On Sunday (March 02, 2025), Barcelona secured a commanding 4-0 victory over Real Sociedad at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. 

Real Betis, Athletic Bilbao, and Real Sociedad—three of La Liga’s strongest teams—faced Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, and Barcelona in the same week. After Real Madrid failed to overcome the challenge, Atlético Madrid took full advantage. Barcelona easily secured their win as Real Sociedad were reduced to 10 men.

A Dominant Display at the Olympic Stadium

The match turned heavily in Barcelona’s favour just 15 minutes in when Sociedad captain Aritz Elustondo received a straight red card, leaving his team with 10 players. Taking advantage, Barcelona quickly gained control, with fullback Gerard Martin and midfielder Marc Casado scoring in the 25th and 29th minutes, respectively. In the second half, Ronald Araújo and Robert Lewandowski added two more goals in the 56th and 60th minutes.

With this victory, Barcelona reclaimed the top spot in the league with 57 points from 26 matches (18 wins, 3 draws). Atlético Madrid dropped to second with 56 points, while Real Madrid slipped to third with 54.

Early Drama and Sociedad’s Collapse

Sociedad initially thought they had taken the lead in the second minute through Sergio Gómez, but the goal was ruled offside. Just 13 minutes later, Pedro González López, known as Pedri’s shot, flew just over the crossbar. In the 16th minute, Ori Oskarsson beat Barça’s defence but was once again caught offside.

A minute later, Sociedad’s troubles worsened when Dani Olmo was brought down from behind by Elustondo, earning the Sociedad defender a direct red card. A VAR review upheld the decision, leaving the team in severe distress.

Barcelona immediately took control, relentlessly attacking their opponents. Their pressure paid off in the 25th minute when 23-year-old fullback Gerard Martin, who was starting in place of Alejandro Balde, scored his first-ever goal for the club. The goal came after a clever passing sequence involving Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo, with Martin striking a powerful shot past the goalkeeper.

Just four minutes later, Barça doubled their goal score. Olmo fired a shot from the edge of the box that deflected off Marc Casado and into the net. Though Olmo’s shot was responsible for the goal, Casado was credited with the final touch. This marked Olmo’s 10th goal contribution of the season (5 goals, 5 assists) since joining Barcelona from RB Leipzig.

Barcelona have now had 19 different goal-scorers this season, the second-highest tally among Europe’s top five leagues. Only Real Betis, who thrashed Real Madrid the previous night, have more with 20. Arsenal also have 19 different scorers in the Premier League.

Trailing by two goals and down to 10 men, Sociedad struggled. The hosts continued their relentless pressure and created several more chances before halftime, though the score remained 2-0 at the break.

Total Control in the Second Half

Sociedad’s coach, Imanol, made a change at halftime, but Barcelona remained dominant. In the 49th minute, Raphinha’s free-kick narrowly missed the target. Pedri struck the post in the 55th minute, but just a minute later, Barça found their third goal through Ronald Araújo.

Raphinha delivered a brilliant cross, which Robert Lewandowski met with a powerful header. Sociedad’s goalkeeper made a stunning save, but the ball rebounded straight to Araújo, who fired it into the net from close range.

Five minutes later, Lewandowski added the fourth goal in a spectacular way. Receiving a pass from the teammate, Barça’s Uruguayan defender Araújo made a rocket shot from outside the box. Lewandowski, positioned inside the box, instinctively flicked the ball, redirecting it past the helpless goalkeeper.

Lewandowski’s Scoring Streak Continues

With this goal, Lewandowski increased his La Liga tally to 21 goals for the season, extending his lead over Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé (17 goals). Across all competitions, the Polish striker has now scored 34 goals in 37 matches—more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues.

Barcelona continued to attack, but no further goals were scored, and the match ended in a dominant 4-0 win.

After a disappointing 4-4 draw against Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey, this victory was a morale booster for Hansi Flick’s team. 

Up next, Barça will face Benfica in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 on March 6 before returning to La Liga action against Osasuna on March 9.

Meanwhile, Sociedad remained in ninth place with 34 points from 26 matches. They will play Manchester United in the Europa League on March 6.
