A schoolgirl died after being bitten by a snake in Thakurgaon early Thursday. The deceased was identified as Sangita Roy, 13, daughter of Gurudas Roy of Masandangi village in Paria union of Baliadangi upazila. She was an eighth grader at Lohagara High School. Family members said Sangita was bitten on the head by a snake while she was asleep at home in the early hours of Thursday. Initially, the family failed to understand the severity of the bite. They took her to a local exorcist for nearly five hours to perform rituals, but when her condition deteriorated, she was rushed to Thakurgaon 250-bed General Hospital. On-duty doctors said by the time she was brought to the hospital, it was too late to save her life as the venom had already spread. Sangita’s last rites were performed later in the day.

A minor girl died of snakebite in Nandigram upazila of the district Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Sohamoni, 3, daughter of Abdus Sattar of Doupukuria village in the upazila. Morshedul Bari, chairman of Bhatra union parishad, said the child was playing at the backyard of its house in the morning. She was rushed to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where physicians pronounced her dead, the chairman added.
