Malaysia on Monday expressed its support for Bangladesh’s aspiration to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), recognising its growing economic significance and strategic role in the region, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Both leaders - Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim- noted that Bangladesh’s future participation would strengthen regional economic integration, trade, investment, and supply chains. The Bangladeshi side expressed its appreciation for Malaysia’s support and reaffirmed its commitment to undertaking the necessary measures towards accession to the agreement, according to a joint statement shared by the Ministry. The leaders exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and reiterated their support for a just and lasting peace for the Palestinian people and expressed support for continued dialogue and diplomatic efforts towards a durable and comprehensive peace in the region. They emphasised the importance of joint efforts in addressing traditional and non-traditional security challenges such as climate change, food security, human trafficking and transnational crime. Both leaders emphasised the need to address these challenges in a holistic manner. The two leaders also acknowledged the importance of coordinated actions within international organisations such as the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). They also committed to jointly supporting initiatives to strengthen the world order, justice, and compliance with international law. Both leaders expressed concerns over the prolonged Rohingya crisis, said the joint statement. Malaysia commended Bangladesh’s humanitarian endeavour in hosting the forcibly displaced Rohingyas and reaffirmed its solidarity with Bangladesh. Malaysia reiterated its commitment to support efforts aimed at achieving a lasting resolution of the crisis which lies in the safe, dignified, and sustainable repatriation of the displaced Rohingyas to Myanmar. Bangladesh expressed appreciation for Malaysia's continued support and principled advocacy on the Rohingya issue at the bilateral, regional, and international platforms, including within ASEAN, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the United Nations, and other multilateral forums. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman reiterated Bangladesh’s strong desire to formalise its engagement with ASEAN by pursuing ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner status. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim welcomed Bangladesh’s interest and expressed Malaysia's readiness to constructively support Dhaka’s aspirations within the ASEAN framework. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman expressed deep appreciation and sincere gratitude to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the Government of Malaysia for the warm welcome and gracious hospitality extended to him and his delegation during the visit.

Bangladesh and Malaysia held bilateral talks in Putrajaya on Monday with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim leading their respective sides. A wide range of issues, covering ICT, energy, infrastructure, manpower, halal industry, agro-processing, education, skills development, defence, digital economy, semiconductors and other high-value sectors, were discussed at the meeting held at Perdana Putra, the office of the Malaysian Prime Minister. The Rohingya crisis and regional cooperation also came up for discussion. After the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cultural cooperation was signed in the presence of the prime ministers of the two countries. In addition, a document on cooperation in research and capacity building in counter-terrorism and a bilateral investment-related document were exchanged. The foreign ministers of the two countries exchanged the documents. Later, Tarique Rahman and Anwar Ibrahim spoke at a joint press conference. The Bangladesh delegation included Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury, State Minister for Power and Energy Aninda Islam Amit, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir, Finance and Planning Affairs Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Education Adviser Mahdi Amin, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam and other senior officials. Following the press conference, Tarique Rahman, his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman and members of the Bangladesh delegation will attend a state luncheon hosted by Anwar Ibrahim at his official residence, Seri Perdana Complex. Renowned Malaysian artistes are expected to perform cultural programmes during the luncheon, including songs in both Bangla and Malay, reflecting the close friendship between the two nations.  

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim began a one-on-one meeting on Monday morning in Putrajaya to further strengthen the close relations between the two countries and deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The closed-door meeting began around 9:30am local time at Perdana Putra, the office of the Malaysian Prime Minister. "The two prime ministers are holding a one-on-one meeting," said Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Additional Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon. The meeting marks Tarique Rahman's first official bilateral engagement with a foreign head of government since taking office and is a key event of his maiden overseas visit as prime minister. Following the one-on-one meeting, bilateral talks between the two countries will begin, with the Prime Ministers of Bangladesh and Malaysia leading their respective delegations. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Tuesday morning warmly welcomed Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus as he arrived in Malaysia's administrative capital to have official talks and discuss ways to strengthen the relationship in diverse areas of mutual benefit.  Prof Yunus was accorded an official welcome ceremony at Perdana Putra Complex where Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim received the Chief Adviser as the red carpet was rolled out. He inspected the guard of honour as the national anthems of both countries were played. Prof Yunus then was introduced to the Malaysian delegation, and he presented the Bangladeshi delegation to the Prime Minister before signing the guest book. They will hold official talks to review the progress in diverse areas and outline steps towards elevating the relations between Dhaka and Kuala Lumpur to a new height. Following the private and delegation-level talks, the two leaders will witness (10:30am to 10:45am) the signing of MoUs and exchange notes, after which they will address a joint press conference. Both in the private and delegation-level meetings, the issues of recruiting new Bangladeshi workers in various sectors of Malaysia, recruiting more professionals, and ensuring the facilities and benefits of workers will be discussed with great importance, officials told UNB. Both leaders are expected to review the progress of Bangladesh-Malaysia relations, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, labour, education, tourism and defence.  The discussions will also include regional and international developments of mutual interest, including the repatriation of the Rohingyas. The King of Negeri Sembilan and Chancellor of UKM, Malaysia’s Minister of Higher Education, pro-chancellors and vice-chancellors will attend the ceremony, where Prof Yunus will be presented with an academic gown. Energy Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan and BIDA Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun will hold talks with the Vice President of Petronas. Separate meetings have been requested for Expatriates’ Welfare Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul and Special Envoy Lutfey Siddiqi with Malaysia’s Minister for Human Resources, Minister for Agriculture and Food Security (fisheries and deep-sea fishing), and Minister for Sports. The Chief Adviser is scheduled to return to Dhaka on Wednesday night. Dhaka’s ASEAN Ambition In late July, Prof Yunus renewed his call for Malaysia to support Bangladesh’s bid to become a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). "We want to become part of ASEAN, and we will need your support," he told Nurul Izzah Anwar, Vice President of Malaysia’s People’s Justice Party and daughter of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, during a meeting at the State Guest House Jamuna. Want to become part of ASEAN, says Prof Yunus seeking Malaysia’s support Bangladesh applied to become a sectoral dialogue partner of ASEAN in 2020. The Chief Adviser expressed the hope that Malaysia, as the current ASEAN chair, will take an active role in facilitating Bangladesh’s application and eventual full membership. He also encouraged Malaysian firms to invest in Bangladesh, highlighting the country’s demographic advantage. "Asia is ageing rapidly, but Bangladesh has a lot of young people. Half of our population is under 27. Set up your industries here and export from Bangladesh — it will benefit both our economies," he said.
