Man lynched in Barishal over alleged rape attempt
A 32-year-old man was killed by a lynch-mob attack Dhan Gobeshona Road in Barishal city on Saturday for alleged rape attempt.
Sujon was severely beaten in the area in the evening died at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (Shebachim) Hospital around 8 pm while undergoing treatment, said OC Mizanur Rahman of Kotwali Model Police Station.
Earlier, a man filed a complaint at Kotwali Police Station against Sujon for attempting to rape his daughter.
According to the complaint, on Friday at 1:30 pm, the child was sent to Sujon's house, a neighbour, to return a cooking pot.
Sujon, who was alone at home, attempted to rape the child and when the child screamed he fled, it said.

Following the complaint, police conducted a primary investigation in the area on Saturday evening.
When locals came to know the matter they caught Sujon and beat him up mercilessly, leaving him critically injured.
He was taken to the hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries.
However, Sujon's family alleged that he was falsely accused and killed due to a long-standing enmity.
"If Sujon was guilty, he should have been punished through the legal system. Why was he killed without a trial?" asked Sujon's uncle Manik Mridha and demanded justice for those responsible.
SI Manik Saha of Kotwali Police Station said that Sujon's body is currently at the SBMCH morgue and will be handed over to his family after an autopsy.

The process of registering the child’s father's complaint as a formal case was underway, the OC said.
He added that legal action would be taken if a complaint is filed regarding Sujon's death by mob lynching.

Garment worker who jumped off moving bus to escape rape attempt dies
A 38-year-old garment worker who jumped off a moving bus to save herself from rape on Friday, died at Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Shamsunnahar, a worker of Bidisha Garment in Gazipur’s Sripur upazila and mother of two children.
Shamsunnahar, daughter of Abdur Razzak of Kishoreganj district, used to live with her children in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh.
Deputy Director of Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital, Dr Zakiul Islam said Shamsunnahar was undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital and died here in the afternoon.
Youth arrested in Madaripur over rape of 5th grader
Kamal Hossain, a physician of the neurosurgery department of the hospital said Shamsunnahar got a severe injury in her head and she was taken to the ICU of the hospital on Saturday. She might have died due to a brain hemorrhage.
MD Kamal, officer-in-charge of Bhaluka Model Police Station, said Shamsunnahar boarded the minibus from Mawna Bus stand in Sripur around 10 pm on Friday after finishing her work.
When the bus reached the Masterbari bus Stand in Bhaluka upazila, the other passengers of the bus got down. She was alone on the bus at that time.
At one stage, bus driver Rakib Mia took the steering of the bus from his helper. Later, he along with the bus supervisor tried to violate the woman.
To save herself Shamsunnahar jumped off the bus at Jamirdia Mayer Mosque area and got injured.

Later she was taken to Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex and then Shifted to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital in critical condition.
Police seized the bus and arrested the bus driver Rakib, his helper Arif Mia and Supervisor Ananda Das. An attempt to rape case was filed against them.

BCL leader expelled for rape attempt on college student in Sherpur
General secretary of Jhenaigati upazila unit Bangladesh Chhatra League Shahriar Khan Shaon was expelled over rape attempt.
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Central Executive Committee expelled Shaon for attempting to rape an indigenous college student, said a press release, signed by its president Saddam Hossain and general secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Imon, published on its website on Tuesday.
Besides, the committee also dissolved the Jhenaigati upazila unit Bangladesh Chhatra League due to its inactivity for a long period.

According to the release, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Central Executive Committee has expelled Shaon for breaching party discipline and involvement in criminal activities which tarnished its image.
On Saturday, Shaon swooped on the house of a Garo girl adjacent to Gazni Holiday Centre in Jhenaigati upazila and tried to violate.

Case filed against ward councillor in Natore over rape attempt
A case has been filed against a ward councillor as he allegedly tried to rape a woman in Natore's Naldanga municipality.
The accused is Abu Bakkar, councillor of Ward-1 of the municipality and president of the ward unit of Awami League.
On Sunday night, the woman’s husband, lodged a written complaint against Abu Bakkar at Naldanga Police Station.

Following the complaint, a case has been filed against the councillor under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, said Abul Kalam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Naldanga Police Station.
According to the case statement, on Sunday afternoon, councillor Abu Bakkar went to the house of the woman and tried to rape her in the absence of her husband.
Hearing her screams, when neighbours came, he fled the scene.
"Efforts are on to nab the accused councillor," added the OC.

UP chairman sued over rape attempt in Kurigram
A case has been filed against a Union Parishad chairman as he allegedly tried to rape a woman in Ulipur upazila of Kurigram.
The accused is Ataur Rahman alias Ata, 50, chairman of Thetrai UP of the upazila.
On Monday, the woman lodged a written complaint against Ataur with the Ulipur police.
Following the complaint, a case has been filed against the UP chairman under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act , said Imtiaz Kabir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ulipur Police Station.

According to the case statement, on June 9, Chairman Ataur Rahman asked the woman to meet with him with her voter ID card.
When she went to the chairman's house with the ID card at 9 am Ataur tried to rape her as there was no other person in the house at that time.
Hearing her screams when neighbours came he fled the spot. He also threatened the woman not to disclose the matter to anyone.
However, the accused UP chairman didn’t receive the call when contacted over phone on this matter.
“We will arrest the accused,” added the officer.

Rape attempt on woman on moving bus: Driver, helper held
Police in Chattogram have found out that a bus driver and his associates arrested in a case of mugging were also involved in an attempt to rape a garment worker on their moving vehicle.
The two identified as Md Gias Uddin Nayan, 21, and his associate Shimato Dutta, 22 have now been shown arrested in the attempted rape case filed by the woman.
The driver and his associate were arrested from the Chandgaon area on Thursday night in a case filed at the Bandar police station over mugging a passenger. The incident took place on the same bus before the attempted rape, said Kishore Majumder, sub-inspector (SI) of Bandar police station.

Mugging victim, Palash Kanti lodged a complaint at the police station the same day.
He alleged that three alleged muggers posing as passengers of the bus stabbed him and took away Tk 10,000 in cash and two mobile phones. Later, the bus took him to the City Gate area and forcibly took his PIN number and withdrew Tk 40,800 from her bKash account and then to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), Cinema Palace junction and Bahaddarhat and the money was withdrawn from his bkash account in three phases.
The bus dropped him off at the flyover in Lalkhan Bazar area around 3.30 pm. Then he lodged the complaint after receiving first aid, said the SI.
SI Kishore said, "After scrutinizing the CCTV footage of the area including Nimtala, we found that a rape attempt was made on a garment worker on the same bus earlier."
The 20-year-old garment worker got on the bus with 10-12 other workers to return home around 9pm on May 19. At Bahaddarhat area, when other workers got down, the bus started to move quickly with the lone female worker. At that time, the assistant was driving the bus and the driver tried to rape the girl.

Later, the woman jumped off of the moving bus to save herself and was seriously injured.
According to police, the victim was rescued unconscious from Bakalia and admitted to CMCH.
After being released from the hospital on May 25, the woman lodged a complaint at the city's Bakalia police station. Police later arrested bus driver Anwar Hossain Tipu and his associate Jony Das. The bus was also seized.

2 held over strangling a girl to death during rape attempt in Joypurhat
Two men were arrested over strangulating an Honours first-year student to death while attempting to rape her on Friday at her home in Panchbibi upazila in Joypurhat.
The arrestees were identified as Rony Mahanta, 29, son of Shankar Mahanta and Zahid Hasan alias Kamini Zahid, 33, son of Khorshed Mandal, said Masum Ahmed Bhuiyan, Superintendent of Joypurhat police in a press briefing on Sunday.
He said in primary interrogation the arrestees have accepted their involvement in the crime.

“The accused were neigbours of the girl and planned to rape her after her brother threatened them several times for teasing and giving indecent proposals to the victim,” said SP Masum Ahmed.
“They entered the girl's house after being sure her brother and sister-in-law were not home and tried to rape her around 2 am. As she protested and attacked them, they in a bid to stop her screams strangled her to death with her clothes,” said the SP.
On Saturday morning her relatives found her body on the bed and informed police.

'Rape attempt' on Pori Moni: Nasir, Omi get bail
A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted bail to former Uttara Club president Nasir U Mahmud and his associate Tuhin Siddiqui Omi in an attempted rape and murder case filed by actress Pori Moni.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Shahzadi Tahmida passed the order when police produced them before the court on completion of their five-day remand.

Earlier, on June 23, a Dhaka court placed Nasir and Omi on a five-day remand each in the case.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Rajib Hasan passed the order after investigation officer of the case Md Kamal Hossain produced them before the court with a plea of 10-day remand.
Dhallywood star Pori Moni on June 14 filed a sexual assault complaint against six people, including Nasir with Savar Model Police Station.

Later in the day, Nasir U Mahmud and four others were arrested from Uttara by a detective team.
Earlier, Pori Moni in her verified Facebook page, uploaded a status seeking justice from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, claiming that the six people attempted to rape and kill her.

Pori Moni buoyed by police work, calls it 'magic'
Popular Dhallywood actress Pori Moni has praised the police for what she called 'magic' in apprehending those she accused of attempted rape and murder.
“The role of the police in arresting the perpetrators was like magic. I never thought they would be arrested so soon,” said Pori, real name Shamsunnahar Smriti, in remarks to journalists outside the Detective Branch of police office Tuesday.
“Now I believe that I will get justice, and the accused will be punished through a fair trial,” she added, looking much more buoyed than the distressed, helpless woman who appeared before the media on Sunday, and before any arrests were made on Monday.

She visited the office of the Detective Branch and also thanked Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benzir Ahmed for promptly taking action in arresting the accused as soon as he learned about the incident.
“I knew he was the only place of hope. That's why I repeatedly wanted to reach out to him,” the starlet also said.
She seemed to backtrack somewhat from her initial grievance of the law enforcers not being cooperative, at least when she went to file a case at the Banani police station, right after the incident. Asked about going to Banani police station under the influence of alcohol, he said, "I was forced to drink alcohol."

In response to another question, Pori Moni said, "I did not say that the police did not cooperate, rather I said I did not get cooperation from many places without specifically mentioning the police.”
Speaking after her, Harun-or-Rashid, joint commissioner (North) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), literally lapped up the praise, saying: "The IGP contacted our superiors as soon as he found out. We have arrested the accused with lightning speed. As she has already said, the role of the police was like magic.”
“We will do our best to bring justice in this case,” he added.

On Monday, Pori Moni filed a sexual assault complaint against six people, including businessman Nasir U Mahmood, at Savar Model Police Station.
The previous day, on her verified Facebook page, she had posted a status seeking justice from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, claiming that someone or some people had attempted to rape and kill her at the Uttara Boating Club, in an incident four days earlier, that is June 9th.
The status went viral in no time, and it was followed by a dramatic midnight press conference from her residence that was widely broadcast.

Pori Moni case: Police press drug-related charges against Nasir, four others
Police on Tuesday pressed drug-possession charges against realtor Nasir U Mahmood and four others, a day after they were arrested over their alleged attempt to rape and murder actress Pori Moni.
An FIR was filed against the five under the Narcotics Control Act at the Airport police station in the small hours of Tuesday on a complaint by Manik Kumar, sub-inspector of DB Gulshan zonal team, said duty officer Mashiul Alam.
Drug-related charges have been brought against the five in the wake of the seizure of some 1,000 pieces of Yaba tablets from their possession at the time of their arrest.

The other accused in the case are Tuhin Siddique Omi, 33, Nazma Amin Brishti, 24, Lipi Akter, 18, and Sumi Akter, 19.
All of them will be produced in a court later in the day and police will seek their remand for custodial interrogation, sources told UNB.
On Monday, police arrested Nasir, the former president of Uttara Club Limited, from a flat in the Uttara area in the wake of a case filed over the alleged attempt to rape and kill actress Pori Moni. The case was filed on a complaint by the actress.

Apart from the drugs, police also seized foreign liquor and beer from the apartment.
Nasir’s Facebook profile shows he is currently the chairman of Kunj Developers, former president of Uttara Club, former district chairman of Lions Clubs International, a former footballer, and former elected general secretary of SM Hall of Dhaka University.
Besides, Dhaka Boat Club expelled Nasir from its executive committee on Monday, hours after his arrest.

The club took the unanimous decision at an EC meeting presided over by its President Dr Benazir Ahmed. It was attended by eight other EC committee members as well as club’s adviser Rubel Aziz.
The meeting also suspended the club membership of Nasir and three others, Tuhin Siddique Omi and Shah S Alam, said a statement from the club.
