A drug addict allegedly killed his mother with a sharp weapon after she refused to give him money to buy drugs in Rajshahi city on Saturday night. The victim was identified as Sohagi Khatun, 55, wife of Azizul Islam and mother of two sons and a daughter. After the attack, locals said, the man left her body on the street and locked himself inside his house before being arrested by police. They said the incident occurred around 9:30 pm near the old Krishi Bank in Khorkhori area of the city. According to them, the accused, Suman, demanded money from his mother for drugs.  When she refused, he stabbed her repeatedly in the chest and abdomen with a sharp chopper, killing her on the spot. Neighbours later informed police, who arrived at the scene and arrested him. Police recovered the body and sent it to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. Neighbour Mozammel Haque said Suman had long been a drug addict and was involved in petty theft. He often carried a chopper or a spade, he added. Chandrimma Police Station Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam said the accused is being interrogated and legal action is underway.

A grocery shop owner was shot and wounded by snatchersin Pallabi area of Dhaka on Thursday morning. The victim was identified as Mohammad Hossain Dipu, 46. Dipu’s wife Afroza said three masked men on a motorbike shot her husband above his left knee and fled after snatching Tk 17000. He was first taken to Kurmitola General Hospital in critical condition and later transferred to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 8:45 am. Eleven people including an Upazila Nirbahi Officer and an Officer-in-Charge were infected with coronavirus in Netrakona district on Monday night.   Deputy Commissioner Md Moinul Islam said the samples of  the infected people were collected on Saturday and the report came on Monday night.   The laboratory of Microbiology Department of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital has been conducting coronavirus test in the district, he added.     According to Civil Surgeon Office sources, among the newly infected people six are from Kendua upazila, three from Barhatta and one each from Modon and Atpara upazila.
