Police disperse job applicants at Shahbagh using water cannons
Police have dispersed job seekers who blocked Shahbagh intersection demanding appointment of 6,531 assistant teachers in government primary schools in Dhaka and Chattogram divisions.
Police used water cannons to disperse the protesting job applicants around 2:30 pm on Thursday.
Job seekers who have been demanding appointment of 6,531 assistant teachers in government primary schools staged sit-in in front of National Museum at Shahbagh intersection.Several hundred protesters took to the street around 10 am and chanted slogans in favour of their demands.Vehicular movement on the busy road remained disrupted as one-third of the road was partially blocked due to the sit-in causing immense suffering to the commuters.Some female teachers were seen taking shelter near the National Museum, said witnesses.Vehicular movement from Shahbagh intersection to Kataban remained halted due to the protest.On October 31 last year, the government published the final results of the recruitment test declaring 6, 531 candidates as successful.

MATS students block Shahbagh creating traffic chaos
Students of Medical Assistant Training Schools (MATS) have blocked Shahbagh intersection in the capital to press home their various demands.
The students under the banner of General MATS Students’ Unity Council took position at the busy intersection around 11:30 on Sunday, disrupting traffic in Shahbagh and the surrounding areas, demanding the resumption of the recruitment process for vacant positions in the Directorate General of Health Services which has been halted for over 12 years.

Families of July uprising victims block Shahbagh, demand justice
Family members of the victims of the July uprising blocked the busy Shahbagh intersection on Tuesday, demanding justice for the killings and official government recognition.
The protesters, under the banner of the July 24 Shaheed Family, took to the streets to press home their demands, including justice for the victims, proper medical treatment for the injured, and formal recognition from the government.

Police foil madrasa teachers’ attempt to march towards CA’s residence
Police have dispersed a group of madrasa teachers who attempted to march towards the official residence of the Chief Adviser, demanding the nationalisation of independent ebtedayee madrasahs, at the Shahbagh intersection of the capital.
Witnesses said a group of Madrasa teachers from all registered Ebtedayee madrasas under the Bangladesh Madrasa Education Board, brought out a procession on Sunday and gathered in Shahbagh area to press home their various demands, including the nationalisation of independent ebtedayee madrasahs.

Postgraduate doctors block Shahbagh again for raising allowance
Postgraduate trainee doctors have again blocked Shahbagh area demanding an increase in their monthly allowance or the 9th grade pay scale.
According to their previously announced programme they gathered at the Bot-tala of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) at 10 am on Sunday to stage demonstration.
They said they will not leave the road until their demand to raise their allowance to Tk 50,000 from 25,000 is met.
Clash on Ijtema ground: Saad’s follower placed on 2-day remand
The trained doctors said living on Tk 25,000 monthly allowance in Dhaka is extremely difficult and to ensure proper patient care doctors must be given an allowance of Tk 50,000.
They also said they faced harassment in various forms for their movement during the Awami League regime.
Tanveer Ahmed, a trained doctor at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said, "It is very difficult to live on the allowance we currently receive. We are demanding either Tk 50,000 or the 9th-grade pay scale. If our demand is not met, we will not leave Shahbagh."
On December 22, the trainee doctors had blocked Shahbagh to press home the same demand and on December 26, the government increased the allowance by Tk 5,000 to a total of Tk 30,000.
The postgraduate doctors rejected this decision.

Trainee doctors block Shahbagh demanding allowance hike
Postgraduate trainee doctors have blocked Shahbagh intersection demanding an increase in their monthly allowance or the 9th grade pay scale, leading to traffic congestion in the surrounding areas.
Postgraduate trainee doctors from different parts of the country gathered at the BSMMU hospital and took position at the intersection around 1 pm to press home their demand for raising their allowance from Tk 25,000 to Tk 50,000.
They said they will not leave until they are assured by the authorities concerned about fulfilling their demand.

Mahmudul Bashar, a trainee doctor from the Medicine Department of BSMMU and an FCPS Part Two trainee, said, "Currently, we receive an allowance of Tk 25,000 and it is often not paid timely. How can we survive? Considering everything, we should at least be given an allowance of 50,000."
He said the Doctors Movement for Justice Society, along with its affiliated organisation the Postgraduate Private Trainee Doctors Association has been protesting for an allowance increase since 2022.

Man found dead in Shahbagh area
Police recovered the body of a man in the Shahbagh area of Dhaka on Saturday noon.
The deceased was identified as Md. Kalam Hossain, 55.
According to Shahbagh police, the man was found unconscious near Gate 3 of Suhrawardy Udyan at around 1:30pm.

Later, local residents informed the police and took him to the Emergency Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 3:30 PM, where doctors declared him dead.
The body has been sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy, said Sub-Inspector Asaduzzaman Jewel of Shahbagh Police Station.

Outsourcing workers block Shahbagh demanding job nationalisation
Vehicular movement remained suspended on roads adjacent to Shahbagh since Saturday morning as the outsourcing workers from different government institutions blocked the intersection demanding nationalisation of their jobs.
Witnesses said the workers of different companies gathered at Shahbagh intersection around 10 am and put up barricades there, halting traffic movement.
Many bus passengers were seen getting down from the buses and trying to reach their destinations on foot.

Quota protest: Students block Dhaka’s Shahbagh intersection for 3rd day
For the third consecutive day, students blocked Dhaka’s Shahbagh intersection around 11:45 am today (July 04, 2024), protesting the High Court’s decision to reinstate the quota system in government jobs.
Around 11 am, students from various halls of Dhaka University began gathering in front of the Central Library. They then marched through the campus, culminating in a massive rally at Shahbagh intersection.
Protest against quota: Students block Shahbagh for 2nd day
Some students reported that as they were leaving their halls to join the rally, activists from the Chhatra League at Masterda Surja Sen Hall locked the gate to prevent them from participating. However, the main procession proceeded to Surja Sen Hall, broke the lock, and freed the students to join the protest.
Earlier, on Tuesday and Wednesday, the protesters had blocked major highways and intersections in the capital, demanding the cancellation of the quota system.

Bus catches fire in Dhaka's Shahbagh
A passenger bus caught fire in the capital's Shahbagh area on Saturday night.
The fire broke out at around 11:25 pm, said Mustazirur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station.
On information, a firefighting unit rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire.
The fire might have originated from a technical fault, added the OC.
Police are investigating the matter, he said.
However, no causalities were reported in the fire.
