An eight-year-old girl went missing after a section of the Padma River bank collapsed in Kushtia's Daulatpur upazila on Wednesday, while another child was rescued alive by local residents.
The incident occurred around noon in Bhurkapara village under Moricha Union.
According to witnesses, Jamila Khatun, 7, daughter of Ijazul Mondal, and Nuria Khatun, 8, daughter of Ashik Sheikh, were standing on the riverbank when a section of land suddenly gave way, plunging them into the river.
Hearing their cries, local residents rushed to the scene. A young man, Lalon Sheikh, managed to rescue Jamila alive, but Nuria was swept away by the strong current and remains missing.
Fire Service personnel and police reached the spot around 3:30 pm and launched a search operation.
Shafiqul Islam, manager of Bheramara Fire Service Station, said rescue efforts were being hampered by the strong current and the river's depth. A diving team from Khulna has been called in to assist with the operation.
Daulatpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khaledur Rahman said police were assisting the Fire Service in the search for the missing child.
