BNP men attacked police, vandalised cars in Dhaka’s Kakrail: DB says
Additional Commissioner of Detective Branch (DB) Harun-or-Rashid has said that some BNP activists attacked police in front of the Judges' Residence Complex in Dhaka’s Kakrail earlier today (October 28, 2023).
“Some policemen were injured. Furthermore, they carried out an attack, vandalised and set some vehicles on fire in front of IDB Bhaban at Kakrail,” he said while talking with reporters in front of Kakrail Church.
Currently, BGB members are deployed at Kakrail Church crossing.
He said police have video footage of the incidents.
“We will identify those involved and take appropriate action,” he said.

The BNP activists who were engaged in violence escaped the scene, and the situation is now under control, he added.
Earlier, a chase and counter-chase between police and BNP leaders, activists occurred in Dhaka’s Kakrail area.
Witnesses said leaders and activists of BNP brought out a procession in the Kakrail area and started going towards InterContinental hotel around 1 pm.
At one stage, police obstructed them, and BNP leaders, activists started throwing brick chips at the law enforcers.

Later, police fired rubber bullets, used sound grenades and tear gas shells to disperse them.
The grand rally of BNP has begun in front of its Nayapaltan central office with the participation of thousands of leaders and activists of the party and its associate bodies to press home their one-point demand for holding the upcoming national election under a non-party government.

200 BNP men detained from under-construction building in Dhaka’s Kakrail area
Detectives have detained 200 leaders and activists of BNP, believed to have gathered for the party’s grand rally today, from an under-construction building in Dhaka’s Kakrail area early today (October 28, 2023).
Salahuddin Mia, officer-in-charge of Paltan Model Police Station, said a team of Detective Branch (DB) police conducted a drive in Kakrail at night.
Harun-or-Rashid, additional commissioner of DB under Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said some crude bombs were exploded in the area.
AL, BNP get conditional permission for rallies
After hearing the sounds of explosion, police and DB conducted a drive at an under-construction building and detained 200 leaders and activists of BNP, he said.
They came from different parts of the country ahead of BNP’s grand rally, he added.
BNP and its allies set to hold rallies as part of their ‘final push’
Police also recovered a vehicle owned by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, placards, cooking items, sticks, iron rods and some unexploded crude bombs from the spot, the DB official said.
Rajib Al Masud, deputy commissioner of DB Motijheel Division, said that 15-20 bombs were hurled from the under-construction building targeting police around 1:30 am. “Police are trying to arrest those involved in the incident,” he said.
Panic grips capital city as AL and BNP flex muscles ahead of Saturday’s rallies
Two policemen were injured in the explosion and they were taken to Rajarbagh Central Police Hospital, said Harun.
“Our goal was to ensure that no one creates any untoward incident centering BNP’s grand rally. There are 7-8 such buildings and many people have gathered in those buildings, from what we’ve heard. We’ll conduct drives there as well,” he added.
Bank recruitment test question leak: BUET Prof Nikhil, 15 others indicted
A Dhaka court today (July 24, 2023) indicted 16 people, including BUET Professor Nikhil Ranjan Dhar, in a case filed over the question paper leak of bank recruitment examination in 2021.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tofazzal Hossain passed the order to frame the charges against Nikhil Ranjan Dhar and 15 others.
Before that, the magistrate dismissed the petitions submitted for discharging Nikhil and others from the charges in the case.

The recruitment test for five state-owned banks was held on November 6, 2021.
Sub-inspector Sukant Biswas of Tejgaon Zonal Team filed a case at Badda Police Station under the Public Examinations (Offences) Act following the question leak on November 10 the same year.
On November 21 that year, BUET removed Prof Nikhil Ranjan Dhar from the post of head of Industrial and Production Engineering Department and also relieved him of all exam responsibilities.
In December, 2021, BUET authorities asked Nikhil to explain his involvement in leaking the questions of recruitment exam for five Banks.

On November 16, 2022, Shamim Ahmed, a sub-inspector of the Detective Branch (DB) and the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet excluding Prof Nikhil as an accused.
Earlier this year, a Dhaka court summoned the investigation officer to show cause why and how he relieved Prof Nikhil from the charges.
Following that, investigation officer Shamim submitted a supplementary charge against Nikhil to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka.
MSF voices concern over death of Alal Dewan after DB men ‘picked him up’
Manabadhikar Shongskriti Foundation (MSF) on Monday expressed deep concern over the death of a man in hospital on June 16, after Detective Branch (DB) of police picked him up on June 6.
Alal Dewan, 50, died at National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases on Friday.
MSF also demanded fair investigation into the death and legal action against those involved in the incident.

According to reports, a 33-year-old woman named Fatema Akter was killed in the capital's Baunia area on June 5.
Later, a case was filed against Fatema's husband over the murder. Alal was the caretaker of the building where Fatema was killed.
Alal’s family members alleged that DB men picked him up for interrogation on June 6.

On June 15 (Thursday), hospital authorities informed the family that Alal was admitted to the hospital. When they went to the hospital, they told Alal’s family to go to the court on Sunday, family members said.
On June 16, Anwar, sub-inspector of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station, phoned Alal's family members and said that Alal “died of heart attack.”

Shakib Khan sues film producer over murder attempt, extortion
Dhaka, Mar 23 (UNB)- Dhallywood star Shakib Khan on Thursday (March 23, 2023) filed a case against film producer Rahmat Ullah over murder attempt and extortion.
The actor filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arafatul Rakib, confirmed his lawyer Tanvir Ahmed.

After recording the plaintiff's statement, the court summoned Rahmat Ullah to appear before it on April 26, said Tanvir.
Earlier on Sunday, Shakib went to the Detective Branch (DB) office of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and filed a written complaint against Rahmat Ullah who brought a rape allegation against him.
On March 15, Rahmat Ullah filed a written complaint against the actor in the Bangladesh Film Artists Association, accusing him of sexual misconduct and raping an Australian woman, a co-producer of the film "Operation Agneepath".

Fardin’s father to file ‘no confidence’ petition against DB probe report claiming his death suicide
Kazi Nuruddin Rana, father of Buet student Fardin Noor, who was found dead in Shitalakhkhya River on November 7, last year, filed a petition seeking time to file a no-confidence petition against the DB report saying that he died by suicide.
Kazi Nuruddin Rana, filed the petition before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shanta Islam on Tuesday.
The court also fixed March 16 for hearing the petition.
Earlier, on February 6, DB police submitted the final report before a Dhaka court clearing Amatullah Bushra, a private university student, of the murder charges in the case and settling that Fardin died by suicide.
The court also fixed February 14 for hearing the final report of DB.
Besides, Advocate Habibur Rahman filed a petition seeking permanent bail to Bushra in the case.
The court also extended her bail till March 16.
DB Inspector Yasin Shikder, also the investigating officer of the case, submitted the report to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka.
Fardin, a 3rd year student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology’s civil engineering department and a resident of Qutubpur area in Narayanganj's Fatullah was found dead from the Shitalakhkhya River, behind a cotton mill at Siddhirganj, on November 7, three days after he went missing.

Sheikh Farhad, a physician at Narayanganj General Hospital where the autopsy was done, said there were several injury marks on Fardin’s head and body.
Kazi Nuruddin Rana, Fardin’s father, filed a case in connection with his son’s killing with Rampura Police Station on the same day. The case was later transferred to Detective Branch (DB) Police.
Meanwhile, DB police arrested Bushra from her Banasree residence in Dhaka on November 10.
After a long 38-day investigation, the DB chief said on December 14 that Fardin roamed alone around different areas of Dhaka on the night of November 4 before he went missing.
“Fardin was not murdered, he committed suicide by jumping into the river from Sultana Kamal Bridge on November 4 out of desperation,” he said.
On January 8, Judge Tahsin Iftekhar of Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court-7 granted bail to Bushra in the case after hearing a bail petition.
On January 10, Bushra walked out of the Kashimpur Women's Central Jail, two months after her arrest.
After 5 clueless weeks, DB cracks case of CNG driver's murder
Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) believe they have cracked a hitherto clueless murder in the city's Dakkhin Khan, arresting six gangsters from Dhaka and Moulvibazar.
The arrestees were identified as Md. Khaled Khan Shubo, Md. Tipu, Md. Hasanul Islam alias Hasan, Md. Jahangir Hossain, Abdul Majid and Md. Sumon.
The detectives also recovered a Swiss gear, an autorickshaw used by the victim and a mobile phone from their custody.
Based on secret information, the Airport Zonal team of DB (Uttara division) carried out simultaneous drives in a number of places in Dhaka city and Rajanagar thana areas of Moulvibazar district on Friday and early Saturday and arrested the six gangsters.
Briefing reporters at DMP's media center on Saturday, Additional Commissioner (Detective) of DMP Mohammad Haroon-ur-Rasheed said at around 9pm on December 7 last year, victim Md. Mustafa came out from his Dakkhin Khan residence to drive his battery-powered autorickshaw. As he did not return at night, his mother registered a general diary with Dakkhin Khan police station.
Later on December 17 at around 1.45 am, the victim's mother came to know through a local that an unidentified dead body was found on a vacant plot in Asian City under Dakkhin Khan police station. The victim's mother and father quickly went to the spot and identified their son Mustafa. In this incident, the victim's mother then filed a murder case at Dakkhin khan police station.
The DB chief said that the airport zonal team of DB (Uttara Division) started a shadow investigation of the case. During the investigation, the accused involved in the incident of the case were identified using information technology. After that raids were conducted in Rajnagar Thana area of Moulvibazar district along with various areas of the capital and arrests were made.
Fardin's death: BUET students say DB evidence confirms it’s suicide
A group of 3rd year students from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) said on Saturday that they do not have any doubt that their fellow Fardin Noor Porosh committed suicide.
They said Detective Branch (DB) of police showed them enough evidence that drew the conclusion that it was suicide.
The BUET students made the remarks at a media briefing on Saturday regarding Fardin’s death.

The media briefing was originally scheduled for December 15, but they delayed the event as DB police called them to see the evidence they got before going to talk to media.
The students said that the DB police showed them enough evidence that it can only be a suicide, although they could not prove Fardin’s physical appearance on the video footage, which went viral over the social and news media recently.
All the documents and evidence were virtual, they said adding that the DB police traced Fardin's location that night and checked his conversation but found nothing doubtful.

They also said when they asked the detectives the reason for the suicide, they couldn’t give them any particular reason.
The students said the detectives told them that Fardin was going through problems like financial crisis and depression, and they showed proof for those claims from Fardin’s conversations.
They said after seeing the evidence, they did not find any more logical questions and clues to ask for as the detectives answered all the questions in the DB office.
The students said that based on the evidence of the DB police, the BUET students collectively reached the decision that it was a suicide, and they are not going to hold any rally or programme regarding Fardin’s death.
They said they would stand by Fardin's family if they take any legal and logical step in this regard.
Buet student Fardin died after jumping off bridge, Rab says
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student Fardin Noor Parash died after jumping off Sultana Kamal Bridge, Rab has said.
Commander Khandaker Al Moin, legal and media wing director of Rab, disclosed the information at a press conference at Rab headquarters around over one month after the body of the student was recovered from the Shitalakhkhya river on November 7.
On November 4, the day he went missing, Fardin dropped off his girlfriend Amatullah Bushra, a 3rd year student of East West University who is now in jail, in Rampura around 9pm.
After that he went to a bridge in Keraniganj and then to Johnson Road, Gulistan and Jatrabari respectively till 2am.
Then he went to Sultana Kamal Bridge around 2:34 am. He was alone on the bridge till 2:37am, the Rab official said.

Police recovered Fardin’s body from the Shitalakhkhya river, behind a cotton mill at Siddhirganj, on November 7, three days after he went missing.
Fardin jumped off the bridge after roaming around in Dhaka, the Rab officer said, adding they scrutinized his whereabouts.
The Rab officer said they tightened intelligence surveillance to figure out the reason behind the death.
He said they submitted all relevant documents including CCTV footage and digital footprints to the investigation officer of the case on Wednesday.
The victim’s father filed a murder case against some unidentified people at Rampura police station on November 9.

On the following day, police arrested Bushra from her residence in connection with the death.
Earlier on Wednesday, Additional Commissioner (Detective Branch) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mohammad Harunur Rashid at a press conference at the DB office in the capital said the Buet student died by suicide.
The DB chief said they scrutinized the footage of Fardin’s movement before his death.
Sheikh Farhad, a physician at Narayanganj General Hospital where the autopsy was done, said there were several injury marks on Fardin’s head and body.
DB arrests 6 impersonators
The Detective Branch (DB) of police have arrested six people, who impersonated DB and members of different law enforcement agencies to commit robbery, in the capital.
The arrestees— Sohag Majhi ,28, Delwar ,26, Zainal Hossain,28, Sohail ,27, Johnny ,32 and Aziz ,57--were apprehended from Dhaka's Savar and Jatrabari and Patuakhali on Friday night.
Harun-or-Rashid, additional commissioner of Detective Branch (DB) of DMP disclosed the matter in a press conference organised at DMP's media center at Minto Road in the capital on Saturday afternoon.
The law enforcers also recovered Tk 20 lakhs, a microbus and a motorcycle from their possession.
Earlier on Nov 13, an organized gang of robbers posing as Detective Branch officials made away with Tk 85 lakh at South Keraniganj on the outskirts of the capital in broad daylight, said the DB officer.

Later, a case was filed at South Keraniganj police station following a complaint lodged by victim Keramot Ali.
Following the case, a team of DB conducted a drive in Savar's Kaundia area first and arrested 4 people and later two more from Jatrabari and Patuakhali, added DB chief.
