Abrar’s mother demands quick execution of verdict, arrest of fugitive convicts
Rokeya Khatun, mother of Buet student Abrar Fahad, demanded execution of the High Court verdict soon and arrest of the fugitive convicts immediately.
Rokeya Khatun came up with her remarks while talking to reporters at PTI road in Kushtia district town after the pronouncement of the judgment.
Rokeya, Abrar’s grandfather Abdul Gafur Biswas, her maternal aunts Nilu and Momtaz Begum expressed satisfaction over the HC verdict.
"I am happy with the verdict of the High Court today. Not only us, but people all over the country are happy. The court upheld the verdict announced in 2022. When the verdict was first announced the people of the country expressed satisfaction. I express my gratitude to the current government, judiciary, students, journalists and the country’s people. Six years after his death, no one has forgotten my son.” she said.
All educational institutions of the country should be free from ragging so that all educational institutions become safe, she said.
The High Court on Sunday upheld the trial court’s verdict confirming the death penalty for 20 students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) and life imprisonment for five others in the sensational Abrar Fahad murder case.
A High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain delivered the verdict in a jam-packed courtroom.
Of the total 25 accused in the case, five are on the run.
On December 8, 2021, a Dhaka court sentenced 20 Buet students to death and handed life imprisonment to five others for their involvement in the murder.

Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of Buet’s Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) department, was beaten to death on October 6, 2019, allegedly by activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Sher-e-Bangla Hall.
The attack was reportedly triggered by a Facebook post Abrar had made about water-sharing issues between Bangladesh and India. His body was later found on the dormitory’s staircase.
The following day, Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah, filed a murder case at Chawkbazar Police Station. The incident sparked nationwide outrage, leading to widespread protests.

HC upholds death sentences for 20 Buet students in Abrar Fahad murder case
The High Court (HC) on Sunday upheld the trial court’s verdict, confirming the death penalty for 20 students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) and life imprisonment for five others in the sensational Abrar Fahad murder case.
A High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain delivered the verdict in a jam-packed courtroom.
Earlier, on Saturday, the HC had scheduled Sunday for pronouncing its verdict on the death references and appeals filed by the convicts. The hearing on these matters concluded on February 24, after which the case was kept under review.

Convicts and sentences
The 20 students sentenced to death are: Mehedi Hassan Rasel, Anik Sarker, Mehedi Hassan Robin, Ifty Mosharaf Sakal, Moniruzzaman Monir, Meftahul Islam Jiyon, Majedur Rahman, Muzahidur Rahman, Tabakhairul Islam Tanvir, Hossen Mohammad Toha, Shamim Billah, Nazmus Shadat, Muntasir Al Jemi, Mizanur Rahman, Mahmud Setu, Shamsul Arifin Rafat, Morshed Omorto Islam, Ehtesamul Rabbi, Morshed Uzzaman Jishan, Mujtaba Rafeed,
The five students who received life imprisonment are: Muhtasim Fuyad, Akash Hossain, Mowaz Abu Horaira, Omit Shaha and Ishtiaq Hassan Munna.
Of the total 25 accused in the case, five are on the run.
The HC began hearing the death reference and appeals on November 28 last year before reaching its final decision today.

Abrar murder: 25 accused indicted again
A Dhaka tribunal on Wednesday framed charges against 25 accused in the case filed in connection with the killing of Abrar Fahad, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.
Judge Abu Zafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 indicted the accused afresh and also fixed September 14 for submitting their statements in self-defence.
The court granted the application and re-framed charges against the defendants following an appeal by the prosecution filed by the public prosecutor Abu Abdulla Bhuyian.
PP Abdulla confirmed the information to the press.
“A few things were missed out during the formation of the complaint. Hence we applied to indict the accused again,” he added.
Abrar, 21, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering, was beaten to death reportedly by then Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders at Sher-e-Bangla Hall of the university.

He was found dead on the staircase of the hall in the early hours of October 7 after he was taken to room No-2011 around 8pm on October 6 and beaten mercilessly.
His murder sparked nationwide outcry.
Later, Abrar's father filed a case with Chawkbazar police station over the matter.
On Sep 15 2019 , charges were framed against 25 accused in the murder case.
