"We've instructed and requested our leaders and workers to stand by the flood-hit people of the entire country. At the same time, we urge the government to take immediate steps to help the flood-affected people, discarding their indifference,” he said.

Fakhrul made the call while talking to reporters after paying homage to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman together with party senior leaders by placing a wreath on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azah.
He said the government needs to provide the flood victims with sufficient relief alongside rehabilitating them.

Referring to the experts' warning that this year’s floods may last for a long time, the BNP leader said the government should work out a long-term plan to death with the natural disaster. “The government never takes a long-term plan in advance and gives importance to the opinions of others.”

Replying to a question, he said the government still could not ensure sufficient relief materials to assuage the sufferings of the flood-affected people amid coronavirus pandemic.

Khaleda sick

Fakhrul said their party chairperson Khaleda Zia is very sick as she is not getting any scope for receiving treatment for her physical complications. “Neither she can go to hospitals, nor the doctors can visit her due to the prevailing condition of the country. Even, there’s no scope for her to go abroad for treatment. That’s why she still could not receive the advance treatment.”

He said they are waiting for a favourable situation for ensuring advance treatment of Khaleda.

Fakhrul together with BNP standing committee members offered fateha at the grave of Zia and placed wreaths  there around 11am, marking the Eid.

He, one behalf of Khaleda, greeted the country’s people on the occasion of Eid.

On March 25 last, Khaleda was released from jail for six months upon an execute order considering her age and humanitarian ground.

The government passed the executive order for her release on two conditions -- receiving treatment staying at her Gulshan residence and not leaving the country. She has been staying at her Gulshan residence since she was freed.

Khaleda was sent to Old Dhaka Central Jail after she had been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by a special court in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8, 2018.
