East West University celebrates maiden Research Day
East West University (EWU) organized its inaugural Research Day 2025 ceremony on Saturday at its campus in the capital’s Aftabnagar, aiming to foster innovation, strengthen academic-industry partnerships, and highlight the pivotal role of research in national development.
The full-day event featured a series of sessions dedicated to advancing the university’s research culture.
EWU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Shams Rahman delivered the welcome speech during the inaugural session, setting the tone for the day's deliberations. Shelley A Mubdi, Member of the Board of Trustees, attended the programme as the Chief Guest, while Professor Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees and Founding Vice Chancellor of EWU, presided over the session.
The central segment of the event included two engaging panel discussions. The first, titled "Importance of Research in Transforming Bangladesh into an Innovative Nation," examined how strategic research initiatives could drive national progress.
The second panel, "Importance of Academia-Industry Collaborative Research: Opportunities and Challenges," explored ways to enhance cooperation between academic institutions and industrial stakeholders.
Distinguished academics and industry professionals participated in the discussions, including Professor Haseena Khan, Professor Dr Rashidul Haque, Dr AKM Masud, and industry representatives Humaira Azam, Firoze Mohammad, and Shihab Ahmad.

A standout segment of the day was the "Three-Minute Presentation" competition, where students and faculty members from various departments presented their ongoing research projects in a concise and engaging format.
The programme concluded with an awards ceremony held at the Manzur Elahi Auditorium, where 72 researchers were recognized with crests and certificates for their contributions. Professor Dr Md Mozammel Huq Azad Khan of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering received the “Lifetime Achievement” award for his significant contributions to research.
EWU Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr M Ashik Mosaddik offered the vote of thanks, marking the end of the event. Faculty members and students actively participated throughout the day, reflecting the university’s commitment to advancing research excellence.

EWU holds 24th convocation, 2885 students graduate
The 24th Convocation of East West University (EWU) was held on Wednesday at the university’s Aftabnagar Sports Ground in the capital, with a total of 2,885 undergraduate and graduate students receiving their degrees.
Education Adviser Professor Dr Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar conferred the degrees on the graduating students. Six students were also awarded gold medals in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements.
Addressing the ceremony, Dr Abrar congratulated the new graduates and highlighted the growing opportunities created by advanced technologies.
He also cautioned against the rising challenges of intolerance, ultranationalism, and narrow-minded attitudes, urging the younger generation to confront these issues and work towards building a world of justice, peace, and tolerance.
Convocation speaker Syed Nasim Manzur, managing director of Apex Footwear Limited, emphasised the importance of entrepreneurship in shaping the country’s future over the next 25 to 30 years.
He encouraged graduates to prepare for entrepreneurship rather than solely seeking employment, stressing the need to understand various stages of a business venture to avoid potential losses; and referring to China as a role model, he noted that contributing to the national GDP is possible by establishing both large and small enterprises.
Special guest Professor Dr S M A Faiz, chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), said the UGC has adopted new approaches to ensure a better educational environment in Bangladesh. He also advised the graduates to prioritize family values alongside their professional responsibilities.
EWU Board of Trustees Chairperson and founding Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammed Farashuddin called for the formation of a standard Education Commission and the implementation of an innovative and modern education policy.
He urged graduates to effectively utilize the country’s resources and opportunities to counter the prevailing notion that Bangladesh is overly dependent on imports.
Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Shams Rahman underscored the significance of technological and communication skills, alongside creativity, in transforming the country's population into a productive powerhouse. He encouraged graduates to move beyond traditional boundaries and pursue innovative ideas.
The ceremony was attended by National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman, Vice Chancellors of different universities, cultural personalities, members of the Board of Trustees, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Treasurer, Registrar, Deans, Chairpersons, faculty members, staff, graduates, and their families.

EWU holds doa mahfil for late Syed Manzur Elahi
East West University (EWU) has organised a condolence meeting and doa mahfil in memory of its late chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Syed Manzur Elahi, who passed away on March 12 at the age of 83.
The programmes were held at the Manzur Elahi Auditorium of the university on Tuesday.
Family members of the late Syed Manzur Elahi, EWU vice chancellor; Pro-VC, treasurer, deans, faculty members; officials; staff; students of the university; and distinguished guests from various sectors of the country attended the condolence meeting. They shared heartfelt tributes to the deceased and prayed for the peace of his soul.
EDU Chief Adviser Prof Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, also a close friend of the late Elahi, shared precious memories from their 60 years of friendship.
He spoke about Manzur Elahi’s various social service activities and mentioned that he conducted his business by strictly adhering to laws and ensuring worker satisfaction.
Apex Group chairman Manzur Elahi dies
Farashuddin added that Manzur Elahi never took advantage of political affiliations, even when he served as an adviser to the caretaker government twice.
He also suggested that the interim government should honour the “Sadhinota Padak” award to a distinguished person like Manzur Elahi.
In his speech, Syed Nasim Manzur, son of the late Syed Manzur Elahi, shared that his father was concerned about the students from low-income families studying at East West University and had instructed to give them special importance.
EWU VC Professor Dr Shams Rahman, Dean of the Liberal Arts and Social Science Faculty, the registrar, and administrative officials of EWU shared their memories of the late Manzur Elahi on the occasion.
They offered special prayers for the peaceful repose of the departed soul.

EWU hosts freshers’ orientation for the 2024 Spring Semester
The orientation programme for the newly admitted students for the Spring Semester 2024 of the East West University (EWU) was held in the EWU campus, Aftabnagar in the capital on Thursday.
According to a press release, approximately 1600 students were admitted to undergraduate and graduate programmes in the 13 different departments this semester.

The objective of the orientation programme was to welcome the new students and introduce them to university facilities, faculty members, the academic systems and the rules and regulations of the institution. Each Department of the EWU arranged individual programmes for their newly admitted students.
Education Minister calls for further review of exam and evaluation system
Professor Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, Chief Adviser of the EWU and former Governor of Bangladesh Bank joined the orientation programme, along with EWU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Shams Rahman, Pro-VC Professor Dr M Ashike Mosaddik, Deans and several successful alumni members of the University.
Speakers welcomed the freshers to the EWU campus and encouraged them to try to work harder and be future leaders of the country.
JnU to organise 3-day theatre festival from January 28
Along with academic education, they also urged the newly admitted students to make the best use of university resources such as clubs, libraries, research laboratories, and take the opportunity to develop human qualities and innovative abilities.
