A leader of the Krishak Dal was killed on Friday in a clash between the BNP and Jamaat in Madhabpur village of Jhenaidah Sadar upazila.
The deceased has been identified as Taru Munsi, 56, organizational secretary of the Union Krishak Dal and son of Munsur Ali Munsi of the same village.
He died around 8:00 pm at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after being flown to the capital in critical condition. His death was confirmed by Shahjahan Ali, joint convener of Ganna Union Swechasebak Dal.
Earlier on Friday afternoon, a dispute over a training meeting of Jamaat’s women activists triggered a violent clash between BNP and Jamaat members, leaving 12 people injured. Due to his critical condition, Taru Munsi was immediately sent to Dhaka for treatment.
Among the injured were student wing leaders Shipon Munsi (Taru’s son), Hossain Ali, Shahidul Islam, Nayeb Ali, Abdul Khalek, and Akbar Ali, all admitted to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital.
Shipon Munsi said that the conflict began when Jamaat women activists gathered at the house of Ohidul in Madhabpur village for a training session. When Ward BNP president Ilyas Hossain questioned their gathering, a dispute escalated into a clash. Jamaat women attacked with sticks, and male Jamaat supporters also joined the violence.
He added that Jamaat activists, including Ohidul, Tabibur, Abdul Hamid Nilu, Monirul, Nasir, and Plabon, took part in the attack using sticks. After the clash, Jamaat supporters vandalized the Ganna Union BNP office and the homes of BNP leaders Shahjahan, Ilyas Hossain, Abul Kalam, and Taru Munsi, causing extensive damage.
Dr. Habibur Rahman, upazila Amir of Jamaat in Jhenaidah Sadar, claimed that his women activists were organizing an Iftar event and were attacked by BNP members. He said 5–6 Jamaat workers were injured during the clash.
Jhinaidah Superintendent of Police Mahfuz Afzal said police have launched arrest operations. Senior officers have deployed additional forces in the area, and instructions have been issued to ensure that the actual perpetrators are apprehended.
