SC stays bail of ex-Naraynganj mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in 5 cases
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday (12th November 2025) stayed the High Court’s order granting bail to former Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in five cases, including one over murder.
The chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Md Rezaul Haque passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the state.
Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik R Haque represented the state while Barrister Sara Hossain stood for Ivy.

The High Court on November 9, granted bail to Ivy in five separate cases including a murder case.
Later, a petition was filed challenging the HC order.
On July 20 last year, Minarul Islam, a garment worker, was shot dead during the July movement in Adamzi area of Narayanganj district.
Nazmul Haque, brother of Minarul, filed a case against 132 people, including Ivy, with Siddhirganj Police Station on September 23, 2024.
Police arrested Ivy from her Deubhog residence in Narayanganj on May 9, 2025 in connection with the murder of Minarul Islam.
Later, she was sent to jail.

NCC Polls: Ivy rewrites history with a hat-trick
Awami League mayoral candidate Selina Hayat Ivy on Sunday created history as she unofficially won the high-voltage Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) election for a record-breaking third time in a row.
Ivy, also the country’s first female city mayor, secured a landslide victory by defeating independent mayoral candidate Taimur Alam Khandaker with a margin of 69, 102 votes.
She bagged 1,61,273 votes while her nearest contestant Taimur Alam polled 92, 171.

Returning officer Mahfuza Akter announced the results when the vote counting completed.
With the latest victory, Ivy is the first city mayor to win the polls for the third consecutive term.
Out of the 7 mayoral candidates, Ivy contested the election with the "Boat" symbol while Taimur Alam with “Elephant” symbol.

Narayanganj city election on Jan 16
The election to Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) will be held on January 16 using electronic voting machines (EVMs) in all the polling stations.
The Election Commission (EC) announced the schedule for the local body polls on Tuesday.

The election schedule was finalized in an EC meeting held with Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda in the chair on Tuesday.
EC Secretary Md Humayun Kabir announced the schedule after the meeting.
According to the schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is December 15, while the date for scrutinizing nomination papers is December 20 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is December 27.
The balloting will held from 8am to 4pm without any break. It is the third election for the Narayanganj City Corporation after its formation in 2011.
More elections
Besides, the parliamentary by-polls to Tangail-7 constituency and five municipalities will also be held on January 16 next.

The five municipalities are Noakhali, Natore (postponed polls), Bagatipara of Natore, Jhikargachha of Jashore and Banshkhali of Chattogram.
The EVMs will also be used in the parliamentary by-election and the five local body polls.
The Tangail-7 constituency fell vacant with death of Awami League MP Akabbar Hossain on November 16 last.

Mayor Ivy seeks curfew or lockdown in NCC
Mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Dr Selina Hayat Ivy on Sunday urged the authorities concerned, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to either impose a curfew in the city corporation area or put it under lockdown as the IEDCR declared Narayanganj district as the red zone of coronavirus.
