Speakers at a youth rally on Friday emphasised the need for pedestrian-and-bicycle-friendly roads and infrastructure to combat daily traffic congestion and reduce the loss of working hours in the capital.
They said walking and cycling can be sustainable solutions to Dhaka’s traffic woes and highlighted the importance of enacting and implementing a road safety law to ensure safe road infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists.
The event was organised jointly by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), Dhaka Ahsania Mission, and Bangladesh Red Crescent Society as part of the observance of Global Road Safety Week 2025.
The youth rally took place on the main road of Manik Mia Avenue, from Asad Gate to Khamarbari intersection, on the south side of the National Parliament House.

Among the attendees were BRTA Director of Road Safety Shitangshu Shekhar Biswas, Deputy Director Md Nazmul Haque, Dhaka Ahsania Mission Health Sector Deputy Director Md Mokhlesur Rahman, Red Crescent Society Youth and Volunteer Division Deputy Director Muntasir Mahmud, Ahsania Mission Road Safety Project Coordinator Sharmin Rahman, and Tobacco Control Project Coordinator Shariful Islam, along with officials from the organising institutions.
Around 200 youths and students from various youth groups and educational institutions joined the rally.

Led by S Z Apu of the Ahsania Mission Youth Forum for Health and Wellbeing and Md Rayhan Rahman, Convener of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society National Headquarters Youth Committee, the participating youths submitted a memorandum to BRTA Director Shitangshu Shekhar Biswas, demanding the formulation of a road safety law.
