A Rangamati court on Tuesday sentenced a man to death for killing a woman and setting her body on fire in 2022.
Rangamati District and Session Judge Mohammad Ahsan Tarek handed down the judgment.
The convict is Mohammad Mahibur Kamal Mahibullah, son of Monir Uddin of Netrakona district. The court also fined him Tk 50,000.
According to the prosecution, Mahibur went to Kaptai for work and had a love affair with Hasina Begum Sumi, 28.
On March 11, 2022, Mahibur and Sumi had an altercation over their relationship and financial transaction at BFIDC Model Government Primary School in Kaptai.
During the altercation, Mahibur hit Sumi on the head with a brick, leaving her dead on the spot.
Later, he took Sumi’s body to an abandoned toilet of the school and set it on fire.
Amena Begum, Sumi’s mother, filed a case.
Following the call records of Sumi’s mobile phone, law enforcers arrested Mahibur.
Later, he gave a confessional statement under Section 164.
