IGP urges new police officers to uphold public trust through impartial role
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam on Thursday asked the newly appointed police officers to earn the public's trust by carrying out their duties impartially.
He emphasised that when the police earn the trust of the people, the public will be more inclined to cooperate in maintaining law and order.
The IGP made the comments during the concluding ceremony of the 43rd BCS (Police) batch Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Orientation Course at the Police Headquarters on Thursday.
"You are the future leadership of the police force. The dignity of the police department depends on you. Therefore, you must carry out your responsibilities with honesty and set an example for others to follow," said the police chief.

He further pointed out that recent movements against discrimination have provided the police with an opportunity to reconsider the expectations the public has of them. "As guardians of law and order, the police must be in tune with the emotions and sentiments of the people while carrying out their duties professionally," he added.
The IGP also highlighted the challenging nature of the policing profession, urging the new officers to acquire the necessary skills through training to face various challenges. He stressed the importance of gaining knowledge in constitutional rights, human rights, and new laws.
In addition, IGP Baharul Alam pointed out the significance of modern technology in policing. "In today's technological age, it is crucial to acquire skills and knowledge in advanced technologies to effectively control crime," he said.
The ceremony was also attended by Additional IGP (HRM) Abu Nasir Mohammad Khaled, DIG (HR) Kazi Zia Uddin, and other relevant officials.
A total of 84 officers from the 43rd BCS (Police) batch have joined as Assistant Superintendents of Police, including 78 men and six women.

DMP to introduce a new hotline for real-time information exchange: Commissioner
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Sajjat Ali on Tuesday said that the DMP is set to introduce a new hotline for real-time information exchange, aimed at providing timely updates and facilitating communication between the police and journalists, especially crime reporters.
The DMP Commissioner announced the initiative during a meeting with the newly elected executive committee of the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB) on Tuesday.
The DMP Commissioner said the initiative to launch the hotline in the media division of the DMP will be taken keeping in mind the idea of 'Instant information whenever there is an incident', an initiative is being taken to launch a hotline in the media department of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
IGP urges increased professionalism at Central Police Hospital
He said that the new hotline will enable journalists to receive instant information about incidents, and equally allow them to report details on ongoing situations.
In his speech, CRAB President Mirza Mehedi Tamal emphasized the long-standing cooperation between the police and the association, asserting that such collaboration would continue in the future.
He noted that delays in receiving timely information from the police could create gaps in the flow of information.
CRAB General Secretary M.M. Badshah recommended enhancing partnership between DMP and CRAB, and suggested organizing orientation and awareness programs.
He also urged the DMP Commissioner to foster cooperation under the concept of "real-time information exchange."
In response, DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) S.N. Md. Nazrul Islam was instructed to take necessary steps to ensure effective information flow.
Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sojjat Ali highlighted the importance of media cooperation in maintaining law and order and building a crime-free society.

He emphasized that controlling law and order is a difficult task for the police without the active support of journalists, and reiterated that the police and media are complementary to each other.
Meanwhile, when the Commissioner was asked about former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Uttara East Police Station Shah Alam, who had escaped from police custody after being arrested in Kushtia and brought to Uttara East Police Station in the capital, is still at large. Despite a nationwide red alert issued by the police, the fugitive remains unapprehended. In response, the DMP Commissioner clarified that the police had not released the former OC, stating, "If the police were to release him, it would have been in Kushtia itself, not after bringing him to Dhaka."
He also mentioned that two officers responsible for the incident had been dismissed due to negligence.
However, he acknowledged that the escaped OC has likely fled to India or a neighboring country.

IGP urges increased professionalism at Central Police Hospital
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam on Tuesday asked on-duty doctors to enhance the quality of services at the Rajarbagh Central Police Hospital by ensuring professionalism, sincerity, and dedication.
The IGP gave the instruction during a view exchange meeting with physicians, nurses, employees and staff of Police Central Hospital in the city after inspecting various departments of the hospital in Rajarbagh in the city on Tuesday.
In his speech, the IGP emphasized on modernizing the Central Police Hospital and directed the doctors and staff to maintain high standards of patient care.
He appreciated the ongoing healthcare services provided to police personnel and their families, and expressed his gratitude to the doctors and nurses for their tireless efforts.
IGP emphasizes maximum effort to combat crime in DMP’s monthly crime review meeting
During the meeting with hospital doctors, officers, and staff, it was told that, on average, around 4,500 police officers and their family members receive medical services at the Central Police Hospital daily. Furthermore, approximately 1,500 police officers receive pathology reports every day. Last year, a total of 712 surgeries were successfully conducted in the eye department, while 6,467 surgeries were performed across other departments.
The IGP also inspected the hospital's digital healthcare services, including registration, OPD, consultations, medicine stores, and report delivery.
He also visited various other departments such as the Emergency Unit, Radiology and Imaging, ICU, and Dialysis Unit. During the visit, he observed the service process for police members and their families and provided necessary guidance.
During the IGP's inspection, Central Police Hospital Director (DIG) Sardar Nurul Amin, Additional DIG (Administration and Finance) Dr. Md. Emdadul Haque and Superintendent of the hospital Dr. ABM Md. Khorshed Alam were present.

‘No magic to crime control; police working’, says IGP
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has said that the police are working and taking steps to curb crimes across the country as there is no ‘magic solution’ to it.
“SPs across the country have been directed to take necessary steps. We do not have any magical solution because you know the circumstances and from where we have to come back. But we are taking measures to address these challenges,” he said responding to queries from reporters at an event in the capital on Saturday.
Bangladesh Retired Police Officers’ Welfare Association organised the event at Rajarbagh Police Lines.
As the journalists asked about the rising incidents of theft, robbery and murder in Dhaka and elsewhere, the IGP said, “We are working to awaken the police force and regain their confidence. We want to get closer to people and seek their cooperation. We are also calling on representatives of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement to help us strengthen community engagement.”
Police must regain public trust through services: DMP commissioner
About promotions within the police force, the IGP said that promotions are being granted to officers with only 10–12 days of service remaining, as a way to honour and recognise their contributions.
Sought comments on his tenure, the IGP said, “I returned from retirement to assume this responsibility. I don’t know how much I will be able to achieve…but I will try to take the honor with me when I leave.”
On recent threats to student coordinators from different districts, the IGP said, “We have analysed and resolved every incident. The robbery in Kaliakoir and the mobile snatching in Narayanganj have been investigated.”
He said that the student coordinators were taken to Narayanganj, where they met the victim’s family and expressed satisfaction with the findings. These incidents are not cases of targeted killings, he said.
The IGP also mentioned two other incidents involving threats. In one, a 10th-grade student from Mymensingh was arrested and later released to his parents’ custody.
In another incident, a student named Meher from BRAC University received threats, which led to the arrest of Zahid Hasan in Sirajganj by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police. “We are working to resolve every incident, but not all of them are connected,” the IGP added.
When asked about the recent secretariat fire incident, the IGP parried the question, saying, “This will be worked out by the investigation committee. I cannot speak on this matter.”

Some officers violated law, failed to perform duties during July-August protests: IGP
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam acknowledged significant lapses in police conduct during the protests in July and August, saying that some officers violated the law and failed to perform their duties. The police have faced considerable challenges since August 5, he said today in a press briefing at the Police Headquarters.
“There is no doubt that during the July protests, some police officers were politically involved, and several officers were killed in those incidents. Despite these events, the police have often remained inactive, and there have even been cases of information being withheld from journalists,” the IGP said.
Baharul Alam assumes role as new IGP
"The present government is transparent. Unlike the previous government, there are no murders or abductions we need to conceal. We have nothing to hide now," he said.
The IGP said that improper appointments and frequent transfers have weakened the force's effectiveness. “Since the political transition in Bangladesh, we have failed to place the right people in the right roles. On December 4, we formed mentoring and monitoring committees for each division to address this. Capable investigators will be assigned to critical areas to ensure law and order,” he said, emphasizing his primary responsibility to restore the police's morale and public confidence.

Addressing the plight of officers affected by the protests, the IGP detailed the financial aid provided to the families of those killed and injured. “We have provided Tk 13 lakh to the families of each of the 44 officers who lost their lives and issued fixed deposits to others. Additionally, we remain in contact with the 2,500 injured officers and are covering their medical expenses,” he added.
The IGP also acknowledged that several senior police officials, including former Special Branch (SB) Chief Monirul Islam, Detective Branch (DB) Chief Harun ur Rashid, and DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman remain missing.
When asked when the police force would resume full operations on the ground, the IGP was unable to provide a definitive timeline but assured that a comprehensive restructuring was underway. “A complete overhaul will happen soon,” he promised.

Chhatra League is banned, has no right to do politics: IGP
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Moinul Islam said on Saturday that Chhatra League is now a banned organisation and it has no right to engage in political activities.
"Chhatra League does not have the right to hold rallies, and if they attempt to do so, strict legal action will be taken against them, similar to other banned organisations," he said.
The IGP made the remarks during the 6th anniversary rally of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, held at the auditorium of Rangpur District Police Lines School and College in the afternoon.
IGP Moinul Islam also said that all individuals involved in any form of unrest during the Anti-Discrimination Student movement will be held accountable under the law.
The IGP also talked about recent allegations against police personnel, confirming that some officers are under investigation.
He assured that anyone found guilty would face legal consequences, emphasising that no one would be above the law.
He also said that the police force could not perform its duties due to the actions of a few misguided leaders. The current government aims to reform the police to better serve the countrymen, the IGP added.
He urged both political leaders and police officers to avoid mixing administration with politics.
"Cops who wish to engage in politics should resign and politicians who seek to manipulate the police must refrain from doing so," he said, highlighting that genuine reform within the police force can only occur under these conditions.
The IGP also mentioned the huge misuse of illegal weapons over the past 16 years by certain groups, which have been used against students.
He expressed the commitment to recover the weapons and return those to the government.
During the event, he provided financial assistance to the families of those killed or injured during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
The event was presided over by Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Majid Ali, with senior officers from both district and the Metropolitan Police in attendance.
Earlier, IGP Moinul Islam visited the family of Abu Sayed, a student from Begum Rokeya University, the first martyr of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

No scope to avoid punishment after committing any crime: IGP
There is no scope to escape punishment after committing any crime in the country, said Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Mainul Islam on Saturday.
“Those who are involved in wrongdoings are few in numbers and if we all remain united, they will be insignificant. Yesterday’s incident proves this. We have arrested them and taken prompt action. So those who want to commit crimes have no chance to escape,” he said.
The IGP came up with the remark while talking to reporters after visiting Ramkrishna Moth and Temple in the morning.

He also assured that drives will be conducted against mugging, extortion, drugs, criminal activities and for traffic management after Durga Puja.
Police will work to prevent any deterioration of law and order, he added.
The IGP also urged the people to inform police regarding any sensitive issues including extortion and terrorist activities.

Police action taken in 35 isolated incidents centring Durga Puja, 17 arrested: IGP
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Mainul Islam stated that action has been taken in response to all unpleasant incidents centring the Hindu community's largest festival, Durga Puja, this year in the country.
Durga Puja is being celebrated at over 32,000 puja mandaps nationwide, and the police have responded to each isolated incident, he noted.
The IGP made these remarks to journalists after visiting the Banani Pujamandap in the capital on Friday night.
So far, 11 cases and 24 general diaries (GDs) have been filed concerning 35 untoward incidents, resulting in the arrest of 17 individuals.
Police on high alert to prevent rumors during Durga Puja Celebrations: IGP
The IGP stated that this year's Durga Puja posed significant challenges, with many expressing concerns about the celebrations. "We assured you of a peaceful Puja, and it is now being celebrated with great grandeur," he said.
He emphasized that the constitution upholds the right of individuals of all faiths to practice their religion. Aside from a few criminals, the people of Bangladesh are generally peaceful, and the police are committed to supporting law-abiding citizens while ensuring that those who engage in criminal behavior are held accountable.
Later, the IGP visited the Durga Puja Mandaps in Bashundhara and Uttara, where he exchanged greetings with worshippers.

Durga Puja: IGP assures three-tier security strategy across Bangladesh
Ahead of Durga Puja, security has been significantly ramped up across nearly 31,500 puja mandaps nationwide. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Mainul Islam today said that members of the Ansar and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will be on 24-hour duty at each mandap to ensure a safe and peaceful celebration.
During a press briefing at Dhakeshwari Temple today, the IGP emphasized that the Bangladesh Police, alongside other law enforcement agencies, are taking extensive measures to create a festive environment free of disruptions. “All puja mandaps will celebrate the festival in a peaceful and joyous atmosphere, with religious enthusiasm," he said, assuring that security has been prioritized at every level.

The IGP detailed a robust three-tier security plan: "We have increased patrols at every location ahead of the puja. Security measures have been heightened, and both Ansar and BGB personnel are stationed at key puja mandaps. Armed forces are positioned in every district to maintain order, while BGB personnel are active along the borders. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard and specialized police units are monitoring the coastal and naval regions."
He also warned against potential disruptions, particularly on social media, where increased cyber monitoring will be in place to prevent the spread of misinformation. "There is no room for disorder. We will take immediate action against anyone involved in subversive activities," he stressed.

To further enhance security, police control rooms have been set up in every district and upazila, allowing citizens to report incidents or concerns at any time during the festivities.

Tight security measures in place for Ijtema: IGP
Measures have been taken to organise the upcoming Biswa Ijtema peacefully and safely, said Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, inspector general of police (IGP).
The IGP said this while presiding over a meeting ahead of Biswa Ijtema at police headquarters in the city on Wednesday.
Biswa Ijtema to be held in two phases; Feb 2 and Feb 9 next year
The first phase of Biswa Ijtema will be held from February 2 to February 4 and the second phase from February 9 to February 11.
Uniformed and plainclothes police will be deployed for the security of devotees including foreigners arriving at the Biswa Ijtema ground,
The law enforcement forces will also ensure security through helicopters, watch towers, dog squads, bomb disposal units and CCTV cameras, he added.
Second phase of Biswa Ijtema ends today with ‘Akheri Munajat'
The government has taken all-out preparations to ensure the smooth holding of Biswa Ijtema in two phases.
At that time, the IGP expressed his satisfaction with the overall security management taken by the two groups for the Ijtema.
