Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on Friday advised a Member of Parliament to be “more attentive” after the lawmaker mistakenly raised a point regarding a bill that was not currently before the House, causing a brief disruption to the legislative process.
The incident occurred during the morning session of the Jatiya Sangsad when the ‘Deposit Protection Bill, 2026’ was being moved for immediate consideration.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury initially sought leave to introduce the bill. Following the Speaker’s approval, the minister formally introduced the bill and moved it for immediate consideration.
Before the proposal was put to a voice vote, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami MP from Dhaka-12 Md Saiful Alam sought the floor to speak.
When the Speaker asked which specific bill he wished to speak about, the MP replied: "I am speaking in favour of preserving the Bank Resolution Ordinance, 2025."
Speaker Hafiz Uddin immediately intervened, noting that no such bill had been tabled at that moment.
"This has not been introduced; there is no bill by this name [on the floor] right now," he clarified.
Realising the mistake, the MP thanked the Speaker and resumed his seat. However, the Speaker expressed his dissatisfaction with the lapse.
"My God, Honourable Member, please be more attentive. You are creating an obstacle to the law-making programme."
Following the exchange, the Speaker proceeded with the parliamentary process.
The Deposit Protection Bill, 2026 was subsequently accepted for consideration and passed unanimously by voice vote.
Later, toward the end of the session before the recess, the Leader of the Opposition sought clarification, stating that the initial agenda provided to them included the "Bank Resolution Act," which led to confusion regarding its status.
In response, the Speaker assured the House that the mentioned legislation would be brought forward at a later time.
