Two people died of dengue and 1,056 new patients were hospitalised across the country in the 24 hours until 8:00am on Saturday. With the latest fatalities, the dengue death toll has risen to 143 in the country this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The new deaths were reported in Dhaka South City Corporation, it said. Since January 1 this year, a total of 50,276 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country. Of them, 46,699 have been discharged after recovery, according to the DGHS.

Seven children died with measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours until 8:00am on Saturday, bringing the country’s combined tally of confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths to 1,019 this year. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has classified all seven latest fatalities as suspected measles deaths. With these, the total number of suspected measles deaths has reached 919, while confirmed deaths from measles have remained the same at 100. A total of 816 new suspected measles cases were reported during the 24-hour period, bringing the cumulative number of suspected cases nationwide to 170,638. Meanwhile, 39 new confirmed measles cases were recorded, bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed infections to 20,006. Since March 15 this year, a total of 150,202 patients with suspected measles have been hospitalised across the country, of whom 144,485 have recovered, according to DGHS data.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has classified all three latest fatalities as suspected measles deaths. With these, the total number of suspected measles deaths has reached 912, while confirmed deaths from measles have remained the same at 100. A total of 1077 new suspected measles cases were reported during the 24-hour period, bringing the cumulative number of suspected cases nationwide to 169,822. Meanwhile, 34 new confirmed measles cases were recorded, bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed infections to 19,967. Since March 15 this year, a total of 149,471 patients with suspected measles have been hospitalised across the country, of whom 143,864 have recovered, according to DGHS data.

International Justice Mission (IJM) Bangladesh, in collaboration with the Department of Social Services (DSS), organised a three-day training on victim support services and management for 25 caregivers of the Child Development Centre (Girls) at Konabari in Gazipur, which concluded on Thursday. The training aimed to enhance caregivers’ understanding of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC), help them identify CSEC victims and enable them to provide better support services. It was organised under a strategic partnership between IJM Bangladesh and the DSS. DSS Director (Institution) Mohd Kamruzzaman attended the closing ceremony as chief guest. Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development and Human Resource Management) of Gazipur Tania Tabassum and IJM Bangladesh Country Director Claire Wilkinson were present as special guests. Social case workers, counsellors, assistant teachers, trade instructors, embroidery instructors, computer instructors, child protection social workers, psychiatric social workers, psychosocial counsellors, medical assistants, probation officers, nurses and junior physical instructors of the Konabari Child Development Centre participated in the training. IJM Bangladesh will implement activities in 11 districts under the Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Mymensingh divisions.

The latest fatalities pushed the nationwide death toll to 130 since January 1, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). During the period, 1,571 new dengue patients were hospitalised across the country, also the highest daily tally recorded this year, taking the cumulative number of cases to 45,475. Another young woman died with measles-like symptoms in Sylhet, raising the number of confirmed and suspected measles deaths in the Sylhet division to 158 this year. The deceased was identified as Sumaiya, aged 18 years and eight months, daughter of Abdul Matin of Juri upazila in Moulvibazar. She died while undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, according to a measles situation report released by the Office of the Divisional Director of Health, Sylhet, on Sunday. Earlier, two more adolescent girls and a nurse died of the disease, according to the health authorities. According to the report, 10 of the 158 deaths were confirmed measles cases, while 148 people died with measles symptoms. Meanwhile, 112 suspected measles patients were admitted to hospitals in the division in the past 24 hours until 8:00am Sunday. Currently, a total of 466 suspected measles patients are undergoing treatment at different government and private hospitals in Sylhet division. According to the report, a total of 1,031 confirmed measles cases have been detected in the division since the beginning of the year. Of them, 363 cases were reported in Sylhet, 357 in Sunamganj, 158 in Moulvibazar and 153 in Habiganj.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) alone recorded 39 deaths during the period, accounting for around 34.5 percent of the total fatalities reported across the country this year. The city corporation also recorded 5,400 dengue cases, accounting for 13.16 percent of the cumulative cases reported nationwide. The figures highlight the concentration of dengue-related deaths in the DSCC area, where the disease continues to pose a significant public health concern.
