Referring to the existing extradition treaty with India, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir on Thursday said they want former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who now faces the death penalty, to be handed over to Bangladesh. “We want Hasina to be handed over. She will be handed over. She is a terrorist. She is a fled criminal. There is an active extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India,” he told reporters, noting that there is no need or requirement to give her a passport. Kobir made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after seeing off Liu Haixing, Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee. “Is she coming to visit her in-laws’ residence in Rangpur that we need to give her a passport so she can make that visit? We have an active extradition treaty with India. You do not need a passport to arrest terrorists and criminals. This is a matter of handover, and a judicial process is in place. Should we treat her like an ordinary commercial traveller and tell her to come and visit her in-laws’ residence?” he said.
