At least 25 Anti-Modi protesters from different left-leaning student bodies and two photojournalists were injured as some Chhatra League men carried out an attack on a demonstration protesting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's bilateral visit to Bangladesh ahead of Independence Day on March 26.

The attack left at least 25 leaders and activists of progressive student wings including Pragati Barman Tana, Meghmallar Bose, Asmaney Asha, Sumaiya Setu as well as two photojournalists including Jibon Ahmed of Daily Manab Zamin and Rubel Rasid of Daily Desh Rupantor.

The injured students were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for proper treatment.

The attack was carried out on Tuesday evening near TSC area of Dhaka University campus by BCL men.

As part of their demonstration, the progressive student alliance brought out a procession and headed to Shahbagh intersection. When they reached TSC area, hundreds of BCL activists, who have occupied the Raju sculpture from Tuesday morning, executed the deadly attack.

Chhatra Front Dhaka University president Salman Siddique said, “Chhatra League attacked our peaceful procession. At least 20-25 of our brothers have been injured and 15 of them are admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.”

In another development on Tuesday morning, several activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) snatched another effigy of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that was scheduled to be burned by Bangladesh Students Federation (BSF) at Raju memorial sculpture of DU campus.

Later, BSF activists burnt several photos of Narendra Modi terming him as 'fascist ruler' and protesting his bilateral visit to Bangladesh.

Hundreds of leaders and activists of BCL took to the Raju sculpture and Madhur Canteen of the university from yesterday morning celebrating Gandhi Peace Prize for 2020 that was conferred on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
