7 ex-officials of Sonali Bank among 11 jailed for embezzling Tk 1.38 crore
A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced eleven people including seven officials of Sonali Bank including the former Managing Director of the bank, to different terms jail for embezzling Tk 1.38 crore.
Judge of the Dhaka Special Judge Court-6, Md Zakaria Hossain passed the order after hearing a petition.
Among the convicts, seven former Sonali Bank officials were sentenced to three years imprisonment while the others were sentenced to ten years jail term.

Seven of them were tried in absentia and the court also issued arrest warrant against them.
The seven Sonali Bank former officials were identified as former Managing Director of Sonali Bank, Humayun Kabir, Deputy Managing director Mainul Haque, General Manager Nani Gopal Nath and Mir Mahidur Rahman, Additional General Manager Saiful Hasan, Quamrul Hossain Khan and Deputy General Manager Safiz Uddin Ahmed.
The court also fined them Tk 10,000, in default, to six months more in rigorous imprisonment.
Those who got ten years of imprisonment were identified as Khan Zahan Ali Sweater’s Limited Chairman Tajul Islam, its managing director Abdul jalil Sheikh, director Rafiqul Islam and Mir Mohammad Shawkat Ali.
The court also fined Tk 1 lakh each, in default, to suffer six months more in rigorous imprisonment.
Besides, the court also sentenced them to three years imprisonment for fraudulence and fined Tk 1.14 crore.
Chairman of Khan Zahan Ali Sweater’s Limited Tajul Islam, in collusion with others, misappropriated Tk 1.38 crore from Sonali Bank Hotel Sheraton Branch from February 2012 to May 17, 2012 through forgery.
The then deputy director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) SMM Akhtar Hamid Bhuiya filed a case with Ramna Police Station on January 1, 2013.
The ACC investigating officer submitted a chargesheet against them on May 22, 2014.

Why 2 NSU trustees should not be granted bail: HC
The High Court (HC) on Tuesday issued a rule seeking explanation as to why two trustee board members of North South University (NSU) should not be granted bail in a case over embezzling money in the name of buying land for the univeristy.
The bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat issued the rule after turning down the bail pleas of two trustees-MA Kashem and Rehana Rahman.
Advocate Sayed Ahmed Raza and Advocate Shah Monjurul Hoque appeared for the bail petitioners.
Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan appeared for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) while Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state.
On 22 May, the HC ordered Shahbagh police to arrest four NSU trustees after rejecting their anticipatory bail pleas in the case.
The other accused trustees are- Benazir Ahmed and Muhammad Shahjahan.

On May 5, the ACC sued the chairman of the board of trustees of North South University (NSU) Azim Uddin Ahmed and five others for embezzling Tk 303.82 crore in the name of buying land for the campus.
Another accused is- Managing director of Ashalaya Housing and Developers Limited Amin Mobammad Hilali.
ACC's Deputy Director Farid Ahmed Patwar filed the case.
According to the Private University Act, 2010, the Board of Trustees is the highest governing body of a private university like North South University. According to the Memorandum of Association and Articles (Rules and Regulations) of the University, the University is a charitable, welfare oriented, non-commercial and non-profit educational institution, said the case statement.
The case states that over 9088 decimal land was bought in the name of campus development of NSU with the consent of some members of the Board of Trustees bypassing the approval of the University Syndicate, University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Education.
They later withdrew cash from the buyer through cash checks in their own names and kept FDR in their own names.
They unjustly benefited themselves by committing illegal activities through misuse of power and embezzling university and government funds, according to the case.
In carrying out such illegal activities, they have committed a punishable offense by resorting to fraud and forgery and exchanging commissions.

Corruption in NSU’s land acquisition: HC orders arrest of 4 trustees
The High Court on Sunday ordered Shahbagh police to arrest four trustee board members of North South University (NSU) in a case over embezzling money in the name of buying land for the campus.
The four trustees of the university who sought bail were MA Kashem, Benazir Ahmed, Rehana Rahman and Muhammad Shahjahan.

A HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order rejecting their anticipatory bail plea.
The court also ordered the police to produce them before the trial court within 24 hours.
Senior lawyers AF Hasan Ariff, Fida M Kamal, Ajmalul Hossain and Mizan Sayeed appeared for the accused, while Lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Attorney General AM Amin Uddin along with Additional Attorney General Sheikh Mohammad Morshed and Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state.

The High Court on Wednesday fixed Thursday for the hearing of the bail petitions of four trustee board members of North South University (NSU) in a case over embezzling money in the name of buying land for the campus.
The four members of the board of trustees of the university who sought bail were MA Kashem, Benazir Ahmed, Rehana Rahman and Muhammad Shahjahan.
