Day 2 of hartal underway with regular traffic on Dhaka streets
The second day of the countrywide 48-hour hartal, called by BNP, Jamaat and like-minded opposition parties, protesting the general election schedule, is underway.
This is the first hartal being observed by the opposition parties since the Election Commission announced the polls schedule.
The ongoing hartal will end at 6 am tomorrow (November 21, 2023).
The presence of public transport on Dhaka roads seems usual this morning despite heightened tension and fear of violence.

BNP, Jamaat and likeminded opposition parties called the hartal after they had earlier observed five countrywide blockades of roads, rail and waterways. The blockades were marked by frequent burning of vehicles, particularly buses, in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country.
The presence of law enforcement personnel at several points in Dhaka is higher this morning compared to the blockades.
The first day of the hartal, yesterday, was marked by sporadic incidents of arson attacks and clashes.
According to reports, ten people were injured in a clash between police and BNP in Sunamganj while a primary school and a number of vehicles including a train were torched yesterday across the country.

A total of 235 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and 460 patrol teams of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were deployed in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country to maintain law and order during the hartal.
Earlier on Saturday, BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi called upon people from all walks of life and opposition leaders and activists to observe the hartal peacefully and make it a success.

The presence of public transport on Dhaka roads seemed usual despite heightened tension and fear of violence.
Guardians were seen rushing their children to respective schools safely as final exams are starting in many educational institutions.
Rickshaws are dominating Dhaka streets while a few private vehicles are seen plying the streets.
In Chuadanga, leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies brought out a procession in support of the blockade on Chuadanga-Jhenaidah road at Rail Bazar area of the district town in the morning.

They also hurled brick chips targeting some vehicles passing through the area.
Multiple cases of arson violence were reported in places in Dhaka and across the country since Wednesday evening, on the first day of the 48-hour road-rail-waterways blockade.
On November 6, BNP, Jamaat and like-minded opposition parties announced the latest blockade across the country from Wednesday morning.
Another bus set ablaze in Dhaka’s Tantibazar amid blockade
The opposition parties gave a day’s break from its action programme on Tuesday as BNP observes November 7 as the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’.
The latest spell of agitation was announced on the last day of the opposition’s previous 48-hour nationwide blockade which was marked by incidents of violence, including clashes with police, vandalising and burning vehicles .
Bus set on fire in Gazipur amid blockade
Earlier last week, the opposition’s three-day countrywide blockade saw clashes and widespread burning and vandalising vehicles, leaving four people — three in Kishoreganj and one in Sylhet — killed and over three dozen vehicles either burned or vandalised.
Bangabazar Market fire in Dhaka causes huge traffic jam
The devastating fire that broke out at Bangabazar market in Dhaka on Tuesday (April 04, 2023) morning caused an unusual traffic jam around the market area due to the closure of adjacent roads.
Fire service, police, RAB, army, air force and navy are trying to extinguish the blaze that broke out around 6:10 am.

Jayita Das, senior assistant police commissioner of DMP Traffic Lalbagh Zone, said that traffic movement in the adjacent areas has been stopped to ease the fire control activities.
Traffic movement has been closed and limited on the roads in front of the High Court-Gulistan, Banga Bazar, Golap Shah Mazar police headquarters to Dhaka Medical, he added.
This instruction about traffic movement will remain in force in this area until the situation turns normal, said the officer adding that general public are requested to use alternative roads.

Bishwa Ijtema: Traffic movement to be halted on Abdullahpur, Bhogra, Kamarpara tomorrow morning
As done during the first phase of Bishwa Ijtema, Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) has issued some traffic directives to ease devotees commuting to and from the congregation ground.
Movements of vehicles from Tongi to Bhogra Bypass on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, Kamarpara Road, Abdullahpur to Bypile on Ashulia Road will remain suspended from 6 am Sunday (January 22, 2023) till the end of Akheri Munajat, said GMP Commissioner Mollah Nazrul Islam.

The GMP commissioner requested commuters to use the bypass road to avoid traffic gridlock.
The second phase of Bishwa Ijtema started on Friday (January 20, 2023) morning and it will end through the Akheri Munajat on Sunday morning.

GMP issues traffic directives to reduce sufferings of Ijtema devotees
Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) has issued some directives regarding traffic movement to reduce suffering of Biswa Ijtema devotees.
Movements of vehicles on some roads in Gazipur will remain suspended for around six hours due to the ongoing Biswa Ijtema.
GMP Commissioner Mollah Nazrul Islam disclosed this in a press briefing at police control room set up at the Ijtema venue saying that the traffic movement has been rearranged as devotees from remote areas of the country will join the Akheri Munajat (final prayers) on Sunday morning.
As part of the rationalized traffic system, movement of vehicles will remain suspended from 12am on Saturday till the Akheri Munajat (Sunday morning) from Tongi to Bhogra Bypass on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, Khamarpara road, Abdullahpur to Bypile on Ashulia road, he said.

The GMP commissioner requested people to use the bypass road to avoid traffic gridlock.
The first phase of Biswa Ijtema started on Friday morning and it will end through the Akheri Munajat on Sunday morning.
Traffic movement to be restricted at Dhaka Cantonment Monday
Traffic movement will remain restricted inside the Dhaka Cantonment area on Monday due to observance of the ‘Armed Forces Day 2022’.
The movement will be restricted in the area from 7am to 11am and 12pm to 7pm, according to a notification from the Inter Service Public Relation Directorate (ISPR) issued on November 16.

All types of vehicles, except vehicles carrying HSC candidates, people staying inside the cantonment area and invited guests at the event, are requested to avoid the Shaheed Jahangir gate to the staff road during the period, it added.
