Unauthorised edible oil price hike to prompt govt action: Adviser Bashir
Businessmen have raised the price of edible oil in the market without obtaining approval from the Ministry of Commerce, increasing the price of bottled soybean oil by Tk 9 per litre — a move that will face action, Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin said on Wednesday (December 03, 2025).
During visits to several markets in the city, five-litre bottles of soybean oil were found selling at Tk 965, up from Tk 922 just days ago.
Aseem Halder, a grocer at Uttar Badda Kacha Bazar, said, “Companies have increased soybean oil prices by Tk 9 per litre. What was Tk 189 per litre is now Tk 198. Loose soybean oil has also gone up by Tk 5 per litre.”

Asked whether the ministry approved the hike, the adviser said traders raised prices without notifying the government.
“They did not discuss the matter with the ministry,” he told reporters.
“Just a few days ago, through a tender, they offered us soybean oil at Tk 20 less per litre than the existing market rate. We purchased 50 lakh litres of soybean oil. I don’t know on what grounds they have now increased the price,” he said.
The adviser said the ministry will sit with traders soon, and if they fail to justify the hike, the new prices will not be approved.

When asked how traders raised prices without government clearance, he added, “They tried to increase prices in October as well, but we didn’t approve it — and the market didn’t follow the hike either. We will sit with them again.”
Regarding commodity prices ahead of Ramadan, the adviser said the prices will remain stable as necessary measures have already been taken, and mentioned that the prices of chickpeas, sugar and lentils have recently declined.
According to the Bangladesh Vegetable Oil Refiners and Vanaspati Manufacturers Association, companies sent a letter to the ministry on November 10 seeking approval to raise soybean oil prices.
On November 24, they again recommended a price adjustment, but the ministry did not respond.

Administration sets retail price of loose Soybean oil at Tk160 per litre in Ctg
The administration set the price of loose edible oil at different levels in Chattogram from importers to retail sellers in a decision at a special task force meeting on Tuesday.
As per the decision, importers will sell loose soybean oil at Tk 153 per litre, traders at Tk 155, and retailers at a maximum of Tk 160 per litre. This pricing will be effective from Tuesday until April 10.
The meeting held at the Chattogram Circuit house, aimed to stabilise the prices of essential commodities during Ramadan.
The special task force committee warned that strict action will be taken against any seller who charges more than the fixed price. Business representatives present at the meeting agreed to the set pricing.
Consumers suffer as soybean oil crisis still persists in Dhaka
Chattogram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Farida Khanam presided over the meeting, while Chattogram City Mayor Shahadat Hossain attended as the chief guest.
Farida Khanam said, “There is currently a shortage of edible oil in the market. To resolve this, discussions have been held with all stakeholders. According to the decision, retailers cannot sell loose soybean oil for more than Tk 160 per litre, although they may sell at a lower price if they wish.
However, no one is allowed to charge above the fixed price. Any trader violating this decision, whether in wholesale or retail, will face legal action through the special task force committee, she added.
Speaking at the meeting, Mayor Shahadat Hossain mentioned some other Muslim countries where governments provide subsidies on essential commodities during Ramadan to ensure affordability.
He said that a handful of unscrupulous traders cause sudden price hikes in Bangladesh and due to these dishonest practices, essential commodity prices surge ahead of Ramadan.
“Therefore, a fixed price has been set for edible oil, and any violation will result in strict legal action. Besides the district administration, Chattogram City Corporation will also monitor the market,” he added.
Earlier on Monday, Mayor Shahadat Hossain and DC Farida Khanam visited Khatunganj, the country’s largest wholesale market, following reports of a supply crisis of bottled soybean oil.
During the visit, they found evidence of an artificial shortage of edible oil, prompting a meeting with producers, importers, and wholesalers to address the issue.

The soybean oil (loose) which had been selling at Tk 192-195 per litre in the capital, started selling for Tk 200 per litre on Monday.

A retailer there told UNB that they sold loose Soybean oil at Tk 175 per liter on Sunday morning. In the afternoon on the same day, they bought the same edible oil from the wholesaler at Tk 182 per liter. On Monday morning the same oil the retailer bought at Tk 192 per liter.
Talking to UNB, an additional secretary of commerce ministry in additional charge on import cell said that the Commerce inistry is working to control the price of edible oil.

The ministry will hold a meeting with business leaders regarding alternative sources of edible oil to meet the demand of palm oil, he said, maintaining anonymity.
He also hinted that a huge volume of edible oil has been imported or LCs have been opened to import, so there is no reason for price hike or to worry about shortages.
