Bangladesh and Spain have discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, cultural exchanges, sports diplomacy, tourism and skilled migration.
Bangladesh reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
The issues were discussed at a meeting between State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam and Diego Martínez Belío, Spain’s State Secretary for Foreign and Global Affairs, in Madrid on Wednesday, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.
Shama Obaed expressed heartfelt condolences over the deadly train accident in Toledo, Spain, and conveyed her sympathies to the bereaved families and those affected by the tragedy, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, both sides explored ways to expand existing trade and investment opportunities, including through business-to-business exchanges, export diversification and the organisation of expos.
The state minister underscored the potential for greater cooperation in cultural exchanges and called for an early conclusion of the proposed memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cultural cooperation.
They also exchanged views on strengthening cooperation in sports diplomacy, the creative economy, arts and tourism.
Highlighting the government’s emphasis on promoting sports nationwide, Shama Obaed said sports could serve as an effective tool for strengthening people-to-people contacts.
Recognising the valuable contributions of the Bangladeshi community in Spain and its role in building bridges between the two countries, she stressed the importance of creating legal pathways for skilled migration.
She also encouraged Spain to participate in the European Union’s Talent Partnerships initiative for Bangladeshi workers.
The Spanish side reaffirmed its support for advancing engagement with Bangladesh in areas of mutual interest.
