Global Covid cases near 511 million
The overall number of Covid cases is fast approaching 511 million amid a rise in new infections in parts of the world.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 510,784,182 while the death toll from the virus reached 6,224,790 Wednesday morning.
The US has recorded 81,100,497 cases so far and 991,938 people have died from the virus in the country, the university data shows.
India's Covid-19 tally rose to 43,062,569 on Tuesday with 2,483 new cases registered in 24 hours in the South Asian country, as per the federal health ministry's latest data.
This is the seventh consecutive day when the number of daily new cases has surpassed the 2,000-mark, after lower tallies were reported in recent weeks.

Besides, 1,399 deaths due to the pandemic recorded since Monday morning took the death toll to 523,622.
Covid Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh logged 19 fresh Covid-19 cases in 24 hours till Tuesday morning, taking the total caseload to 19,52,602.
As per the latest government data, the country’s total fatalities remained unchanged at 29,127 as no deaths were reported during the period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The daily positivity rate dropped to 0.38 per cent from Monday's 0.43 per cent after testing 5,020 samples during the period.
On Monday, the number of infections was higher as 27 new cases were reported with zero death. Besides, the mortality rate remained unchanged at 1.49 per cent.
The recovery rate rose to 97.01 per cent with the recovery of 364 more patients during the 24-hour period.
In March, the country reported 85 Covid-linked deaths and 8,000 new cases while 66,639 patients recovered from the disease, according to DGHS.
Among the 85 deaths during the period, 44 were unvaccinated patients, 11 were vaccinated with the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine, 28 with the second dose and two with the third dose.
The country reported its first zero Covid-related death in a single day on November 20 last year, along with 178 infections, since the pandemic broke out in Bangladesh in March 2020.

On January 28, Bangladesh logged its previous highest daily positivity rate at 33.37 per cent reporting 15,440 cases and 20 deaths.
Besides, the country registered the highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 last year, while the highest number of daily fatalities was 264 on August 10 last year.

Bangladesh logged 27 more Covid-linked deaths with 5,268 fresh cases in 24 hours till Friday morning.

Friday was the second consecutive day when over 300,000 daily cases were registered in more than eight months.

Bangladesh reported 11,434 fresh cases with 12 deaths in 24 hours till Friday morning, with the infection rate marking a sharp rise.
The positivity rate increased to 28.49 % from Thursday’s 26.37% after testing 40,423 samples, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Bangladesh last logged 11,164 cases and 264 deaths on August 10 last year, with a positivity rate of 23.54% in 24 hours.
The fresh numbers took the country’s total fatalities to 28,192 while the caseload mounted to 1,664,616 on Friday.
Meanwhile, the mortality rate further declined to 1.69%.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s total tally of Omicron cases reached 64 with the detection of nine more cases till Thursday, according to GISAID, a global initiative on sharing all influenza data.

New Restrictions
All schools, colleges and universities in the country will remain closed from January 21 to February 6 in an effort to curb the spread of Covid-19 pandemic, the government announced on Friday.
The Cabinet Division issued a notification in this regard, imposing restrictions on the overall activities and movement of people in the country amid a worrying spike in Covid cases.
The notification asked all to wear masks and maintain health rules at public places like markets, shopping malls, mosques, bus stands, launch terminals, railway stations. Local authorities have been instructed to monitor and ensure compliance.

Global Covid cases surge past 302 million
Amid the global scare over the rising Omicron cases, the overall number of coronavirus cases has now surged past 302 million.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 302,679,314 while the death toll from the virus reached 5,478,980 Saturday morning.
The US has recorded 59,166,756 cases so far and more than 836,477 people have died from the virus in the country, the university data shows.
Hospitalisations of US children under five with Covid-19 soared in recent weeks to their highest level since the pandemic began, according to government data released Friday on the only age group not yet eligible for the vaccine, reports AP.
The worrisome trend in children too young to be vaccinated underscores the need for older kids and adults to get their shots to help protect those around them, said Dr Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Since mid-December, with the highly contagious Omicron variant spreading furiously around the country, the hospitalisation rate in these youngest kids has surged to more than four in 100,000 children, up from 2.5 per 100,000.

Brazil, which has been experiencing a new wave of cases since January last year, registered 22,328,252 cases as of Friday, while its Covid death toll rose to 619,654.
India's Covid-19 tally rose to 35,226,386 on Friday, as 117,100 new cases were registered in 24 hours across the country, as per the health ministry's latest data.
Besides, 302 more deaths were recorded since Thursday morning, taking the death toll to 483,178.
Situation in Bangladesh
Amid a new surge in the virus, Bangladesh reported another Covid-linked death and 1,146 fresh cases in 24 hours till Friday morning, said the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
With the detection of fresh cases after testing 20,890 samples, the daily case positivity rose to 5.67 percent from Thursday’s 4.86 percent during the period, according to the directorate.

Global Covid cases near 268 million
The overall number of global Covid cases is fast approaching 268 million amid the Omicron-driven surge.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 267,794,444 while the death toll from the virus reached 5,278,886 Thursday morning.
The US has recorded 49,537,175 cases to date and more than 793,188 people have died so far from the virus in the country, as per the university data.
New cases in the US climbed from an average of nearly 95,000 a day on November 22 to almost 119,000 a day this week, and hospitalisations are up 25% from a month ago. The increases are due almost entirely to the delta variant, though the Omicron mutation has been detected in about 20 states and is sure to spread even more, reports AP.
