Mob beats man, hands over to cops for ‘raping’ step-granddaughter in Kushtia
An angry mob beat a man before handing him over to police for allegedly raping his 13-year-old step-granddaughter in the Nawdapara area of Bheramara upazila in Kushtia district on Tuesday morning.
The accused was identified as Shahabul Islam, 47, a resident of Joyrampur village in Daulatpur upazila.
He was the second husband of the victim’s grandmother. The couple had been living in a rented house in Bheramara since their marriage.
According to police and locals, the victim visited her grandmother’s house on Monday. Around 11:00am on Tuesday, when no one else was at home, Shahabul raped her.
The girl’s screams alerted neighbours, who rushed to the spot and caught the accused. Enraged locals then gave a good thrashing.
On information, police rushed to the scene, rescued him from the mob, and took him into custody.
Kushtia Additional Superintendent of Police (Bheramara Circle) Delwar Hossain said the arrested man admitted to his guilt during preliminary interrogation.
The victim has been sent to Kushtia General Hospital (250-bed) for medical examination.
On information, reserved women’s seat MP Farida Yasmin visited the victim’s family.

Bangladesh Bank to act against officials involved in ‘mob’ incident
Bangladesh Bank on Thursday announced that it will take administrative action against officials involved in Wednesday’s ‘mob’ incident at its headquarters, according to the bank’s Human Resources (HR) policy.
Arief Hossain Khan, Executive Director and Spokesperson of Bangladesh Bank, made the disclosure during briefing reporters held at the central bank on Thursday.
Responding to a query from journalists, the spokesperson said the newly appointed Governor has pledged to establish good governance within the institution. "Action will be taken against those involved in 'mob culture' in accordance with the existing HR policy," Khan said.
Earlier in the day, the new Governor officially assumed his duties and immediately held a high-level meeting with senior officials.
Later, the press briefing was organised to share the outcomes of the meeting.
During the meeting, the Governor urged officials to actively cooperate in initiatives aimed at reopening closed factories.
He emphasised that the central bank would provide the necessary policy support to make the economy more growth-oriented and focused on employment generation.
The spokesperson further noted that the Governor’s primary focus would be restoring discipline and ensuring a stable environment for the country's financial sector.

Youth beaten over ‘attempting to rape child’ in B’baria
A youth was beaten by some local people on Wednesday night over alleged attempt to rape a 7-year-old child at Bitgharin Nabinagar in Brahmanbaria district.
The injured man is Abdul Khaled, 25, son of Anish Mia of Bitghar village.
Nabinagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdur Razzak said that Abdul Khalek tried to rape the child on the roof of a primary school in Bitghar village on Tuesday afternoon.
‘Rapist’ snatched by mob from police custody in Khilkhet, beaten
Later, sensing the presence of local people he fled.
When the matter came to light on Wednesday, people caught Khaled and thrashed him.
On receiving the information, police went to the spot, rescued and admitted him to Brahmanbaria 250-bed General Hospital.
Legal action will be taken, said the OC.

Mob beats man to death suspecting him of being a thief
Local people beat a man to death suspecting him of being a thief at Sabujbagh in Dhaka on Thursday night.
Police said they rescued Hridoy, 27, in a critical condition as local people thrashed him as they suspected him to be a thief.
He was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where doctors announced him dead around 3:30 am on Friday.
Anwar Hossain, a sub-inspector of Sabujbagh Police Station, said the locals claimed that they beat the man as he was caught while stealing in the area.
