A gunman opened fire in a crowded market square in Krakow on Saturday afternoon, killing five people and injuring at least 12 others, including police officers.
The perpetrator drove into Main Square-a major tourist destination-and fired at random before being shot and wounded in a confrontation with police. Emergency teams, ambulances, and a Polish Medical Air Rescue helicopter rushed to the central square.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk posted on X that police are investigating the attack, while President Karol Nawrocki expressed sympathy for the victims and their families. U.S. Ambassador Tom Rose condemned the "savage and murderous attack" that shattered Poland's peace and reaffirmed American solidarity.
Mass shootings are uncommon in Poland. Krakow, the country's second-largest city, is situated about 250 kilometers from the capital, Warsaw.
