Gas supply in Bangladesh dropped sharply by around 400 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) after one of the country's two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) went offline due to a technical fault, authorities said Tuesday. Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company issued a notice Tuesday morning warning customers of low gas pressure across its entire service area as a result of the sudden supply shortfall. The pressure drop is expected to affect Gazaria, Meghna Ghat, Sonargaon, Narayanganj, South Dhaka and all other areas under the Titas Gas network. The utility did not specify how long the disruption would last, but expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to consumers. Bangladesh operates two FSRUs for liquefied natural gas (LNG) import and regasification, which together play a critical role in meeting the country's growing energy demand. The outage of one unit represents a significant reduction in daily gas availability.

Gas supply will remain suspended in parts of Dhaka for 11 hours -- from 2pm on Saturday to 1am on Sunday -- for emergency repair works. According to Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited, the areas where gas supply to all categories of customers will be suspended include Tejgaon, Mohakhali, Gulshan, Banani, Natunbazar and Badda Khil Barirtech. Consumers in areas in the vicinity may experience low pressure in gas supply during the period, Titas said in a press release.
