the heat, particularly affecting patients in hospitals. HSC examinees are also facing difficulties in their studies due to irregular electricity supply. In Rangpur city, movement on roads was noticeably low around midday, with many residents staying indoors to avoid the extreme heat. Locals said the unusual weather pattern has also led to a rise in seasonal illnesses, including fever, colds and coughs. Meteorologist Mostafizur Rahman of the Rangpur Meteorological Office said there is a possibility of rain in the next two days. State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Mir Shahe Alam, MP, has called for effective initiatives to modernise products manufactured by cooperatives and expand their exports to both domestic and international markets. He made the call while addressing a discussion meeting marking the 104th International Day of Cooperatives, at the Multipurpose Hall of the Department of Cooperatives in Agargaon on Saturday. This year’s theme was “Cooperatives for a Peaceful World.” He said Bangladesh’s cooperative movement requires improving the quality, efficiency and institutional capacity of existing cooperative societies rather than merely increasing their number. The programme began with the hoisting of the national flag. The State Minister formally inaugurated the event by releasing balloons and doves, symbols of peace. He also visited exhibition stalls showcasing products made by cooperatives. During the event, the State Minister held an interactive session with officials of the Department of Cooperatives from divisional, district and upazila levels and was briefed on various field-level challenges. He emphasised greater caution in assigning responsibilities and stressed the importance of placing the right people in the right positions. He also instructed the authorities to take necessary measures to strengthen district offices removing all bureaucratic blockades. Mir Shahe Alam said the government of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attaches special importance to the cooperative sector. He noted that the International Day of Cooperatives is not merely an occasion for celebration but also an opportunity to reaffirm the ideals, values and contributions of the cooperative movement. Speaking as a special guest, Abdus Salam, President of the Bangladesh National Cooperative Union and Administrator of the Dhaka South City Corporation, said the Department of Cooperatives has made significant contributions over the years to economic inclusion in rural areas, women’s empowerment and employment generation. He said cooperatives have the potential to make an even greater contribution to improving people’s livelihoods and called for the expansion of training programmes, low-interest loans, incentive packages and necessary legal reforms to make the sector more people-friendly. With registrar and director general of the Department of Cooperatives Md Selim Fakir in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by Rural Development and Cooperatives Division secretary Shaukat Rashid Chowdhur, and Additional Registrar of the Department of Cooperatives Md Nabirul Islam.

The National Citizen Party (NCP) on Saturday announced that it will hold marches in 100 municipalities (pourashava) and upazilas across the country from July 6, demanding implementation of the referendum verdict, employment generation and stronger border security. As part of the programme, the party will organise the "July March 2026" in 100 upazilas and municipalities across all 64 districts. NCP describes proposed budget as 'ambitious, fiscally unrealistic' The announcement was made at a press conference held at the party's central office in Banglamotor by NCP's Chief Organiser (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam. Party leaders said the marches would begin simultaneously in the northern and southern regions on July 6. The northern campaign will be led by Sarjis Alam and NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, while the southern campaign will be led by Chief Organiser Hasnat Abdullah and party spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan. Sarjis alleged that those who supported the perpetrators of the July killings have become increasingly emboldened because they have not yet been brought to justice. He said the marches would also introduce the party's potential local election candidates and urged people from all walks of life to participate in the programme. According to the announced schedule, a march will be held in Kaliganj Upazila at 4 pm on July 6, followed by another in Savar Upazila later that evening. On July 7, the party will organise a march in Cox's Bazar. Sarjis also announced that a farmers' rally will be held in Kurigram on July 15, where the party's new platform, Jatiya Krishak Shakti (National Farmers' Power), will be formally launched. On July 16, NCP leaders and activists will visit the grave of July movement martyr Abu Sayeed in Rangpur. Addressing the press conference, Sarjis said the NCP wants to see the Home Minister's remarks regarding the banned Awami League reflected in concrete action. He alleged that because justice has yet to be ensured against those who assisted the perpetrators of the July killings, some of them have returned to the public sphere and are making provocative remarks about the July movement. Senior NCP leaders, including Ali Ahsan Junayed and Mahin Sarkar, were also present at the press conference.

State Minister for Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Mir Shahe Alam on Saturday visited the Rajabari-Damdama road in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur following directives from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman after a section of the newly constructed road collapsed within months of its completion. The damage of nearly one-kilometre stretch of the road, built at a cost of around Tk nine crore, sparked widespread criticism over the quality of the construction works. Following the prime minister's instructions, State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam visited the site and inspected the damaged sections of the road. During the inspection, he was briefed by the officials concerned on the overall progress of the construction work, its technical standards and the possible causes behind the collapse. The state minister instructed the authorities concerned to conduct a prompt and impartial investigation to determine the exact cause of the collapse, identify those responsible and take necessary action against anyone found accountable. He also directed officials to take effective measures to minimise public suffering caused by the damaged road. Police have launched a manhunt for a suspect after a woman sleeping on a footpath was allegedly raped in Cumilla's Sadar Dakshin upazila. The hunt follows the circulation of CCTV footage of the incident on social media. The alleged assault took place in the early hours of June 30 in front of a confectionery shop at Bijoypur Bazar along the Cumilla-Noakhali regional highway, police said. According to the CCTV footage, which has since gone viral, a man wearing a white shirt and lungi approached the middle-aged woman, who was sleeping on the footpath, at around 4:08 am and allegedly raped her before fleeing the scene. A market security guard was seen arriving at the location shortly afterward. Police identified the suspect as Khokon, 50, son of Dula Mia of Durgapur village adjacent to Bijoypur Bazar in Sadar Dakshin upazila. Locals alleged that Khokon is a known gambler and is involved in operating gambling activities in the area. Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station Rakibul Islam said police became aware of the incident after the CCTV footage circulated on social media. "After analysing the footage, we identified the suspect and launched a drive to arrest him," the OC said. Assistant Superintendent of Police (Sadar Dakshin Circle) Mostain Billah Ferdous said multiple police teams are conducting raids to apprehend the accused. He said the identity of the victim has not yet been confirmed. "Efforts are underway to identify the woman and take the necessary legal steps," the ASP added.

Police on Saturday said vagrants, beggars and drug addicts would not be allowed to stay in the airport area under any circumstances. According to a statement signed by Niaz Mehdi, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Media and Public Relations), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), regular police patrols are being conducted in and around Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to remove such people from the area in a bid to reduce the harassment of expatriate passengers. 19kg gold seized at Dhaka airport As part of the drive, police launched an operation at around 5:00 am, covering Airport Circle, the BRTA station, Airport Railway Station, areas around the police box, the airport entrance, the VVIP and VIP roads, and other nearby locations. During the operation, police detained 82 people, including vagrants, beggars and drug addicts. Of them, 58 were drug-addicted street children, while the remaining 24 were detained on allegations of involvement in various offences. Police said necessary measures have been taken for the detained children through a designated Child Affairs Police Officer in accordance with the Children Act, 2013.

An old man was allegedly beaten to death in Rangpur's Pirgachha upazila following a dispute over his wife's alleged extramarital relationship, police said. The deceased was identified as Chan Mia, 42, a resident of Chhoto Digtari village under Kandi union in the upazila. Police arrested the prime accused, Mahfuz Ahmed Mithun, 35, and sent him to jail through a court on Saturday, said Sub-Inspector (SI) Shamim Mondal of Pirgachha Police Station. According to police and local sources, Chan Mia married Mukti Begum, also known as Mukta, around 20 years ago. The couple have a son and a daughter. Chan Mia had long been working at a garment factory in Dhaka. Locals alleged that during his absence, Mukti developed an extramarital relationship with their neighbour, Mahfuz Ahmed Mithun. After the relationship became known, Mukti and Mithun reportedly moved to a neighbouring upazila and began living there. The issue had led to tensions between the two sides for some time. According to the complaint, Chan Mia encountered Mithun at around 9 pm on Friday, triggering an argument. Mithun allegedly assaulted Chan Mia during the altercation. When locals rushed to the scene after hearing Chan Mia's cries for help, Mithun took shelter at a nearby house. He later returned and allegedly attacked Chan Mia again, beating him severely. Chan Mia died at the scene, according to the complaint. Alam Mia, the victim's nephew, filed a murder case with Pirgachha Police Station, accusing Mukti Begum, Mahfuz Ahmed Mithun and several unidentified individuals. SI Shamim Mondal said Mithun had been produced before a court and sent to jail, while efforts were underway to arrest the remaining accused. The body was sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy, he added.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad paid tribute on behalf of Bangladesh at the state funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran on Saturday. At the solemn ceremony held at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla, the Speaker offered prayers for the departed leader and conveyed condolences and solidarity from the government and people of Bangladesh to the Iranian nation. During the visit, according to a press release, he met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior leaders, expressing sympathy over Khamenei’s death. He also signed the condolence book opened in honour of the late Iranian leader. Earlier, the Speaker held a bilateral meeting with Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly. Hafiz Uddin arrived in Tehran on Friday to attend the state funeral and was received at the airport by Iranian Deputy Speaker Hamid Reza Haji Babaei. During the meeting, the Speaker condemned what he described as the “brutal killing” of Iran’s Supreme Leader and reaffirmed the centuries-old friendship, as well as the deep cultural and diplomatic ties, between Bangladesh and Iran. He also praised Ghalibaf’s constructive role in implementing the recently signed peace memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States, expressing hope that the agreement would contribute to lasting peace, stability and prosperity in Iran and the wider region. The Speaker said Bangladesh would continue to support the peace process and expressed optimism that dialogue and diplomacy would lead to lasting solutions to regional challenges. He invited Ghalibaf to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time to further strengthen bilateral parliamentary relations. Later, the Speaker met Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali, who sought Bangladesh’s assistance in developing cricket in Iran and expressed interest in signing a memorandum of understanding to expand sports cooperation between the two countries. Hafiz Uddin said he would convey the proposal to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Youth and Sports. The Speaker also gave an interview to the Bangla Service of Iran Radio, where he discussed Bangladesh-Iran bilateral relations and regional issues. He said he would urge the relevant authorities in Bangladesh to enhance consular services for Bangladeshi expatriates living in Iran.  

Police recovered the half-decomposed body of an auto-rickshaw driver from an abandoned pond in Narayanganj’s Bandar upazila on Saturday, six days after he went missing. The deceased was identified as Masum Rana, 35, son of Bacchu Mia of the Sonachara area in the upazila. Electrician electrocuted in Mohakhali slum Police said locals spotted the body floating in an abandoned pond near Dhakeshwari Road along the Madanganj–Madanpur highway on Saturday morning and informed them. Police later recovered the body. His wife, Suma Akter, said Masum had been missing since Monday after leaving home. A general diary (GD) was later filed with Bandar Police Station. She alleged that her husband was abducted due to previous enmity and hacked to death, and the body was dumped in the pond in an attempt to conceal the crime. Jamal Uddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bandar Police Station, said injury marks were found on the victim’s neck, hands and legs, adding that police primarily suspect he was killed over old enmity. The body was sent to the morgue of Narayanganj General (Victoria) Hospital for an autopsy. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved in the killing, the OC added.

An electrician died after being electrocuted while carrying out electrical work at his rented home in Sattola Slum in Banani in the capital on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Md Iqbal Hossain, 35, son of the late Zakir Hossain. He hailed from the Maijdee area of Noakhali district. He had been living with his family in the slum. Woman found dead in Savar; police suspect murder after rape Iqbal’s brother-in-law, Jibon, said Iqbal was electrocuted and lost consciousness while doing electrical work in his room in the slum around 1:30 pm. “We first took him to a nearby hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to DMCH, where doctors declared him dead around 5 pm,” he said. Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the police camp at DMCH, said the body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy, and the matter has been reported to the concerned police station.

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said the party never bowed to fascist regime despite enduring 17 years of political struggle, repression and imprisonment. "We fought against fascism for 17 years. We endured repression, sacrificed lives and spent time in jail, but we never bowed our heads. Under the leadership of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman, we secured victory. Now we have an opportunity to build a new Bangladesh," he said. Fakhrul made the remarks while addressing a public awareness programme titled Alokito Lalmonirhat (Enlightened Lalmonirhat) as the chief guest at MT Hossain Ground in Lalmonirhat town. He said the movement to rebuild Bangladesh has now taken shape through the Alokito Lalmonirhat initiative led by Asadul Habib Dulu. Expressing concern over the growing drug menace, Fakhrul said drug abuse is destroying the future of the country's youth and weakening society. "We cannot allow this to continue. We must build a social movement by raising public awareness and engaging people in resisting drugs and other social crimes," he said. He expressed hope that the anti-drug campaign launched by Dulu would spread across the country. Calling on people to reject drugs, dowry and gambling, Fakhrul said such social evils must be eliminated to build a prosperous nation. Referring to the Teesta issue, he said the government is committed to implementing the Teesta Master Plan, which he said would open a new horizon for the socio-economic development of people living along the Teesta River. Four security personnel were killed and 16 others injured in a suicide vehicle-borne bomb attack targeting a Pakistan Coast Guards check post in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province, official sources said on Saturday. The attack occurred at around 6:40 pm local time on Friday when a truck loaded with explosives rammed into the Pakistan Coast Guards check post in Jiwani city of Gwadar district. The powerful blast demolished the check post building, killing three Pakistan Coast Guards personnel and one Pakistan Army soldier at the scene. The injured included eight Pakistan Army soldiers and eight Coast Guards personnel. Several of them were reported to be in critical condition. According to the sources, a group of militants positioned near the check post opened fire immediately after the explosion before fleeing the area. Police, security forces and rescue teams rushed to the scene, sealed off the area and took the injured to a nearby hospital for treatment. Security forces launched a search operation while investigators began collecting evidence from the site. The outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the attack, the sources said. No further details were immediately available as the investigation and rescue operation continued.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Saturday that the Awami League has suffered a complete political downfall, claiming the party has been “destroyed and eliminated” and is now “buried in Delhi.” He further asserted that the party will no longer be able to participate in Bangladesh’s political process in the future. The Home Minister made the remarks at a discussion meeting of the July National Conference-2026 on Saturday, marking the second anniversary of the July Revolution. The conference was held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center under the joint initiative of the July '24 Martyrs' Families Society and the Central Executive Committee of Amra July Joddha (We Are July Fighters)'. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was the chief guest at the event. “The UN report says 14,000 cases, but officially, in various newspapers and surveys, only 700 to 800 accounts are available. Where did the rest go? Because the hospitals could not preserve the records of the martyrs, even their documents have disappeared. They were buried as unclaimed bodies. Today, we cannot return them to their relatives after searching for their graves. After such a brutal murder, after the genocide, there is still no apology from the mass murderer Sheikh Hasina. They are labeling the July fighters as criminals; they are labeling this mass uprising in Bangladesh as militant. In Bangladesh, their state power has been seized through militancy. There is nothing more shameful than this,” the Home Minister said. “There is no apology within the Awami League. They do not have the condition to admit guilt; they do not have that history either. On the contrary, they are sitting abroad and now conspiring against the democratic government in Bangladesh in various ways.” “The Awami League has fallen politically; it has been politically destroyed and eliminated. It has been buried in Delhi. That Awami League will never be able to do politics in Bangladesh again.” AL must face trial The Home Minister said that everyone has demanded the trial of the Awami League as a political party. The investigation is ongoing. Very soon, it will be taken to trial as a political party. “The law has been amended according to Article 47 of the Constitution. It is included in the Anti-Terrorism Act and the ICT Act that political parties can be tried. So wait.” Salahuddin has said that those who are taking political advantage of the spirit of the July Revolution and “selling it” will face consequences in the future. He requested, “I ask those organising this event today that none of us should profit from the spirit of this July. Those who organise political groups in various ways to exploit the spirit of the July Revolution for political gain will face consequences in the future. But history is like that.” Referring to the consequences of the fascist Awami League, Salahuddin said, “Those who used to sell the spirit of the 1971 Liberation War are sitting in Delhi today selling their spirit. The people of Bangladesh overthrew them. Therefore, selling the spirit for political advantage is not good.” He said, “We will preserve the history of the great July 24 mass uprising; we will preserve the memory.” The Home Minister said, “I would like to reveal some behind-the-scenes stories today. Both my leader Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and I were exiled. By the grace of Allah, if we had not been exiled, successfully completing an uprising like this July would not have been possible.” Status of the July genocide trial The Home Minister said, “Five genocide and crimes against humanity cases have already been decided. There are 27 cases under trial, and 72 cases are almost at the final stage of investigation.” He added that the latest verdict in the trial of a fascist ally named Hasanul Haq Inu has been delivered. “I have heard that the plaintiff is not satisfied with only a 10-year sentence, so it will be appealed,” he said. We can hope that in those cases, justice will be delivered so that he receives the maximum sentence.” Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni chaired the event. Law Minister Md.
