Amazon said Sunday it has suspended its partnership with 21 Air after a cargo plane operated by the carrier and carrying Amazon packages crashed beyond a Miami runway last week, killing five people.

The Boeing 767 landed at high speed on Sept. 6 and continued about 1,300 feet (396 metres) beyond the runway before striking a van carrying workers from an aircraft-cleaning company. All five people killed were inside the van, while five others were injured.

“After the tragic incident last weekend, we’ve spent time supporting the investigation and reviewing some of the surrounding circumstances, and we’ve decided to pause our operations with 21 Air, the operator of Flight 7598,” Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said in a statement.

“We’ll continue working to support the investigation and everyone affected,” she added.

North Carolina-based 21 Air has transported packages for Amazon since 2024. The company did not immediately respond Sunday to a request for comment on Amazon’s decision.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to examine the aircraft’s ownership history, weather conditions at the airport, maintenance records and 21 Air’s operations.

NTSB flight data released Sept. 9 showed that one pilot warned the other that they were approaching too fast for landing and remained concerned about speed after touchdown.

Cockpit audio also captured several automated warnings about the aircraft’s descent rate and nearby terrain. The full transcript of the cockpit conversation will be released later in the investigation.

The 32-year-old Boeing 767 was originally built as a passenger aircraft and operated for several foreign airlines for more than two decades before being converted into a cargo plane in 2015, according to flight-tracking website Flightradar24.
