India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to field first against New Zealand in the rain-affected second one-day international on Saturday, with the match shortened to 47 overs per side.
The toss was delayed by an hour due to a wet outfield following morning rain. Both captains preferred to bowl first under humid conditions, with the pitch having remained covered for the previous two days.
India and New Zealand made no changes to their playing XIs from the opening match in Auckland, where the visitors secured a five-wicket victory with 56 balls to spare.
Virat Kohli was the standout performer in that rain-interrupted match, scoring 74 runs. He celebrated his 38th birthday in Wellington on Thursday.
India also won the preceding five-match Twenty20 international series 3-2.
Rain continued in Wellington on Saturday morning, leaving the outfield damp, while further heavy showers and possible thunderstorms were forecast.
