The father and elder brother of Siddhartha Das, one of the two suspects arrested in connection with the killings of four members of a family, including former schoolteacher Ganapati Chakraborty, have been released after being questioned by the Detective Branch (DB) of police.

They were released from the DB office on Central Road around 11:30pm on Saturday after signing written undertakings, police said.

Siddhartha’s father Binoy Das and elder brother Partha Das were taken into DB custody for questioning earlier on Saturday afternoon.

Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Sonaton Chakroborty said they were brought in for questioning and released after giving written undertakings.

Speaking to reporters after his release, Binoy Das said police questioned them about various aspects of the killings. “We told the police only what we had already said to the media,” he said.

The bodies of Ganapati, 65, a former teacher of Rangpur Zilla School, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bala, 50, daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25, and son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam, 12, were recovered from their locked home in Machhuapara of Rangpur city on August 22.

Police said all four were strangled to death.

Police arrested Mugdha Das, 23, and Siddhartha Das, 19, from the same area the following day in connection with the killings.

The two arrested suspects later gave confessional statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before a court, while two witnesses, identified as Shimanto and Bidyut Das, also gave statements before the court.
