Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China, met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Friday morning.
The meeting took place after the Prime Minister paid tribute to the Chinese revolutionary heroes at the Monument to the People's Heroes in Tiananmen Square.
Prime Minister's Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon said the Prime Minister reached the Great Hall of the People around 9:30am local time after completing the wreath-laying ceremony.
Earlier in the morning, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman laid a special red-and-green wreath at the Monument to the People's Heroes in Tiananmen Square in honour of the Chinese revolutionary heroes.
The national anthems of Bangladesh and China were played while the bugle sounded the Last Post. After laying the wreath, the Prime Minister stood in solemn silence for a while as a mark of respect.
On his arrival at Tiananmen Square at around 9:15am local time, a smartly turned-out contingent of the Chinese People's Liberation Army accorded him a state salute. His wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, and members of the Bangladesh delegation were present.
The Prime Minister is in Beijing on a four-day official visit to China at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held bilateral talks with Premier Li Qiang at the Great Hall of the People. The two sides discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, infrastructure and other sectors, and witnessed the signing of 13 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs).
The two prime ministers also attended a state banquet hosted by Premier Li Qiang.
Earlier on Thursday, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Communist Party of China (CPC) signed their first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Beijing.
During his stay in Beijing, the Prime Minister also met Chinese Water Resources Minister Li Guoying and Liu Haixing, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee.
He addressed the "Invest Bangladesh" conference, jointly organised by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), where he invited Chinese companies to expand investment in Bangladesh.
The Prime Minister also met senior executives of several leading Chinese companies and representatives of major government agencies and business organisations to discuss investment, trade and development cooperation.
Before arriving in Beijing, Tarique Rahman attended the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions, also known as Summer Davos, in Dalian, where he addressed a session on climate leadership and held a number of bilateral meetings with world leaders.
His China visit followed a two-day official visit to Malaysia, the first leg of his maiden overseas tour since assuming office.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to leave Beijing for Dhaka at 5pm today (Friday), concluding his official overseas visit as Prime Minister.
