A Faridpur court on Tuesday sentenced a father and a stepmother to life term imprisonment in a case over the murder of a son with disability by ingesting poison in Alfadanga upazila of the district around 11 years back.
The court of Faridpur Additional Session Judge First Court Judge Ashok Kumar Dutta also fined the couple Tk 20, 000 each, in default of which they will have to suffer three months’ more jail, said the court’s Public Prosecutor Naowab Ali Mridah said.
The convicts are identified as father Helal Sheikh and step-mother Jesmin Begum, residents of the upazila. They remain absconding.
According to the case statement Helal Sheikh and Josna Begum were the biological parents of a handicapped son. But the accused father got married with Jesmin in 2013 and started torturing Josna.
At one stage, Josna lodged complaints with the upazila nirbahi officer and union parishad chairman seeking remedy.
During arbitration, the disabled son testified for his mother Josna, causing anger in his father Helal.
Later, the father in collaboration with the step-mother fed him poison which led him to death on July 26, 2013.
Mother Josna Begum filed a case against four people including the duo the next day.
On June 30 in 2014, police pressed chargesheet against the duo with the court.
After completing legal procedures, the court handed down the judgment in the absence of the accused on Tuesday.
