AL leader dies in Bogura jail
A local leader of Awami League, who was in Bogura jail, died while undergoing treatment at the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital under police custody on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Emdadul Haque Bhuttu, 51, vice-organising secretary of Dakkhinpara union unit of Awami League in Gabtoli upazila of the district.
The AL leader was sent to jail in a case filed for vandalism and explosive act on February 26, said jailer Syed Shah Sharif.
Emdadul fell sick after having sehri, the pre-dawn meal for Muslims during Ramadan, early Tuesday and was taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital.
Primarily, it is suspected that he died of a cardiac arrest.
So far, four leaders of Awami League have died in Bogura jail since August. They were Bogura district unit AL organising secretary Shahadat Alam Jhunu, Durgahata union unit AL former chairman Abdul Matin Mithu, Shibganj upazila unit AL treasurer Abdul Latif, and general secretary of no 15 ward of Bogura municipality Shahidul Islam Ratan.

Sheikh Helal, Tonmoy sued in Bagerhat, ex-SP held
A case has been filed against 35 Awami League leaders including former MPs of Bagerhat-1 and 2 constituencies Sheikh Helal Uddin and Sheikh Sarhan Naser Tonmoy over attack on students during July-August uprising.Md Rafiqul Islam Mithu, a businessman, filed the case against 35 identifiedpeople and 50-60 unnamed ones with Fakirhat Police Station on Saturday, said officer-in-charge of the Police Station SM Alamgir Kabir.Former superintendent of Bagerhat police Abul Hasnat Khan was arrested after he was shown arrested in the case.Advocate Mir Shawkat Ali Badsha, Bagerhat district unit AL president Sheikh Kamruzzaman Tuku, its general secretary Bhuiya Hemayet Uddin, Fakirhat Upazila unit AL President Swapan Kumar Das, Bagerhat municipality Mayor Khan Habibur Rahman, Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Parishad Chariman Sardar Nasir Uddin and Abul Kalam Azad were among the accused.

AL leader snatched from police custody in Pabna arrested
Police have arrested president of Sujanagar Upazila Awami League who was earlier snatched from their custody following an attack on a police vehicle in Pabna's Sujanagar upazila.
Abdul Wahab was arrested during a drive in Gajnar Beel area of Mathurapur in Vayna Union on Wednesday morning, police said.
Sujanagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Mostafa said Wahab was hiding in a house in Gajnar Beel.
Tipped off, police conducted a drive around 7 am and arrested two people including Wahab.
Case filed over snatching AL Leader from police custody in Pabna; 16 held
Earlier, 12 others were arrested in connection with the attack on the police vehicle, he added.
Wahab, a former chairman of Sujanagar Upazila Parishad and ex-mayor of Sujanagar Municipality, had been on the run in a case filed over an attack on students during last year's anti-discrimination student protests.
On February 2, police arrested him in front of Mathurapur High School in Sujanagar municipality.
Shortly after his arrest, Awami League activists attacked the police vehicle chanting “Joy Bangla” slogans, and snatched Wahab from their custody.

Local AL Leader's assault left Chhatra Dal leader’s brother dead in Sylhet, family says
A man was beaten to death by an Awami League leader and his associates in Tukerbazar area of Sylhet Sadar upazila on Tuesday night, the deceased’s family says.
The deceased was identified as Sheikh Uddin, 50, son of late Fazar Ali of Shahpur Dakshinpara in Tukerbazar. Sheikh Uddin was the elder brother of Zainul Ahmad Joy, convenor of Sylhet Sadar upazila Chhatra Dal.
According to Joy, the incident occurred on Friday after Jumma prayers.

He said, dispute over land had been ongoing with local Awami League activist Shah Mia. Sheikh Uddin approached Lilu Mia, convener of Ward 39 Awami League in Sylhet City Corporation, to seek a resolution. However, instead of addressing the complaint, Lilu Mia allegedly sided with Shah Mia and began assaulting Sheikh Uddin.
Later, Lilu and his group attacked Sheikh Uddin's residence, vandalizing property and physically assaulting him, Joy said.
Sheikh Uddin sustained severe injuries and was admitted to Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries after five days of treatment.
3 killed in road accidents in Chandpur and Jashore
Jalalabad Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Harunur Rashid said that Sheikh Uddin's brother filed an attempted murder case on December 23. It will now be considered a murder case, he said.
Police have already launched operations to apprehend the accused, said the OC.

Ward-level AL leader in Patuakhali arrested over attempted rape of child
A man has been arrested over attempted rape of a 10-year-old in Patuakhali.
The accused, Md. Delowar Talukdar, 55, is the ward member and organizing secretary of Awami League’s local unit of Ward 8 under Dabluganj union in Kalapara upazila.
The mother of the child filed a case against the accused at Mohipur police station.
According to police and the child’s family, Delowar, along with 10-15 people, went to Barkutia village on Saturday for Union Parishad election campaign.
The child’s mother was working in a nearby field when the incident occurred.

“He came to our home and, upon realizing my child was alone, molested her,” said the mother.
Abul Khair, officer-in-charge of Mohipur police station, said police arrested the accused and sent him to Kolagara court.

AL leader in Rowmari relieved from party post over assaulting headmaster
A leader of the Rowmari upazila unit of Awami League (AL) has been relieved from party post over assaulting a headmaster in the upazila under Kurigram district.
The accused is Rokonuzzaman Rokon, relief and social welfare secretary of the Rowmari upazila unit of Awami League.
General Secretary of Rowmari upazila Awami League Abu Huraira made the announcement at a press briefing on Saturday night.

On instruction of the general secretary of the district AL, Rokonuzzaman was relieved from all party responsibilities, including the post in the newly announced committee of the upazila unit of Awami League, for “beating the teacher and breaching party discipline”, he said.
A case was also filed against two named, including Rokonuzzaman, and 10-12 unidentified people on Saturday evening, said Rup Kumar Sarkar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rowmari Police Station.
The other accused is Rokonuzzaman’s associate Asadul Islam.
On January 19, the victim, Nurunnabi Haque, headmaster of Phulkarchar Junior Secondary School, lodged a written complaint against them at Rowmari Police station.
Nurunnabi said that he had a dispute with Rokonuzzaman and Asadul over the recruitment of school teachers.

Rokonuzzaman and his men picked him up from Rowmari Upazila Parishad premises and took him to the a bus counter where he was given death threats earlier in the afternoon.
Later, the headmaster was taken to the office room of Abu Huraira, general secretary of Upazila Awami League and headmaster of Rowmari CG Zaman High School on a motorcycle, where he was beaten. He wasater admitted to the Rowmari Upazila Health Complex.

AL leader found dead in Cox's Bazar
A local Awami League leader was found dead in his own home in Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Jahangir Alam Bulbul. He was the former Vice Chairman of Chakaria Upazila and Senior Organizational Vice President of Matamuhuri Upazila Awami League.
Bulbul used to live with his wife and two daughters at their house in Chattogram's Bhoramuhuri. However, his wife and daughters are abroad now.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chakaria Police Station Chandan Kumar Chakraborty said that Bulbul had not been seen for a few days. Finding it suspicious, he went to his house and found the door locked from the inside. Later, the police broke the door and found his body lying in his bathroom, added the OC.
No legal action was taken as the family did not file any complaint, said the OC, adding that the body has been handed over to his relatives.

PM mourns Sharsha AL leader Nuruzzaman's death
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Sunday expressed shock and deep grief at the death of Jashore Sharsha Upazila Awami League (AL) General Secretary Md Nuruzzaman.
Nuruzzaman, 62, breathed his last today at his Dhaka residence at 5am after a prolonged illness.
The AL lost a dedicated leader with the death of Nuruzzaman, Sheikh Hasina said.
She prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and extended her heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.

AL unit leader murdered in Dhaka
A unit leader of the ruling Awami League (AL) was stabbed to death in Jatrabari area of the capital on Tuesday night.
According to police, Abu Bakkar Siddque Habu, 35, was president of unit No 14 within ward No 50 of the Dhaka metropolitan AL. He was the son of the late Ali Ahmad Hawlader of Nanda village in Shariatpur district.
Sajjad Hossain, organizing secretary of the unit, said there had been a dispute between Habu and some local youths over power connection on the footpath.
“A group of youths numbering four to five stabbed him with sharp weapons in Shaheed Faruk Saroni area in the evening and left him critically injured,” he said.

Habu was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries around 9pm, said Sajjad quoting Md Bachhu Miah, in-charge (inspector) of the DMCH police outpost.
The body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy, said Bachhu Miah.
Habu, father of three sons and vendor of vegetables by profession, used to live his family in Tanpara area of the Jatrabari, added he.

Gaibandha AL leader allegedly threatens freedom fighter
An aged freedom fighter in Palashbari of Gaibandha has faced threats of losing his allowance unless he testifies a known Jamaat patron as a freedom fighter.
The allegation was made against Muhibul Hasan Mukit, who recently joined as organising secretary of newly formed Gaibandha's Palashbari unit of Awami League. His parents were known sympathizers of local Jamaat for a long time, said sources at the local Awami League.

Even a senior freedom fighter named Nasir Uddin Sarkar in Gobindaganj received threats of taking away his freedom fighter certificate if he does not certify that Mukit's father took pary n the Liberation War.
"They blackmailed me. Habibur Rahman was never a freedom fighter. I know that very well. They cheated me, forcing me to say something in their favour," he said.

Meanwhile, the convener of a probe body in this matter prepared his report while none of the 28 interviewees from local AL leaders and freedom fighters testified against the allegation over the long standing nexus between Mukit’s father and local Jamaat leaders.
The committee was made following the submission of a complaint regarding the involvement of Mukit's family in Jamaat to central Awami League by a local leader.
