For 12-year-old Rozina Akhter, life was once centred on school, family and dreams of a brighter future.

A sixth-grade student at a school in Kolkata, India, Rozina had been living with her parents and five siblings in West Bengal. Today, however, she finds herself stranded along the Bangladesh-India border, uncertain about what lies ahead.

Rozina is among 11 people — including women, men and children — who were allegedly pushed towards the Bangladesh border by India's Border Security Force (BSF) at the Mashalgaon border in Haripur upazila of Thakurgaon early Friday.

Nearly 48 hours later, no solution has been reached despite two rounds of flag meetings between border authorities.

As a result, the group has been forced to spend three days in difficult conditions near the border. They have been struggling with limited food and drinking water under scorching sun and rain.

Local residents of the Mashalgaon border area have provided some dry food on humanitarian grounds, but it remains insufficient for the stranded families.

Among them is Rozina's mother, who is nine months pregnant, and her younger brother, who has a disability. Overwhelmed by uncertainty, Rozina says she only wants to return home and resume her studies.

According to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) sources, the BSF attempted to push the group into Bangladesh through an area near border pillar 349/7-S under the Mashalgaon Border Outpost (BOP) at around 3:30am on June 5.

After receiving information, a BGB patrol team rushed to the area, identified the group and prevented them from entering Bangladesh. The group consists of three men, four women and four children.

They are currently staying about 50 yards inside the Indian side of the zero line.

During preliminary questioning, the men said they had been living in the Dum Dum area of West Bengal.

They alleged that Indian law enforcement agencies detained them on May 26 and kept them at a designated location where hundreds of others were also staying. Later, they were reportedly divided into groups and taken to different points along the border.

Later, they were transported to the Bohargaon camp of the 87 BSF Battalion, where they stayed for a day before being taken to the border area on the night of June 6.

Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Al Moin Hasan, commanding officer of the Dinajpur 42 BGB Battalion, said the border force has heightened surveillance and strengthened patrols in the area.

He said discussions between the BGB and BSF at the company commander level are continuing to resolve the issue.

"The BGB remains alert to prevent any form of illegal infiltration and push-ins along the border. We are trying to find a quick solution through bilateral flag meetings," he said.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday said all important border-related issues including push-ins across the frontier will be discussed at the four-day director general-level meeting between the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India's Border Security Force (BSF).

“The DG-level meeting is held alternately in Bangladesh and India. This time it is our turn to visit India. All relevant issues will be discussed there,” he told reporters at the Secretariat.
