Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-12 arrested a fugitive accused in a murder case during a raid in the Soydabad area of Sirajganj Sadar upazila on Tuesday evening.
The arrestee was identified as Md Shafiqul Islam Shafi, 40, son of late Shukur Sheikh of Paikpara village in the upazila.
RAB-12 Company Commander Major Tabrez Tajwar Sharif confirmed the arrest in a press release.
According to the release, Shafiqul had allegedly been threatening to kill Nazrul Islam, 55, son of Md Abdul Gafur of Banbaria Purba Para (Adarshagram) village, after being released on bail from jail in an earlier case related to providing information to police.
On Aug 27 around 9:30pm, Shafiqul allegedly attacked Nazrul with a sharp weapon in front of a grocery shop owned by a man named Mujahar in Banbaria Purba Para after finding him alone.
The blow, reportedly aimed at Nazrul's head, struck his right shoulder, leaving him seriously injured and causing him to fall to the ground.
At that point, Shafiqul, along with another accused, Md Joynal, and several unidentified accomplices, allegedly kicked and punched Nazrul indiscriminately in the chest, abdomen and back, leaving him critically injured.
Hearing his cries, local people rushed to the scene, prompting the attackers to flee.
Nazrul was taken to Sirajganj Shaheed M Mansur Ali Medical College Hospital for treatment. He died at his home on Aug 29 around 8am, two days after the attack.
Following his death, his son filed a murder case with Sadar Police Station on Aug 30.
Based on confidential information and with the help of modern information technology, a RAB team conducted a raid in the Soydabad area around 6:30pm Tuesday and arrested Shafiqul.
The arrested accused was later handed over to Sadar Police Station for further legal action, the press release said.
