Speaker tells upazila admin to play role in preventing violence against women

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Monday urged the upazila administration, particularly Upazila women vice chairmen and Upazila women affairs officers, to be more sincere alongside police to prevent violence against women and children.
She made this call when United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Mia Seppo on Monday met her at the latter’s Jatiya Sangsad office, said a Parliament handout.
“Regular counseling and seminars can play an effective role in this regard,” said Dr Chaudhury.
During the meeting, other issues like women empowerment, gender equity and Bangladesh’s achievements in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) came up for discussion.
The Speaker stressed the need for easing the bank loan conditions for women entrepreneurs. A large number of women entrepreneurs are needed to be created for the sake of empowerment of women, she said.
Dr Chaudhury put importance over performance of fish and agriculture sectors and development of human resources alongside remittance and readymade garment to strengthen the country’s economy offsetting the impacts of the coronavirus outbreak.
Mia Seppo assured that UNDP would continue its assistance to Bangladesh in future as the UNDP has long been cooperating with the development of the country.
Praising the progress of the Bangladesh economy, the UN Resident Coordinator said Bangladesh is now working under the bold leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in achieving SDGs and implementation of Vision 2021.
